I see what you mean. Even it could be redone so we see him being held, and being left off the floor at the same time perhaps? It would be good if he left him whilst delivering the line, or using the force to slowly lift him whilst just standing there.

i would remove the name ENDOR altogether, and just have people refer to it as the "sanctuary moon", just as tatooine and hoth* are not refered to directly by name (*hoth system, not planet)

gas giant is a cool idea. I was wondering if the whole planet could be within some sort of nebulous cloud like NEW CAPRICA in BSG. absolutley hidden.

as pandora was mentioned, in ROTJ it could be good to have a flyover like the strip mining in Avatar, so the empire seems to be harvesting the planet for its materials.

alright, for anyone interested here is something i've just been working on for the past few weeks.

its far from finished. i'm waiting on a replacement graphics tablet before i can iron all the obvious flaws out.

The font doesn't look exactly the same though but it's near enough.

Sort of missing the point though. Ultimatley every character is a Plot Device, but really, what does Boba Fett do other than add a bit of eye candy and remind us of Han Solo's plotline from ANH?

There will always be an issue of perspective with the OT as most of us played with out Boba Fett action figures and read about his wider exploits more than we watched the films.

Compare Boba Fett's role in ESB and the Holiday Special Cartoon. He is the story, therefor his naming is essential as we do not know his job role until much later on.

Also - how many things in ANH and ESB is never named? Tatooine, Lars (the surname), The Executor, Tie Bombers, Lobot etc etc. Conversely stuff is named but never shown which works awesomely - but that is something completely different.

Really though, Boba Fett is a CHARACTER? Boba Fett is a PLOT DEVICE.

Unfinished Ideas

Hey guys. Updated all the links in the first post, hosting over at google docs now, so that might stick!

Let me know if there are problems.

My idea was a bit more extreme, and completely redesigned ROTJ. No more Jabba the Gangster, No more Bothan Spies, No more Rebel Costume cupboard.

It is a massive fan-film subplot about the the capture fo coruscant and using the dormant speratist fleet like the army of the dead in LOTR. Before you read on, realise that this plot line is not really about a sequence of events, but more about themes and an overall ending. Not all the ideas were properly worked out, and some of them stem for what MY perfect saga would be like. This would also be my ideal approach to the PT.

Anyway, the rough idea,

The crawl describes how since the events of ESB (we are now 5 years on) the empire has struggled more and more to keep the peace. Independent rebel insurgents (separate to the alliance), have by some miracle have caught the empire off guard and taken Coruscant. The Rebel Fleet (now much bigger) rush to their aide to help them keep the planet.

The rebels now are stuck in a take-and-hold scenario, and are in a constant battle to maintain their hold of the capital. This is how the film opens. We will follow some new characters, which would essentially replace ackbar, mon mothma and general nadine later on.

Either through exposition, or through even more footage, Rebel commandos breaking through a last Imperial Garrison encounter a command room, to which they see something terrifying.

Back to rebel command, our three leaders discuss the imperial strategy of guerilla tactics, how the war is finally at a turning point in the Rebel's favour, how pretty much every rebel staff member is now on coruscant, and that the emperor has disappeared. Suddenly an interruption from a commando, and then the same hologram of what they saw earlier with equally horrified expressions 'It cannot be!'. Then they ask about Princess Leia's current whereabouts, which would lead to Jabba's palace.

Film follows as usual.

The OMG moment characters keep getting turns out to be the Death Star II, which would be initially revealed in the briefing later on.

Jabba the Hutt would be set up to be the final surviving separatist leader in the PT as well as a gangster. Some additional character or device from his palace would allow the rebels to reactivate the droid fleet.

The Droid fleet is required to defend coruscant whilst a Rebel Task Force travel to Endor to attack the Death Star.

The Emperor escaped Coruscant as we already know, and it turned out to be part of his plan all along to get all the rebels in one place. He plans to use the Death Star to replace the capital (after blowing it up).

Luke and Vader's story will carry on as usual, but now will float around these much larger events.

New characters introduced in this new opening may continue appearing during the various battles. They could even feature in linked PT edits.

That is not tension, that's a plothole. Tension would be Han and Leia having that drink with Vader in Cloud city and Lando attempting a joke as an icebreaker.

It might work as tension if we knew that Palpatine was the only one who knew of the rule, but that would have needed to have been mentioned previously, and then in the film itself as a reminder. Also lets remember, Vader gives NO suggestion that he is even contemplating kiling the Emperor in ROTJ. He even explicitly states that "I must obey my Master" (Although all these things might be changed etc etc)

In the days before the PT, Luke is instructed to kill his father because he is old and broken, and because the luke we knew from ESB and ANH would have really wanted to do that (hence how his character has developed).

I'd like to cut out the sith ALTOGETHER. It makes the choice to make a quick easy, but wrong, choice more relevant to the audience on a personal level.

Surely the whole problem with them trying to turn Luke though CONTRADICTS the rule of the two. Did they organise the whole thing with each other, knowing of an imminent betrayal? (Surely it would have been obvious?)

I'd start ROTJ with a whole new subplot/opening focusing on the Rebel Alliance. If you remember how how ANH begins, we are basically introduced to a conflict that is much larger than the one we follow our heroes engage with (except right at the end). Maybe the size and scope of the film just needs to be BIGGER, so when we are reintroduced to Luke, Han and Leia, we understand that they are just players in this grand 6 film saga, not the entire focus.

i have final cut and a limited unprofessional understanding of its full application.

how about a sort of "multiple choice" approach? keep a list in the 1st post of all the contributed clips, and an idea of the film could be watched clip by clip.

brilliant idea though, if anything we need to keep the energy going.

the best way i have thought to keep up the time in the film would be an additional seperate subplot. this could be some extra pilots or troopers who have parallel experiences. perhaps at this point it could just be storyboarded or scripted, but available as a resource for the future.

Whilst the canon debate is up though, it could be good for an editor to clarify what THEIR canon is perhaps? My reason being is that I find it INFURIATING when one puts an idea forward to edit one film, and then receive about a dozen nonconstructive comments on how that would affect another film WHICH YOU MAY ALREADY HAVE PLANS TO CHANGE!

An example of this could be say ADYcanon, and TROOPERMANcanon, which may have plans, either real, planned or theoretical to edit a broader selection of the films.

Perhaps it would be a good thread to start, where editors make single posts with THEIR canon explained, and links put in their signatures?

The way I see the whole "canon" and "EU" debate is like critiquing a movie which is roughly based on historical events for its historical inaccuracy. Generally people watch films to be entertained and enlightened, not shown a series of events and scientific facts.

I love the comics and literature, and spend hours on wookiepedia, but really a good film is about message and narrative. Not canon.

i could arrange some copies for distribution if it would bring some more attention to the edit.

i think this edit will always be on the ambitious end of the spectrum, but a better workprint could always be made.

I'd say its far form finished - ideas wise - but you have got around a few conundrums that i've struggled with myself, so this could start to be bounced around a bit i hope!

I think we could still lose some of the ewok shenanigans later on, but i like the idea of the shield generator being blown up mid battle. i could imagine the sounds of the distant battle echoing down the halls.

Could some of these more savage ideas be sneaked in when, han, luke and chewie are captured by the ewoks earlier on? enstead of being cooked alive on a pole (ie the cartoon cannibal thing - enstead of skinned and gutted like a regular animal would) for a banquet. 3P0 translates that they are to be "executed like the other invaders" to which han could glance around to see the corpses of various imperials?

^this would be good. i never commented before, but i like the ideas posted. i really think ewoks could work, where ROTJ goes wrong, is the focus almost becomes ENTIRELY on them in places.
