Yes, Acbagel’s Legacy of the Force does exactly what you describe and it has a workprint available. https://originaltrilogy.com/topic/The-Rise-of-Skywalker-Legacy-of-the-Force-A-Star-Wars-Legends-Re-edit-Workprint-Released/id/83466

Oh, nice! I actually have that one but I haven’t got around to checking it out. I’ll definitely have to now!

Watching some video essays about the fundamental failure in filmmaking that is TROS, I wanted to ask: Have any fan edits made any leeway in having Rey stay permanently dead and having Ben survive so he can be a Cain-like figure who has to atone for his many sins he’s committed during his life? Maybe even having him be the one to travel to Tatooine to bury both Luke and Leia’s lightsaber instead of Rey?

I had also thought to suggest showing the TFA duel in the vision, reframing it to imply she unknowingly used the dark side to defeat Kylo. I do think using the Sith eyes would be a bit too on the nose, unless this was a follow-up to Starlight. I think it’d work to just show Rey striking Kylo down paired with Luke’s “You went straight to the dark”, then followed by a shot of Rey falling down the dark side hole and/or inside the cave.

Other ideas:

Use Finn’s “Noooo!” from Chewie’s ‘death’ to begin the vision, similarly to the way baby Rey’s worked originally, or Finn yelling “Rey!”, though that’s become a bit of a meme.

Incorporate Obi-Wan’s line “you will be tempted by the dark side of the Force” which could be faintly heard in Rey’s TFA vision (maybe keep it equally faint and echoey).

Use Kylo’s line “You’re still holding on! Let go!” as we see the lightning blast from Rey’s hand (it’d probably be better to leave “join me” instead, to keep the parallel to Kylo’s vision and set up all the talk about holding hands, but maybe both could fit?).

I really like all of this, especially the idea of re-using the TFA duel.

The Force Awakens: Starlight (V1.1 Released!)
Time

So, seeing as this is the premiere TFA edit thread pretty much, I thought I might as well ask this question here.

With each movie in the ST, I know that there’s been a pretty extensive Behind The Scenes documentary for each one on the Blu-Ray that has some alternate takes or cut scenes being filmed or what not. I know with TROS, some footage from that was used to great effect in Hal’s Ascendant edit (mostly just because of the lack of actual deleted scenes). I wonder if there are any scenes from TFA’s documentary that could be used as well alongside with the deleted scenes?

Thanks, and I agree. This is probably the single most important part of this edit for the greater story and trilogy.

BTW, I just updated the link above. I realized that there was an establishing shot of the Starkiller prisons that I had cut from the first version which would help the flow of this scene.

I’m not sure what to put for that final line.

“And General, if the advance team is destroyed…nobody at all could save us.”

Or

“And General, unless that shield is destroyed…nobody can save us.”

“And General, until that shield is destroyed…not even the Force can help us.”

I like the second line.

Later in the film after Hosnian Prime is destroyed, we could have a montage of establishing shots of notable planets where we see one or multiple Destroyers arriving at each world. You wouldn’t have to necessarily depict any battles, but this could visualize the idea that the First Order basically blitzkriegs major systems as it simultaneously destroys the Senate. If it disrupted the flow of TFA’s climax, this montage could potentially be included at the beginning of TLJ instead.

I dig this idea. Also, knowing how a lot of TROS fan edits have cut out the Kijimi destruction footage, editors could now use some of that footage to show how FO Star Destroyers are blitzkrieging worlds.

The Final Order - A no Leia/Rey Nobody TROS edit by Spence (Completed)

Personally speaking, I find that having Leia die on screen in the first five minutes (and accidentally implying it could be from a heart attack) to be kind of icky. At least with the theatrical version (and more so with Ascendant), Leia dies in a pretty Star Wars-ian way and this is already after the Frankenstein’d version of her character had been appearing throughout the movie.

I honestly think the best course of action to go with in not having Leia in this movie (and one I was pretty sure they were going to do before they announced they would be using prior footage) is to just have Leia die in between films. Mention it in the crawl, establish she had been training Rey, and say that it might be from what happened to her in TLJ if you want. I mean, it’s kind of shitty, but obviously the reality of what actually happened with Carrie and how the filmmakers had to scramble to figure out how to put her in the last film is shitty. 😕

I’ve actually had this same sort of idea for creating a new Episode II out of Clone Wars episodes (both Filoni’s and Tartakovsky’s) for my own version of the Prequel Trilogy (Episode II as Episode I, this fan edit as Episode II and Episode III as is).

That sounds interesting. I’d really like this idea. But you should edit Attack of the Clones to introduce some flashbacks from The Phantom Menace in order to establish Anakin’s relationship with his mother and why it’s important in Attack of the Clones itself, otherwise it couldn’t work as Episode I.

That’s very true!

Rey cannot, at every turn, be assisted by other Star Wars characters. She defeats Kylo because Leia intervened. She defeats Palpatine because the spirits of the past Jedi intervened. She’s the hero. She needs to do it herself.

I find this absolutely hilarious given how one of the most common complaints haters never shut up about is Rey being too competent.

I mean, I feel like that’s exactly why JJ and Company did that exact thing in The Rise of Backpedaling: Fanboys got upset about her being too OP and not having any sort of familial connections to explain her “power levels”. Then BOOM! She’s a Palpatine and The Ghosts of Jedi Past help her in the end.

I’m also curious if there’s been any work to restore the Luke building his lightsaber deleted scene. Something I tried several years ago was having that scene take place on Dagobah rather than Tatooine, but I’m curious if a better quality version exists out there somewhere.

If you get any sort of inkling that something like this is out there, please let me know!
