Ranking the Star Wars films

  • Rey immediately is an (untrained) formidable marks man hitting everything at a great distance while running away and shooting a stranger’s gun; Rey can even (incredibly) aim with the turret while she is piloting - Luke cannot, he is an average shot at best missing many shots;

Wrong. She attempts to fire the pistol at the Maz’s castle attack and forgets the safety is on. Then fires and misses before hitting the trooper and then runs away when the other troopers start firing. And Rey never fires the turret at any time in the movie. Finn is the one using the turret gun

  • Rey wants to stay home but only leaves for loyalty to her new friends and destiny - Luke wants to leave home, but stays out of weakness and loyalty (Owen/Beru);

Rey does not leave out of loyalty. The second they escape the planet, and throughout, she wants to return home but circumstances prevent this. It’s only later on in the film that she decides to stay.

  • Rey the scavenger is an incredible ace pilot: Without a copilot or any experience with the ship she masterfully pilots the bulky Falcon through an abandoned destroyer and graveyard under fire outmaneuvering trained combat pilots - Luke does not even understand how the cockpit of the MF works (“what’s that flashing?”);

And yet he was able to masterfully fly an X-wing, a ship that he had no experience with and had only ever flown a speeder in atmosphere, whereas Rey had said she had piloted ships, albeit only in atmosphere as well…

The term “Mary Sue” is a misogynistic term, no matter how much you want to pussy foot around it by saying its used for men too. Because it isn’t used anywhere near as often as it is towards a female character. . It was used against Rey for the sole fact that she was female by all those idiots that saw her as nothing more than the “Disney agenda” of giving females a strong role. Same crap was thrown at the main character of Rogue One. The second someone uses the term “Mary sue” invalidates any argument.

Oh yeah?
http://www.movie-locations.com/movies/s/Star-Wars-Revenge-Of-The-Sith.html#.WgtONRNSwnU

Using background plates does NOT make it a location or outdoor shoot. They shots every scene that was supposed to be outdoors IN A STUDIO, WITH STUDIO LIGHTING, instead of shooting it outside the studio using natural light. Which, in turn, makes everything look fake. They filmed the damn thing in Australia, where sunshine is readily available. So why use studio lighting when he could have easily have shot the stuff in natural light and make things look more natural? That’s not the craftmans fault, that is the Directors, especially a Director who has complete control over the film

The models look perfect as they are. They look as good today as they did back then. Something that can;t be said for the CG models in the prequels.

There are plenty of ships in the PT that were real physical models, you know.

https://geektyrant.com/news/photos-of-the-practical-effects-used-in-star-wars-prequel-trilogy

In fact, the PT had more sets and models than the entire OT. But they still had to use CGI because some things were impossible to make without it. And that’s not a bad thing.

Yawn…this old argument again.

Only TPM has physical models used for ships/ vehicles. For the other two they were purely CG.

And that “The prequels had more models built than the OT” defence falls flat on its face when you take into account that the OT used real locations, full scale sets or partial with matte paintings, instead of many sets & locations being built as miniatures and the actors filmed against greenscreen or the minimal amount of set piece. ROTS doesn’t have a single outdoor location shot in the entire movie. It was filmed entirely on a soundstage, which is why the outdoor scenes look incredibly fake.

I dare say you are more interested in ARSE than ROTJR I will send you a donation but I feel your are more interested in this which to be honest I can completely understand never the less ROTJR is something that absolutely has to happen.

Thanks Ronster. I’m not sure why you would think i’d be more interested in redoing soemthing i had already finished once over starting something fresh and exciting though.

Adywan are you updating things like the opening scene to make the ships move a bit faster and have the models look more modern things like that? Thanks man keep up the really good work.

The models look perfect as they are. They look as good today as they did back then. Something that can;t be said for the CG models in the prequels. The only thing that will be altered is ehat was done in the original ANH:R, like the tantive being hit, then fixing the misaligned stardestroyer flashes.

My thoughts on various changes

ZeeverFett said:

If Shaw is used, this is the only version Luke would recognize:

He would recognise him more than some mop haired kid that just appears. Just a couple of scars and no hair doesn’t make him unrecognisable at all. Information is not easily available under the oppression of a regime like the Empire. He couldn’t just look up information about his father. The Emperor would have suppressed all of that. If it was so easy for Luke to look up info on his father, then it wouldn’t have been too hard for him to discover that he became Vader.

Anakin appearing as his younger self is ridiculous. So, one of the most evil men in the galaxy can suddenly return to his youth, while the other two jedi have to remain their older selves? And the fan theories about how he returns to his form when he was last a good man is also ridiculous. Not only is he NOT a good man on the light side of the force when he looked like that, ( He had already begun on the path to the dark side, He had, after all, slaughtered a whole village of Tuskens, including the women and children, out of anger long before he looked like that), but that also completely destroys the whole redemption arc of ROTJ. Anakin turns back to the light side prior to his death. Him becoming a force ghost originally symbolised that. Before the rubbish that they had to learn it, which Anakin had no knowledge of, so couldn’t have become a force ghost. God, the prequels screwed so much up in the OT

I haven’t had time to go through every comment yet, but here are a few things that WON’T be happening in ROTJ:R -

Extra Boba Fett / Boba Surviving - Boba is going to die ( someone already guessed the one way i’m planning on killing him 😉 )

Revised Crawl - the crawl will be staying the same.

