Looks a lot better now Tellan. How is the rest of the edit coming along? Any closer to a release date?

What dual core system are you running now? Is it a core2 duo or an AMD X2 one? I'm thinking of upgrading mine soon but still unsure what chipset to go with. I was thinking of going back to AMD but the benchmark i have seen indicates that the Core2 duo are a lot faster when video rendering, but cost hell of a lot more, especially for a decent motherboard for the intel option.

Or possibly some kind of 'rewind' effect?

I say go in the direction of what JD has done.

I think the Maul/ Grievous idea could be pulled off by adding a couple of small scenes at the end of EP1. after the scene where Palpatine arrives there could be a small shot of a droid hovering over the pit where Maul fell and you see it go down or better still you see it emerging from the pit with the body of Maul, then cut to the obi-wan/yoda scene. Of course the droid would probably have to be built by some 3D wizard or maybe use an existing background droid to pull this off. then you could have a scene after where you see the body of Maul on the operating table, it would probably have to be in Palpatines ship though. It could mirror the Vader creation scene but be more extreme as there wouldn't be much of Maul surviving as Grievous. Of course there would have to be dialogue changes in EP3 and the stupid accent would have to go, but because his face is hidden beneath the mask there would be no problem with dubbing his lines. with Maul splitting in two as he falls down the shaft this can set up the reason why not much of him survives as Grievous.

I never really liked the whole "taught by Dooku" reason why Grievous would use a lightsaber. Why would Dooku bother training someone who has no ability to use the force. Surely he would have recruited someone who could.

Also the part where Grievous reveals his true identity to Obi-Wan could be just as the lightsaber fight end and obi-wan does the force push. if you look at that scene Obi-Wan looks suddenly angry as he does the force push so that would fit in perfectly.

The only problem that arises from this, however, is the whole name issue. why would he be called Darth Maul in EP1 then General Grievous in Ep3? I think he is only mentioned by name once in EP1 so to help get around this the line where his name is mentioned could be changed, then there would be no problem with his name in EP3, but getting around the whole "General" part could be more tricky

A fanedit concept: Star Wars movies as a TV series? (* unfinished project *)
Time
This looks like a pretty cool project.

Instead of having the opening crawl for every episode how about having an opening title credit sequence? That would make it feel more like a TV series than an opening crawl and give this project a really unique feel to it. That way you wouldn't have to have every episode start with a space shot.

The one program that i know can do this is Sony DVD architect. I use the professional bundle with Vegas 7 and its great but it is a bit pricey. There is the home software though, which is considerably less ( about $49). the features actually seem to be the same as the full bundle so this might be what you are looking for. They have a trial version online so you can try it out first to see if its what you are looking for.

Hope this helps.

Oh, I meant uncompressed AVI.

Uncompressed can run to over 400gb, better to use a lossless codec like lagarith. That will give you a file size of about 60gb with no loss of quality

Thanks for the links InvaderTim & Sojourn. I checked out the stock footage but unfortunately they have filmed the explosions at normal framerate and not used high speed cameras. They have used a slow motion technique in their footage that you have to pay to download which doesn't look as natural as using a high speed camera and suffers from frame mix blur. If they had used a high speed camera then they would have been perfect.

As for Star Trek stuff, are you just looking for Starship explosions in general or something specific? I have all of the Star Trek DVDs and could probably help you narrow the search a little bit.

i have found a couple of explosions from Enterprise which are perfect but i still need a lot more. I'm mainly looking for any sort of explosions in space, the bigger the better.

Big issue with Vegas 5.0 - please help!

I was using Vegas 6 when i began my edit and i use the lagarith codec without any problems.

Yeh, i thought you might be working with MPEG2. Vegas is ok when you are working with just a couple of edits using mpeg2 but i had hell if i tried to do anything extensive then it really started playing up, the same way you mentioned. I can't remember is 5d fixed this problem though. I think you mentioned that you are working from the NTSC DVD. The problem with Vegas that it sometimes fails to remove the 2:3 pulldown correctly and can cause loads of problems. There is a way around this but you do need a lot of hard drive space. Open up the dvd files in DVD2AVI. in the "Video" tab select the field operation as "forced film", then the colour space to "RGB24", then "clip & resize"
- set the filter type to " precise bicubic" and the "video aspect" to "free" and slide the resize slider to max to show 720 x 480. now you can export your video. using something like picvideo mjpeg codec the file size will be about 30gb but could be smaller for ntsc. Now you have your 24fps film but it is split into 2gb chunks. Its a pain that this program does this. Now you can load your first chunk into Virtualdub. once you ahve done that select "append segment", select all the other chunks and import them. now you can export. just select "no audio" in the audio tab and "direct stream copy" in the video tab and export. now your video is joined so you can delete all the split chunk files.

