Changes in 2004 DVDs
Time
at first I wasn't so fussed by replacing the emperor with Ian Mcdiarmind in Empire, but as for seeing the awful screen capture, and hearing the dialogue, I really expected them to do a much better job of it, what was wrong with showing the emperor shrouded in his hood like they did with Sidious in the prequals? He looks far more menacing and mysterious when you can't see his face, and even though we all know fully well what he looks like, they still should have left his final reveal to ROTJ,
There was a fake mock up shot floating around here recently that looked a lot more realistic, and why is the dialogue sooooooo bleedin' obvious, talk about dumbing it down for the kids, and it sounds so badly inserted into the scene, I don't understand why they didn't just replicate the original scene exactly using Ian Mcdiarmind.

surely when they cast Hayden in the first place it was intended that he had to look believable as a younger version of Sebastian Shaw, the same way as Ewen was cast as a young Alec Guiness, they obviously didn't beleive continuity was that important when casting Hayden as a replacement for Jake lloyd ten years down the track, as he bears little or no physical resemblance to Jake lloyd?

I thought that there was meant to be some sort of equity guidelines regarding replacing an original actors performance after the act.
just as well Sebastian Shaw is dead, because they've just cut him out of the biggest role of his career, he'd be rolling in his grave (funeral pyre) It just shows the contempt that George Lucas has for his actors.

MagnoliaFan Edition Episode III-VI Titles
Time
I'm yet to see your re-edits of the first two films (they are in the mail, thanks to Rikter!) and i'm hanging out to see them as I've heard a lot of good reports about them, but I was bit shocked to read that you're contemplating doing re-edits of the original trilogy , as the general concensus seems to be that these should remain untampered with . Although I'm more than a little curious as to what could possibly be added to (or removed from) the original trilogy, but I guess Return of the Jedi could do with some stategic editing.

but as for changing the titles, is it really necessary?, I must admit that I never really liked the rebranding of StarWars to 'A New Hope' it always seemed a bit wish-washy, but given it's position in the overall film cycle, it does seem to be the most appropriate title, and as for 'Revenge of the Jedi' it doesn't really fit into what happens within the movies themes of Vader returning from the darkside, although Redemption of the Jedi is probably a bit of a mouthfull.

Episode III Storyline
Time
I read the synopsis, and it sounded pretty good for the most part, although there were a few points that seemed unlikely, firstly
I doubt George Lucas would even briefly or off camera , depict Anakin slaying the Jedi children,
-Padme stowing away on Obi-wans ship (wouln't he sense her presence?)
-and I can't imagine Owen Lars getting too worked up over the loss of a step-brother he met only once briefly, I always sensed that he knew the whole story about what really became of Anakin.

Star Wars Episode III (spoilers) - a general discussion thread
Time
I'm not sure if anyone else noticed this, but in the photo of Anakin kissing Padme, she looks pretty noticably pregnant, so it would appear Anakin was aware of the fact before he turned to the darkside.

also I really like the look of the new jedi star-fighter even if it does look like it was cobbled together from bits and pieces of the original trilogy's ships, Tie-advanced wings, b-wing cockpit, and the Falcon's mandibles at the front, it goes along way towards bridging the gap between the two trilogies in terms of fighter design.

Cringe Factor
Time
Han & Leia's romance was so much more convincing than anything in the prequals, without slowing down the pace of the film and appearing so contrived, we didn't need to see them on vacation having picnics in the countryside and cosy chats by the fireplace with the worst dialogue ever , if George wanted us seriously to believe in them as couple he should have introduced them both at a similar age and thrown them into some thrilling situations that would draw them together.

Should Star Wars Purists Shut Up?
Time
Thanks Bossk
I stand corrected, after dusting off my old VHS copies, both the THX and special edition (as I mentioned it has been a year or two since I last sat down and watched them in full) there was no mention of Jabba hunting down Jedi, maybe I'm losing my mind but I seem to remember Jabba saying it to Luke right after the "your jedi mind tricks will not work on me " line, I wonder if perhaps I'm getting it mixed up with one of the book adaptions or perhaps the Radio adaption, well at least that'll keep me busy for the next couple of hours.but I'm sure i've heard mention of Jabba "hunting down your kind before you were born"

If anyone can confirm this It would be helpful, and would mean I'm not losing the plot.

do we really need to see Boba survive the Sarlaac? can't this just be left to the EU novels, it's bad enough we had to endure the beginnings of Boba as a young New Zealand child shouting 'Git im Ded!' I think we need to see the demise of him on film, it's a pity they couldn't have given Audrey 2 (the sarlaac) a set of razor sharp teeth to make sure Boba met his grizzly end.

As for dubbing TESB Boba's dialogue with Temeura Morrison, is it really neccesary?, if that's the case I assume that the original trilogy's storm-troopers aren't descended from the clones otherwise, they'll NEED to be dubbed too! ( besides if they were clones of jango fett wouldn't all the uniformed imperial officers also bear the same resemblance?)

and as for replacing Sebastian Shaw with Hayden in the spirit scene, they'll have to also add him into the Vader unmasking scene, otherwise young Luke's gonna be scratching his head wondering who the fuck is this young guy standing with Obi-wan and Yoda?. the way things are going it's a surprise they are not digitally replacing Sir Alec Guiness with an aged Ewan McGregor.