Moving the Dagobah scenes to the beginning of the movie - Where does Luke suddenly disappear to during the briefing? And why does Luke only react strangely towards Leia, that she senses, when he reappears at the briefing and not at all before that? It just doesn’t work moving it to the beginning. You lose, not only Luke’s first appearance, which works perfectly, but other moments that have to be cut to accommodate this.

Lightsaber building scene - see above comment for one reason why. Other reason is that the footage is terrible and the Vader lines are awful ( hacked & pieced together dialogue from the films and not the original recording)

Jerjerrod deleted scenes - No amount of restoration/ work done to that footage can ever make it usable to place alongside HD footage.

If Adywan is still interested in fixing errors there’s a small one that stood out to me. The rain sound effect on the exterior shot of Yoda’s hut sounded a bit loud and “robotic” to me, like it was played in a big metal box. I watched it in stereo, so it might be an issue that appears when the surround sound is downmixed into two channels. If the same rain sound is played in different channels but with a slight delay this might cause a strange robotic echo effect.

That bit wasn’t touched. It the same on the Blu-Ray

While it will be next year at least before i write up all the ideas i had for the PT, this is one thing that was worked on. It was to be included in the Complete Saga trailer i had planned, but when decided not to do the PT, it was scrapped and never properly finished, so is still in its very rough stages.

Wow, lots to go over in such a short space of time. I can’t reply to each and every one so i’ll just go through a few…

Personally, I’d like to see the SE “Victory Celebration” music kept intact instead of “Yub Nub.” Coming from a composer, the “Victory Celebration” feels more climactic and conclusive than “Yub Nub.” It simply sounds like a finale.

I hate the Victory Celebration music. It doesn’t fit with the style of music heard in the OT. If they were going to change it, then it should have been a mroe orchestral piece, not some new age hippy trippy pan pipe style music. And the “ya ya ya” vocal bits in it scream the end of TPM to me. Hated that music also. I was never keen on Yub Nub either but i still prefer it over the SE version. But chances are none of them will be in the ending of ROTJ:R, or at least not in their current form. The whole end celebration may only be featured in a short section, with a new ending. Not going to say any more until i do some tests to see if my ideas work though.

mfastx said:

One scene that is jarring for me is when Luke chops Vader’s arm off, he’s obviously just wearing an fake “stump”. Is there any way to shorten the limb so it looks a little more realistic?

Yeh, that’s going to be fixed.

DominicCobb said:

One question, if you’re adding female pilots to the battle, does that mean finally giving a female voice to the one already there? Also, are we to assume including deleted scenes are out of the equation?

Yes, a female voice will be reinstated for that pilot. The deleted scenes for ROTJ, for the most part, are very low quality. No amount of cleaning and upscaling could get those shots acceptable for a HD film. This includes all of the Jerjerrod scenes. The only ones that have really any chance of fitting in are the Falcon interior scenes.

oh_riginal said:

An idea I had a long time back was to have a long shot with no cuts showing the Falcon flying through the battle, shooting down Ties and such, while dodging fire from enemy ships. It would be similar in style to the intro scene of Anakin and Obi Wan entering the Coruscant battle in ROTS. This would be an epic way to showcase that Lando is a helluva pilot in his own right and that he knows that ship as well, if not better, than Han. It could end with a cut to Lando in the cockpit pointing out that the Star Destroyers aren’t firing.

i never liked the opening to ROTS. It’s just too long winded. The OT is more focused on short cuts, which work much better than overly long ones.

Holko said:

I’d start with the color-correction of the BluRay first, with small corrections like the lightsabers, shot flips, officer ranks ans continuity errors fixed, then release it. That way, we get a holdover, and we also have a common source to use when we get upset you removed beloved Ewok stunts, Victory Celebration or anything like that.

No, sorry, I’m not interested in releasing an unfinished version.

gazzatrek said:

  1. 'my main niggle with ROTJ (apart from the ‘slapstick’ Ewoks!) 'has always been Boba Fett’s ‘comedy death’… the whole thing just doesn’t feel like a good ‘end’ for such a popular and supposedly deadly character…(?)

Boba won’t be getting that ridiculous death.

INVAR said:

One suggestion is that since Dave Filoni confirms that Captain Rex is the White bearded old rebel guy at the bunker, I wonder if there is a way to get an audio comm announcement in the rebel hangar bay for him to report to the shuttle ala the line in Rogue One for General Sendulla? A little fanboy service, yes… but fitting.

As to a ‘perfect’ Falcon model - have you seen this Perfect Grade baby from Bandai?

