Thanks for proving I'm not mad :D

Is there any possibility that the "old" version of the music sync be reinstated in ESB:R? Because I found it bothering actually since the very first time I've watched the DVD :P

i won't be concentrating on the audio side of things until i have completed all the video work but i'll take a look at that shot.

Ady: In the asteroid chase there is a big asteroid that is like painting and its not moving. Are you going to do something about that?

yes, that matte painting needs to go

Bewy said:

But won't the shot of the MF and Slave I fly-by be cut out if I remember(because it wasn't realistic at all)? In that case the original music could be restored as it originally was in the movie before the DVD (even in the SE VHS it was like the GOUT, the DVD screwed it all up).

no, it will be different though. the falcon will be a lot further away from Slave 1 and you may even see Slave 1 jump to lightspeed, but not sure about that yet.

Pretty late to the party, but I just had this idea last night (and it takes me forever to make stuff like this):

Love that. funny enough i was watching airplane in HD the other night. just love those films

Anything that ady can add/enhance to this shot maybe is to add some more blues and lights to show that its a usual sunset walk until lando's call.

I think the shot is just fine the way it is. Your shadows hace also obscured some of the details, the people are now harder to see.

i'm sorry AxiaEuxine, but are you blind? the 2004 shot is all one colour, and it was never that way in the 1997 SE. another casualty of the botched colouring of the 2004 transfer.

I've completed that shot just after x-mas, so i'll post that as one of the screenshots so you can see my take on it.

teasers coming in about 5 mins.

Love this, so beautiful! Hey Ady do you ever look at the scripts to see if there are any visual descriptions that were never fully implemented into the final movie that you could bring to life? I bring this up because I was looking for quotes about Cloud City and found this in the script:

EXTERIOR: BESPIN SURFACE -- MILLENNIUM FALCON

It is down on the gaseous planet. Huge billowing clouds
form a canyon as the ship banks around them, heading toward
the system's Cloud City.
Suddenly, two twin-pod cloud cars appear and move toward
the Falcon. The cloud cars draw up alongside the starship.

After I read that I remembered that shot above and thought how perfectly that fit the description for the earlier scene.

i haven't got the Star Wars scripts unfortunately but i would be interesting to read the descriptions for the scenes.

Darth Solo said:

I love the whole feel of this shot. It looks more realistic and moody, and less erm, well, fantasy idealistic. It also sets up the darker tone the storyline takes from that point.

Its unfortunate that you have have to scrap work youve already spent days modifying, but its great to see your so commited to giving the best visual experience you can give, and the fact your taking onboard our ideas in your final vision.

i'd rather work on something for weeks and scrap it because find a better way of doing it than work on a shot for weeks and add it into the move just because of the amount of time i spent on it even though it didn't look right

vaderios said:

I Like that Ady add more detail or just add the city on top ;)

The grey clouds needs a kiss of blue. just 2% of color layer

-Angel

its the same could city matte used i the one with the pod car ( i just changed the lighting on it) so the detail is already there, its just that its smaller this time around and the city is already on the top. I did try it with a bit more blue but i didn't like the look of it and i didn't feel it matched well with the previous shots. the slight yellow tint and lightness of the clouds works the best

DuTwan said:

Hey guys just wonderin two things, one is this scene gonna get redone or scrapped. Secondly has Adywan already beaten me to it lol

Its the fact of each of them has black lines round them, they seem to be a different colour to the rest of the scene and their acting unfortunately due to the fact the scene was probably not recorded on set that their acting seems fake similar to PT lmao

DuTwan said:
topdawg193 said:

^ That scene always stuck out like a sore thumb to me - not necessarily because of the matte, but because of the highly dubious acting. Do they not just explain what Leia explains to the Rebel pilots a few moments later in the film? I, personally, wouldn't mind seeing that scene axed completely - it just seems to stick out from the rest of the movie at this point, by not adding anything to the plot, and showcasing some pretty poor performances.

I totally agree with that statement, the footage itself seems to be from another movie they just inserted, just feels unnatural there.

the whole background is being redone. but there is no way i could ever get rid of this scene. i would never forgive myself that i deleted the cameo by Ralph McQuarrie. :)

Grythandril said:

However i did notice one thing.  In the scenes with the bridge and especially the rebel transporter moving away from hoth, the star destroyer in the background does not move.  It looks as though it is stuck to the starfield.  I have circled the star destroyer in question.

i noticed this problem just after i posted the clip and changed its movement on the bridge shot so it isn't static

Well you know just how bad a site is when the founder makes statements like this:

I don't understand the dislike of the change in the Greedo scene. I've never undestood it. If it hadn't been pointed out to you by other raving fans, 99% of the world would neither notice it nor care.

