Making our own 35mm preservation--my crazy proposal

Yep, pretty much. But instead of DVNR smearing, you'd have very messed-up color instead.

Are you sure of that?

My god, i can't believe the negativity here. It's only at a very early stage and people are saying how crap it's going to look. sure, it's never going to look as good as a studio professionally done transfer but what have we got at the moment? The blurred to hell GOUT. Even if this was done only at DVD res and there were still issues with colouring or other things it's still going to be miles better than what we have at the moment. And this is even going to have the audio track directly captured off the print.

Now those colour corrections were done really quickly, but it does show what can be achieved with this. I'd prefer to have a scratched, grainy transfer with slight colour issues over the GOUT any day

And here's a comparison with the GOUT (Gout on top)

Doctors not seeing kids withot vaccinations
Time

I've got to say i fully support the doctor here. All my kids were vaccinated. i think it is stupid for a parent not to vaccinate their children. It's become a "trend" here in the Uk not to vaccinate just because of the unfounded scaremongering about the links to autism. More and more kids are being diagnosed with autism, same as dislexia, all to easy. Doctors don't seem to find out anything about the child background and upbringing before making a diagnosis. My ex-sister-in-law has had all 3 of her children diagnosed with autism and dislexia but this is down to their upbringing and not anything medical. From the time they were able to walk they were chucked outside to "play" just so she could watch the TV in peace. Not once did she ever sit down and read to them or teach them how to read and write. they were feral kids and this showed in their behaviour. None of them could read or write anything by the time they went to school. As they got older when they came home they were never made to do their homework. It was only when she was being investigated by social services and was told by the benefits office that her children were old enough now that she had to go look for a job that she decided that there was something wrong with them and went to the doctors. Now she had been on the internet and researched about tell tale signed of various conditions so she could give a detailed description to the doctor and it worked. She now gets a disgusting amount of money off the social for their so called "disabilities" because she was able to screw the system.

Parents should take responsibility for their children. Not getting their children vaccinated not only could harm their own child, but someone else's that may not be old enough to have completed the vaccination stages too.

One thing that makes me sick with some parents now is that they will have "sickness parties". If one child gets chicken pox (yes i know this isn't part of the vaccinations unless its changed since my children were young), measles, mumps etc these parents will gather all their children together and have these so called parties in the hope that all their children will also get whichever illness the one child has so they can get it earlier in life, instead of getting any of the vaccinations. Now this has become acceptable without any regard for the safety of their children or anyone elses.

Doctors and hospitals here are refusing to treat people that smoke or are overweight, even though that doesn't affect anyone else apart from themselves, so why can't they refuse to treat children whose parents have refused to let their children have these vital vaccinations?

STAR WARS: EP V "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - 12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW
Time

Just a quickie because i'm in the process of installing my new motherboard then reinstalling everything.

The Hoth Trooper costumes are now awaiting pickup for shipping to the USA & the 2nd unit. Just thought i'd give you a peek at how they turned out. The vest needs to be stitched at the front because my machine can't cope with the thickness so is just pinned at the moment, but that is being completed at the other end.

3D STAR WARS for the masses...has ARRIVED!

If anyone's interested the 3D transfer mentioned above can be found by doing a BIN search for:

star wars ep4-3D.SBS.720p.jimbo69jones

Forget about the above search - it's passworded. Waste of download time :/

I wouldn't bother with it anyway. They have used XVID for this and isn't a very good encode. Not only that but the 3D is impossible to watch without feeling sick from a banging headache after the first few minutes. For some reason there are some very strange things going on with the left eye. The crawl is almost unreadable in 3D as its totally distorted.this causes hell with the 3D (just click on images to view full size)

Every time a shot ends in a scene you get 1 frame on the right side from the next shot because of the method used

The 3D version of EPV has the same problems too

Noise yes, grain no (my opinion). These shots you mentioned are "supposed" to be grainy by their nature, that's how they were in the original film, too.

Huh a lot of scenes look far grainier than I expected, especially the desert. I never knew that Star Wars was supposed to look that grainy. They must have really DVNR-ed it for the 2004 release.

If you notice, the shots posted that had a lot of grain were all shots that contained composited effects. this created heavier grain than in other shots because it is, in effect, layers upon layers of film. The desert scenes that contain heavy grain have all had the skies added. When they did the SE they digitally recomposited these shots which eliminated the heavy grain

ok could you be a bit more specific? like what i do with the par file to fix it - ive never edited these things before and i presume thats what you mean?

or alternatively if anyone could send me the link to the (PAL version): SWB_FINAL.part065.rar

that would be cool)

Edit: my login at fanedit.info still doesnt work so i cant contact anyone there for help - sorry.

Download and install a free program called quickpar. once installed click on one of the star wars begins par files (make sure that they are in the same directory as the rar files) It will now automatically scan the files . once the scan is complete just click repair (unless automatic repair is already ticked then it will do it automatically once the scan is complete)

I forgot to mention - I noticed the audio (the movie audio) went slightly out-of-sync in places. Did anyone else notice this or was it just me?

I only noticed it during the death star battle but i just thought it was because my player started it from its last position viewed. I've fixed those. Are there any other parts i should look out for?

For those interested, with jambe's permission, I am in the process of doing a NTSC conversion of Star wars begins. Now because i will be doing a proper NTSC conversion there will be some side effects. As Jambe used a PAL source for his edit i will be slowing down the audio to the original NTSC pitch. The only problem will be that some of the commentary voices that were originally pitched correctly and not PAL sped up will sound a little deeper, but the main movie itself will have the correct NTSC pitch. The only other way of doing it would have been to shrink the audio and keep the original PAL pitch but this would have caused more undesirable side effects.

It will be exactly the same as the official PAL version with the original menus and extras intact. I should be finished by sometime tomorrow and will be uploading it soon after to usenet only

D_J, could you encode the sample as a mkv to make the file size smaller? I'd definitely be interested in checking out the sample and give you feedback. I would say that the noise reduction could do with being turned down slightly (vaders helmet looks a bit smudged from the NR) but this could change when seen in motion anyway as you can never tell just from screenshots.

Dack Ralter, are you viewing these images on a calibrated monitor? The examples you have shown have the black levels almost identical to the matte bars. having checked the hd transfer of esb i boosted the gamma and the starfield background is the same black level as the matte bars. boosting the gout gamma however shows how red shifted the transfer actually is as the starfield blacks turns very red, but are brighter. But you have to remember that the gout is very washed out and blacks aren't at the level they would be with a decent transfer

Can I get that preset you mention? OH, and which version are you using or does it matter?

Sorry d_j, missed this post. Here is the preset:

Just stick it into your user presets folder. I'm using CS4, but it should still work in CS5, but not sure about earlier versions

That does look a lot better now. Don't rely too much on those technicolor pictures because the levels etc seem to vary quite a bit, which is natural if you are attempting to capture something off a cinema screen without correctly setting the white balance and exposure prior to doing this. The only way to truly know what the correct colours of star wars is would be have a professionally scanned copy of the movies, from different prints with nothing done to them and then make a comparison