Now open vegas and import your project. once this has done go to the project media manager. right click on your main video file in the media manager and select "replace" and swap it for you avi footage. now save the project under a different name so you still have a back up of the original mpeg2 version incase somethings gone wrong.
Now there is one thing that vegas does that is annoying. with some avi and other files it adds them as field based footage even if it is progressive. so right click on the footage in your timeline and select properties. change the field order to "progressive". check each section of video on your timeline to see if it has changed them all to progressive.

hopefully 5d will fix the problem for you so you don't have to go through all that. But to be safe for any future edits convert the mpeg2 to lossless avi first

Big issue with Vegas 5.0 - please help!

Which version of 5.0 are you using? I had similar problems when using using Vegas 5.0c. There was an update to 5.0d available freely on the Vegas site that fixed a few bugs like this. I'm using 7.0 now because even with the updates 5.0 had too many problems (and so did the first few versions of 6). v7 is a lot more stable and you can still import the project files from 5.0.

Also what codec are you using for the basis of your edit? I know it plays up sometimes with a few of the lossless codecs and doesn't like Mpeg2 much either.

Well i'm pretty busy at the moment. I'm looking through my DVD collection to try and find some better explosions to use for the FX because some are so bleached they look really dated. I've narrowed it down to Episodes of Star Trek TNG, Voyager, Deep Space 9, Enterprise, Stargate SG1, Stargate Atlantis and a few movies. Problem now is that's added up to about 150 discs with most having about 3 - 4 episodes on each to check through. I've got my work cut out for me but its something i have to do, so i will probably be a bit quieter on here for a while.

Wish me luck.

Well i was going to say something but at first i thought you were joking? Why use the GOUT with all its flaws when you would be better off using the 2004 DVDs?. All you need to so is apply some form of colour correction and you have a much higher quality source to use as a base. If you are serious about doing an edit like this then you will have to learn a lot of fx techniques to do it and once you have learned those then removing any SE element will be easier, and much better looking, than using the GOUT. For one the GOUT isn't anamorphic and has horrible vertical jaggies and a lot of other horrible issues that, if you use this for your edit, you will have put a lot of time an effort to produce something that will be sub-DVD quality, and and FX work that you will be adding will jump out because of the difference in picture quality (and in the end it will cause you much more work to do to try and blend the FX work into the GOUT picture).

You say that you are going to make the creatures in Jabbas Palace blink and have facial movements? Well this is one main reason to forget the GOUT because you need a much higher resolution & clarity source to be able to pull this off. Also you say that you are keeping the Sarlac beak in. Then you can't use the GOUT for that. And adding in sections where the beak is present will stick out like a sore thumb.

I say use the 2004 DVDs. even with all the colour correcting and de-SEing you will save a lot of time and effort and it will produce a much higher quality result.

I would say yes to colour correction.

Don't let your lack of FX knowledge stop you. I knew absolutely nothing before i started my edit. Try and get Adobe After Effects for your FX work. It pretty easy to use and can do almost anything you'll need, once you get use to it. Just do a lot of experimentation to achieve your goal.

Well i found it interesting. It was great to see the old news footage that i remembered seeing as a child. I wouldn't pay more than a few quid for it though ( i just seen it on ebay going for over £10 although you can get it new for about £3). It does get repetitive at times and having no behind the scenes footage was a tiny bit disappointing, but i enjoyed it. I would say if you can get it cheap then if you don't like it you haven't wasted much money.

Jambe, i picked up an interesting DVD at a car boot sale today. It's caled "the unauthorised star wars story". Its an hour long documentary and features interviews with the cast as well as george and some others involved in the saga including interviews with garrick hagon ( they make a cock up and call him biggs starglider though). It doesn't have any behind the scenes footage or any star wars footage but has a few interesting bits like the UK '77 star wars lines from news reports and footage of some of the tunisian locations. It seems to concantrate more on ANH than the other movies but most of the interviews i have never seen before.
I went into HMV and they said they had never heard of it Although i looked later on the net and found some info about it from amazon.com). Would this be of any interest to you or do you already have a copy of it? It does seem that its still available to buy but not from many places so you may be able to pick yourself up a copy for about £4 ( i only paid 25p today though.lol)

Baby Hum, I'm not sure if you already have this or not but There was a Two Ronnies Star Wars musical sketch aired on one of their shows in the 1980's. It was aired again last week on sky and i luckily managed to record it. Would this be of use to you for a special feature on one of you releases? If it is i will upload it for you. Its PAL 4:3 and brilliant quality and about 5 minutes long
