Info: The Frighteners - Signature Collection laserdisc preservation thread
Time
As a big Frighteners fan, I'm glad that this project is still happening, too. How many official releases have been botched? (or, contain, uh, creative decisions of a deliberate nature) There are even sections on DVD websites now that keep track of flaws, edits, cuts, missing elements, etc. You have to research every title before and sometimes after its release on the 'net to see what possible eff-ups, re-releases, versions, inconsistencies, etc, there are.

Back to the Future II & III had framing issues; Thundercats had an episode with no score on it-- in both cases, replacements were issued. Cartoons not shot in widescreen have black bars mercilessly slapped on them. Widescreen films are mercilessly panned & scanned. I have zero faith in ANY official release until it's playing on my TV. And even then, it's sometimes a crapshoot.

"FACES" (Released)
Time
This project is definitely cool, as was the Special Collection. Lucasfilm must be scared of making the money that they'd rake in by putting out a pre-SE DVD set of some kind (any kind).

Pouring over captures from both sets, it's safe to say they both have their strengths and weaknesses.

Are the differences that notable, or are they more of the subtle variety? I've heard conflicting reports that the Faces and Def. Coll. were nearly identical because of each coming from the same source, as well as being different in spite of that alleged fact.

If George had only changed Special effects for the SE and DVD, would people have complained as much?

Great point-- now Luke is thinking, "Who's *that* dude?"

I wonder if any of these ever even crossed Lucas' mind? Or if anyone said, "Uh, George, this is just wrong."?

***The Official NON-Star Wars FAN EDIT*** Release Thread

Are there any suggestions or projects that people are hoping for?

I would like to see a Batman Begins edit with: Katie Holmes' character cut out almost entirely (working around her scenes w/Scarecrow), cut down the training sequence substantially (and maybe use a bit of it as flashback or something), cut out the poorly done movie "origin" part (the Joe Chill stuff was kind of stupid, as was Bruce Wayne planning murder with a gun), the annoyingly blatant and repetitive "Gotham is a cesspool" lines, and maybe even all the annoyingly blatant and repetitive and (somewhat cheesy) dad references (okay, I get it, he was a good guy). I'm a huge Batman fan, and even though Begins was "better than the last two" (sorta like that Sith movie), I still have nitpicky fanboy problems with it.

re-edit ARMAGEDDON so that it didn't suck

Now THAT is a challenge.

The Arnie Super Edit sounds cool. You can actually make a sequel, too:

-Get Your Ass to Mars: The Arnie Super Edit Part I: elements from action/sci-fi heavy Terminator, Commando, Raw Deal, Red Heat, Predator, Total Recall, Running Man, Last Action Hero, 6th Day, End of Days, and Collateral Damage, etc. Possible storyline: using Recall as the basis, Arnie is lost in time, and spends the movie trying to get back to the red planet to his own time... or is he?

-The Pregnant Man: Arnie Super Edit Part II: the lighter Arnie fare: Twins, Kindergarten Cop, Junior, Jingle All the Way, etc.

Interested in everyones opinion when ROTS DVD Comes after Nov 1
Time
I'm somewhere between 1 and 2 (1.5, I guess). Ep. I and II are damaged goods, and largely in-name-only SW movies-- look, they said "I have a bad feeling about this", blahblahblah, but the proceedings were half-hearted and lackluster. I saw ROTS 3 times in the theater, and each time I felt the same moments of good and bad. Yes it was the "best" prequel, but there are enough little annoyances (and rather large flaws, i.e. "the quick turn") that I'm actually more psyched about any fan edits of it. There were cool elements there to make a good SW film, but it was still kind of all over the map to really stick.

That said, I am kind of excited to comb over it on the small screen.

Darth Vader birth scene, good or bad choice?

I think it would've been cool to end the flick right after the mask it put on, and a full-body shot of Vader-- boom, fade to black.

Just because they aren't good doesn't mean they aren't "true." I didn't like Die Another Day, but its still a Bond film.

Eh, barely. The spirit of Bond is so lacking in them, I look at the Brosnan films as in-name-only. Die Another Day, like all of the Pierce movies, was a cheeseball "action" flick with a character whose name happens to be Bond. At least that's how I see 'em.

NOOOOOOOO!!! Electrodes, please!!!
Time
The "Noooooo" is cringeworthy-bad, as is Vader saying Padme's name. It just sounds weird. All you needed for that scene was the classic Vader score as the transformation was complete.

