The Emperor & line change in ESB SE 1997
Time
What?!

So, they dragged the new Death Star through the asteroid field?
Or they were building it near Bespin?

And the 'difficult' concept of using a shuttle to get from Cloud City to the Executor... right...
Did he think everybody would imagine a Star Trek style transporter, or, perhaps, some kind of rope ladder?

Lucas has some weird ideas, doesn't he?

He reminds me of Michael Jackson, in a way. Both had their biggest successes in the late seventies / early eighties, both became super-rich, both became recluses in their huge estates and both now seem a little disconnected from their original strengths. And they're both slightly loopy...

Ages of Luke & Leia
Time
I think that, because Leia is able to talk a little about how her mother behaved ("beautiful, kind but...sad"), it follows that Leia must have been a few years old before she was parted from Padme. The idea that Luke was taken away by Obi-Wan Kenobi to Uncle Owen & Aunt Beru straight after birth, while Leia stayed with Padme seems to me to have the most merit.

Perhaps Padme & Leia could have gone to Alderaan under Bail Organa's protection, meaning that Leia grew up with the Organa family, making them the most natural guardians once Padme was gone (however that may have occurred).

I suppose that, because Obi-Wan does use the words "twin sister" in ROTJ (after Yoda's death), one must conclude that Luke & Leia are the same age.

Good work on the actual ages, by the way!

Apologies if this is old ground for the forum - please point me to the relevant thread if so.

In the original cut of ROTJ Luke & Leia have a chat just after the Ewoks have agreed to help the rebels attack the Imperial base on the Endor moon.

Now, Luke opens with: "Do you remember your mother, your real mother?", to which Leia replies: "Just a little bit, she died when I was very young"

Not: "No, she died when I was born." Not: "Well, no, but I've had dreams/visions about her."

Luke later says: "I have no memory of my mother."

Surely this exchange tells us that either:

(a) Leia is, in fact, older than Luke, or

(b) remained with Padme for a few years before being adopted by the Organas.

This was unaltered in the 1997 SE. I haven't seen any subsequent cuts or revisions of ROTJ, as I boycotted all releases of episodes 4-6 since the 1997 SEs.

Due to this scene, I was bitterly disappointed by the scenes at the end of ROTS, as they surely fly in the face of this scene from ROTJ, don't they?

The Emperor & line change in ESB SE 1997
Time
I don't know if anyone's talked about this on this site before, so apologies if I'm covering old ground - please point me to the apropriate thread if I am.

The scene in the original cut of ESB where Mr Vader has a chat with Mr Palpatine - did Lucas change the performance to one from Ian McDiarmid for the current incarnation of his "artistic" "vision"?

This is one change that I actually would have welcomed in the 1997 SE.

Personally, I feel that ESB survived the best in 1997, with largely cosmetic changes made. The one thing that grated was an apparently insignificant change - Mr Vader, in the original cut, just after Luke has thrown himself into the void rather than join him, is walking through a corridor in Cloud City and James Earl Jones growls: "Bring my shuttle" - expressing very well Mr Vader's emotional state at that point in proceedings.

In the SE release of 1997 the line was changed, although the same shot was still in place. The rather flabbier and less expressive phrase: "Alert my Star Destroyer to prepare for my arrival" (or something equally as crap) is used. Where, before, we had a terse, explosive line, which JEJ uses to full potential, we instead have to suffer through a line which is twice as long and says exactly the same thing but with less expression of Mr Vader's feelings.

This one change annoys me like no other, because, as I say, ESB otherwise was relatively unchanged.

Quite how this gets ESB anywhere closer to the fabled "artistic" "vision" I have no idea...

I should point out that I have not purchased any DVDs of any version of any of episodes 1-6 as yet, so I have not taken into account any further revisions subsequent to the 1997 release.

russs15 - Love your Galactic Trade Federation site - I have scanned through it just now but I intend to return to it when I am more at my leisure.

I'm rather in a quandary about the releases coming this September, I have to say. My gut reaction is to boycott it (just like I have all the other DVD releases), but I can also see the point of view that others have put forward on this site - that it is, at least, an official Laserdisc transfer (and will certainly last longer than my poor little tapes...).

As far as DVD recorders go, certainly in the UK, it seems to me that you would have to step down the quality quite a bit to record the OOT from VHS from start to finish, am I right? Are there any dual layer recorders available yet?

I think it's time I upgraded my PC - presumably one could hook up a VHS recorder to a video card and transfer to DVD via appropriate software?

I'm not neglecting the good advice about the DVDs already available, by the way. I just would quite like to succeed in making my own DVDs, you know? Is that silly?

Many thanks for those links, russs15! I particularly enjoyed the scans of the covers, as I did have an early set - the very first VHS tapes I ever owned, given to me by my parents when we got our first VHS recorder. I now know that they were the 1988 fullscreen editions (CBS Fox 'All Time Greats').

Unfortunately, those tapes vanished one black day and were never recovered! They may have been stolen by some unscrupulous visitor to our home...

I replaced my loss with the 1991 widescreen editions, which I still have and are serving as my 'workhorse' tapes.

I also own the 1995 widescreen editions, which are with my parents and have hardly ever been played. These constitute my time capsule for the OOT.

Finally, I have the 1997 widescreen tapes in the silver box set. It didn't occur to me, until I read of your plans to commit the first "special editions" to DVD, that these versions are now, too, under threat, after the changes made for the latest DVD versions. Presumably Mr Lucas has determined these versions as being also not representative of his "artistic" "vision".

At the moment I find it difficult to justify the cost of a DVD recorder unit, therefore my plans to back-up my tapes are on hold. I am very interested in all of the variations between releases that you have discovered as you have been engaged on this venture. I will certainly be interested to follow your exploits...

I have several V/Vm CDs and one by Kid606 and one by Lesser. I also have some tracks on sampler CDs from 'The Wire' magazine. So, I guess, I have heard some stuff from V/Vm Test Records, Tigerbeat6, Ipecac and Matador.

I'm always interested in new things. I try to sample a little of all types of music from any point in history!

As for the sites you were talking about, I'm afraid I'm still very new to all this. This is the first forum site I've taken part in! Any suggestions are very welcome. What's this Butcher's Slab all about? Is it part of their site on Brainwashed?

A bunch of people from near Manchester, UK who like to put records through a mincing machine and release whatever comes out the other side.

As I say, they occupy a zone on the borders of scary/hilarious. Scary, like the reanimated corpse of the ballroom music from 'The Shining' rising out of a swamp of noise. Hilarious, like their take on 'Stay Another Day' by the British boy band East 17 - I defy anyone not to burst out laughing the first time they realise what what they're listening to used to be!

They made a record not so long back of all of Schostakovich's symphonies played simultaneously...

Zany!!

Hello!

Just to introduce myself, I’m newly signed up to originaltrilogy.com as of today. I’m posting to you from Darlington in County Durham, UK (North East England).

I saw a DVD magazine yesterday proclaiming the coming of OOT on DVD.

I found this site this morning.

By lunchtime my email was in LucasFilm’s inbox.

My parents are currently custodians of the secret plans… 3 VHS tapes of the OOT which have hardly ever been played. They were the last VHS releases in this country that I can recall. I have an even older set that I am playing to death.

I hope to transfer these tapes to DVD to stave off the inevitable degradation for a while. I had, of course, hoped I wouldn’t have to do that…