Lucas has been making changes since 1977. Technically the films, as they were seen in the theater, have never been released in any form. For example, the title of the first film was changed be the time it came to VHS, adding the Episode IV part.

does't he realise the EPIV title was added to the theatrical re-release when ESB came out?

but when they started saying they wouldn't buy the OOT if it came out on DVD because they're not Lucas' real vision of the movies i knew it was time for me to get out of there before i was mentally scarred for life. lol

was the version you got still as an ISO or had it been unpacked to give you the VIDEO_TS, AUDIO_TS  & DVD-ROM folders? also what version did you get. the PAL or NTSC one? Also what media and speed did you use

It was an unpacked VIDEO_TS, etc..  NTSC.  I have Verbatim DL discs, but the menu is broken even when I play the vob's directly from my PC.

Thanks!

sounds like you got the version that someone unpacked the ISO using winrar that was originally posted over at demonoid. unfortunately the way it was unpacked totally screwed one of the menu video files and the structure of the disc. why people just don't keep the ISO & MDS files intact when torrenting movies i'll never know. i had so many angry emails when this first happened even though it through no fault of mine.

I'll see if i can find my original fix for this issue and get back to you ASAP

Come on, Adywan. I was trying to give you my perspective on the sequence you redid in the most mature way I could, cause you said you like mature feedback. However, I don't find your response mature in how yock me as someone who doesn't know his Star Wars and 'lol' in my face in front of everyone here. And why should I re-watch Return of the Jedi? I'm watching the Empire Strikes Back here. And yes, I've seen Return of the Jedi, and for all intents and purposes, it is not The Empire Strikes Back in a lot of ways. This is not a critique based on how it compares with the entire saga, but based on what I'm seeing.

You're a smart person Adywan and I know you know a lot about Star Wars. And while I do not approve of some of the various changes you do to the movies, I do understand and respect the reasons on why you do them (well, from now on). Just please don't 'lol' me, it's not cool.

this is the main problem with forums in that it is impossible to know just how exactly a post is meant to come across. It was meant in a jovial kind of way and not meant to be insulting, but since we lost the smilies i always put "lol" at the end when it is meant in a light hearted way and not to mock the person i was replying to. I apologise if you took it that way

Well, I guess it all boils down to one's interpretation on 'why' the Star Destroyer was just standing there in the first place. When the commander is informed that the rebel ships are trying to escape, he didn't say "Arm the turbo lasers and prepare to destroy them!", he said "Good, our first catch of the day". And since the Star Destroyer wasn't shooting at them, it's a pretty logical conclusion that they were planning on capturing the ships with their tractor beams. Kind of like how the Star Destroyer at the end of the movie wasn't firing on the Falcon when it was getting it's Tractor Beam ready.

The same reason that Tie fighters are firing at the falcon. Its all about disabling the ship(s). like the Tantive thing.

-Angel

i agree. it obviously seems that the stardestroyers can't lock their tractor beam onto a moving object so have to disable it first. It happened with the Tantive IV in ANH. they had to disable it first. same with the transports, and as there are no TIEs to do that job in that scene it is logical that the stardestroyers would fire upon the ships.

well i guess you need to go and rewatch ROTJ then because many shots in the sapeAnd I think billing that effects sequence as having "no single focus in that scene" is disingenuous. I cannot contemplate the folks over at ILM saying "We're making an effect shot with no focus point". I don't know any FX team that has ever made a visual effects shot that didn't have a focus point.

Well i think you need to go back and rewatch ROTJ then because the space battel has many shots where there is no single focus point. in these shots there are many focus points.lol

rlockhart said:

So, does that mean it will be footage we have not seen at all yet ?

well almost all the footage i've shown so far has had some form tweaking or completely redone since they were released so there will be a difference in the existing footage. It's just that i have some specific footage i want for the trailer and i haven't begun work on those shots just yet

Jeyl said:

Nice work on the new Cloud City shot, but you think you can gray out the front clouds a little bit? It looks like the front cloud layer is getting more light than the clouds that are in front of the sun. It's almost like it's getting light from a different sun altogether that isn't setting.

this is something that has always bugged me about bespin. does it have 1 or 2 suns? look at the scene where the falcon first approaches cloud city. first the sun is behind/ to the left of them then its in front of them but the 2 positions of the sun are consistent so maybe there is 2 suns after all.  in the end it all just ends up that i think the clouds look better lighter in the foreground. i did try it with the clouds darker but it just didn't look right at all and didn't have the effect that i was after and the background clouds were perfect especially when, towards the end of the shot, you see the sun poking out from behind the city

well some bad news. even though the file sizes report in windows to be exactly the same , azureus won't accept it saying it doesn't match :(

edit: actually ripping it from a burned dvd of the iso i posted to usenet only the MDS is unacceptable. it seems to be accepting the iso. i just  replaced the iso file created by the torrent, did a force recheck of the files, let the torrent download the MDS and it all seems to be working

i can only help seed for a few hours because i need to start getting this thing up on rapidshare, but at least it will give a little boost

I really don't like seeing the screen. The reason you see so many screens in the PT is because Lucas now thinks we're all so stupid that we have to be shown everything or we won't get it. He made the PT for 5 year olds.

