I don't think LF would be behind the disappearance of ANH:R on YouTube.  If that were the case, wouldn't they take down the various commercially available Episodes I-VI as well?

Lucasfilms had nothing to do with the disappearance of ANH:R disappearing from YouTube.  I took it down on my own freewill.  The first and last parts were blocked in a buttload of countries because of the main Star Wars theme.

I thought for sure that Lucasfilms owned the musical score to the films, but now I believe that is not the case.  The only way I could get around the videos being blocked is to either compose the music from scratch or alter the music pitch, and I don't want to mess with Adywan's fan-edit in anyway for whatever reason.

I am very sorry, everyone.

No need to be sorry. The way youtube is blocking so many videos now is just going to stop people from using it. I know that i will never be using it again and might even take all the videos from there completely. Thanks for letting us know G E Predator

Yeah I noticed that too! I went looking for it on YouTube to show my friend and couldn't find it. I hope that means Lucasfilm isn't bring down the ban hammer, because that would seriously suck. :(

Yeh, it is a bit worrying because there were 2 full versions and now both have gone at the same time

Hi, Frink and Ripplin. Yep, first time here on the OT board... :P

Now, as for my question...

Gaith said:

Hello everyone,

I recently acquired a copy of Ady's ANH-Purist from a confidential source (okay, maybe it was tehparadox), and while it of course looks wonderful, once I unpacked it with winRAR and extracted the main vob files with PowerISO, I found the video to be riddled with small but noticeable frame-jumps. Am I doing something wrong? Could there be errors in the paradox upload? Has anyone else experienced any issues with the Purist edit? I'm racking my brain trying to figure out the culprit here...

Thanks!  :)

... Any opinions? Anyone? :)

Haven't heard anyone having any problems with the purist. Do you get an ISO file when you unpack? If so then try mounting the image with Virtual clone drive, daemontools or something similar and try playing the movie from that. if it plays smoothly then PowerISO is causing the problem.

Are you burning it to DVD or watching the extracted VOB files on the PC?

STAR WARS: EP V &quot;REVISITED EDITION&quot;<strong>ADYWAN</strong> - <strong>12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW</strong>
Time

wow, this has turned from Star wars into format wars ;)

After a lot of consideration i think it will be best for me to release ESB:R as just 4 releases:

720p high bitrate mkv
PAL DVD-9
NTSC DVD-9
Special featured DVD-5 NTSC only

Now this way i won't be wasting a lot of time having to do multiple versions and then have the hassle of uploading such a high volume. The mkv can be played either on a computer or through a media player (which are now a lot more common and aren't expensive). Also if anyone wanted to burn it to a blu-ray then they can just use TSMuxer to convert it to a blu-ray format and this takes no time at all and loses no quality.

The DVD's will only be DVD-9 because they can easily be shrunk to fit on a DVD-5 using something like DVDShrink if someone wanted that, but with dual layer burners being commonplace now and discs being really cheap then i can't see why someone would want a DVD-5 nowadays anyway.

Then the special features disc will be NTSC only as it doesn't really matter about the smaller than PAL resolution and people can download it if they want to watch the features without having to download a 25gb blu-ray disc.

If people want to complain then quite frankly i'm not bothered. If they can't be bothered to put in a little effort to download these and shrink/convert if they wanted a specific format then i really can't see why i should be expected to.

Now i've done a bit of tweaking to the bacta tank and i've now got it to a colour that i'm happy with, without it looking recoloured. It's lso very reminiscent of the original Ralph Mcquarrie production paining:

What are your favorite OT documentaries?
Time

My favourite ones are the original making of's (making of star wars, SP-FX, Classic creatures & from star wars to jedi) and of course Jambe Davdar's Star wars docs trilogy.  I wasn't over keen on Empire of dreams. One thing i hate about these new style docs that seem to be the norm nowadays is all the useless chatter from people who had absolutely nothing to do with the movie, or ones that is just some talking heads with a few clips from the movie with no behind the scenes material at all.