Who know's maybe in ten years time George'll make special editions of the prequels so that they match the Original Trilogy more closely, and then I won't really care who shoots Jar-Jar first!

Lucas Even Screws Up Jabba's Character
Time
I always thought that the biggest problem with the prequals was that there was too much story and convoluted threads of backstory, and not enough emphasis on the characters to keep it interesting, TRADE BLOCKADES, POLITICAL NEGOTIATIONS AND WRANGLINGS, MIDICHLORIANS, SEPERATISTS all add up to a case of too much information, it wasn't until the last haf hour of AOTC that the prequal trilogy finally kicks into gear, everything up until that point just seems like a prolonged lead-up.

I think somewhere along the line George got so wrapped up in the whole backstory of the star wars universe that he forgot the basics of good movie-making/story-telling, and that is to "Keep it Simple, Stupid!' , look at the original trilogy, it's a very simple story of good vs evil, with a small band of really interesting characters put through a series of challenging and interesting situations and most of all it was FUN!!!

After all the interviews with GL in the 80's and 90's where he talks about being inspired by Joseph Campbell's Power of the Myth and 'The hero's Journey' It seems that once he got around to writing the prequals, he was more heavily influenced by CNN and Parliament question-time.

Politicians don't make good Action Heroes and vice versa,

Should Star Wars Purists Shut Up?
Time
I enjoyed reading your comparison of Jabba to Al Capone, and it made perfect sense up to a point, now forgive me if i'm wrong it has been a little while since I last watched Return of the Jedi, but doesn't Jabba say something to Luke along the lines of 'I've been hunting Jedi since before you were born!' now whether Jabba was boasting and bragging we'll never know unless he actually appears in Episode 3 hunting down Jedi as part of the Jedi purge. But it would make sense that he was more than just an up and coming thug at the time of A New Hope.

and from my limited knowledge of the EU, aren't the Hutt Clans meant to be quite established leaders in organised crime, it's quite likely that he was handed down the position, rather than worked his way up through the ranks.

I think it's pretty obvious in A New Hope, that Han Solo is almost too cocky for his own good (it's his personality) which is why he sass's Jabba and thinks he can get away with it.

Again this is just another point of view.

The Phantom Menace

"Star Wars fans fortunate enough to have seen Episode II in a digital theater will be happy to know that the D-cinema version of the movie -- which differed from the standard film print version -- formed the basis of the DVD master. "The digital version of the film is on this DVD, but there are also some additional, minor changes. You're going to have to figure those out for yourself," says Ward. "

this is the last paragraph of the article you mentioned, didn't want to shoot you down, but the second last sentence unfortunateley proves you wrong.

Info: OT Bootleg DVDs
Time
I recently came across this forum after trying to find copies of the original trilogy, after reading all the posts and different reviews of all the bootleg versions, I must say I'm more confused than ever. I considered purchasing from the endorforest web site, but it seems there are a lot of mixed opinions about that set, and i'm not sure if they are the same set that Prillaman reviewed on his site a week ago, as the artwork seemed a little different to what's advertised on their site, and judging by the discussion relating to other people's versions of the discs it seems that the standard for both picture and sound is pretty high on most sets

to put it in a nutshell I guess what i'm looking for is

: the most complete versions of the films (i.e preferably with leia welding scene from TESB and that 3-PO tractor beam line from ANH)
: preferably an interactive menu would be nice
: bonus features (either on a seperate disc or with the film as long as it doesn't sacrifice too much quality)
: The original classic 'making of...'specials would be a dream come true
: cover artwork (although not essential)
: and lastly someone who can ship to Australia for a decent price

hopefully someone can point me in the right direction

the only change I ever wanted to see in any special addition, would be to improve the look of the Rancor Scene in ROTJ, the shot where Luke is crouched under a rock and the rancor's hand comes into shot to pick him up, i've always felt it was one of the sloppiest piece of blue-screen effects in the whole trilogy, and could never understand why it wasn't the first thing they fixed up in the original special editions (surely it was more important than the Muppet Musical production of 'Jedi Rocks) surely it wouldn't be too hard to either colour correct the scene, or recreate the rancors hand in cgi so that it blended into the scene better, Even better still if they could recreate the cut scene of luke falling onto the monster's eye from the grate.

and i wish they had of redone the shot of the trash compactor monster's eye popping out of the water, the way the shot was lit differently makes it look like an old piece of 'stock footage' ripped from a 'B' monster movie, it always looked like it had been addded as an after-thought.

hope this doesn't sound like I'm in favour of the special editions, I just wish George had tweaked some of the existing effects that needed work, without adding all the cheap visual gags that were designed to show off ILM's skills, rather than advance the story any further.

Bring back Lapti nek and the Ewok Nub yub song!!!
