Return of the Jedi Remixer Boss Edition (* unfinished project *)

Ok, where do i start.

Firstly using that crawl generator really isn't the way to go for this. I can't quite put my finger on what doesn't sit right with me but it does kind of make the crawl look like an old video game sequence. Secondly this program is going to cause a little problem for you. Once the crawl has finished how are you going to pan down and have the starfields match up? I'm not familiar with the crawl generator program but , if this is what you are going to use, then it would make life a lot easier for you if you could render the crawl without the starfield. You could add the starfield in later with one that would help you match the pan down.

And now on to the wording of the crawl.....

The crawl is there to give a slight backstory to what has been happening and then the last paragraph leads directly into the film. The way your crawl is worded you would have to begin the film where Luke enters jabbas palace, cutting out a huge chunk of the movie.

I seriously think you should go back and rethink your wording for the crawl. The second paragraph makes no sense because not once does Vader address the issue of the vulnerability of the death star to rebel attack (unless i missed something or you are planning to add this in your edit).
So don't forget that your last paragraph needs to lead straight into your next shot.

Well i was lucky enough to see Star Wars last year at our local tiny arts theater. They had one showing so i took my eldest to see it. the cinema section only seats about 100 and the screen was pretty small. It was a very battered print and we lost audio for about 15 minutes just after luke goes back to the homestead to discover the death of his aunt & uncle. One thing i can remember is that the canyon was indeed darker than my VHS copies but not as dark as it appears on the 2004 DVD (which is why it remains dark in my edit). It didn't look like it was due to the condition of the print because for the most time the colours looked almost the same.

I contacted them recently to see if they have any plans to screen this again for the 30th anniversary and i was told that they had got into a lot of trouble showing this version and it was recalled immediately after. When our old main cinema was closed down and demolished they found a copy of the print in the vaults which they shouldn't have had. So it looks like lucasfilm really doesn't want the original ever to be shown again. Pity but it was well worth the £2 admission fee.

With comments like this you have my suspicions running high about this project. Why make a new thread like the X0 one? Or are you hoping for the attention that a project like the X0 brings in? Do you actually have anything to show or did you post a corrupt file just to get people off your back that wanted to see footage when in fact you have nothing to show but wanted some more attention? I really hope not, but saying that its going to be the end of April until you post the video now can make suspicions rise and will cause people to think that this is actually the reason, even though it may not be.

I really think you should prove me wrong and repost a working clip ( which is quick and easy to do so no excuses there) or i, for one, will not be giving your thread any more attention

I'm sorry if this sounds harsh but i took time out of my busy schedule to try and help you earlier in the thread and then at the first sign of people losing interest you throw your dummy out of your cot, threaten to leave, then don,'t, then want the tread to die and start another one. If things have just got on top of you and you now realise that this edit is beyond your abilities then just tell us that the project is cancelled. You'll earn a lot more respect than stringing people along.

Damn, i wish i'd seen your post vbangle before i downloaded this. i did find something out though. i attempted to open this up in quicktime player and it says: "the movie file "ROTJ RB 1.dv" cannot be found. Without this file the movie cannot play back properly. " Remixerboss check your export setting prior to rendering. I don't use final cut but if you are having problems i'm sure someone with knowledge of this program would be willing to help if you ask.

Already fixed
In the scene where Leia is stunned, one of the stormtroopers is missing the “hash marks” on the sides of his ventilators… can these be added?
I've no plans to address this issue. maybe its just a different uniform stock.
In the scene where Aunt Beru asks Luke to get a droid that speaks Bocce, there are some bushes that appear inconsistently between scenes
I wan't going to do this but if i have enough time i might give it a go.
After Uncle Owen decides to purchase C-3PO, there is a wire visible behind 3PO’s neck… can it be erased?
Again, already fixed
When Luke is eating with his aunt and uncle, Luke lowers his glass in one shot, then lowers it again in the following shot. Trimming a few frames after the cut should fix this and not interfere with Luke’s lines
Trimming the frames just won't work. luke's hand & glass would still be in view when his lines start
When Luke is eating with his aunt and uncle, it’s daytime in the background, but in the following scene when Luke goes outside it’s sunset. Can you play with the light level in the background of the eating scene to match the binary sunset scene?
I've brightened the sunset scene and slightly darkened the background of the eating scene.
C-3PO’s eyes are blue for a moment when Luke surprises him in the garage
this whole shot has been fixed. The colours are totally messed up so i have redone the shot to fix all the issues
When Luke and company enter docking bay 94, we see R2 climbing down the stairs as the camera pans right, then seconds later we see him join Luke and Ben. Given how fast R2 is descending the stairs, this would be impossible. Any possibility of fixing this scene by either erasing R2’s head toward the end of the shot? Or possibly by making R2 tackle the stairs like he did in AOTC?
i was thinking about having R2 do this but it just didn't work so i have left it as it is for now.
As the Falcon escapes Tatooine, we see someone walking away in the corridor, yet everyone besides Chewie and Han are seen buckling themselves in moments earlier in the cargo hold. Can this person be removed?
Again, already fixed
Since you’ve changed the graphics for the Death Star when R2-D2 is plugged in, will you also be changing the Death Star graphics shown in the briefing room? (I was thinking you could use the AOTC graphics first, then keep the existing FX and just change the colour to red.
Yes i will be using the original graphics for most of the schematics and recolouring them to red.
The numbers on the Death Star’s countdown should be changed to Aurabesh (as you did with Luke’s macrobinoculars) for consistency I'm planning on chaning the complete diplay for this anyway.
Every time we see the numbers on the targeting computers in the X-wings, they should be changed to Aurabesh for consistency
Doing this too
OTHER CHANGES TO THINK ABOUT:
- I’m not sure if this will be addressed during the colour correction, but I think the pink flashes during all shootouts in the movie (especially on the Tantive IV) should be more red than pink