STAR WARS: EP V &quot;REVISITED EDITION&quot;<strong>ADYWAN</strong> - <strong>12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW</strong>
Time

The main problem with so many different formats is, not only having to upload all of them but also  keeping them all available. If you think about it then this is the amount of different versions i would have to make:

Blu-Ray with special features
AVCHD with movie only
PAL DVD-9 with movie/menu only
NTSC DVD-9 with movie/menu only
PAL DVD-5 with movie/menu only
NTSC DVD-5 with movie/menu only
PAL Special features bonus disc
NTSC Special features bonus disc

Then people will complain that there isn't a 720p mkv then an XVID

I might not even do a Blu-Ray version yet. I won't know until i have finished the video and i start the encoding process. If i can fit the 720p onto a BD-9 without losing any quality then i will, if not then the next option would be a high bitrate mkv. I don't want to get flooded with emails like i have done in the past because their machine can't play the AVCHD, but they want the HD version. I just want to be able to get this edit finished and get it out there. then just walk away from it all for a while. I've been working on Revisited since 2006 without a break and it's started to take over my life, so i want a good long break away from anything  to do with editing before i start ROTJ:R

Adywan won't be changing the crawl. It's fine the way it is.

There is no way i would ever change the crawl for the OT. Now the prequels are a different matter. They are going to have to be changed because of the way the movies are going to be changed.

In empire when vader is in his meditation chamber and his helmet is being positioned in place you will notice a small glob of white glue at the top of the helmet that breaks free when the clamps release.

i will be fixing this

One other issue are the eyes of the tauntans in the special edition.....I wonder if it is possible to add more life to them.  Perhaps more blinking, and or movement.....they seem pretty lifeless at this point.

There isn't much that can be done with the eyes. I've done what i can but its really subtle. The head moves about so much in each shot its a nightmare to track the eyes to add anything to them

Unless I missed it here's something I don't recall seeing too much talk about. The menus....at what point does AdY begin that process? Is is something he'll be doing last?

Any word or details on what the menus may look like this time out?

I don't start the menus until everything is completed. that includes the video, audio and any special features. The menus will look similar to the ANH:R ones as i want to keep a theme throughout the Revisited saga

doubleofive said:

muddyknees2000 said:

there'll be twice the menu's too...as i heard he wants to do 2-disc sets from here on out (hopefully ANH:R:HD will be done the same way)
That's not necessarily true. AVCHDs to my knowledge don't have menus, therefore the 720p version wouldn't have a menu. I doubt he would spend too much time making a menu for the DVD version of the film, maybe scene selection and subtitles. I'm sure the Bonus disc will be as fancy as the main disc of ANHR1.

I may not be doing an AVCHD. I want to keep the bitrate quite high for the HD version so i will probably be looking at a blu-ray version instead. I've tested AVCHDs on a few Blu-Ray players and  there are still compatibility issues, especially with some sony and panasonic players. Plus this way i should be able to have all the same style menus and i would be able to have the special features on the same disc too as the BTS doc would have been filmed in HD.

Awesome work on these adywan!  It's good to know 'ol Rogue Leader and his gang are nearer to running around like madmen for the replacement footage you need.

I can't recall where I came across this shot below, but I'm interested to know where your 2nd unit have decided to actually film their footage.

Plans are still being drawn up for this due to the delays in getting the costumes over there.

That snow is blue...

Not in the original photograph it isn't you only have to look at that pic to see just how oversaturated it is. The saturation has been boosted so much that the troopers look like they've all spend a week in a tanning bed.

corellian77 said:

Just watched the video on Facebook... the colours look great Ady.  Just a quick question: have (had) you considered adding shadows below the snowspeeders in some of the shots?  I forget if this has been asked before (potentially even by me), but it seems like we should be seeing some shadows at some points given the apparent direction of the light and the speeders' proximity to the ground.

I'm not a great lover of adding fake shadows. It's soemthing that always sticks out like a sore thumb to me.  There is only a couple of shots where you would see a shadow anyway ( if you look at the ones with shadows the speeder is always pretty close to the ground before it casts a shadow) so i'll probably leave the shadows out.

Is it just me or does the lightsabre at 9.38 ignite 2 times accoring to the sound? That can't be right, can it?

