Rey Nobody for LIFE. I’m still in denial about Rey Palpatine, even though I thought it was coming ever since I saw her stab-lunging at the end of TFA

Ah yes, I forgot lightsaber forms are genetic.

Honestly though, doesn’t it sound like something JJ would think? Like, unironically??

I remember going “He’s probably doing this as foreshadowing… Ugh.”

I’m ready to be done with all of this. I’m committed to finishing this out, including a Nobody cut, but I’m so ready to let this whole thing be finished.

Okay cool. I was still waiting on a couple of revisions to be submitted for the Knights of Ren audio, but I’ll go ahead and get a Google Drive folder made with the current sound pack. I’ll get it to you in the next day or two.

This is a thought, this is all it is, just a thought - what if we put ourselves in the shoes of someone that has never seen the movie and watches this cut, they have never seen any press about Palpatine’s return, but the first they see of it is on Exegol when Kylo meets him…what if, we keep the suspense going a bit longer, so, you have no mention of Palpatine in the crawl as planned, you then see Kylo go to Mustafar, get this pyramid thing that has sith noises coming from it, then we cut to Chewie, Finn and Poe getting the message, back to the Falcon landing back, Rey asking what’s the message? Then you hear what sounds like Palpatine’s message, interspliced with Kylo landing on Exegol, dubbed with the message, then you cut to the discussion and after Poe says, somehow Palpatine has returned, you cut again to Kylo on the lift, cut back to the rest of the resistance discussion, ending with Leia’s line and then cuts to Kylo hearing the voices and meeting Palpatine… it’s just a thought like I said. Would it work without disrupting the audio and music? Just think the simultaneous revelation on Palpatine to light and dark might have more impact…

Krausfadr’s edit is placing the Palpatine reveal much later in the movie:

Give that a look?

Why did Hux’s “I’m the spy.” line get removed in WP V3? Poe and Finn’s reactions feel kinda jarring without the line.

The next new stormtrooper voice line sounds like it was obviously added in. I think the audio there could maybe use a little reworking or maybe a better filter.

Agree with both of these.

Yeah, me too. Axlanian, do you think you could make a regular voice recording sound like a FO trooper?

I could, but I think the concern here is more the dialogue and delivery than the effect. “Stop talking” could work, but “Kill me now” is a bit too parody-like, as others pointed out. The lines feel like Red vs. Blue. I’d be more than happy to mock up some alternate dialogue options if you’d like.

The lack of Prequel connections bothers me the most with this trilogy. Someone asked JJ Abram’s why there wasn’t many and all he said was that Rey deflecting force lightning was a prequels reference, so stupid if you ask me. Deflecting force lightning is just common Star Wars knowledge.

Yeah, when they showed that ending montage of star destroyers going down and it had two OT planets and JJ’s baby Jakku, it was 100% clear that he wanted nothing to do with the prequels.

Unpopular opinion here:-

I’ve just watched Hal’s v3 workprint.

I really feel that the absence of the much hated ‘light speed skipping’ sequence slightly compromises the scene.

I know Hal’s reasons, I know a lot of people are wrapped up in the ‘tech/science’ of it…but I think it’s absence is jarring. The falcon/spy scene now just ends much too abruptly and lacks a crescendo…

Hal have you tried putting it back in? I’m not saying you have to like it…but have you tried it to get a feel in how it works from a pacing perspective?

I have to agree

+1

Man, I wish it were at all feasible to have all of you over or rent a theater or something and have 9 to 11 Saturday nights in a row for a viewing of this whole thing. With popcorns, prizes, drinks, and an anonymous ‘Apples to Apples’ style game of drafting innuendo lines from each movie. Possibly even video games, like a mini-tournament of N64 Racer.

I’ve thought a few times of getting myself a Hal9000 shirt just for such an impossible occasion.

Maybe we can do a joint Zoom viewing?

I did want to ask, because I honestly cannot tell, was my voice in the sampler? Just find it funny that I can’t even tell if my own voice is there after the effects. Lol (And if so, I’m frankly glad it didn’t make it to the finalists!)

You were, you even got some votes! I didn’t put the full vote count because I worried some might be a little embarrassed if they didn’t get any votes, but I can post a sheet of who was who for each Knight if you’re curious

Nah, I was just amused at really not being able to tell!

If anyone is curious, here’s the list of who was who: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1e2UvJ-NrXwSyoi-peQLArYNQQngoUxaN0QDxkdWaqZM/edit?usp=sharing

It’s color-coded so you can easily find yourself in each column you submitted for.

Okay the votes have died down, so here’s what we ended up with. I tracked all of the votes but I myself did not vote since I knew who everyone was and wouldn’t be unbiased. I’ve included the top three for each knight in this chart:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/13gq_LrOPef0JmLNW94ZSUPJSGiyus-rd9c1OeU8bRs4/edit?usp=sharing

I made a weighted score by awarding one point for being a voter’s first choice and a half point for being runner-up, but ultimately sorting by total votes yielded the same ranking. As you can see, I was in the top three for each, so I have an important question for everyone:

My plan was to create 2 fully produced voice packs for each Knight so that editors can have their final say in picking which of two voices they want for each Knight. Realistically, I can do two voices (like Kuruk and Vicrul) and have them sound different enough from each other, but the whole point of this was to get more voices in here so I wasn’t all the Knights. Given these top three (I’ve also included the votes mrbenjamino got for his alternate Ap’Lek submission), who does everyone think the two final voices for each Knight from that spreadsheet link?

I’m thinking this:

Ap’lek: krausfadr (#5) & mrbenjamino (#8)
Kuruk: Me (#8) & my wife (#5) - who was the only female voice we managed to get, but people seemed to like!
Ushar: poppasketti (#3) & mrbenjamino (#8)
Vicrul: Me (#8) & dgraham (#3)

And if we were to just pick one of each, I’d personally say:

#5
#5
#3
#8

When we’ve communally decided on two, I will reach out to those who will be the final voices about potentially re-doing a line or two so nothing feels out of place in the movie.

LASTLY! I plan to still include a couple extra “Traitor!” shouts from different people in the sound pack, so that might be a 5th voice.

Thanks so much for your help, everyone!

Also, idk if it’s too late for dialog suggestions, but imo this group collectively has way too many uses of the words “traitor/traitorous/betray” and “scavenger/scavenger girl.” For example, I’d definitely go with the “Palpatine” line on Kijimi and the “join your father” line on Exegol, and Ap’lek’s “Traitor!” feels too much like a TFA meme.

You’re definitely right. The lines are variations on the same thing. When we’ve pinned down the voices (which will likely be within the next 24 hours) we’ll pick the best specific lines for each so that they’re not redundant.

Since the first big version of Ascendant is sticking with Rey Palpatine, I wish there was a moment in the film where we had a version of the Emperor’s theme, but with a female choir. Like maybe you could hear it as Rey is entering the Exegol temple. But I don’t even think a female version of the Emperor’s theme exists anywhere. Or even a dark side version of Rey’s theme.

If you have a specific version of the Emperor’s theme that you like, I’d be happy to add a female choir on top of it doing the melody. I just wouldn’t want to have a non-John Williams track in the movie, so I wouldn’t do a track from scratch.

Excellent job processing these! Obviously the priority should be on the best deliveries, and each of them had great options, but it would be nice if each of the voices were different enough to tell them apart from each other, too.

That’s the plan! Once we’ve got the preferred deliveries, I’ll fine-tune the processing to those 4 specific voices so they each sound unique. Thanks for the input!!
