OT Released AGAIN!!! (DVDAnswers.com article on possible new box set...)
Time
There are TONS of copies of the 2004 box set, as I see it everywhere I go. Is the price on that going to drop? Are stores going to yank them all off the shelves in the next 2 months to make way for the 2004 2.0 set? Yeah, constant re-re-releasing DVD's has become the norm, but that doesn't make it any less crass or stupid. If you already bought it the first time, you won't have the cool OT artwork on the new version. If you didn't buy it before, you'll be missing the bonus 4th disc on this one. Either way: it's lame. And Fool Screen?!? Come ON, already. Get rid of those 8 tracks of the DVD world. Network TV shows are in widescreen these days-- I think John Q. Public can handle the black bars now.

And I would laugh if the new release had any fixes, since we all know the errors on the '04 box set were a "deliberate creative decision."

That's kind of funny, considering that many CG shots in movies today look like awful, unrelealistic, bad Playstation reject effects.

When CG is done right (seemlessly integrated with real footage), it's a great filmmaking tool. Terminator 2 is one example of wonderful CGI. But when CG is used as a crutch, like it largely was in the SW flicks, and doesn't even look that good (i.e. Jabba), the end product is quite "static." What was accomplished in the OT with sets, matte paintings, costumes, and models is timeless, and is one of the many reasons why those movies are beloved, and still hold up (along with many sci-fi/fantasy flicks of the '80's). Bad CG is instantly dated, rips you out of the movie (LOOK, BAD CG!), and is just as poor as '50's sci-fi movies where you can see the wires.

More sweet OCP work. The '04 transfer may not be 100% perfect, but the clarity *is* pretty damn nice, so the ocpmovie mix makes a lot of sense.

FWIW, I thought the initial screen caps were fine, and I don't usually look at those as definitive representations of the finished product on my TV anyway.

And man, was Leia hot or what?

Exactly.

Was there ever an official excuse for why it looked like a muppet reject who just smoked a blunt? Seemed like it should've been one of the only things in that movie that actually worked.

I'm embarrassed to admit this is a change I don't mind.

No need to be embarrassed when it did look hideous.

I want him in empire and jedi!!!

Why? Unless you want Lucas to top Hayden in ROTJ for Most Pointless OT Change Yet.

That is awesome. I love that movie, and have been wondering about the LD goodies for years, ever since I found out about them. Ransom was another extra-laden LD that finally made its way onto extra-laden DVD recently.

Wal-Mart gets Star Wars bonus disc for ROTS

Good point about the prices. I don't know where you got 10 mins from, but according to the link posted by Ash595, that PVD (what the heck is a PVD?) has 3 discs, and the first 2 appear to be what's on the Bonus disc (makes no sense that disc 3 content isn't on it, since it's Sith-related-- unless it's overlap of something elsewhere):

Three Personal Video Discs (PVDs), each packed with more than 25 minutes of video that you love! This collection is designed exclusively for your VIDEONOW COLOR Personal Video Player! Just pack these PVDs along with you for awesome video entertainment that’s anytime, anywhere!

The amazing Star Wars movies have reached generations. Now VIDEONOW gives you this incredible three-pack of PVDs about two of its greatest characters: Luke Skywalker and Anakin Skywalker. Narrated by R2-D2 and C-3PO, these discs unfold the story behind both trilogies, and a third disc gives you exclusive behind-the-scenes footage of Jedi and Sith battle styles, lightsaber dueling techniques, incredible stunts and more!

* Disc one contains “The Story of Luke Skywalker.”
* Disc two contains “The Story of Anakin Skywalker.”
* Disc three contains “Behind the Scenes of Star Wars.”

These are the feauturettes fox television showed the anakin one with the premiere of clones on fox 25, and the luke one on a reshowing of star wars special edition, and empire strikes back special edition not the 2004.

not on this bonus dvd, which is on the videonow disc is behind the scenes making of star wars footage, which I imagine is the making of star wars with C3PO and artoo detoo.

This post was earlier in this thread, in case ya's missed it. If this the actual content, I assume each of those specials was 30 mins, so there's your 60 mins.

As far as Foolscreen goes, it's infuriating that by now, it hasn't been largely phased out. I can't believe so many new releases come in both flavors. Yeah, some people "don't like the black bars" but guess what? Deal with it. I'm sure after about 10 seconds of whining, they'll get used to it. I don't think John Q. Public would stop buying movies if they were only available in Widescreen. Plus, 99% of DVD players seem to come with a zoom function, and on the first zoom, you can create the illusion of foolscreen to your heart's content. Some players even have a "full frame" BUTTON. Plus, doesn't it cost more money to create the pan & scan version? *Someone* has to chop up the flick, no? Seems like studios would be saving dough by making just Widescreen, unless I'm oversimplifying the business/process.

