Idea: Clerks 1 1/2 Special Edition

I remember seeing a clip of that online several years ago and thinking it was godawful. It's an interesting curio, though, to see what a network does to water down something as irreverent as Clerks (ironically the very reason that anyone would want to make it into a show in the first place). It would be nice if it had been included on Clerks X. Maybe it'll be on the inevitable Clerks XV, or XX.

Has technology accelerated that much?

There is truth in jest.

This is a country where kids are getting diabetes, and being fat is considered a "health problem" that we sue fast food companies over. So the remarks really aren't far off. A lot of Americans are fat, lazy, stupid xenophobes who rush to a McD's faster than the needle goes north on a compass. Plus, it was kinda funny. And no one seems to have a problem when Borat does it.

And I've seen worse typos in these parts.

Info: Superman II Donner, and III & IV extended edits
Time

So with the release of all these Supes goodies, esp. deleted scenes for III and IV, any plans for Extended edits of these flicks? IV has always been the black sheep (although the theatrical version isn’t the worst movie in the world, and still had more spirit than the largely soulless rehash of Returns).

Also, it seems that although the long-awaited Supes II Donner cut is finally here, from what I’ve read, there are still things missing from the TV versions, with some changes made based on discarding Lester’s work, even though some of Lester’s footage was as originally scripted. Specifically, the Donner ending, and original plans to apparently have part I be a sort of cliffhanger, with the new Donner version sort of garbling some of it together, and repeating some things from I.

Putting a new label on the old disc of Superman III is just ridiculous. How does this happen without anyone noticing or checking the disc before it's included in a $70 box set? Yeah, it's nice of WB to rectify these problems, but after Tom & Jerry, Thundercats, Superman, and others I'm sure, where is their Quality Control Dept? Or, do they even have one? The "oops we messed up, send for your replacement" thing is becoming a regular WB tactic. Eliminate the middle man, and get some QC before stuff is pressed in the millions.

Of course, it IS preferable that something is done, rather than act like a 5 year old (i.e. the GL camp), and say that they meant to do it in the first place.

Well I think it would be best to just try and recreate the wipe. There's a topic about that somewhere around here...

Was there any particular reason why the wipe was discarded, and why there was a bother to change one single shot for home video release? (other than to create a seemingly obligatory "new" version for video)

(Don't ask me about the Simpsons season six))

What's the deal about Simpsons season six?...

"Black Friday" SW DVD Sales...Wow, Did Some of You...
Time
Best Buy has them on sale for $9.99 NOW. If you don't want to deal with Black Friday and really wanna snag 'em, go today. Not sure how long the sale is for, if it's past Friday or not. The Wal-Mart ones do come with the '80's movie comic tie-ins, but I didn't see any of those left in the one near me earlier this week (unless they're hoarding them for Friday's bins).

The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled Director's Cut (Released)
Time
Briefly back off topic, I work at Viacom (believe me, I'm not bragging), as a Master Control Operator (I basically watch outgoing TV feeds in a control room to make sure they don't go to black-- I'm not involved in the production of the programming). So when The Little Talent Show's first episode debuted recently, I first thought, wow this is bad, even for MTV. Then my second thought was, holy crap, I think I know that guy! Then the name was revealed as Garrett, and lo and behold, I recognized him from seeing him in some of his films and from this board. I didn't know that the show had been originally titled something else, but knowing how MTV operates, it's no surprise that they, heh, *recobbled* a project and re-edited it beyond recognition. It smacks of being altered in the editing room. Most of their "reality" shows have had all their "reality" stripped from them anyway ("retakes"? WTF?). Well, this is all coming from a channel called "Music Television", which literally airs about 10 videos a week.

So, I feel your pain. Shows being hacked into demographic-friendly, short attention span snippets of what they're actually supposed to be is par for the course for these channels. I *knew* that there must've been more to the show than what was aired, because many of the participants got little to zero airtime. Plus, your stuff in the pilot *was* definitely the funniest, and I assumed there had to be chunks of the Rounds on the cutting room floor. The finished product is 20 minutes of mostly nothing, whittled down from what could likely be a funnier series. As an employee, I'm saddened that they operate this way creatively. And as a viewer, I'm disgusted that this supposedly "irreverant" network more often than not plays it safe. There are entire series planned out (some that actually sound interesting) and promos for them are aired, and then they're cancelled before they see the light of day. Don't wanna upset the status quo too much. If you were Janet Jackson and you showed your boobie, your boobie'd have its own show by now.

