well AOTC could be like the Prisoner of Azkaban of STAR WARS. without voldemort (sith subplot) the characters all evolved a little, and it was like the intermission before thngs started getting darker. also in ROTS, if the jedi are percieved to be becoming corrupt, palaptine springing the sith on anakin could perhaps seem like a positive thing? (i think ID was talking about this earlier)

id like to see all the PT sabers turned to blue for jedi (just thought to mention that again for the hundredth time) if dooku is rogue, then i guess he could take any colour, but blue may be used. i liked him with yellow in magnolia fan's edition. maybe we should make a screenshot gallery of his many sabers.

an alternative is have dooku as a sith, but not revealed in AOTC, perhaps by shifting ROTS around, and somehow having it revealed at the beginning of it, maybe having that final scene of AOTC with dooku and sidious put at the beginning, but enstead of coruscant, it is somewhere else, maybe a huge battlefleet.

does the EPIII computer game have a different opening to the film?

i also agree on making palps as nice as possible, maybe even making him seem innocent to the point of idiocy. kind of related to the palpatine innocence point, is that if dooku is not a sith, AOTC could be sith/red lightsaber free, thus maybe even allowing us to forget about sidious, so maybe furthering him from that identity even more.

id like to see what he would look like merged with hayden, maybe some of the features could be tweaked perhaps?

that warchants clip was brilliant! i love ZULU, and the whole redcoats era. maybe the clones could be welsh?

ive skimed the SOTDS thread before, but it would have been over a year ago now. theres some brilliant ideas there, and im def up of retrofication. the posters that someone made for it were awesome! is there any chance we could compile a list of proposed changes? it would be really diverse, but it could be a good tool for people to pick and choose the ones they like to make sublists, so a mother AOTC list, then a SOTDS list, TOTR list etc. sometimes we get our wires crossed when discussing edits, as some edits will have alternative agendas that make certain clips work and others not. for instance, one edit may have anakin infatuated by padme from the start, whilst another edit may eliminate the love story until the end, and if i were to do one, id twist it so padme s in love with anakin. i guess it could almost be like a multiple choice edit page.

if anyone wants to, we could agree on a framework, and build a rough edit of AOTC via connected mockups on youtube, via  a playlist? some of my bits could go with SSWR bits, and then just make some little clips to connect them. it would be rough, but maybe create a decent framework for someone more....obsessive.....

another vid, to follow the idea of a 'not interested in padme' anakin. i think he should grow to her as she does to him. the scene wil hopefully make him seem loyal to jedi ideals, although it does seem a bit lifeless. ive HEAVILY editted the dialogue, added some inflections that will hopefully allow it to flow differently. just wish it was a bit longer.

also theres colour correction, and anakin has a deeper voice! attempted to add some inflection to padme's 'are you not allowed to love?' as if she is after him.

music is luke and leias theme from ROTJ, and sound from a sushi bar.

the opening could be the usual, big cruiser drifts in space, and maybe it gets attacked by some sort of pirates, or slave 1? slave 1 shooting at a starship probably wouldnt be that hard to suggest.

obi wan could trace jango to kamino, maybe kamino wouldnt be hidden, and the clones wouldnt be a surprise. it could be interesting if the dialogue from the floaty long necks suggested a variety of donors for the cloning dna? just spooling for thought.:P

just found the pitch tool. promising results! ill post up a few bitty bits soon.

wow, i didnt realise that. i just youtubed tribal drums, and thats what came up! the original DotD is my fav zombie film aside from shaun of the dead, so thats a pleasing homage!

ill def try to incorperate those ideas in when i have another stab. i think anything that feels pulpy is good. AOTC should be filled with it really, as it could be thriller/adventure as oppose to romance/war epic like most star wars. i watched the animated ewok series a while ago on an old computer, and the voices were annoingly high pitched, so i adjusted some dial (i think it was pitch) and it seemed to deepen the voice, as if i was just reversing some process that was supposed to make them sound like chipmunks. would adjusting the same control on anakin do the same? not sure if FCP has that option or not.

ooooh, really cool ideas SSWR. it makes great use of dialogue that is usually cut. i especially liked the lift part.

been thinking of a few ideas for an AOTC edit, trying to orientate it to a noir detective story that phases into the pulp jungle (indiana jones) ending. maybe we could bounce some of them around a bit to see if theyd work?

two key ideas are:

either an opening or early on in the film, BEFORE padmes attack, there are a series of assassinations on senators, maybe a characteristic bomb is seen? a cool scene, would be the deleted scene of padme addressing the senate, only for a bomb to interrupt her which kills some more senators. this would hopefully make her seem in more danger. im guessing the assassination attempt upon her would have to be viewed before the senate bomb.

obi wan doesnt discover the clones, they are not clones of jango. he finds jango somewhere else perhaps, and follows hm to geonosis. maybe the jedi start to question why the seperatists are trying to assassinate the only senators who are against the creation of the clone army. the clone army isnt a secret, and is perhaps a small experimental program, that needs the go ahead for full production

a possible alternative opening? maybe something to do with the seperatists, or the clones.