One of the coolest things about watching the OT used to be imagining the backstory and how it ended up that way. Sort of like a great book that you imagine what the characters look like-- then a crappy movie is made from the book, and your mind is cluttered with the images of the crappy movie. That's what happened with the prequels. Now it's like, oh-- so Darth Vader, the most icy, scarily cool bad guy in the universe, started out as a whiny mop-top, grew up as a whiny teen, flipped to the Dark Side in a split second, and became a whiny murderer? Mmm-kay.

It's annoying that GL claims that Ep. I & II "had" to be boring, drawn-out setups for what happens in Sith, like there was just no other approach. BULL! You're George freakin' Lucas! Do what you want, and if you're gonna make backstory flicks, fill 'em up. They didn't "have to" be fluff. There was a pretty damn good starting point and endless possibilities with the OT as a 2nd trilogy.

Idea: Preserving Episodes 1-3?
Time
And also, according to early DVD reviews, the version of Episode III on the DVD will be the theatrical cut.

It seems that this may be the first Star Wars film released on DVD in its original version.

And Ep. III would be really, really easy considering the quality of the bootlegs.

If the official DVD is actually the theatrical cut, that's one flick that is pre-preserved.

Well I set to and corrected the aspect ratio and re-inserted the scenes ...but I lost the disc somewhere, planning on re-doing it because it's one of my all time favourites, a shame there's cutting room floor scenes that will never be seen again (pause the film when Darren's getting those images zapped into his head and you'll see a still of the 3 kids walking next to each other at school)

I love this flick-- a childhood fave, and from one of my favorite movie years: 1985 (esp. BTTF). I didn't know the DVD was botched. I still have my ol' US VHS. I'd love to have a "proper" version. Were the 1 or 2 deleted scenes on the US DVD on the UK one, too? And do you know what the deal was with the original home video release that said "Home Video Version"? Sometimes, that would be accompanied by "Some Music Rescored" or something (which I assume had to do with music licensing and whatnot).

Wal-Mart gets Star Wars bonus disc for ROTS
Time
I didn't want to start a whole new thing for this, but in a DVD review for Sith, it was revealed that:

This includes the "web documentary" series on the making of the film that's available on the official Star Wars website ( although only 15 of the complete 18 parts are included here , likely for disc space reasons - missing are Going to the Dark Side, Behind the Curtain and Ten Gallons of Buildings)

Argh-- this sort of Lucasfilm video release shenanigan isn't a surprise, but come on. I mean, if you're gonna go the whole nine, go the whole nine. If it was really a matter of space, couldn't a bit of the extraneous bits go (like some of the video game stuff), so the whole web doc could be included?

Episode I Digital Yoda Images!!!!
Time
To expand on what Sluggo posted about McCallum, from thedigitalbits.com (Lucas is writing the script for Indy IV?!?):

One interesting note from the event: Producer Rick McCallum and ILM animation director Rob Coleman confirmed that Lucas has continued to digitally massage the other Star Wars films. Specifically, Coleman indicated that the puppet Yoda from Episode I has been replaced with a digital Yoda that matches the character as seen in Episodes II and III. The CG performance was specifically tailored to match to Frank Oz's puppet performance. You'll be pleased to know that Coleman also told me, in no uncertain terms, that Oz's puppet work in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi will NEVER be replaced with CG. So you fans can rest easy. You'll get to see the new changes on a future, as-yet-unscheduled box set release of the entire Star Wars saga on DVD and/or HD.

One other interesting item to report from the event: McCallum expects there to be 22 Young Indiana Jones Chronicles DVDs in all, 3 of which have been completed. The discs will include some 66 historical featurettes, now in production. Work has been ongoing for about 18 months on the Young Indy DVDs, with about another 18 months worth of work yet to be done. If all goes well, the plan is to tie the DVD release to the theatrical debut of Indy IV (the script for which Lucas is expected to finish this Sunday).

Return of the Jedi - was it what it was meant to be?
Time
It's really interesting to ponder, and find out what was planned or discussed, and what was actually made. But even if it was meant to be something else (or something "greater"), I think it holds up rather well. The Ewoks really aren't all *that* annoying (and they kick some bad guy ass and are more relevant than, say, Jar Jar), and the flick still excites. I did see it in the theater, but I was 5 or 6, and didn't see it a whole lot on video. So watching it now, I don't really have tons of nostalgia for it-- I just think it's a pretty well-done movie for what it was, when it was. There are some great parts, and it was a decent wrap-up to the trilogy. Much of what was done to it for the special edition(s) was pretty shitty, though ("Jedi Rocks"?!?).