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073ZRGX6T/

1/72 scale which puts it slightly bigger than the less-than -perfect Fine Molds one.

There have been some great modelers who tricked out the Hasbro Hero Falcon with a lot of aftermarket parts, but the time to do that right is a 6-month to a full year project.

Not keen on the whole “Rex on Endor” thing. It’s something i won’t be hinting at in ROTJ:R

The “Perfect Grade” falcon is the same scale as the fine molds. I need to go 1/48 at least for this edit. Plus that’s the ANH version anyway. As for how long the modification to the Hasbro would take, i can leave the hangar shots until later so i have no problem with how long the models for this will take. I estimate late next year. Plenty of things to do in the mean time.

ChainsawAsh said:

I guess one big question we should ask Ady before making a bunch of radical suggestions is:

Do you intend for ROTJ:R to be like ANH:R and ESB:R, in that it’ll be the “Special Edition that should have been,” or do you intend to make more dramatic editing decisions this time around?

There will be a lot more editorial changes with this one than the other two.

Ewoks … They are absolutely ridiculous and only exist to appeal kids and to sell toys.

Wrong. It’s an urban legend. Absolutely nothing to do with kids and toys.
They only exist because Chewbacca got a main role, therefore they could not be Wookies anymore, as they were in early drafts.
Since it is impossible to replace Ewoks with Wookies, getting rid of Ewoks is getting rid of Star Wars, as they were always part of it, from the very first draft.

Wrong, not an urban legend at all. Although it’s true that about the reasons why they weren’t wookiees, the fact about their design remains true that their design was deliberately altered to make them look like Teddy Bears. Their original design was more vicious, but george wanted to sell toys (where the real money is made). Originally they didn;t even have the head-dress, so looked exactly like Teddy bears. The head dress was only added during production because they had to cut a hole in the back of the head for cooling purposes. He also refused to have Han killed off because “no one wants to buy a toy of a dead character”

Jani-wan said:

There is nothing plausible in TFA. That is a mess.

I do not trust Disney anymore. First they made a terribly bad, than a mediocre movie, so they are 0 for 2 right now. Im afraid a cool Disney Star Wars movie is unrealistic expectation at this point.

Why anyone cares about ‘Canon’? It is a Disney business move to make more money, and has nothing to do with what Star Wars is or should be.

Please can you keep this Disney bashing crap out of this thread. It plagues too many thread now by the usual suspects and i don;t want it infecting this one too. Plus the canon thing was a Lucas marketing tool to make money, in place LONG before the Disney buy out. Personally i’m loving the new Star Wars films so far. Heads and tales above the crap PT.

Editroid said:

Here’s my list of suggestions:

  1. Maybe one less use of “my master” during the scene when Vader tells Palpatine about Luke being on Endor. To me, it sounds a little repetitive to hear him say that for two sentences in a row.
  2. Either shorten or remove the scene with the scout troopers chasing the Ewok on speeder bikes.
  3. Reanimate Palpatine’s Force lightning, and don’t give it as much of a glow.
  4. When Luke takes Vader’s mask off, make the top of Anakin’s head less egg-shaped, but keep his blue eyes and leave the eyebrows off as shown in the official 2004 DVD onwards.

2 - that is going to be shortened
3 - Why? Nothing wrong with the glow.
4 - planning on doing something about the egg head if possible.

Editroid said:

The Prequel Trilogy is here to stay as a permanent part of the Star Wars canon whether you like them or not.

Well they’re no longer part of the Revisited saga, so… 😉

Editroid said:

I wonder when Adywan will look at all of these suggestions and tell us what he thinks?

i can’t believe i have to address this thing once again. I asked you nicely before and yet you are doing it AGAIN. Why do i have to reply to things instantaneously for you? And then, when i don’t immediately reply, you send me constant messages on facebook, comment here, email me, all in a very short space of time. And emailing me to say nothing more than “A lot of people have been proposing suggestions for ROTJ Revisited on OT.com. I suggest you look at them and post your thoughts” will only go to get you ignored. How dare you demand that i reply, especially to a thread that i only started 3 damn days ago. A lot has been posted , yes, but it takes time to read through and reply and i keep my weekends mainly for myself and family and away from matters of the edit. Please stop it.

Ady, there’s some funky low-frequency color noise in the background of the shot at 00:24:35.
I noticed it when watching on my projector and it was a lot more visible there than it is now on my monitor but it’s still there and it took me right out of the movie.
The artifacts are likely to have already been there in the BD but they were brought out when you added a more yellow glow from the sun.
A simple low-frequency denoise pass should solve it nicely without affecting the overall detail. I have some great tools for this, so if you send me an uncompressed version of that shot, I’d be happy to give it a go for you 😃

Thanks Harmy. Checked the project file and there was an extra layer that was enabled at low opacity. re-rendered that and it seems fine now. And the clouds you mentioned, it is HD footage but seems that changing the colour brought out this effect. I’ve done what you said and added a slight blur. Thanks again 😃
