Superman II and Superman III extended (Released)
Time
There is a copy of the Superman IV: Int'l Cut on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/SUPERMAN-IV-INTERNATIONAL-CUT-WIDESCREEN_W0QQitemZ6561066788QQcategoryZ12593QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

It's from the UK, but obviously not an "official" release, since only Region 1 US Supes IV was released there on DVD (I believe). Nice cover art, though. I think that's the first time I've seen a DVD copy of this anywhere for sale.

Anyway, those menus posted do look sweet. I wonder if there *will* be a box set a la Batman to coincide with the new Superman next year?

Idea: an actual 12-hour Star Wars movie... on HD-DVD
Time
Yes, it is thankfully different since the o.g. E.T. was included on the first DVD release. However, it was just recently rereleased as a one-disc version, and of course it's the new, altered version. It's nice that the original hadn't been totally ignored (probably to sate actual fans of the film so they wouldn't complain), but now it seems like it's on its way to being forgotten, and future consumers will now have to get it on ebay, or from a friend or something. Or, if enough time passes, or no one tells them about it, they won't even know it's not the original and has been tweaked.

Even though the changes were rather stupid, I thought they were relatively minor and few, so I don't understand why there couldn't be branching versions of both on a one disc release.

You know I would buy Saving Private Ryan if they came out with that version!

Me too! Or, if he changed it so it wasn't bullets, but a paintball game. And with a new title: Extreme Private Ryan.

The Official Dark/Sega Special Collection OT LD Release Thread (Not an SE Transfer) (Released)
Time
I am very intrigued by this version/project. I had been curious if it had ever been tranferred, but I guess it has not until now. It apparently has the last pre-Definitive Collection '85 audio mix that was used up until the DC release. I can't wait to see it all gone over with a fine-tooth comb (I'm a sucker for details). And adding this audio mix to and including it on a version with various different mixes would be sweet.

Release Date: 1987

Studio: CBS/FOX & Pioneer Japan

Technical Comments: 2.35:1 letterboxed transfer (a first) with English CX-encoded Digital Stereo Surround Sound

Comments: Three Standard-Play CAV discs (Cat# SF148-1196)

Other Comments: This "Special Collection" letterboxed transfer, the first ever for "Star Wars," was commissioned from the domestic arm of 20th Century Fox by Fox Japan. The transfer features a picture area which is shifted closer to the top of the screen (the top black band was smaller than the bottom - roughly 30/70). This allows more room for the Japanese subtitles which are confined within lower black bar margin. The film itself is spread over five sides and the package also contains a four-page insert

But ol' Spielberg has started in with his own pointless cinematic revisionist history and screwed with the modern "classic" E.T. (I love how even though things are referred to as "classic", which means that they're works beloved by many, infuriating changes still occur)

If he was so worried about guns, is he going to re-release Saving Private Ryan with everyone holding a rubber chicken or something?

Mace Windu = next boba fett

Ha-- yeah, I think in the event of an Episode 7, Windu will have a cameo and wink at the camera.

Or, if it's filmed many years from now, and S.L. Jackson as passed on, then a CG Windu wink.

Lucas's filmmaking rut

The OT is a complete story-- beginning, middle, end. And you don't *need* the prequel "backstory", because even though there may be some cheese amongst the OT dialogue, it nevertheless is a well-written story and is satisfying as is. The prequels provided new, mostly uninteresting (and mostly pointless) characters and a meandering, unfocused story that never picks up. And an everything-including-the-kitchen-sink Sith that still seemed largely like empty calories.

The PT is of course a different ballgame, but hindsight was unusually not 20/20 here. The CG stuff, the casting, the half-baked story... it's wasn't magic anymore, or even just "saturday morning serial adventure fun"-- it's strictly business. The biggest mistake was tailoring the original films after the fact to now fit the prequels, and not vice versa. Can you really watch Eps I-IV in order and have it make sense? It seems rather haphazard. Just too much time had passed between Jedi and Menace, and Lucas never bothered to hone his craft in the meantime.

Seems like Lucas has modified his directing mantra, which is now spoken on his way to collect the dough:

"To the bank, Jeeves... with speed and intensity!"

Well, that's good-- some good news is more than welcome to hear. And whenever you get around to it, the project does sound intriguing.

Help: looking for... The Twilight Zone: The Movie Preservation?

Pretty gruesome might I add. Its from a VHS compilation called "Death Scenes 2" (kinda like "Faces of Death" but without
the faked parts).

Ever since I read about the story of the filming, I've been morbidly curious about that footage, and if it survived, or what. What kind of comp is that? Is there anything else on it related to a filming accident? (I'm not aware of any other occurance like the TZ one) And was that something in videostores, like Faces of Death, or like, some underground thing or something?

