Return of the Jedi - The Spence Edit
Time
Spence101287, i managed to watch your ROTJ edit tonight and i thought that i had to post my opinions about your edit.

When i first read your intentions i was quite eager to see an edit without those horrible Ewoks. I was dying to see how you would be able to remove them without causing damage to the story and still have the final battle play out. I know this is going to sound harsh but i have to be honest here and say i was disappointed with what i saw.

It all just seemed to me that you had rushed the edit and just taken out every shots that contained Ewoks without actually thinking of the consequences of these actions or spent any time blending shots together. You would definitely have benefited from posting some clips to receive feedback before releasing it. The cuts are very jarring. This edit would have benefited if you had taken more time on the audio track. Each time you made an edit it hits you right in the face because the audio track has horrible cuts. If you had blended each cut on the audio side then the cuts may not have been so noticeable. The cuts also lead to some confusion in the story. At one point you cut from Luke having just cut down the speeder bike, to the Death Star, then back to Luke & Leia in some strange location talking about their mother and Leia is now wearing the tribal costume, then luke Gives himself up to vader. The next time we see the rebels the battle has already begun and it loses any sort of build up the battle originally had. You cut out any scenes where the rebels were approaching the shield generator which could easily have been left in whilst still cutting out Ewoks. This would have helped no end as a lead up to the battle. Some added wipes between a few of the cuts would also have helped smooth things out. Sony Vegas would be an invaluable program for an edit like this because it contains most of the wipes used in the Star Wars Movies. Also consider using the HD sources for where you could just zoom in on an area to remove an Ewok or Ewoks rather than cutting the shot completely, but without losing too much quality.

You have the basis of an amazing edit here Spence101287. Bouncing ideas back & forth from the great members here would have been your best bet to producing your vision. You could also get help & tips about your audio editing and even someone could possibly help you remove Ewoks from shots or scenes you need for the story to progress smoothly.

I will say that i love the ending. Having the force ghosts as the final shot is a great idea. you do need to add some added ambient FX though. It just sounds strange with music only. And also having your main audio track as mono and then the music cuts in in glorious stereo also jumped out too much.

I say seriously think about a Version 2 for this edit. Get the help and advise you need and go for it. If you need any help or advise just give me a shout cuz i'd be more than willing to help out where i could, time permitting. This has the makings of a great edit

I had major problems with adobe premier & the lagaryth codec. After i finally managed to import the lagaryth files( i had to run it through VirtualDub first using full processing setting to get it to do this) My out put files would have corrupt frames with lots of coloured bolcks in. But if i rendered the same clip a second time the corrupt frames would be in a different place. I gave up using Premier totally and just use Adobe after effects & vegas 7 now. I can get much better results with these two progs too.

I won't be adding the center laser on the Death Star in ANH. I agree that it does make the 2nd DS look more powerful so it will remain as it is .

The edit has almost ground to a hault . I'm very close to my target for funds for the drives so i'm just going to have continue plea my plea for donations. And many thanks to those who have donated so far.

We don't actually know how much time has passed since they escaped. It could have been weeks. They had to analyze the plans, draw up their strategy and get everything ready for the face off so its safe to say that some time passed.

I know you were concerned when the meltdown occured that it would take month and months to redo all the effects, but it sounds like you've been able to bounce back faster and better. Was that because the Adobe After Effects files and elements were still intact? Not knowing a lot about that program, I admit I am curious. Keep up the fight.

Partly, yes. i was able to redo about 80% of the missing effects thanks to the fact the adobe after effects project files were saved. Some i had to start from scratch, like the complete opening sequences until we first see the droids aboard the Tantive. The colour correction was another matter. because it went through a three step, at least, process these had to be done from scratch. I must have been having at the most 5 hours sleep a night since this happened because i've been working flat out to catch up. When i get the drives i'll still be working to a schedule like that until its released by the looks of things.

@DGC General X, I won't be adding any aliens to the rebel alliance.

I've almost finished work on the missing pieces so i should hopefully be back on track soon. having to redo the colour correction caused a few problems with existing footage so i have had to go back and tweak about 70% of the movie. ive dropped the saturation especially on faces to try and eliminate that over tanned look. Having to mask out each face for the most part so i don't lose the colour of background objects is a long process but it is giving good results that couldn't be achieved without doing this. Some shots are beyond repair as i have said before and they are beyond repair. i hate the way the OT has been greatly over-saturated just to make it look like the prequels. When i get around to them i will be dropping the saturation to match the OT instead.

Adywan, in whatever location you decide to stick Lucas, don't ever tell me where it is. That's something I'd rather have as a forever unknown in my own head.

Don't worry, I'll won't be revealing where the cameos will be.

@ andy_k_250, thanks for the link. It has come in handy. there were a few things there that i had missed.

You can either use George circa '76/'77, or old George now. It could be a very subtle effect and maybe someone watching who doesn't know it's there might even completely miss it on the first viewing. But it would be a cool Lucas cameo, even cooler than the one in SITH, I think.

