Yes, I think my next step has to be assembling a decent desktop PC.

People, I am typing to you now from an old Sony laptop on which I have managed to crack the LCD screen. There is a crack, with associated splodge of blackened pixels, running from the upper right of the screen up to the top in the middle and also down to the lower left. It has been like that for almost two years.

Actually, I wonder if Jamie Foreman might be good. I think he could pull off the role. Only thing is he was in a recent Doctor Who episode - 'The Idiots' Lantern' - as the Dad who was informing on his family and friends.

That was my intention. I realise VHS transfer is not going to look tip-top but I'm hoping that, with good quality equipment and cabling, I'll be able to make the best of the remastered 1995 widescreen tapes.

Actually, I'll need a 2-phono stereo lead for the sound, won't I? S-VHS doesn't carry sound, does it?

Ah, S-VHS! Of course!

So, S-VHS connection to video card to DVD. That's doable. And I'm much more likely to get a new desktop than a DVD recorder, actually.

Can you get dual-layer drives in PCs in the UK?

No, there's been no change so far.

I don't recall there being any tradition of changing the TARDIS to suit the Doctor. I think it just changes when the designers get bored with the current design.

That's not to say that it isn't a good idea, though, I quite like it!

I think the disappointment I felt in the movie version was due to its lack of character. The makers were obviously falling over themselves to emulate The Lord Of The Rings.
What they should have realised is that CS Lewis' fantasy was a different beast to Tolkein's and merited a different approach.
The pointlessly OTT action scenes (particularly under the frozen waterfall) were so histrionic that it was almost funny. And the photography was all so bright and cheery, in that oh-so-Disney way, that it couldn't hope to match the brooding gloom of LOTR.

Re. Earth-bound Doctor Who, I was disappointed by the Cybermen double episode. A few minutes in I was thinking "oh great, he thinks they're on a parrallel Earth but it's going to turn out to be Mondas".
