STAR WARS: EP VI -RETURN OF THE JEDI "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - ** PRODUCTION HAS NOW RESTARTED **
Time

ROTJ: REVISITED – PRODUCTION BEGINS & DONATION DRIVE

After a very short break (well, almost) from completing ESB:R, I will now be starting work on ROTJ:R . Although the full list of fixes and changes will still take time to compile, here are some of the things I have planned so far :- ( A full list will be updated in this post at a later date)

Add more B-Wings/ Pilots to Endor Space battle
Replace the lower quality matte painting with miniatures/ digitally enhanced versions
Remove the slapstick Ewok moments during the battle.
Add more rebel troop action to Endor ground battle
Remove the 2011 addition of Vader saying “No” during the climactic scene.
Remove “Jedi Rocks” and the additions of the Special Edition in that scene
Remove the Sarlaac SE beak
Add female pilots
Replace the Tydirium shuttle with a more cargo based shuttle (new design)
Re-rotoscope the lightsabers
Larger ground and space battle
New super-stardestroyer destruction.
Complete new colour grade
Remove Jabba’s “giant palace gate” added for the Blu-Ray and return it to the original version
Remove the new Ewok eyes
Remove Chewie’s Tarzan yell
Sebastian Shaw restored as Anakin for the ghost scene
Remove all of the Special Edition planet celebrations
Fix the “Force kick” shot where its obvious Luke’s kick misses by miles on the skiff
reorganise the space battle and fix the problems with call signs being given for the wrong pilots
New Boba Fett death
Remove many of C-3P0’s “Ric Olie/ captain obvious” lines
Maybe alter some of R2’s new beeps in which he sounds nothing like he does in the rest of the saga
Remove cartoonish vocalisation during droid torture in Jabba’s Palace
Fix Leia’s “I’m here” line in Jabba’s palace, which is pitched way too high and sounds nothing like her
Try to fix the ridiculous way Vader falls against the rail during the saber duel
Fix the error of the saber blade coming from the bottom of the saber when Vader throws it at Luke
Fix the badly tracked & the wrong focus stars seen out of the throne room window
Remove the added Dug walking around when everyone else is asleep in Jabba’s palace
Restore R2’s appendages, when he gets shot on Endor, becak to its pre-Blu-ray state ( no badly done CG bits)
Stabilise the shaky composited speeder bikes during the chase
Fix the error of the Imperial officer begin to fall back over the railing before the object that Han throws actually hits him
Fix Boba Fett flipped shots in the palace
Add Han’s arm restraints that were seen in ESB, but missing in ROTJ during the thawing process

And more…

Thanks to all the things I learned doing ESB:R, with the miniatures etc., I now know what can and can’t be done, so things can now move faster.

The first part of the production will be the live action shoots. This includes the B-Wing pilots and the Endor ground action. While we’re pretty much covered for costumes for the California shoot for Endor (apart from some props) , the B-wing pilots costumes and Cockpits need to be made from scratch. This will include 4 costumes and the same number of helmets and 1 full size cockpit, with interchangeable parts that can swapped around so that it doesn’t look like the same set used for all 4 pilots. Auditions for the needed pilots will be opening up shortly, but more on that once the time comes. Although there are costumers already out there with B-wing costumes that people have made themselves, It would be impossible to utilise what’s already out there because I need to have them identical and also because It would be a logistical nightmare to find people close to where I live that have the costume and can also act. So the only course of action is to create them myself. Another thing is the helmets. The original B-wing helmets are probably the worse helmet in the entire series. They’re not even helmets, just ear muffs. So these are getting a tweak. And, as we don;'t see the original helmets close up in the film anyway, redesigning them is no problem.

There are also a few props that will need to be made for the Endor shoot and ship them to California.

The second part will be the Miniatures. The main Matte paintings being replaced are the Home One Hangar scenes. The paintings just don’t hold up well and the scenes with Lando and Han have never looked any good. So a 1/48 scale miniature is being created for these shots. Luckily there are some X-wing, Y-wing and B-wing kits available in that scale, but the A-wings will need to be made from scratch by the looks of things. For the Falcon I will be using the 1/48 scale Hasbro hero play-set. That thing is a great little toy. Very close to the 32” inch studio model in terms of size, but perfect to be in scale with the other ships for the miniature. We will be 3D printing parts and scratch building other bits to kit out this Falcon to make it fit for filming. People that have already modified this toy know just how amazing this can look.

Now the shuttle Tydirium is going to be changed. One thing that has always bugged me is that the same model ship that is used for dignitaries, is also being used to transport cargo and troops. This ship needs to be a different model. More in line with a cargo shuttle, similar to what was seen in Rogue One and the troop transport in the SE ANH. So a 1/48 scale ship needs to be built and then it’s digital double for the flying scenes.