Thoughts?

Actually that a good idea. You really got me thinking on this one. It would be kinda cool. I might not put it in the throne room scene though cuz everyone will be looking there now.

Yeh, that's the explosion i used in the end. The final episode was transmitted In Hi-def on the UK's SKYONE quite a few months ago. I was really surprised that we got to see the final episode ages before the US did.

At least one good thing has come out of the hell that happened recently. the colour correction has turned out 10x better than it looked originally so i've gone back and redone quite a few scenes so far and been able to correct a lot of shots that i was just not happy with. Fore example, if you look at the cockpit scenes aboard the falcon Han's shirt suddenly turns from a yellow to bright white (well blue on the 2004 dvd's, lol.) i've corrected this and now Han's shirt is now yellow/tan throughout these shots. had to do a lot of masking work to achieve this but its was worth it. The colour correction will never be perfect because of the state of the DVD's. Skin tones are all shot to hell but i've managed to get some good results so far, but some shots are beyond hope.

Space is a huge factor now. probably got 2 days left of work left until there is no more space available. Tried to free up a lot of space by deleting un-needed video clips but i can't because i need them all just in case i need to go back and tweak anything, so if i deleted them after effects projects would be corrupt. oh well.

I've started work on replacing the lost footage but with losing the drive i have about 14gb of space left so I'm gonna run out of space real fast. Once that space has gone then things will halt until i have enough funds for the replacement drives.

Adywan, maybe I am being parinoid, but maybe you should work on this project on a computer not hooked to the internet or an ethernet. This would stop anything bad being pumped into your computer.
My new Core2Duo machine is being used solely for this edit and isn't connected to the net. My old P4 is now being used just for surfing and all other PC things. I'm not taking any chances. . The problem i had this time was due to a dodgy motherboard anyway.
You know, I don't know why I have such good luck. I'm 26, and I've used computers at home for 10 years. In that time, I've never had a system failure and never had a significant virus/malware infection. Knock on wood.

The PC i use for this edit is on 24/7 so i guess things are going to wear out a lot quicker. God my electric bill has been horrendous since i started this edit, but it will be worth it in the end.

I would never deal with ebuyer.com ever again. when i was getting the last 2 hard drives i ordered them and they made a mistake and sent me 20 but separately and charged me for 20 separate delivery charges. when we contacted them to complain and said that we would not be paying for more than 1 delivery charge because it was their fault they closed our account so i couldn't contact them through their system anymore , rang them up to see what was being done about it and got told to f**k off and that they have enough customers to do without our business, and we had to wait 6 months to even get our money back after they had received the drives even with solicitors letters and the bank getting involved. I now always use microdirect.co.uk. If i have ever had any problem then they have always sorted it out immediately and have always been more than willing to help.

no. It was a 3 step process. firstly i applied a basic global correction with VirtualDub, then imported into Vegas & applied correction separately shot by shot then imported shots that required separate colours to be suppressed or corrected into adobe after effects & created mattes & layers so that correct (or as close as possible given the source) elements would not be affected with further correction. An example would be lukes garage scene especially the last few shots. if you look in the background when beru calls him the once white doorway has now a horrible turquoise tint to it. Trying to remove this by a simple correction would have change elements in the foreground too much so i had to use after effects to do hell of a lot of shots like this. So i have a long process to replace all the missing footage to match the surviving footage (plus there are effects elements to redo too). So it is impossible just to load up the .veg file i'm afraid. I really wish it could be that simple

Well 3 drives would be a dream really. Luckily my new board has 8 SATA-II ports so i wouldn't need any external drives or a raid card, so it would be a lot cheaper. I've been looking at some drives and 500gb internal SATA-II are now only around the £70 mark and then all i would need to get is a good quality removable drive bay ( not over keen on any external solution due to bad experiences in the past with usb drives), which the bay would only be about £40 so i need to get about £250 in total. Having 3 drives would open up a new world (especially the third for backup alone). doing the fx for the death star battle takes up an amazing amount of space using the lagaryth codec. One shot alone can take up over 6gb of space before rendering. So i think i am going to go with the suggestions of 3 drives, but that would probably make me sound very greedy. And once this edit is finished i can get straight onto ESB & ROTJ

once again many thanks for all your support

well ideally, with everything that has happened, i'm looking to get 2 hard drives. 1 to replace the faulty one and the second to be used as a removable drive with copies of all the finished footage & important files.

I do have a paypal account, but as you know i really feel uncomfortable about asking for any form of donation because that is not what i am doing this edit for. It is:

adywan"at"hotmail.co.uk (where the "at" i replaced with the @)

thanks everyone for your support. I'm not going to give up on the edit, i just felt really depressed yesterday after a totally bad day. I've come too far to give up at this point, and now that it looks very unlikely we are going to get the ultimate box set any time soon, i'm even more determined.

Unfortunately not. This drive i've purchased a while ago when 400gb drives were a ridiculous price. Now they're a fraction of the price i payed for this.