I hate when both FS and WS are in identical packaging-- not even different color banners or anything. I was in line with Minority Report when it first came out, and if there wasn't a long wait and I didn't have extra time to peruse the back of the case, I would've walked out with FS.

And regarding the Bonus discs being packaged with FS-- couldn't someone just take both up to the service desk and explain that "Since you don't have the WS with the bonus disc, you're gonna go ahead and open this 2-pack, and you're going to give me the disc with the WS, mmmkay, thanks."? Or if they don't do that, suggest that after you purchase the 2-pack, you can go to the return desk, and they could just take back the FS as a return? Maybe? I don't know.

could the cover art be any more uninspired and cut and paste from different posters.

Well the PT posters were blah, uniform, and uninspired, so it's appropriately mundane.

Unless a Wal-Mart employee with a color printer and some scissors was in charge of the job.

Lucasfilm could of gotten anyone who posted in one of our "DVD Covers" threads to do a much much better looking cover.

SO true.

I have the Criterion CAV Ghostbusters and am looking into making a companion disc to the existing DVD.

Another addition to what's *not* on the new DVD release (and assuming this wasn't on the LD):

The trivia subtitle track (aka "fact track" on some dvd's), on the previous DVD of Ghostbusters. Why is this not on the re-release? No new features, and removing the trailers and trivia track-- wtf? Aside from consumers who didn't buy 'em the first time around, who is the new set for? Apparently, not fans.

Any update on the Ghostbusters action?

The Hayden idea makes sense on paper, but it was just unnecessary-- not to mention one of the most piss-poor hatchet jobs in all of Lucas tweakdom. Plus, the scene now makes less sense, since Shaw is still Anakin earlier in the movie. I assume the next Extra Special Ultimate Seriously It's the Last Time Edition will have Hayden in bad grayish recreation makeup as Vader sans helmet. It's also stupid because there's ol' Alec Guinness right next to him. The whole "redeemed" ghost thing is just another excuse for more changes.

Old people seem to be quite fond of Comic Sans. They seem to use it to be 'hip' for all the youngin's reading their materials.

It's also the credit font in a lot of 80's sitcoms. And the Bob Saget version of America's Funniest Home Videos.

Idea: A restored version of... Turkish Star Wars? :-)
Time
Why did they use the music from Indiana Jones?

And never having seen anything aside from that clip, what the hell does jumping around with rocks attached to your ankles and kicking rocks have to do with Star Wars? Or is that the Turkish take on The Force? Is the character maybe named Luke Rockclimber or something? I admit that I am totally intrigued to see more.

It was funny when the kid fell on his butt-- didn't look intentional.

Glad it's not Comic Sans. Worst Font Ever.

Wouldn't that Jedi/Sith logo have looked SWEET on the poster? And with like, Anakin's mug on the left, and Vader's on the right or something? I thought that overly uniform motif of the prequel logos (emphasizing Episode numbers and not movie titles) was a bummer. Think about all the various, cool OT posters/logos. Although, I believe that Sith logo was used as a soundtrack cover in the UK.

Prequel Trilogy Script rewrite
Time
Quote

Most of the players were perfectly adequate, it was bad writing and direction that was to blame.

I agree on the bad writing and direction, but I think most of the players were highly inadequate. Yeah, they were working with wooden, sometimes awful dialogue, but they should have enough talent to sell it at least a little more than the bad script on paper. Samuel L. Jackson is badass otherwise, but I still think he was miscast in SW. Palpatine was the only character with any real substance, with Obi-Wan a close second. The OT just had overall better actors for the roles-- and therefore better characters, of course. Fisher/Leia and Ford/Han were strong and had attitude and sarcasm, Hamill/Luke was an innocent yet strong fighter. Those levels and nuances were not reached in the PT, and I think it has just as much to do with Portman and Christensen's lack of ability as it does the crap script and direction. Portman is okay overall in other films, but her range is very limited, and Hayden's is nonexistent. He went from sulky to more sulky. I didn't buy his "anger" for a second, not even in the 2nd half of Sith.

Lucas should have listened and got more people involved as he did for the original trilogy....

Ain't that the truth.

From Jedi To Jesus
Time
"This is an autobiographical manual of how-to-make Christian "worship" films in an era when the vast Church audience is clearly ripe for them."

Just eliminate the middle man and worship Star Wars films.

This is from the cover (and apparently supposed to be funny, but it's more disturbing):

Got talent?
Got Jesus?
Guess who died for your talent?

Not *sins*; *talent*.

Unless talent = sins, in which case, Carrot Top is off the hook.