Now this unfortunately isn’t going to be cheap, so I really need your help. There will be some items that was used for ESB:R coming up for sale soon (Hangar set pieces, model ships etc.) , but this will only cover a small percentage of what is needed to accomplish this. (The Blueprints book posted earlier on the page is our 3rd unity directors own personally purchased copy that was used for reference until I managed to pick up a copy myself, so the funds he raises from the sale of that won’t be going towards Revisited as there may only be need to the first and second units this time around). While I have a small amount of materials left over from ESB:R, I don;t have anywhere near enough to be able to start.

The things I will need the funds for will include:

Lot’s of silicone and various resins, wood, electrics for the cockpit, material for costumes, vaccum-formed helmet goggles, fibreglass, set dressings, lots of various styrene sheets and pieces etc. etc. Now every penny raised goes into the cost of the materials. None of it ever goes to anything other than this. Everything ranging from travel expenses to the added cost of electric bills etc. comes out of our own pockets. We do not take a penny of donations for personal use or for anything outside of the cost of materials. Never have, never will.

So the ROTJ Donation Drive is now officially open…

If you can donate then you can donate through Paypal. You can visit the wordpress site and follow the links on the right of the page to the paypal donations page from there :

https://swrevisited.wordpress.com/

So it all starts now. On Force Friday…

ROTJ:R & ANH:R HD are now in production. Let’s hope this time things go more smoothly…

And now onto the last thing…

This will be my last edit. It’s obvious to me now that it is likely not possible to do all of the things I wanted to do to the prequels. Not without a huge budget. I don;t have the funds myself to do these projects, and I don’t want to keep having to rely on the generosity of others. I also just don’t have the love for those films, that I have with the OT, for me to spend years working on. So the Revisited saga will be episodes 4-6. These edits take up so much of my life as it is. To end up working on 3 more after this one (and recreating ANH in HD too) would take me another decade at least. It’s time for me to know when to stop. And that time is as soon as ROTJ:R & ANH:R HD are complete and all formats released.

EDIT: Work won’t fully begin until ANH:RHD has been completed

Kennedy worse than Lucas.

What good has Kathleen Kennedy done for this franchise? All she did was exploit fans’ nostalgia for the OT, while at the same time doubling down on not releasing them. Common sense should have left SW alone. Bit where are we now? Kennedy has given us a loose remake and a fanservice-heavy spinoff. It’s apparent she’s stifling any creativity by firing directors and keeping on hacks only because they make money. Of the next four films coming up, only TLJ would come close to not being some reference-heavy glorified fan film (I’m not buying into the hype). At least with Lucas you got fascinating failures instead of marvel-lite like today’s Star Wars movies. By the time the Obi-wan movie comes out this franchise will have TEN mediocre installments in it!

Stifling creativity? So far only the Han Solo films directors have been fired and that’s because they were turning the film into something completely different than they were hired to do. None of the other directors were fired. The so called “Gareth Edwards had nothing to do with the reshoots” articles were bull. The proof is there in the final film that he was still there. One of the final scenes to be filmed for the film was the vader attack/ Tantive IV escape. Originally there was no battle, it just escaped as Vader’s stardestroyer obliterated the Mon Calmiari ship. So, if Gareth was replaced, as the articles suggested ( all from a supposed on set report of another director in charge, when it was nothing more than the same thing that happened during star wars when Gary Kurtz ended up directing a lot of the scenes due to time constraints), then how was here the one who pulled the lever to release the Tantive? Also Edwards wanted to kill off all the characters but originally shot the film with a completely different ending where most survived because he never thought that they would allow him to kill them all off. But they did and gave the go ahead for extensive reshoots ( plus because the original tower was not part of the main building and, when viewing the cut, realised that combining the two buildings was a better idea as the final battle was going on way too long).

To say that Kennedy is stifling any creativity is just not true. If that were the case then there is no way she would have given the go ahead for the R1 reshoots. If that were George he would have just said it could be “fixed in editing”. Here’s what Edwards said about the final scene:

““He arrives and obliterates the Calamari ship, and then the blockade runner gets out just in time and he pursues the blockade runner. And then Jabez was like, ‘I think we need to get Darth on that ship,’ and I thought, yeah, that’s a brilliant idea and would love to do it, but there’s no way they’re going to let us do it. It’s a big number and we had, what, like 3 or 4 months before release. Kathy [Kennedy] came in and Jabez thought, f*ck it, and pitched her this idea, and she loved it. Suddenly within a week or two we were at Pinewood shooting that scene.””

If that is stifling creativity then i wish more studio bosses would do it. And if you are accusing her of this just because of the firing of the Han Solo film directors then that is NOT stifling creativity. That is protecting a well known character along with the studios investment. By all accounts they were turning him into a joke. instead of injecting the Star Wars type humour, that was sorely lacking from the prequels, they were turning it into a full blown buddy comedy movie. Or would you have preferred that han Solo be turned into a complete joke? George almost did that with Return of the Jedi.