It was always this way until the special edition came out, and as i'm using the theatrical audio for the temp track the mistake was there.

 This.

Also, at around 8:55 in the video, the shot of the empty cave (the pre-SE shot) brightly flickers at the bottom of the frame right before it cuts back to Luke hanging upside down. BTW, how did you manage to get a pre-SE shot that matches the HD quality of the rest of the footage?

 Looks great, Ady!

It's a shot that was taken from the GOUT and as it won't even feature in the final edit its isn't something i'm bothered about.

A quick question: is the bacta water/liquid supposed to be redder?  Not a biggie for me, but at least something to note:

Check out these 2 scenes on the youtube video: one at 16:20 and the other at 16:41.

The first scene has Luke inside the tube and it is clear for the most part (looks like there is a small red light in the bottom of the tank to light up the water).   The second scene where C3P0 speaks to Luke you can see the bacta tank behind C3P0 (on the right) and it is RED, and I mean solid red.  Is that the tank?  If so, is one or the other going to be changed so as to give it a more consistent color/look?

Another suggestion/idea.  Again, nothing big or necessary, but just putting it out there for thoughts: when the Taun-Taun falls down from the cold when Han finds Luke (at 13:50), the entire body falls in slow-motion due to the stop-motion aspect of the Taun-Taun model.  Would it be conceivable to speed up the 2nd half of the fall slightly to convey weight due to something that heavy falling (ie a gradual slight increase in falling speed, as the way it is now is continuous)?

The bacta tank has been slightly tinted red when Luke is in it. Colouring it any more and it just looks unnatural. The tank was always red, with the illumination coming from a red light underneath the tanks base. When they filmed the scene however they wanted the room to be illuminated by the tank so the added a strong light above the tank which unfortunately bleached out the red illumination.

I did try a few enhancements to the dying taun taun but the results made the creature look even more fake. In the end i just decided to stick with adding some motion blur and smoothing out the animation

An AT-AT? Wow. Ady, I don't want to discourage (not that it would mater)... but I sure hope you know what you're doing. I await December a little nervously.

lol. Don't get too worried about the AT-AT. it's only a model kit that i'm building and slightly modifying to make it more screen accurate. It's only going to be used to replace the badly composited AT-AT's & missing ones we see through the front of the speeder cockpit windows. It only took me a few hours to build and will take another couple of days to modify, so no biggie ;)

bleedspeed,s attitude
Time

@ ibleedspeed, you have to understand that no everyone here is a fan editor or has knowledge to offer the help that people request. Not only that but the ones that do are more than often busy working on their own edits and answering questions in their own threads and may not check the "technical questions" section very often. Sometimes it can be months before someone gets a reply,so a little patience would have been a good thing. You also have to think that not everyone will be using the programs that you use, so would have no knowledge on how to help you

If you want to get help then please try to write it out clearly. i just checked your previous thread to see what all the fuss was about and quite frankly i just couldn't read it and gave up half way through. It was almost impossible to understand what you were asking.

Your attitude also takes a lot to be desired. Winging that you hadn't received any help was only going to start a backlash towards you so i can't see why you were so surprised by it all. And then you just started acting like a child  and i think, judging by peoples reaction to your behaviour, that you have totally burned your bridges here and are highly unlikely to receive any help in the future. If you had just been a little more patient and not started your bitchfest then i would have been able to offer you the help you needed, but not after reading all this.

How do ypu know if I dont play any metal? lol.  As a matter of fact I do.

I agree that a great classical guitarist could not just pick up a guitar and do what vai or eddie van halen does. Each style is a discipline all it's own.

What I am saying is that if you take a guitar player and sit him down  there are certain styles that are much more difficult to master than others. Rock and BLues and yes metal is included in the rock genre  are the two easiest styles to master.

if the truth offends some of you  too bad cause I dont know what to tell you. Go wank some Root and 5ths.

the truth as you see it is not the same as the truth in the real world.Your last line just proved to me that you are indeed one of those "wankers" i was talking about .If you got your head out of your ass once in a while the fresh oxygen might enrich your brain ;)

I never claimed motley crue or whitesnake did and as a matter off act they are quite easy.  Difficult would be country lead or rockabilly or jazz and flamengo.

