STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 <strong>REVISITED</strong> ADYWAN *<em>1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION</em>

Originally posted by: BrimleyAdy, any plans for a screening somewhere? I'm sure it's something that the UK fans would be interested in...

A private screening would have been nice to do but will likely never be a possibility because it would infringe on the copywrite laws. The only way this could ever happen would be with express permission from Lucaslfilm which i highly doubt would ever happen.

Well i have finally hit the nightmare section of the edit: Luke's trench run. So many shot have the trench background missing and adding the missing backgrounds is a very long and hard process. The background as it stands is totally black and matting out the cockpit where no information exists & then tracking its motion for the matte is bloody difficult. Its a frame by frame process at this point. One shot alone has taken me the past 3 days to do. Why most of red leader & gold leaders trench runs have the trench background in place but so much of lukes is missing this is a mystery to me. i know time became a factor when making star wars but its not as if they had to shoot a different background plate for these shots as they had already used it in prior shots. This has slowed me down so much i'm starting to panic because November is almost upon me and i still have so many shots to do. I really don't want to have to push the release date back yet again. Anyway here's a comparison screenshot of the new trench background:

ORIGINAL:

NEW:

Oh, and before anyone mentions that the colour has been stripped away from the cockpit then this is intentional. Once you have removed that horrible blue cast there isn't much colour left. But the main reason is that many shots from the SE DVD the cockpit has no colour so and i am doing my best to correct colour inconsistencies from shot to shot and it is hell of a lot easier to remove the colour than replace it. Here's a snapshot direct from the 2004 DVD with no colour correction:
http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/8881/greygz6.jpg
This can't be helped because if i attempted to add colour to the shots then it looks horribly fake and i want to avoid that. This problem also exists, but to a lesser degree, in the OUT so i couldn't overlay footage from the gout for elements that are too desaturated to fix this.

Thanks for the offer DE. The crawl is actually complete now. The yellow does look somewhat different in the pic i posted than it does when watched on the monitor or my TV so that's really weird. But it could be an optical illusion. If you look at the "A New Hope" title it looks a paler yellow so it could be that adding the red guide lines has changed the appearance of the colour slightly. i chose a yellow that i think looks the best as if you notice throughout the saga it changes colour throughout most of them. This will be my little signature on the saga as they will now all be the same shade. It's actually the same colour as it was in the clip of the opening sequences a while back and no one complained about it back then or the intensity of the stars so it will be staying as it is now.
Originally posted by: dumb_kidto my eyes the new crawl color and star field look great... although shouldn't the crawl span the entire screen left to right when coming form the bottom of the frame? ...different strokes for different folks I guess.

Its actually the same width as it is on the original
http://img65.imageshack.us/img65/7821/crawlcomparisonlf0.jpg
As you can see it is the same width. Also this shows that there isn't a great difference in colour from the original 2004 DVd colour except it isn't as washed out. Definitely must be the red lines that's throwing the colour out in the last pic because both pics are from the same still capture..

i now have to close the suggestion box for this release. Its getting very close to completion and i know which shots i have left to finish and what i want to do with them so i will not be changing anything else at this late stage.

Including the non-descript "world music" ending soundtrack?.... Long live the Yuck-yuck song

Also for Jedi what version of Sy Snoodles will you be using, puppert or cg... I sure hope Lapti Nek is back.... most perferable the film version not the soundtrack version

"Yub-Yub" or the new "world music" will feature at the end if i can pull it off. i want an orchestral piece for the end. Asfor Sy then i won't be featuring any sort of musical number. i will just be having the band in the background similar to that of the cantina band in ANH so no song as such. But that could all change. It's going to be a couple of years before i get to ROTJ

Damn, i really wish you had mentioned this a while ago. I've completed work on most of the new display graphics , including the new Death Star countdown screens, and would now be impossible to go back now to use your amazing font. There are so many different layers involved, each rendered in sections, that i would have to start from scratch to be able to change the font i'm afraid. I would have preferred to have used one that was movie accurate but i didn't know until i just read your post that Aurabesh wasn't. I still have a few more graphics to complete so i will be using your galactic font for these. Most people won't even notice the difference but i am a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to things like this. Thanks for the font Erikstormtrooper. I still have 5 more movies to do so at least now those ones will be more accurate.

Here's a shot of one of the new Death Star display graphics.

Hmm, that's odd. Well I might as well just post it here then. I was just wondering which special edition changes in ESB you don't like? Also, aside from his grin, why don't you like Hayden at the end of ROTJ, and do you think you'll keep the Naboo shot during the celebration?

