i like the idea of the trade feds speaking an alien language. the interpretor droid would make sense then, and could perhaps be placed in to translate lines more.

maybe at the end, when the viceroy is captured, he awkwardly utters "we - surrender" in english. would be quite a strong moment.

i think the best jar jar solution is rotoscoping. i did love the idea of c3p0 joining them enstead. a compromise however would be having them both there, and jar jar being translated by 3p0 too.

i guess it depends what angle you would be editting from. in this case you are suggesting editting an OT to fit with themes and visuals from the PT, which would be interesting to see.

personally i would argue a less flashy lightsaber duel with more banter creates a greater depth emotionally, ie luke's run at vader in ROTJ after holding back all film.

back to the earlier point though, it would be interesting to see. i'd argue for editting down the ep III duel a bit, and maybe recutting the ep IV duel to make them fit each other.

just something i posted over on spence's TPM thread

here's an idea for the ending:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VU2jga_fbnE

thinking back to your ROTJ edit, perhaps it would be an appropriate bittersweet finale. by the time we see anakin cremated in a similar way, its like he lived up to qui-gon's legend.

  • music would need clearing up, but you get the idea
  • yoda talking to mace is really unneccessary i think. plus the whole rule of the two is a bit silly in my opinion
  • i had a go at making a matte for the pan up. that could be worked on a bit better
  • you could lead the scene with the naboo mourning scene from ROTS perhaps
  • also played around with reversing some shots for the motion differences with bits placed on top.

was thinking earlier aswell. in KING KONG. the film both starts and ends in New York. but there are big differences in the time of day and decor between the two visits.

could you perhaps consider our first outing in naboo to be at night, then the second to be in the day? or perhaps the other way around?

ahh clones on naboo. nice.

someone suggested ages ago that the neimodians wouldn't be "oh my god JEDI!" but more like "what the hell is a jedi?". knocking them out of the limelight, could make the galaxy seem larger, but also support han's later ignorance to the force.

introducing them over the bridge would be a good call. i'd like to see it hypothetically at least. i wonder if we would lose some valuable character building though perhaps? don't forget, if this is the first stand-alone-film, we cannot have any prior suggestion from the OT.

was thinking of maul on the bridge of the trade federation battleship. but if you are avoiding anything too crazy technical it may be a bit inappropriate.

slave trading would be cool, especially if tatooine is run down as a result, so can show what naboo could become like. maybe even a plotline about the trade federation stripping the planets resources could explain it being a desert? would increase the threat level.

could the trade federation have a new name? something obvious like the space slavers? ANH was pretty black and white with the good and badguys. trade federation sounds a bit ambiguous. i mean trade is sort of positive, and federations are quite healthy.

ugh. i was looking at some screencaps, and anything in that main street in theed seems to float! check out the scene where palaptine lands at the end and the royal guard feet.

its interesting to see which holds up under hi-def scrutiny. real sets with real puppets, or layers of pixels.

how long do you reckon this will be? do you think you could have dooku introduced as either a jedi or the secret hooded menace? or maybe have maul on the bridge giving orders?

will you be removing the prophecy and the rule of the two?

as much as anakin isn't luke skywalker in this film, i have always wondered if the film could play more like ANH with it leading from him on tatooine, with the characters meeting him there. then they go to coruscant, then all ends in naboo. earlier cut naboo footage may be recycled perhaps.

to be honest though, approaching it as a 'stand a lone' swashbucklng film that aludes to a greater mythology, would be down a similar vein to ANH and other films like the first POTC. i like to imagine what TPM would be like if it was just titled "Star Wars" and we pretend it was made first.

does anyone know the situation with the blu-ray sound channels? i believe clone wars blu-ray had an independent channel for speech and some SFX.

The dialogue and sound effects aren't independent of the blu-ray mixes. the music still bleeds into the centre channel. It would have been good if the new mixes had gone down the Clone wars route, but they haven't.

arrghhh! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

that really is SO frustrating, I bet its still shit and all over the place like the DVD release. such a joke.

thanks for confirming though adywan!

yes! the chinstrap has changed. i was going to say that the lines weren't an inconsistency on the helmet, as the image was flipped, thus everything would be sort of inconsistent (trick question!).

just a question to the general more learned masses. i heard GL made an initial cut of ESB when he was mid-breakdown which was overall perceived to be terrible. upon reflection he agreed, so Marcia and Kershner made their cut which was the final item.

a) is this true?

b) if it is, does that mean the footage used in this original cut was then useless, so is ESB made out of extra takes and alternative footage?

ALSO, just paranoid here. alot of people have declared they will not be purchasing the blu-rays. does this mean, that legally speaking, if they watch a fan-edit, WHICH HAS FOOTAGE FROM THE BLU-RAY, they will be committing piracy? i suppose we have to be careful what is announced just incase the legal squad start pointing fingers.