All the flashes have been recoloured. they are now white. i think these were originally changed to pink due to epilepsy issues with the lighter flashes, but i could be wrong.
Have you thought about changing Ben’s krayt dragon scream (when he scares off the Sand People) back to the original sound effect? Or perhaps using an entirely different effect altogether (perhaps something from Jurassic Park)?

yes i will be changing the scream for this. I really hate the new one (even though it was there in the original effect). It just sound lame to me and not scary at all.
Are you planning to edit out R2-D2’s “beep” just before Ben removes his hood and says “Hello there?” (the sound effect was not present in earlier versions of ANH; it occurs at 00:30:05)

no plans to do this.
The Duros’ hands in the cantina are mismatched (one has human-sized hands in white gloves, the other bare hands with much longer fingers). Any possibility of making their hands consistent?

No plans to do this either
I know you changed the background behind R2’s head in a certain scene as it looked like the background on the Death Star (I believe it’s the scene immediately following the Falcon’s fight with the TIEs, right after 3PO says, “I think I’m melting.”). If that’s the case, I just wanted to point out we see a similar background while R2 is playing “chess” with Chewie (at 00:59:53, 1:00:02, and 1:00:31). That being said, it MAY just be the panel on the Falcon… not sure.
Already fixed all of those shots
In the scene where Vader and Tarkin just find out Leia has lied to them about the Rebels’ secret base, Vader’s hands move but there’s no dialogue… think you might trim this scene and omit this?

One of the first things i fixed
As Ben’s making his way to the tractor beam controls, we see a group of stormtroopers marching, but one’s armour on the arm is falling apart – can this be fixed?

No plans for this either.
Since you’re changing the blue Rebel insignia on the pilots’ helmets in the hangar, will you be changing them to red in the briefing room as well?

yes i've done this
The explosion of one of the X-wings is pinkish in parts instead of orangish/yellowish; not sure if this will be addressed along with the rest of the colour correction

haven't got this far yet so i'm still unsure what i will be doing with these shots
Just a thought… give Chewie a medal during the closing ceremony? (Although I’m not sure there’s sufficient time during the scene in which Leia could actually give him the medal)

This was covered a while back in the tread. yes, Chewie is getting a medal.
CONFIRMATIONS:
- Did you edit out the scene where the floater droid laughs at and is knocked down by the ASP droid upon entry to Mos Eisley?

Its been changed slightly and only the worker droid remains now.
Did you drop the shot of Walrusman’s severed arm in the cantina? I understand some think this scene goes against the idea of lightsabers cauterizing injuries, but I always liked it. If you decided to keep it, you could try cleaning up the bloody floor and make the wound look as though it’s still smoking a bit. You could also try replacing the hand on the arm to match the “flipper-like” hand we see earlier. I’ve done a quick example to show you what I had in mind

I haven't dropped this shot. i have built a new "flipper" hand and i will be finishing this shot later next week. No more blood
Ben’s saber is purple in a few shots during the duel. I know you fixed the sabers in the entire second half of the duel, but I wasn’t sure about the earlier half, so I figured I’d mention it

All the saber shots have been re-rotoscoped so no miscoloured sabers remain.