It is easy to hide behind a ton of distortion and  miss notes and pull off bends that  do not even hit the  exact note you are looking for.  you can  get CLOSE with rock and the blues  but with country lead  you have to be  prescice  because you are mimicking   a pedal steal which is done by mechanics...also   the spped at which they play leads   going through  clean channels and HYBRID picking on top of that..not  flat picking wanking like rock guitar..is just a  sheer testament to their skills.

Zack Wylde  said it best  "country lead players are from another planet" truth is they are not. they just put in the time to play like masters  and they dont hide behind distortion. they are truly the best of the best

haljordan28 said:

Yeah I bet it's easy to criticize a music genre when you obviously know absolutely nothing about it.

People like you make me laugh.

I know guitar  and I know what is difficult to play and what it not. If you think metal is then you clearly know jack shit about guitar playing.

what makes it hard?  Do tell?  Explain to us all what techniques are involved  in death metal guitar that  makes it the slightest bit challenging?

Laugh  at yourself.

Now it's this type of attitude that really pisses me off. You have a really high and mighty attitude that "your type of music" is better than all the rest and you look down on other who play a different style. I played guitar/bass/keyboards/drums for just under 20 years before my health forced me to never be able to play again. I'm a metal fan but i also listen to a very wide variety of music and also enjoyed to play the same variety. But it was the ones that classed looked down on others that really got on my nerves. The amount of times that i challenged these "great" guitarists to play metal/rock and they failed miserably always put a smile on my face. Now a few of these people i knew personally and  they worked as session musicians. they had worked with some very big names like Van Morrison, Joe Cocker, Eric Clapton, to name a few. Now my old band lost its guitarist a few weeks before we had an important gig so we asked one of the session musicians we knew if he could fill in because i had now turned away from the guitar for live work to concentrate more on being the vocalist. Now this guy isn't one of the ones that ever looked down on other music genres. We has seen him play many times and he was an amazing guitarist. His main styles were Country & Blues. Now we gave him a tape of the set a few weeks before the gig and he said he could learn it by just listening to it, which is the way he worked with a lot of people he played session guitar for. The night of the gig cam and you could see how much he was struggling to play our music. He freely admitted after that he didn't think before hand that this style of music would have been so hard to play and that he was wrong.

Now it was thanks to this person that, in the late 80's,  i had the amazing opportunity to have an after hours acoustic jam session in a local county pub with none other than Robert Plant and Eric Clapton. It went on until the early hours in the morning and was one of the highlights of my life. I really wish someone could have recorded it as this was something to show the grandkids.

Now in every genre of music you have the good, the bad and the great. To say that musicians in a certain genre are better than the rest is just plain music snobbery and i really have no time for these types.

Now i'm not a death metal fan by a long shot but to say that it's easy just proves to me that you haven't even bothered trying to play it. Now again there are a lot of death metal bands that just play the same old stuff with the more simple riffs and solos but there are also those that have very talented guitarists that go against the norm.  Now i really can't stand listening to this type of metal, but my daughter loves it. But every now and then i hear a guitarist that just catches my ear and i just can't help listening to the track.

So maybe you should laugh at yourself instead of dismissing others so quickly.

Making our own 35mm preservation--my crazy proposal

Bad news guys. this isn't going to happen. I received samples of a few reels and this is beyond any form of restoration. The print is just too badly damaged. You have to remember that this isn't a professionally done scan but is just a home made telecine. The print is so warped that there is no way to keep the movie in focus in the centre of the screen because of the warping and this creates a horrible pulsing effect. This can't be fixed with any software as its there in the transfer. It's so bad in places it looks like the whole screen is pumping in and out from the centre out causing a concave effect. There is also a chunk of the beginning missing from reel 2 and i don't know about any of the later reels. Reel 3 is completely unusable. seeing it in pictures is one thing, seeing it in motion is completely different

So that's it guys. ESB is a no go, and there isn't a copy of Jedi, and it looks like EPIV suffers with the same problems, if not worse
