STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION
Time
OK, a quick update.

First let me say thanks for all the support and offers of help. It is greatly appreciated,

secondly, i have some good news & some bad news. First the good news: the data recovery has managed to get back about 90% of the lost files.
Now the bad news: Most of the avi files have been corrupted. I used a program to fix the avi files and they are now viewable. You can imagine my relief. But then i opened up my project file in Vegas and noticed something strange. Hell of a lot of the files are now a few frames shorter. I tried again with a couple more avi fixer programs but with the same results, well all apart from 1. This time the clips were now the correct length but upon closer inspection there are blank frames. Luckily one of the recovered files was a render of the first 45 minutes of the movie. I have checked the file and , although this too is missing frames, it isn't present all the way through. I've just edited out the bad sections and all i have lost now is about 25 minutes of the movie. So back to the drawing board with the whole opening 10 minutes & bits & bobs in the rest of the first half. Luckily there aren't too many FX shots that need redoing but now i have the hard task of colour correcting the footage again to match the rescued sections. Also i still have most of the adobe after effects project files so i can redo a lot of the footage easily. The problem is now that my drive has too many bad sectors to be used again so I'm putting the project on hold for a few months until i can save up for the new drive. Bloody typical this had to happen when i used all the money i saved on the bloody new core2duo machine. oh well, at least i don't feel like giving up any more but it is going to mean that the project is going to be pushed back probably now until 2008

We tried to recover the backup disc but it failed. Only 6 hours left to go with the HDD recovery. Luckily i have the second home pc that i can use while the program is working away

I have no plans as yet to do this.

Just had a MAJOR setback today.
Put together my new Core2Duo machine and installed everything back on my machine. WOW its fast. But then things started to act a little strange. the system would hang then suddenly windows would dissappear. I shut it down then restarted it and things seemed to go back to normal, for a while. It started happening again then just froze. I tried to restart it but none of the power buttons would work. so i had to turn the power off at my surge protector. Now the system just seemed dead. Opened the case and i noticed a black patch on the motherboard. Ripped it out and took it back to the shop i purchased it from and they seemed a little too quick to take it back and offer a replacement. All the boards for the same price i got mine were not what i wanted (not enought SATA ports) so they offered me a new Asus board with 8 SATA ports, but for the same price i payed for mine. I got a little suspicious at their generosity but i won't look a gift horse in the mouth.

Got it back home and reinstalled everything. Seems a lot faster than my other board too. But something happened once windows was installed that made me just want to jump out of my window (not that that would do any good cuz i live on the ground floor). Windows scanned my discs and my main 400gb drive with most of the edit on seemed to have a lot of orphaned files so windows attempted to recover. windows finished and loaded up and i immediately opened this drive in explorer and weeped. Gone was most of the files. The first hour is completely gone. Luckily most of the second hour is on a seperate drive, but all that work gone off the drive, including all the death star battle scenes i was working for the past 2 weeks. I felt like crying until i realised that i had done a complete backup 2 weeks ago. Out came the 30 DVD backup discs. One by one it loaded the backup files onto my other drive ready for unpacking. THen BAM!! disc 23 wouldn't read. Strange because i had verified and checked the discs as soon as the backup finished and unpacked everything fine. Looked at the disc and no scrathes, dust or any marks at all. Gave it a clean but still no luck. tried 3 different DVD drives but with the same results, so the back up is gone. I rang the shop and spoke to my mate and he said he would pop round after work to look at it.

He came round and fiddled about but couldn't get the backup to work either, but he did tell me something very interesting. The Gigabye board i purched from them was actually a "grey" import and they had had almost everyone they had sold returned with the same problem. So much for thinking i had a bargain. All that work down the toilet. He has given me some software that may be able to recover the files that windows deleted. It is a lot better than the one i have got but hell of a lot slower. Its going to take 24 hours to do an indepth recovery process on my 400gb drive and even then i may have lost everything for good. If its all gone then do i continue or just quit and hand what i have left for someone elses edit? I know what i feel like doing at the moment.

Help me recovery software..... you're my only hope

Ripping video from DVD
Time
I see that you are ripping BBC DVD. I have quite a few BBC DVDs and most of them are interlaced and not progressive like most other PAL DVD's. Also the field order on a few is totally messed up so cause all sorts of problems when working with them. I guess its just typical that the BBC would use the cheapest bidder to produce their DVDs. You could try ripping the whole DVD to your hard drive first ( setting your prefs in DVDdecrypter not to split files and to have the maximum files size first) and then use VobEdit to strip the streams.

Also, I was thinking it might be worth it for this very special project to invest in DVAtlantis and simply convert the PAL version to NTSC myself.