Ok, Here's a few more comparison screenshots for you.
http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/4166/vadertarkinhq6.jpg
Removed the blue haze and fixed vaders red eyes.
http://img242.imageshack.us/img242/7906/falconyavinge4.jpg
Fixed the sky. This shot originally had the clouds as if a storm was coming but the shot after the sky was pretty clear so i changed the sky so it is now closer to the following shot
http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/444/r2falconxd2.jpg
Fixed the background error of the shot of R2 after the TIE fighter attack.
http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/1883/rebelhangervb0.jpg
The new Rebel hanger. You will notice that the new shot is flipped. this is because the following shots were originally flipped which was very noticeable by Hans holster & R2's markings. I have flipped the shots to correct this so the hanger has been flipped too.
http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/4861/troopersal0.jpg
As you can see the original had some colour balancing issues, Hans jacket has a blue glow, oversaturated blue walls & the troopers old & new just don't match. The new shot still has some minor work left to do on it
http://img242.imageshack.us/img242/7272/helmetgp7.jpg
When the pilots are getting into their ships their helmet insignias were blue, but there was no blue squadron in the final film. Changed them all to red.
http://img242.imageshack.us/img242/6691/pilotzq5.jpg
And lastly... As the pilots approach the Death Star they fly past Yavin but the in following shots it just disappears. Added Yavin to fix this error

I think it's great to have a little bit more back and forth gunfire, but I also found it distracting in that first shot through the window of the TIE. There is a nice rythym and pace to that shot... we stare at the Falcon coming into targeting range... there is a moment of suspense... then BAM the bad guys fire and we're under attack. Having the Falcon firing right from the start really does distract from one of the best shots in the film. I say let the TIEs fire first and then all hell can break loose (which is another point - it's important to let things build up momentum - any battle scene should generally start out small and get bigger - so saving shots of chaotic cross fire for later will have more impact if you SAVE it for later!)
One thing i have never done is add something in "Just because I can". This scene was actually carefully thought out before i started any FX work. The shot you are talking about, from the TIE cockpit view, had the falcon guns firing back because originally it just seemed to be sitting there letting the TIE fire at it without any retaliation, then next shot they are suddenly firing back. Surely they would have started firing at the TIE's the moment they started attacking the Falcon. It's not as if they were caught by surprise.
Originally posted by: Mojo_LA
As far as the readouts go, I do admit the first time I saw them they did feel a bit too "perfect." Even today, despite them being far more advanced, movies still often tend to make computer readouts look "computery" because that's what people excpect and, frankly, I think it looks cooler - especially on the Falcon, where Han has put his money into making the ship fast - I'd bet a fancy targeting readout is the last thing he would spend money on.
Here i think that the Falcon would have had a better targeting display. Having a simple cursor for ship identification would be terrible for a targeting computer display especially in battle where different types of ships would be involved. How the hell would they know which ship they are firing upon or what is approaching them? having a simple wireframe marker that identifies a ship would be a more logical display and for that reason i added the TIE displays.
Originally posted by: Mojo_LA
Changing the TIEs to simple markers is a good idea, and I would personally alter the frame rate on the displays to twos (i.e. 12 FPS) so they look a little choppier and low-tech. Just dropping the frame rate and ditching any motion blur (if you're using it) would make the displays look a lot less "perfect."
Just tried your suggestion and it works. The displays look much better now. Thanks

i) when ben is cut down, I see you've subtly changed it so that we see his lightsaber and his hands (nice touch) falls away, away from camera, ie to ben's right. but off course, if I'm being really picky that then creates a continuity error because when ben's cloak collapses to the floor, the lightsaber falls on top of it.

My mistake there. the saber actually falls towards Ben but the saber blade layer was set behind the cloak instead of above it and this gave the impression that it falls to the right. I've now corrected this.

ii) when the falcon pivots and accelerates away there is a slight jerk between your change and the original shot on the position of the falcon.

An immediate acceleration wouldn't necessarily be a smooth transition so there would be a slight jerk. I can't actually see what you mean with this shot though. It doesn't look jerky to me.
Originally posted by: tellan

Yeh, it was too fast. Fixed now.

if you look REALLY closely, you will see that the topside quad mount on the falcon is putting backwards, ie towards this tie.
but you've got it firing forwards.

OOOPS. Didn't notice that. i guess i need my glasses changed. I guess you have to be looking pretty close though to spot that so i might leave it as it is.

Personally, I think taking a part of the movie that has no music and adding it is an example of "doing something because I can." Again, consider that the music is left out of that scene FOR A REASON.

I really can't see how you could possibly accuse me of doing something like that. If you have read throughout this thread you will see that there have been ideas i had and tried out that after i sat back and watched them in their entirety i agreed that they didn't work and they were removed.

the music as it stands on the clip is very "in your face" because this was just a very quick mix. It is going to be toned down a lot in the final edit. If you notice the shot where Obi-Wan's cloak drops has been lengthened so the original cue will no longer fit. If i posted the new saber battle in its entirety & with a finished mix then it might become clearer why i still believe that having the music does work.