i got the crowd noise from a football game.:P i'm thinking of reinventing AOTC a bit, so any preconceptions of, well, anything can be changed. if the seperatists are really multiracial, then maybe we will get a better idea of 'a galaxy divided'. geonosis could be made to look like the anti-coruscant perhaps?

the aliens and multiple race would be good. it would also make jabba less random.

ill splice some TPM pod racing crowd in as an experiment.

vaderos' mockups are definitly the ultimate aim, the sand is the tricky bit though. ill try some more.

i am using 3 tools for this in FCP

1   RGB balance

2   Brightnes/Contrast

3   Hue/Saturation/Lightness

in the 5th clip ive added another layer using the 8 point garbage matte tool. this allowed the sand to be more yellow.

which bits work/dont work do you think?

yeah that will be easy enough, ill give it a stab later. it all depends on how different the whole edit is in the wider scope of things. insect king is really cool, but will require a new voice.

done stage 3, mainly focussing on the great idea from guitarfan to have silence before the monsters enter. i couldnt get the luke\leia theme to work that well and didnt have time to fiddle with it enough, so left it out. to be honest the music for me detracts from the quite shouting outside. where do you think it would fit best? the kiss, or the 'i love you'? (or both!?). i want people to be primarily involved with the characters, but in the back of their minds be aware of the looming noise outside. if most of the film has music, the silence could provide a break from the intensity, so we feel a bit more intimate with the characters. the original cut of AOTC felt like being told that they were in love because the director says so.

also need to add some stomping and heavy breathing to rhino thing at the end. i tried slowing down the entrance to make it a bit more menacing. any ideas of where to source that? couldnt find the puddle from jurasic park on youtube anywhere! if only there was a way to cut in some sinbad style stop motion dinosaurs enstead.

what do you think about the colour correction? ill get some comparisons up, its quite a difference, albeit hard to notice in isolation. if only i had vaderious eye for colour.:P

is there any decent FREE software that i can use to convert a DVD to an editable file type, be it avi, mp4, quicktime etc?

does anyone find that when editing a downloaded avi on a mac that the sound doesnt work? both AE and FCP both seem to omit the music ive had to rely on youtube rips just to pull the mp3 of them.

i've always wanted to do an AOTC edit, but dont really have the expertise to do so. i like the idea of the zulu references. if there was to do an edit, id want to hoard such references to create something along the lines of STAR WARS: THE PLANET OF DOOM, with a hard pulp feel to anakin and obi-wan.

thanks for the fcp pointer octorox. i just got hold of a copy of after effects, so had a go at masking a closer shape to jabba http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwVB-zpcxjk&feature=channel_page . for some reason it wont upload to HQ so its looks terrible. there is full colour correction on this version, but some bits do seem too dark because of the upload. next question though for an after effects whizz, is there a way to make a mask, and then set it to change shape? eg make a square blob for the beginning of a 5 second shot, and have it slowly morph into a circle blob at the end? could make jabbas arm movements and him shuffling towards the camera work better.

thats really cool. the whole composition works great as the clouds seem to be surrounding everything and feels sort of claustrophobic!

I like the idea of having the Hutts being a part of the Separatists. It makes a lot of sense for the greedy Hutts to join the Separatists which consists of other greedy factions like the Trade Federation.

I'd keep Jabba in the background though, and keep Poggle making the announcement in the arena. Geonosis is his planet after all.

Maybe it would be cool if we could put Jabba in the meeting Obi-Wan is spying on. That meeting is filled with cartoonish characters anyway, and adding Jabba might make it a little more serious. We could even use Christopher Lee's dialogue from the Clone Wars movie to work the involvement of the Hutts into the dialogue

thats a great idea with the clone wars dialogue, i will definitely try it. ive been thinking of MAYBE merging geonosis and tatooine in some fashion, but it could make the 'unknown planet in the armpit of the universe' a bit too busy.

having jabba as a background character would work well. i think having him talking was a bit too much 'look, TPM footage works!', but i like the idea of jango working for him like boba does, and the seperatist gang being partially controlled by him.

does anyone here use final cut? i have been making simple cut and paste edits using it, but this was the first one using overlaying objects. is there a way i can make overlayered footage in alternative shapes? i got the square by cropping the left/right/top/bottom sides and resizing it.

the whole idea of this edit is to provide a stronger link in ROTJ for the JABBA opening, it will hopefully make it more of a culmination of six films as oppose to three, with JABBA being an old goon from the previous series.

jedimasterfisher mentioned on youtube that it doesnt work as well without music, i think i agree, but the music i always found conflicting with the 'impending death' emotions that the scene could be providing us with. does anyone have any ideas for an alternative 'anakin-padme' love theme that could be used? may try it with the 'luke-leia' theme.