I'd wait for the NTSC version. It will be encoded direct from the lossless avi master video. Converting to NTSC from the PAL DVD would lose some quality.

PS2 DVDR Problem?
Time
Media quality can be a very big factor with PS2 playback problems. Are they just not playing at all or just skipping and freezing? If its the later then try better media. I always use Taiyo Yuden discs. I had problems with movies with the PS2 until i changed media (originally changed to ritek dye discs until they began to degrade so swapped to TY and haven't looked back since)

If you can give a few more details of the problems you are having then i may be able to help

adywan, is there any chance you could send me the clip of Obi-Wan in the cantina, so I could give it a shot and try to manually remove the shadows?
You would be better off working with the original footage for this because the new glow would cause a problem when removing the shadows.
Gosh, I hope there is an eventual NTSC version of this.

Yes, there will be. Not too long after the PAL version is released
It's a pal thing - it threw me off at first too. For some reason everyone in Europe likes their movies fast.

I'd rather have the speed-up any day than have jerky movement cause by extra frames and an inferior picture resolution. In an ideal world i'd prefer 24fps with the PAL Video resolution, but that ain't gonna happen.

I know the expected release date has past so there's no point in rushing anything. But can you give us an updated ETA?
I'm hoping to have this out by the 30th anniversary of the UK release, November, at the latest.
Could you possibly lift Jar Jar out of TPM and put him in one shot in ANH? Maybe somewhere in Mos Eisley? Like Where's Waldo? -- Where's Jar Jar?
Jar Jar definitely will not be in the OT. He features in one of the special features deleted scenes (the cut extended death of Alderaan scene), but not in the main movies.
Adywan, have you considered the mesh idea from Tellan?
Yes, i have. I will be contacting jedilaw for permission to use his meshes and then hopefully find someone who would be willing to help me out with a couple of shots (nudge nudge, wink wink tellan. lol )
Yes, the jump cut from matt painting to model when we race into the trench in POV needs to be fixed.

I'm working on that at the moment using the model shot to create the matte. Should flow together more smoothly.
Adywan, about the detail lost in the sandcrawler scenes on the 2004 dvds, couldn't you replace the 2004 shots with footage from that 1997 special edition HD transfer I'm always hearing about. Or would that not work for one reason or another.

Is there a HD transfer of the 1997 SE? I thought that there was only a 2004 version transfer ever aired. If there was a 1997 HD version then i would have been using that from the start. Would have saved me a lot of colour correction.
Incidentally, adywan, here's a thought that you've probably already thought: will we be able to see Yavin in the background during the Death Star battle, and not just on the approach? That'd be neat, even if it's just in one appropriate shot.

Yes, Yavin will be present in some shots.

nohandluke. thanks for your great comments. I hope this edit won't put you off the SE's again.

Ok, heres something from the scene i have just finished. For all you guys that have waited 30 years for this:

They seemed to be much lighter, and I could see much more of the detail. Are those scenes in your version as dark as the official dvds, they were in the first 8min video you posted (the one with the disco music) or is my computer screen way to dark. I think it would make the shot where you added a battle droid look much nicer because in the original you can actually see alot of the detail.

Unfortunately most of the detail in the dark areas has been lost in the 2004 DVD's and brightening these scenes any more than i have already would result in a lot of horrible video noise, but still without the detail in the darker areas, so my version is just slightly lighter than the 2004 DVD's.

You don't have to apologise to RemixerBoss, he is just an ass. You're more than welcome here.

Maybe redoing the laser blasts and explosion would make that scene more real looking? To me the X-Wing laser blasts are HUGE when compared with the scale of the buildings, and the explosion and fire is what looks fake.....
I have attempted this after your suggestion but matting out the original lasers proved difficult and even with reducing the size of the lasers the shot still looks crappy.
"I've tried using HDTV footage from Jedi for the surface and added lukes X-wing diving in whilst blasting away..."
--Sounds interesting...Since you're not using that shot, you wanna post it?
sorry but i deleted this shot because i'm running out of hard drive space very fast.
Hey ADY. This is really stupid, but I was wondering if it is possible to put alien heads on some rebels bodies, just so it doesn't look all human if you know wat I mean. I know it's stupid, but just tell me wat Ur thoughts R on it.

Interesting idea but this is one thing i won't be adding.
Ady, Did you post a clip a while back of Vader vs. Obi with the final/completed versions of the lightsabers?

yes, the rapidshare link is still active.
Ben's Death & TIE Fighter Attack
There have been some changes to this sequence since i posted it, new colour correction, added stars in the background of all the docking bay window shots & the opening shot of the TIE fighter cockpit window they don't start firing until the Falcon is in view.
one of the worst mistakes for me, has always been the lightsabers casting shadows and not really illuminating it's surroundings. Even in ROTS, the mistakes still ocurr. Do you think it would be too time consuming to actually remove every shadow?