Now, if you wanna talk about a big disconnect between what something was meant to be (or could've been), I believe there are these thing called the prequels...

Apparently, like the Frighteners release, it's a 2-sided DVD-18. And it was mentioned that it contains the same specs as previously announced, minus a DTS track.

We'll see if it actually comes out...

I kinda did this, too. I titled it "Dogma: The Long-Ass Edition" and just threw all of the crappy-looking deleted scenes that were on the DVD back into the flick. I didn't pay attention to music cues or anything. It looks like crap, because the final 2hr 51min cut was compressed to a single-layer DVD and I also vertically stretched the deleted scenes to make the whole thing anamorphic. So yeah, it looks like crap, but I just did it for myself (hence why I didn't take more care with it, in terms of music cues, etc).

Ah. Well, the way things are going (I think there's a planned Chasing Amy re-release), maybe there'll be a Dogma X DVD...

OT Released AGAIN!!! (DVDAnswers.com article on possible new box set...)
Time
From thedigitalbits.com:

We've gotten word from 20th Century Fox and Lucasfilm that they're going to be releasing the Star Wars Trilogy: Limited Edition on DVD on 12/6, in separate widescreen and full frame versions (SRP $49.98 each). This will be a repackaging of the previous movie DVDs, simply without the 4th bonus disc. We've confirmed that these will be the "special edition" versions of the films.

And there you have it.

Sounds very cool.

The extended Jersey Girl is a likely release, but I'd also love to see Dogma with the deleted scenes reinserted. It was screened in a longer cut, and then sliced up for time, and I'm pretty sure Smith was happy with the final cut. But, it would be neat to see a sort of recreation of that initial longer version.

Yeah, KS is pretty good about getting the deleted goodies released.

OT Released AGAIN!!! (DVDAnswers.com article on possible new box set...)
Time
The Greedo scene and the '97 Jabba are different cases. Even though Georgie changed them again later, those were specific changes made within the movies-- I don't think Lucasfilm made any statements assuring that those were "intentional" changes, as if people thought they were accidental, or a result of poor QC. Those were instances of Lucas tinkering.

The botched audio on the '04 ANH was publicly admitted to be a "deliberate creative decision." So now there's gonna be a quietly "fixed" release? (would that also include less of a blue tint, and better saber colors, etc?) The recent Menace and Clones "re-releases" were nothing more than re-priced identical discs, so I don't expect anything different or earthshattering this time either.

I'm willing to bet money that this bonus-disc-less set is merely nothing more than a money grab on the heels of the Sith release, just in time for Xmas, with old-school art to dupe and/or entice fans into double-dipping.

Either way, I didn't buy the previous box set, and I ain't buyin' this one. If Santa wants to drop one under the tree, that's cool.

Maybe the easter eggs are the O-OT versions hidden on each disc.

Whoever said that there's "no proof" that this isn't just a repackaging-- it's pretty clear that's what it is. All the discs have is commentary, and there's no bonus disc. It's not like it's an entirely new release. Buying it if you own the '04 box set seems redundant. And if you wanna get technical, there's "no proof" that it's anything substantially (or even minorly) different. If it was some brand new, spiffy OT thing, I would think that would be noted.

Info Wanted: anyone done 'The Donny and Marie Show' Star Wars skit...
Time
I had the privilege (?) of seeing this on one of the various extras discs out there. Now, as bad as the Holiday Special is, that has a certain charm to it (yes, even Bea Arthur's inexplicable involvement). But the Donny & Marie thing is just awful-- it's obvious that the staff was like, "Hey, that Star Wars is mighty popular. Let's do something that barely relates to it, and whip up some bad songs and dance numbers!" "Cheesy horror" is an understatement.

I can't even remember how good or bad the quality was-- I think I blocked it out!

What is the Jay & Silent Bob one like? Is it mostly just the deleted scenes intact, or is there a lot of other material in it? I'd love to see the Jersey Girl "extended" early cut, since it supposedly was much longer than the released version, and remains a relatively barebones DVD thus far. (although, it may see the light of day now that Clerks X and the Mallrats 10th Anniversary cuts have come out)