Well i hate the new shuttle sequences added to the end of ESB. they just break up the flow of the action. I don't mind the new "alert my stardestroyer..." section but the rest has to either be minimised to one shot or gone completely. Also they add a nice new window in cloud city just before they meet Vader but for the rest of the sequence the window is back to its pre-SE appearance. Ad Hayden in ROTJ is one of the worse changes in the whole SE saga. He is looking straight at the camera, weird grin on his face and is just sooooooo out of place that i can't watch the DVD version of Jedi any more. Why the hell would he appear as a force ghost as his younger self? he turned back to the good side when he was an old man and that was the first time Luke got to see his fathers face. And i hate the excuses that "he was younger when he turned to the dark side so his ghost would have the appearance that he was younger" bollox. Luke wouldn't even know who the hell this guy was that just appeared by Obi-Wan & Yoda. It makes sense to me that he should be an old man when he appears and i will not be budging on that when i come to ROTJ. I will be keeping all the celebration shots at the end of ROTJ but just removing the "weesa free" line from it.

sorry but Aurabesh is here to stay. i can't see why you have a problem with it. After all it is set in a galaxy far, far away so naturally their written language would be different. Just look at the diverse amounts of language on our own planet. If you ahte it so much you are going to hate my edit... there's more , a lot more, of it than originally.
Originally posted by: Darth ChronusBy the way could you let me design a DVD cover for your 'Episode IV' edit, I love designing things like that - oh, and I could have them ready online by late October. Would that be ok?

yes that would be brilliant. i have put a couple of requests out for people to start sending me their covers but so far only 1 person has replied. I've seen so many great covers from artists on this site but i guess they are passing my edit by. . Even though i will be doing the official cover i do want to showcase the talents of anyone who can come up with a cover for this edit in the DVD-ROM folder of the finished DVD

i always preferred it's secure myself

Well this audio mix, mainly dialogue wise, is going to be based on the mono mix. Thats the mix i always remember as a kid, mainly because it was the version i watched all the time after taping it off the TV, and thats the one i prefer. The 2004 mix contains elements of the mono mix, namely when the stormtroopers stop Luke & co at the mos eisley checkpoint.
the section you mentioned has been returned to the monomix dialogue. this dialogue fits better especially when the trooper says "check
that side of the street. he motions exactly that and a trooper moves to the other side. But in the other mixes he says this side of the street but motions to the other side still. It just doesn't fit what you see onscreen.
Originally posted by: Darth ChronusOne final thing - will there be some minor editing done to Episode's V and VI (though I think its a good thing they put Hayden Christensen in at the end of VI, they could have made him look about 45 by adding make-up on him).

Yes there will be , but not as extensive as ANH. Jedi needs the most work where as Empire just needs a few elements changing as it is a great movie as it stand (except a couple of the SE changes that have to go). So those 2 films will mainly be touching up (unless we get some deleted scenes before i get around to the sequels of course). But Hayden has to go in Jedi. That is one of my most hated change in any of the SE's (Greedo shooting first being my number 1). Sebastian Shaw will be returning for my edit so it will definately be the return of the original jedi. lol

The audio mix is coming along nicely. i have about half the movie complete already. Just finished the cantina. there are more ambient sounds 7 a bit more echo on the music. this now feels to me like you are actually in the cantina as you have sounds coming from all speakers now. this also applies to the Tantive IV battle where the lasers will be coming at you from all directions.

I've just finished watching it and i loved it. Problem is i woke the wife up laughing (its 5.30am here in the Uk) so i'm in the dog house now, but who cares. lol I loved the way they seemed to keep to the original version with only a couple (if that) SE references. It would have been great watching it with a live audience like yanksno1 said. I'm going to watch it again later with the wife & kids. Plus there is a couple of explosions in there that i can steal for my edit

2007 DVD repackage

Sorry Sluggo I don't think I could get a picture, but it was basically this image:

with the roman numerals I, II, III (in gold lettering) and underneath IV, V, VI (in silver lettering) and the words "30th Anniversary" at the top of the poster. That's all it said. Nothing about what edition the films were, but it was obvious it was all 6 films and it was for the 30th anniversary.

I reckon its just a box set of previous releases, rather than re-edited versions, but that's just a guess.

Well if it is going to be all 6 movies in a tin with that image i guess they're just going to use the unsold tin that was released here last year
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/I/51GKKZY8FFL._SS500_.jpg

No amount of repackaging is going to make anyone want to buy these sets again unless there is some pretty good extras. My bet is that we won't see any new features until they decide which Hd format the will release the saga on or maybe when the TV series hits our screens and then they may release a ultimate edition DVd box set. Until then it will just be rehash after rehash of the same old disks.

Its not something i'm going to fix. there was probably a sewing kit in the stormtroopers utility belt so she fixed the rip after they escaped the compactor.

Sluggo, did you get my PM?

I've been working hard on the new audio mix. I have to admit that i do think that the "wedge" line fits in better so i think i'm returning to that. Changing that one line wouldn't impact on Biggs' role. It is Wedge after all that is supposed to be coming to Lukes rescue and Luke is getting impatient with him. It just seems to me that he would be wondering where Wedge was and not Biggs at that point.