I attempted to remove shadows a while ago but i gave up because this was so difficult to do. shadows cast on walls were easy to remove but when they are cast on clothing and moving objects it is a lot more difficult to do so i dropped doing it. I will leave this for someone else to fix in their edit.

Now onto my progress:

I've had a break from FX work for a few days and have redone all of the colour correction i did for the death star interior scenes. I didn't like the video noise that the original correction caused, mainly when removing the blue from the horribly oversaturated walls. I've tackled this a different way and now have nice metalic grey walls without the noise so i'm happy with it now.
I will be having a short break from everything next week because i have just ordered parts to upgrade my PC. Finally getting my 2.4ghz core 2 duo machine, so its gonna take me a while to reinstall all the stuff i have on this machine now. But once its done i will be getting straight back to it. Yesterday i rendered the whole film as it stands so far and watched it on my PS3. The Ps3's DVD upscaling is great and i was surprised just how good it looked even with a single layer render. I counted 4 shots that i wasn't happy with the colour correction ans 1 FX shot that just didn't look quite right but i'm pleased with everything else.

And one final thing. RemixerBoss, i thought that you had decided to leave the boards after your little hissy fit? You proved you were only here for attention so you really don't have the right to tell someone in here to stop spamming especially if you had bothered to read the posts from DGC General X, then you would see that he wasn't. So please just do what you promised and bugger off, you are not welcome in this thread.

SomethingStarWarsRelated, i have just viewed your clip and you idea is pretty good but would cause too many problems really. Not only would i have to have a new shot of the speeder but every moving element too because everyone would be walking backwards. Also it would make it look like they are leaving the city. So i'm leaving the entrance the way it is but i have taken out the "hitting the droid on the head" shot.
I would like to suggest that you do a commentary track for your version covering the changes you've made, the thoughts behind them, etc. I know I would listen to it.

That would be a pretty cool idea. I guess i may attempt that. I could mix it with the 2004 commentary track and be alongside GL

Sluggo, i was going to redo the elevator matte and have it as a wider shot with a lot of activity below but i just could find the material to pull this off so i had to scrap it. I might give it another go later but at the moment its not looking like i'll be able to do anything with it....yet
I have been following the visual guides. I never realised until reading them that the the second shot we see of the rebel troopers was a flip shot. I've managed to fix the other flip shots but missed this one. Don't know how i'm going to fix this though because if i just flip it back then it will give the impression that they are running from a different direction. Damn. Looks like this error will have to stay.

Also its looking like that horrible model shot of the death stars surface when luke blasts at it will ahve to stay too. I've become totally stuck as to what to do here. I've tried using HDTV footage from Jedi for the surface and added lukes X-wing diving in whilst blasting away but it looks horrible and there aren't many close up shots of the surface that i could work with so i have given up with this for the time being.

1) I'm in favor, along with others, to changing all English words in the film to Aurabesh. However I'm against doing this with numbers. Numbers on countdown clocks, target computers, etc, should be left alone. Numbers are universal and all cultures understand them.
I won't be changing numbers but i will be adding the Aurabesh language. I agree with you about the numbers, after all if you look on the wall at docking bay 94 it has plain old numbers so no need to change them.

2) I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before. Every time we see the Death Star computer tracking the the rebel moon base we hear the imperial targeting computer talking. But if you pay attention the time on the countdown clock doesn't match what time the computer is giving. Is it possible for you to fix the time discrepancy between the voice and the clock?

Yes, this is one of the things i am changing. It's going to be a brand new display with the correct countdown.

forwards, the stars barely move because everyone is heading straight at the death star.
when we look back at the pilots, the stars are moving right to left diagonally quite a bit. so it creates a bit of inconsistency.
I had the stars moving in that fashion because i was originally going to have Death Star further around Yavin so they would have to be turning around the planet to reach it. But i just couldn't pull it off (did one last attempt after i posted the clip) so the stars in the clip move faster than they would do if they were heading straight. I've now redone the stars and they move hell of a lot slower now.

Just screened Star Wars last night to kinda sorta celebrate 30 years and I noticed that not only are the microphones supposed to be on the left side of the pilots' helmets, but the mic wire should also be on the left side. Any way you can further tweak the flipped Red leader shot to deal with this issue?

Thanks for spotting that one. It's been fixed and the wire is now on the correct side.