As for not releasing the OT, then i didn’t know you had seen the sale contact between Lucas and Disney. You haven’t? Oh, well then, how do you know that part of the contract was that they had to agree that they could not alter his films in any way, including reverting them back to their pre SE state? That they had to remain as they are in this final versions? At least until after his death? Truth is, none of us know.

I never heard of anyone having a problem knowing who the Emperor was talking about in all the years prior to the change. The SE additions are just pointless exposition. There is just no need for it.

benduwan, that website you posted those pictures to is horrendous. They’re so small i can even see most of them. But a couple of thing you seem to point out as mistakes aren’t. Like the X-wing engines for one. I have said already that the engines will be their proper colour when i get around to redoing ANH and the Tantive IV engines are an orange colour and not red.

I think i need to clarify something i said though. When i asked for people to point out any mistakes they see in the video, i meant FX errors ( caused by something i have done) , spelling etc, not continuity errors that may or may not still be there. I’m not interested in those. I’ve done all the ones i wanted to or could do.

every time i think i’m going to be able to take this break, i get sucked right back in again. 😉 But that’s it now. Messages and comments will be replied to after the end of this month. I’m taking this last week or so of August off.

So on the Blu-ray release, one of the better changes (in my opinion) was that George Lucas went back and adjusted the line so that Palpatine says, “The son of Anakin Skywalker must not become a Jedi.” Makes this make so much more sense.

Adywan changed the line back to the original — why? I actually preferred the version on the Blu-ray release, and I think new viewers to The Empire Strikes Back would appreciate it as well. It is a confusing line.

I changed nothing there. He still says “The son of Skywalker must not become a Jedi” on the Blu-Ray release

Why does he say “ok we’re going, we’re going” in reaction to something that simply is not there?

I had always assumed R2 was anxious because the base was being overrun by the empire & they appear to be among the last to be leaving.
Everyone else around them do look pretty calm though as they’re packing their bags, perhaps it’s a different exit from the base that’s behind them 😃

Cheers, Paul

Yeah you can look at it that way and I will also accept it’s very feasible but R2-D2 is worried I got the quote wrong “Don’t worry… We’re going we’re going” and it does work but you know it just leaves you wondering when you know some facts and ROTJ does not really leave you wondering at all. it’s all pretty self explanatory no mystery.

ESB is for the most part pretty well un-open to interpretation and totally explained but when you delve a bit deeper you just wonder on a few things and I think this is one of them and probably the insert don’t help. Just saying it feels like it should be in reaction to “Something” and although all that has passed is not all good it does often feel like stuff is not quite right or something missing. “Who knows” is the real answer and that would be the people that were making it including Lucus.

This was never a mystery to me, not even as a child. It’s always been pretty clear that he is responding to R2’s anxious warblings. It’s like when you’re nagging your wife that she’s going to make you late for a dinner party and she responds with some annoyance as she puts on her last earring,“Don’t worry, dear, we’re going, we’re going.” I don’t need to ask Mucus (sic) for clarification.

100% agreed and I feel the same way, but when you know something was filmed afterwards it leaves you wondering and there is nothing immediate to worry about. I just wonder if their was more to worry about, I hope you get that it’s not like this film ran out of money or anything like that… Sorry but it did run out of money…

The didn’t take the full scale X-wing with them to Finse. All that was taken was a partial nose cone of the X-wing. It’s not something that was just filmed after to alter or fill something. It was just logistically unfeasible to shoot the full scene on location. So they filmed Luke and the pilots at Finse and then the shots of Luke getting into the full size X-wing later.

Now i’m going back to my supposed 2 weeks off the net…

One minor mistake in the end credits.
You forgot to include “Lighting Equipment and Crew from LEE ELECTRIC.”

Crap. Just checked the original psd file and i had that layer disabled. Thanks for spotting that.

The things in the credits and the two shots with the strange masks that have been pointed out so far have been fixed . If any other mistakes are spotted, then please let me know

Is anyone noticing some odd overlaid imagery at 1:45:17? It looks like a mask transparency was left visible during the scene. Is this just me?

I’ve just checked, and you are right. Strange thing is, when checking in the after effects project file, there is no mask that could be causing that. It has me baffled.

Amazing work, Adywan! I never expected any less. Worth the wait!!! I don’t have any complaints other than that my name is spelled wrong in the credits, but it’s not a big deal.

Ooops, sorry. 😦

I believe Ben Burtt’s name was misspelled in the end credits as “Benn Burtt.”

These errors will be fixed for the Blu-Ray.

Why did you keep “A News Corporation Company” in the 20th Century Fox logo? The current logo, as of 2013, doesn’t have it anymore.

Because i wanted to. 😉

I’m glad you guys are enjoying it 😃

Fine. I will.

Forgive me if this has been answered before, but I’m guessing it’s a different Editroid that made all those Star Wars preservations many years ago. It HAS to be!

That was EditDroid

Well there’s been a list for around ten years or so.

I also explained it in the facebook post that contained the links, which he must have seen to have downloaded it from those links
