I guess if there is one thing to add/note, I noticed that the ion cannon is firing as the transport ships are lifting off.  Should we see a glimpse of the blue ion beam behind them or after the bigger one starts to move to the right of the ion cannon (as its in mid-recoil from a shot)?  I'm guessing it's a mostly-finished shot?

You have to see the whole sequence to see what's actually happening. The Ion cannon is only powering up and getting into position as the transports leave

opinions on film restoration/preservation and how it applies to Star Wars - what do you think should/should not be allowed?
Time

I have to say that i can clearly remember seeing the matte boxes in the cinemas back in '77. Back then i knew nothing about special effects and the way they were done so we all thought that they were the ships shields. I remember they were more noticeable during the Falcons escape from the Death Star. I use to do a lot of drawings back when i was  kid and from '77  they were mainly Star Wars related. I actually drew the TIE fighters with these boxes around them many times because that's how i thought they were supposed to look.

As for the restoration i don't think they should use digital compositing for any of the effects shots. Everything should look as it did when the films were released. The effects in Star Wars were ground-breaking and this is part of cinematic history and thus should be preserved accurately. Generations should be able to see how these effects were achieved and how they attempted to overcome the limitations faced at this time ( transparent ships etc). Recomposing any effects using todays digital technology would not be a true preservation and i would be totally against it.

I hear it so many times from people who are new to the saga saying how amazed some of the effects look for a 1970's movie, but they are actually talking about some of the CG/ re-composited effects thanks to the Special editions. This is NOT what we should be allowing new generations to believe. Clean up the films - yes. digitally remove all the dirt and scratches - yes, because these faults were not part of the original movie but down to the passage of time/ useage. But change anything else like removing the matte boxes / matte lines - hell no.

I'm probably wrong, but "deleted, extended and alternate scenes" could mean "some replaced OT footage included", no? (They might pass as "alternate".)

(But if so, only in SD, of course. :) )

I think it has already been stated that the Alternate & deleted scenes would not feature any of the shots taken out from the originals for the Special editions

Both are CG shots.
Isn't the Star Destroyer the original model, with the rest as CG replacements?

Yes, only the smaller ships have been replaced in some shots. None of the stardestroyers have been changed from the models. This is why i think CG can work without looking like a computer game as long as the CG is combined with the mainly real world objects and not just a sea of CG

^ Newly composited Falcon?  Taken from existing footage or is that the Fine Molds Falcon you had purchased?

^ I love the detail in this shot -- it's cool seeing the troopers in the cockpit.  Again, wondering if this is from existing footage or the recently-constructed AT-AT model.

Both are CG shots.

A teeny observation, you used the sound effect of luke's saber igniting from the 2004 SE and from ROTJ. Please don't use that sound in the actual film, it doesn't really fit.

The sound effects used in the trailer are just stock effects and not an indication as to how it will sound in the movie

Isn't Vader in that hanger right after the falcon escapes?

No, there is more than one hangar entrance. When Leia is briefing the rebels she says " all troop carriers will assemble at the North Entrance. " and at the beginning of the movie when Han asks the rebel if Luke had checked in he replies "I haven't seen him. It's possible he came in through the south entrance". Now we can determine from this that there are at least 2 entrances, North & South, but as both of these lines are delivered when they are near the hangar entrance where the Falcon is parked, i would say there are more than 2 and that the base is quite large.

I'm just putting the finishing touches to a slightly extended trailer. It is based upon the "final" trailer, but all the shots have been swapped with the latest versions direct from ESB:R, with the final colouring and FX work ( for most shots) plus a few extra new ones. Once it's finished i'll post a link

Official Star Wars Facebook Page
Time

damn, i missed seeing whatever that was zombie cuz they have removed it now.

There are some really clueless people on that facebook page. There one guy, called Beaumont Miles, that i have had a run-in several times already who just wants everything changed to CG in the OT and likes to slam those who disagree with any CG addition or wants the OUT on Blu-Ray. now at first i thought this was some dumb kid that played too many comptuer games, but this guy is actually 40. For those who have facebook here's one of the run-ins:

I wonder what the original HD masters look like that came from Lowry before LFL started doing the mucking about.

Probably much the same as the 2004 versions, but without the changes to the '97 SE's as the colour correction destruction was done before they sent it out to Lowry. This is one reason i don't think the colars will be fixed because i can't see Lucas paying for another clean-up job when he thinks there is nothing wrong with the HD masters he has now.

Fair enough, well said, but I am not sure where I fit in your sides LOL, I actually like ALL films, I hate none of them, but I do prefer the UOT because that is what my best Friend and I snuck into to watch ALL day long LOL back in the day.

God, those were the days when you could sneak in to the first showing and stay in all day.  I remember doing that with the Star Wars/ ESB double bill and then again with ROTJ and finally with the ESB/ROTJ double bill. Every day for the 2 weeks they were showing them. A group of us would go and only 1 would buy a ticket then open the back door to let the rest of us in before the usherette would come in to sell the ice creams. never got caught :)

Thats why i think we need the emoticons back here. ;) just doesn't get noticed as easily as a little yellow ball winking.

I will be getting the Blu-Ray set for my edits, but luckily the release date falls in the month of my 10 year wedding anniversary, so i won't have to pay a penny for it ;)

The one thing that really pisses me off though is how the SE's and the PT have split the star wars fandom so much, thanks to Lucas' burial of the OUT. There was never this kind of hatred present within the fan base before all this happened, starting in 1997. You have the PT/ SE gushers on one side and the hard line OUT fans on the other, with the rest of us somewhere in the middle core, but still managing to battle between each other. It use to be fun being a Star Wars fan but now it's just so damn hard work.

I wish they had given a little more details about the technical aspect of the Blu-Rays.  With each film getting a 6.1 DTS audio track i guess that means every film will have a new mix. I'm really hoping that they take a leaf out of the Clone Wars tv series surround tracks and have the dialogue and FX in the centre channel without any music bleed through. This would be a fan editors wet dream ;)

OK, you have to be right, let's all just DAMN this whole release and dub it "Epic Fail" because of a damn picture, and box art, WOW, I stand corrected.

I better cancel my pre-order because of this proof, well I just saved $, unbelievable, that is all I can say.

My god man, lighten up. I was just messing about. I don't know what's happened to you lately d_j, but you seem to have gone to the dark side.

Jesus Fucking Christ, where is your damn PROOF of this Professor? 2004 was 2004, it is NOW 2011! Fact of the matter is, NO ONE knows any of this for absolute SURE, damn, some of you spew this shit over and over without any proof whatsoever, all I am saying is we will see in September whether the rants are true or not, I myself will wait until then to judge, or unless something concrete comes out before hand, jeez, you must have seen the print already to be this sure of your comments.

Well after they officially release a picture to promote one of the special features and make a monumental cock-up, you have to admit that it doesn't look too good for their quality control does it ;)

I love the fact that they have now deleted the picture since everyone slammed them for their mistake
