I'm kind of surprised nobody has taken the Ultimate Hunter Edition Blu, color corrected it and added a grain plate. Curious if that could make it look better than the first edition Blu...

No. The Ultimate Hunter Edition is literally just the old Bluray master with some color differences and an absolutely ridiculous amount of DNR applied to it. It's bafflingly bad. It has no factors in any way that might make it a better source than the old Bluray.

I did read in a few forums that it was actually a fresh new scan of the negative but then royally shafted towards the end with the DNR stick

i was quite fortunate to see a 35mm showing of it last year during an Arnie marathon in London. Problem was that it was 3:30 In the morning when it started and I fell asleep through most of it lol.

OK, so I guess the 1992 LD and the Signature Collection will need to be compared.

Same thing happened with The Thing, many home releases prior to the Signature Collection LD removed Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" due to the difficulty of licensing certain songs for home video at the time. (Which reminds me, I hope that eventually someone does a reconstruction of the theatrical soundtrack for National Lampoon's Vacation that restores "I'm So Excited" to the Ferrari scenes. I saw a 35mm print last year, that's the first time I ever saw it with the song intact without it being the network TV edit.)

The first two vacation films have already been done and can be found on the spleen

where do you find hard to find laserdiscs if not ebay because looked at another site that says it has hard to find laserdiscs. but the laserdiscs of halloween 4 and 5 with the ultra stereo tracks aren't on there how rare are these laserdiscs?

Both those laserdiscs are listed at LDDB for $15 each

I did not see them there, can you PM me a link?

DJ, let me know what you find. Maybe we can work something out where we can go 1/2's on the purchase to get this done.

:)

Thanks, I just went to LDDB again and see no buy option anywhere on either part 4 or 5, so I need to see actual purchase links, but I am not seeing any.

Apologies

had another look and the prices listed are 'past' selling prices. The bit above says shop availability which is zero so at the moment. I haven't used it in so long I didn't realise they tweaked the format (it only displayed current items for sale originally)

not sure if you're on facebook but there are a couple of great Laerdisc pages on there with a lot of guys (US based) selling titles

The Arrival [spoRv] BD-25 (Released)
Time

managed to burn this off today

Video and sound very good from what I've seen so far on the main feature

all intro videos and menus very unstable though :( picture breaks ups continuously and it takes a long time for them to progress from start to finish. This was on my 3D Panasonic player though. will try it again later on my multi region Panasonic (a much older model)

played ok on my BD-ROM on the laptop though

DTS audio preservation .... UPDATE 07 May 2015 ... Work In Progress
Time

Are the DTS CD's for the 1998 remake of Psycho avaliable? Italy have just released a BD for the remake (standard Universal catalogue release) but it only includes the English track as Dolby Digital 2.0. Would be awesome if the DTS mix was synced with it as the DTS hasn't been heard outside of the cinema release (no DTS DVD or Laserdisc was released as far as i know)

Fright Night Part II 1988 *RELEASED*
Time

Finially grabbed this and burnt it to BD (along with two more copies that I've sent to some close friends, one of them was totally stunned and so excited because she's never owned Fright Night 2 before lol).

will be treating myself to the German BD of Fright Night shortly and having a double bill with these two. I haven't seen them in such a long time (VHS era) that i honestly can't remember them so I'm looking forward to it.

will report back when I've watched it

OK - so it's been a long time coming - but here's the final details of the first disc of this project...

Dawn Of The Dead Ultimate Edition Volume 2 - Disc 1

Extended Version NTSC 16x9 synched with the following three tracks:

1) The rare 1996 George A Romero/Chris Romero/Tom Savini commentary from the original Elite laserdisc
2) The rarer 1999 Tom Savini/Chris Stravrakis first UK DVD pressing commentary from Bmg Entertainment
3) The brand new and pain-stakingly created first ever "Soundtrack only" track for Dawn of the Dead using the original drop cues

I'll write a lot more about the latter track when I've finished the whole disc, but know that it's on there and is a beaut, many thanks to the original donor of the cues, I hope you'll be proud with what I've done with them !

I've just finished the video and audio and I'm VERY happy with it ! Just the menus and authoring to go - this is a quite a big disc, it will weigh in at about 6GB, but I'll reduce it to a DVD5 unless there is mass uproar ! It's the audio tracks that are the most important things here, not the image - and they will be untouched in the compression stage.