The Mace Windu Debate
Time
I think the whole Mace/Sidious scene seemed very rushed, and wasn't helped by Anakin's ridiculously speedy turn to the Dark Side. Whether or not Mace was supposed to live or die, I can't imagine why it would be left ambiguous, unless it was just sloppy storytelling, which wouldn't be a shock in the prequels. Plus, the ambiguousness is even more perplexing when considering the aforementioned absence of the character (or at least the character's name) in other SW stories.

Quote

Whether sidious was simply faking his defeat when Anakin walked into the room is still unknown, however

I thought it was pretty obvious that he was "faking" it for Anakin's sake, so Anakin would intervene and take care of Windu. Like, "Oh no, help me, this bad man is hurting me!" But again, the scene was kinda sloppy, and could've been done more smoothly/naturally.

Quote

Sadly, Lucas chose to follow the movie cliche of having the black man die

Lando lived-- score another point for the OT.

I was wondering if it was gonna be on VHS in the UK. Makes even less sense not to rock the NTSC here then. Although I gather that the US tape preservation efforts won't be very wide scale.

We're probably never gonna have one format, but the different, largely staggered international release dates (not to mention the number of DVD Regions) don't make much sense-- seems to promote bootlegging and piracy. Except if you're George Lucas and have the juice to make it simultaneous worldwide.

Of the six Star Wars movie which is your LEAST favorite?
Time
I thought AOTC was pretty bad, but when I watched the deleted scenes, I liked it a little more. Some interesting, almost necessary stuff was chopped out in favor of extended fight sequences that would've made the movie make more sense and not feel so cheesy and forced. I still think it's lackluster overall, with "missed potential" being the key phrase. I forget if fan-edits have incorporated the deleted material or not? And if I remember correctly from some cut scenes sites, isn't there more stuff on the cutting room floor that wasn't on the DVD? Guess that maybe'll be on a Super Special 3-D Edition someday.

TPM is just dull, and weak. I don't think I've watched the original version more than twice-- I can't even get through it anymore. Talking about the PT now, Lucas seems to have reluctantly wrote them in a such a deliberate way, as if only one thing should be accomplished in each movie, then stuffing Ep. III like a Hot Pocket, and he really didn't have to. There were a million possibilities (regardless of whether or not he actually planned it since the '70's or not), and to have done "Ep. I = needless setup", etc. really was kind of a waste.

Info: the 2005 E.T. DVD...

There's three. I saw 'em with my own eyes. I have the original 1-disc, with an 8 min. featurette on it. After the 2-Disc edition came out, I was at Wal-Mart, and there was a 1-disc Spaceballs there with a different cover than the previous one. So I looked at the back, and lo and behold, no featurette. Different new 1-disc with even less content than before. Same with Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal-- both had loaded Special Editions, and then were rereleased in sad, pale feature-less versions.

I don't get it. Doesn't it cost money to repackage and tweak this stuff? Why put out another 1-disc version of a pre-exisiting release with very minimal features anyway, when you just put the 2-disc one out?

They sometimes still use the word "Bonus". And they say "Special Features" even though sometimes the only features are things like Chapter Selection and Subtitles. Marketing genius. And I think I've seen a "Special Exclusive Limited Collector's Director's Numbered Extreme Definitive Secret" Edition of something or other.

They are suposedly ment for the 'casual fan' who will pay £10 for the movie but cant be assed with paying an extra £5 for the second disk.

Yeah, good ol' "casual fans", who still buy pan & scan. Meanwhile, many of the 2-disc editions are actually pretty cheap these days.

Cool-- what's "CAV mode"? And in a seemingly ongoing quest to alter cinema, I think they removed the naughty frames of Roger Rabbit from the DVD.

And LD will always kick DVD's ass when it comes to fast-forward and rewind.

What's with the LD ff/rewind? I never had a laserdisc player, so I'm unaware. I would've been all over LD, too, if it wasn't a)pretty expensive, or b)mercilessly made obsolete before I had a chance. One of my local hometown Blockbusters started carrying laserdiscs soon before DVD's hit, and I was all excited at the prospect of seeing bonus features, and wanted to rent a player, or something. I think it might've literally been only a few weeks, or a couple months, and the LD's were gone. Is LD a more satisfying movie-watching experience than DVD?

Meanwhile, when DVD's came out, all there was to choose from was: The Mask (the first DVD I ever saw with bonus material), The Wizard of Oz, and Goodfellas.

And I HATE the forced DVD previews and screens you can't fast-forward, or skip over. I always think, "Damn, I this never happened with VHS." You have more consumer freedom on a dead tape format than the high-tech digital one. And the ongoing music on menu screens if you go to the kitchen for a snack and it plays repeatedly, endlessly-- that gets irksome, too. Minor quibbles, but still.

I'm surprised that there wouldn't be at least a limited VHS Sith release. Just put out less copies, or make it available online, or something. Is it also not going to be released on PAL tape? What about Canada?