Its all sounding good so far. This mix is definately made for surround sound. more effects in the rear channels and more ambience instead of just plain music like most of the original mix.

Well i've quit smoking. I'm using the nicotine patches but it been hell so far. 24 hours without a ciggy. problem now is that giving up smoking has made doing this edit 1000 times more stressful. lol. i usually have a cig when i'm waiting for a hot to render or while previewing the finished shot and while i have a break. thats been the hardest part so far. Thing is now though i will be spending more money on the patches than i would on my tobacco. My local health authority won't supply me with anything to help me quit smoking apart from a bloody leaflet & support website which are a total waste of time.

so back to the edit.....

i'm having a couple of days break from the video side of things and i have decided to get more work done on the audio now that i have most of the movie finished. I've replaced the line " damn it Biggs where are you?" with the line " damn it Wedge, where are you?" from the monomix. This line always seemed more fitting to me because its Wedge thats coming to help him and not Biggs. Also all of Berus lines have been replaced with the monomix lines. the original actress just sounds more natural to me. The line that Luke says in the Death Star battle, "I'm on it" seems very high pitched and almost pre-pubescent and not like Mark at all. i've lowered the pitch slightly and now his voice sounds like Mark. I have to say a big thanks to Belbucus & Moth3r for the great work on the restored monomix.

a while ago someone offered to post the 5.1 SE laserdisc audio track for me but at the time i didn't think i needed it, but now i realise that it would be of great help to my new mix ( very handy to have as many sources as possible). I can't remember who it was because i deleted my PM's but if anyone can help me out with this audio track then i would be very grateful.

I know it isn't that overweight, and i'm 5ft 10inch, but before i had all the problem with my back & leg joints 6 years ago then i was only 10.5 stone and had been since i was a teenager. The funny thing was that up until she asked me if i smoked she was really nice then suddenly changed her attitude. She was giving me a lecture about how much damage i will have done to my body through smoking and she said that i will soon see when she does the medical. Well she tested my blood pressure first - perfect, so no problems there. Next was my cholesterol level - perfect too. She wasn't too happy at this point because so far there was nothing that she could blame on smoking but then she tested my lung capacity . Now this really pissed her off when she consulted her chart and had to tell me that i had the lung capacity of a 19year old NON smoker. So out the window went the theory about the smoking part of things and i have been smoking for 23 years. So to be told that i won't be able to have the op because i smoke was a joke. i have been to a solicitor to see what can be done but he has said that its doubtful that i will be able to pursue things because its happening up and down the country now and getting more widespread as hospital policy.

Hi again guys.

thanks for all the well wishes. it is greatly appreciated.

Well it turned out that they cancelled my op when i turned up for the appointment. they made some excuse that they had some emergencies that took priority ( there were a couple of illegal immigrants in handcuffs that were going to get my slot for treatment, but don't get me started on that one) so i tried to rebook my appointment but was told that they could only send out the appointment by letter. well today i received the letter and no appointment. they have refused to treat me because i smoke and i am overweight, which the weight issue is actually caused by my illness that i was having the operation for and the reason i can no longer work. Only when i can prove to them that i haven't smoked for at least a month & have lost about 1 stone ( i'm not grossly overweight in today's society as i am only 15 stone) then they would reassess my op. What a great country i live in. you can get treatment if you abuse alcohol, are a class A drug user, paedophile, rapist, or any other type of criminal, but if you smoke and are overweight then they will now refuse to treat you but not have the guts to say it to your face. i worked most of my adult life and paid into the NHS with my contributions, have no criminal record, but i now have to suffer with pain because i smoke & cannot exercise to lose the weight. They have also cancelled an appointment i had to remove a wisdom tooth too.

So i have just concentrated on the edit. Luckily it keeps me from thinking too much about what a piece of shit country i live in nowadays.

I've just finished the new graphics for the Death Star countdown. Even though they are all new i have kept them very similar to the original design. So things are still on schedule for a November release

Well i've managed to get s**t loads done this week. Just completed Red & Gold leaders trench runs (even after a HUGE disaster this week thanks to our local electricity board f**k up when a few of my electrical items went "bang" including my PC, which was connected to an insured surge protector that the company no refuses to honour the insurance, but don't get me started on that.lol. ) so things are still on track for a November. i have also received the animatic render for new approach of the TIEs shot and i have to say it is going to be awesome. No more crappy TIEs flying in formation.

i have to take a break for a while because i am off into hospital in an hour so i'm going to feel like s**t for the next week or so but hopefully it won't be too long before i can get back to the edit.

2007 DVD repackage
Time
Well my guess is that its just going to be a repackaging of the 2004 DVDs. i doubt that we'll get to see any new stuff and deleted scenes until the trilogy gets released on either Bluray or HD-DVD so we'll all go out and buy those ones and then sales of HD players will rocket and it will all be down to Star Wars.

Don't forget that it isn't about the films or fans any more, it's all about the money.