So there we go - would love some cover art for the DVD_ROM, so klokwerk if you still have the means, it would be lovely to have it in the next few days ! Loved the original ideas (pre-Rocky Horror show image !) though both would be great.

This is NEARLY there, but I promise will be worth the wait !

Hi,

Could someone explain/give more details about that audio track #3, "The brand new and pain-stakingly created first ever "Soundtrack only" track for Dawn of the Dead using the original drop cues"

meedermow was supposed to write more about it but never did.

I'm asking since when you switch from this "Soundtrack only" track to the Extended Cut original audio track, the soundtrack doesn't match. In the "Soundtrack only", when Miguelito bites his mother you ear two Goblin punctuations which are not in the Extended Cut original audio track.

What am I missing there?

I also would like to point out that instead of adding pauses yourself to the track #2 on Disc 1 (Commentary by Tom Savini & Chris Stavrakis) to accomodate those 6 seconds of cut material on the 1999 BMG Distribution DVD (Plaid shirt zombie), you could have used the second BMG Distribution DVD release published in 2003 (quad poster artwork) as this version also has the commentary track by Savini and Stavrakis but already has the pauses added by BMG themselves to accomodate this version which includes those 6 missing seconds from the first BMG DVD release meaning that the 2003 BMG release is as uncut as Anchor Bay's Extended Cut.

Inside of the 2003 BMG DVD release Booklet.

Also, I don't really understand why you qualify this audio commentary track as "rarer" as those DVDs sell for $5 every corner. The "rarer" is the one only available on the LaserDisc right?

By the way, I'm one of the biggest Dawn Of The Dead collector's out there and have a website dedicated to collecting Dawn Of The Dead. Here's the address:

http://dotd.dannyduchesneau.com/

I know about demuxing/ripping DVDs (I'm used to play with "Cell Id") and Blu-rays so if you need anything from my collection I'll be pleased to help. I also work as a professional digital colorist specialized in color management as well as image and workflow quality control, from camera to authoring. Just PM me if you think you could use some help.

Thanks guys, Good Stuff!!

I supplied the two official CD's to Meedermow to create this track. One CD was the official Goblin score and the otehr one was a collection of libary music used in the film. I still have both CD's if you want more details

The Laserdisc commentary was taken from the Elite CAV LD boxset (agin, something i supplied back in the day)

I should have it somewhere but will need to fish it out. I'll look for until until someone else chimes in with the answer you need

So did you happen to find it? I cannot find any of my old projects lol, they have to be in a box somewhere but I really was hoping someone had it on hand and could let me know this, I really hope it does not pop up a lot.

I had a look at where I 'thought' it would be but couldn't find it so I'll have to keep looking. got about 25 spindles of dvd's like this stored away so it's there somewhere.

Info & Discussion: Fullscreen Laserdisc / DVD Preservations
Time

Regarding Top Gun, the original R1 DVD release has both widescreen and fullscreen versions on the disc. The widescreen version is 2.00:1 though

an idea I had with Top Gun was to have three different versions on a BD-25 (in SD) and the option to toggle between aspect ratios (1.33:1, 2.00:1 and 2.35:1) but have them all synched up to the same soundtracks

Info Wanted: 'The Dark Knight' - and others with shifting IMAX ratio...
Time

StarThoughts said:

I have to admit that I hate how this practice has been implemented. It wouldn't be so bad if once the decision was made to make part of a sequence in IMAX, then the entire sequence should be, and not be made up of shots filmed in both formats.

The IMAX version of Interstellar is a perfect example. Don't get me wrong, what shots they chose to present in IMAX were certainly breathtaking, but parts feel a bit more fragmented than they should because of the shift from 35 millimeter to IMAX, which effects not just the aspect ratio, but the resolution, brightness and saturation of the image. It was very distracting to myself, and several people I saw the film with, some of whom were not cinéasts.

Agree with your opinion there

It's annoying where an entire sequence is not formatted for IMAX and instead it's just select shots that last only a few seconds

Tron Legacy and Hunger Games were good examples of the shifting ratio technique IMHO as they had entire seqences displayed