Sorry to hijack here, but I just wanted to mention that I had seen the show as it aired, and say that it's too bad it wasn't what it could've been. If I was in the production dept, I'd try to score the raw tapes of the show or something, to liberate the unseen gold that surely awaits on those raw reels of tape, now sadly destined to become forgotten dust.

Info: JAWS...
Time
As I recall the film was rated -R.

I'm not sure about any missing footage, but this is highly unlikely. I know some '60's movies were later re-rated after being "M/A" (after the MPAA's still-used ratings were in place in 1968) or X (i.e. Midnight Cowboy is now R)-- but I'm pretty sure Jaws was always PG.

The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled Director's Cut (Released)
Time
This is fascinating stuff. I never really heard of this flick outside of this site (pretty sad). And like I needed another reason to hate Disney.

So was the movie retitled Arabian Knight in the '90's to cash in on Aladdin? And was it again retitled for video to distance itself from the "bomb" that it was in US theaters?

The Princess and the Cobbler DVD shouldn't be too much dough, since it's Australian, and unlike US vs. UK, US/Aussie prices are similar.

A Hard Day's Night (Preservation Edition)
This is a restoration project. This DVD will present the film in it's correct aspect ratio, including the original MONO Soundtrack and the MPI Stereo remix. The DVD will have audio extras from the Beatles, a vintage making of video, the out-take "You Can't Do That", and more.

What are the differences between this and the official DVD? From what I understand, there were things not included on the official release, but I'm not sure what they were.

And where are Help, and Magical Mystery Tour, and Let It Be on official DVD already?

Info and Help Wanted: HARD TO FIND MOVIES...
Time
I can't believe anyone else remembers/saw Super Fuzz! That DVD looks suspcious, and the reviews mention its poor VHS-like quality. I have it on VHS, but it didn't even play in one of my players a while back. It seems like one of those flicks with dubious rights issues, and never seems to have gotten a proper (i.e. okay quality) release on any format.

Hopefully, Howard the Duck will see the light of day with some features. It's a cheeseball flick, but it's entertaining, and wonderfully '80's (and classic '80's PG vulgarity). I don't know if Lucas is embarassed to have his name on it, but it's less embarassing than, say, The Phantom Menace.

Modified from its original version
Time
My DVD copies of the OT say "This film has been modified to fit my ego." Just kidding... I don't own retail copies of the OT.

and "Revenge of the Sith" had a small one, but it was very minor: one scene transition was a wipe theatrically and it's just a straight cut on the DVD.

I'm still wondering why? Why change such an insignificant thing? Was Lucas so happy with the entire film (hard to believe) as is, but this lone transition stuck in his craw that it had to be changed for home video?

Actually there already have been several launches of Music DVD and 'better than CD quality' audio.... much to the snoozes of the consumer public. Like you said it takes a much bigger leap in quality (or more importantly PERCEIVED quality) for a new technology to take root with most consumers. Blu-Ray and HD-DVD will look kick-ass on those of us with HD tvs, but on your still more common 27" tube set most consumers won't see much difference. What really helps new technology is a 'gimic' of sorts. I personally never would have thought PSP video would almost instantly have shelf space in Wal-Mart of whatever. But people like their portability. Go figure!

Good points-- the fickle buying public likes what it likes (Beta? Nah, VHS!). There had been other prior attempts before DVD at releasing a movie-disc format-- CD-I, and the thankfully-failed early DVD "Divx" experiment (disposable movies that you have to "rent" for limited access, with no features... genius). If you ask John Q. Public about Blu-Ray or HD-DVD right now, chances are, he will respond, "Blu-Whut?"

Also keep in mind that consumers still whine about "those black bars", and that even reissues of widescreen movies are released in effin' Full Screen. (and yet, there are faux-WS releases created out of things not shot in WS, i.e. Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker) Unless it's old movies shot in a non-WS format, everything should be released only in Widescreen. People would quickly get over it, and get used to the pesky "bars" once and for all. That would be a start. Meanwhile, there are bars on the *side* of the screen on WS TV's when the programming is not WS. Sigh... a vicious cycle.