I decided to do a quick render yesterday of the full battle and decided to show it to everyone that was at my BBQ last evening. 5 i know that are not star wars fans and have never even seen it (OMG ) so i could get a clearer view of the added music. the majority agreed with me on this matter and they loved the music saying it fits in nicely although a few did admit they were too interested in the new sabers than the music. It worled out at about 75% liked it, 25% either didn't or weren't too bothered by it. Maybe having 30 years without music in that scene is why most here don't like it. Who knows. But at the end of the day i do and that was the whole reason i started the project in the first place. I'm sorry to sound like a stubborn kid on this matter but this is the first time i will be going with the minority here on a subject, so the music stays, for the moment. If, after i sit down for the pre-release viewing i feel that it indeed doesn't fit then it will go. ..

Or i guess i could do an alternate mix as a secondary audio track that doesn't have the music i guess so you'd have a choice.

Yeh, this is what i am doing. You'd be surprised how much work i have put into a few scenes and when i watched them back in their entirety they just didn't work so they were scrapped. I have always felt that the SE had a few things added that were purely for "looks what we can do" and i will be steering well clear from that idea. If i feel that a shot or scene doesn't work then i either retry to do it or scrap it from the edit entirely.

For what it's worth, I'm a professional CG artist (I work on Galactica) and my friends and I agree what you are doing is outstanding - just be sure every change you make is as good as the one before it; anything that stands out as a weak link should either be fixed, of if it can't be done right, no matter how cool the concept is, leave it out.
Wow, thanks you. that is an amazing compliment to get. I love the FX work on Galactica. You guys do an amazing job. Thanks for the advise.

The only thing that will take some getting use to is the music inserted into the duel. I just prefer it without music, but I will wait to see it with a completed audio mix before I decide whether I prefer it without music or with music.
I have always felt that the lightsaber duel needed a musical score. Some of the most memorable moments in the OT had an amazing score and it really enhanced the emotional impact for that scene. I actually have the duel with about 7 different soundtracks but none seemed to match up with the impact and shot cues that were on the screen. ever since i have re-edited the beginning part of the duel to make it more intense it seems to fall a bit flat but after adding the first attempt at a musical score to this scene i realised what was missing. I added "Battle of the Heroes" purely by accident when i was messing about one day. i was surprised by how many of the cues seem to match perfectly with each shot change and emotion. It was as if this score was written along with this scene.

I'm using Adobe After Effects 7 for the majority of the FX work. Without this program there is no way i would have been able to do even about 10% of what i have done so far. Its a great program and i would recommend that anyone that wants to do an edit get hold of a copy of this. You won't regret it.

I know that its going to be impossible to do an edit that will ever be 100% perfect for anyone but my only hope is that it comes a bit closer than the SE's do at present and the closest to the vision that i would like to see in a future SE if it were to ever happen..

It seems that the shoot out was sped up a bit to make it "faster, more intense!" The only problem is that it now looks like an old Chaplin movie.... everyone is moving a bit too quickly and it looks un-natural... especially the smoke from the blasters

The problem is that when you add a new piece of music or remix it it will always be a bit jarring at first. I remember when they eliminated the echo effect from the TIE battle music it took me ages to get use to that.

Nothing has been sped up (unless you count that the PAL version is 4% faster than the NTSC version anyway). the only thing i have done to the shoot out is touch up the laser blasts and add blaster flashes where they weren't present.

I've been able to upload this clip now to yousendit.com via a different isp account.

I decided to chose this scene mainly because its the track that i played the most when i got my soundtrack LP back in '77 or 78 (too old to remember exactly when i got it but it was a few weeks after it was released in the UK) so here's the footage that follows my version of "Ben's death & the TIE fighter attack".

there's about 3 - 5 FX shots that are still incomplete and the audio track is again a very temporary one (as you will be able to tell because of missing sound fx & unbalanced music track) but the rest is exactly how its going to be in the final release. There will probably be a few things that people may not like but i'm pretty happy with how its turned out and i won't be going back to change anything at this late stage except for finishing the few shots that i mentioned.

So here it is and happy (early) 30th anniversary.

BEN'S DEATH & TIE FIGHTER ATTACK - HAPPY 30TH ANNIVERSARY - rapidshare 70MB - XVID

sorry to anyone who has problems with rapidshare but i am unable to upload it again because i have reached my ISP upload limit for the month. If someone who has downloaded it could repost it elsewhere to help those people out then i would be very grateful

That clip looks great, Tellan. very good work there.

I don't blame you marking the video file. i've just seen my trailer on youtube that someone has uploaded saying its their work and they even had the nerve to call themselves adywanuk. I love the way they are avoiding the questions about how people are going to get to see the finished result though.

anyway, i'm really looking forward to seeing this project. Are you any closer to giving us a timeframe for release?