We learn everything we need to from what Han tells Leia in that scene. There's no need to cut to something new when the scene is between the characters. Despite what Lucas think, CG is not a character.

Call me a frickin' 5 year old then.

well to be honest Sevb32, that's exactly the age you seem to be acting over this damn display issue.  And saying that you should become a yes man because people have actually respected my decision not to do anything to that scene, yet you still have to constantly go on about it and throw your toys out of the pram, just portrays a childish behaviour even more. I don't want to surround myself with yes-men and if i didn't want to take suggestions and criticisms then i would never have started the revisited threads in the first place. my mind has been changed about ideas several times but at least the majority of the members have enough about them to respect me when i say that my decision i final  whether they like it or not.

this kind of petty stuff just clogs up the thread and can cause me to miss some posts because i get fed up of hearing the same things over and over again.  From now on dicks will be put on my ignore list so i can concentrate on the important discussions going on in here (which i would say 99% always is).

Just please have a bit of maturity and let it rest. anyone that goes on the ignore list also goes from the credits. But this won't happen for just any small thing so don't worry about that.

Sumatra was 100% correct when he described the PT having to show everything to explain what's going on and i have said this myself.  The PT talked down to its audience, alienating most fans older than pre-teen, but this is a discussion for another thread in a few years. lol

Jeyl said:

I'd be much happier living with the holo display than the redone Rebel Transport that escapes from Hoth. That has all sorts of 'focus distracting' elements thrown into it that I'm surprised we even saw the Ion bolts at all.

ok well i'm going to reply to this one.

lets break it down shall we between the two scenes....

Hoth escpae.

the rebel transport and two x-wings escape from the planet, head directly towards a stardestroyer that just sits there and practically waits to get blasted so the rebels can escape. Now , adding a few lasers coming from the stardestroyer and having one of the xwings destroyed makes perfect sense and boosts the peril that the rebels are in. it isn't "focus distracting" as you say because there was no single focus in that scene.

Millennium Falcon holo /cutaway display.

Han and Leia in the falcons cockpit figuring out what their next move is. they are viewing an out of shot display as han scans through navigation charts and picks out bespin. here all we need to know is in the conversation and the focus should be on the interaction between Han and Leia.

Adding a cut away shot of the display - this splits the scene up and does ruin its flow. Plus there is no shots of the display at high enough res for this to work for a 720p release
Adding a holo diplay in front of the characters -  your focus is taken away from the two main characters interaction. Viewers will pay more attention to what is being displayed than what they should be focusing on. And the arguments that it doesn't distract just doesn't ring true. if it isn't distracting then you aren't looking at the display which means it proves it doesn't need to be there in the first place.

now i can't explain all that any more clearer than i have so can that be the end of it now please.

please keep the suggestions, photo and video mock-ups coming. i'm not stubborn headed and do listen and look at ever one. for instance just recently it was suggested that when Luke approaches Bespin that it should be later in the day because the sun is setting shortly after. Now i had spent 5 days working on  the new moving  matte shot of Luke's approach and had just finished it and i loved it until i saw this suggestion.  i've now gone back and had to change most of the elements and start from scratch because i like this idea. luckily i could reuse all the tracking work i had originally done and have now completed it (minus the xwing which needs to have a new element added) but the finished shot is 1000% better than it originally was.

Hi all,

Ady, I'm pretty sure I sent you an e-mail of thanks when I got the ANH:R PAL DVD-9 version from you (I sent you the blank disks). If I didn't I apologize profusely!!

I've been away from home most of the time since receiving them, but I'm finally getting some time to myself this weekend, so plan to see about putting the result up on Usenet.

Never tried to create a Torrent before, but, if I succeed, I'll see about putting it up on Mininova ... OK?

Not at all sure about Rapidshare though ... do I need a user account to do it?

... then I need to see about how much upload my ISP allows !!!

Watch this space guys and gals.

no, it wasn't aimed at you cjtc. these discs i sent out a while before yours which is why i had no DL discs left. I did receive your email and i appreciate the fact that you took time out to let me know you got the discs which many never bothered.

I might try contacting boon to see how to get this up on rapidshare

Its annoying to me, coming from PAL land myself, that the PAL DVD-9 version seems to have disappeared into obscurity. once it was posted to usenet it just vanished.  I'll see what i can do to get this thing out there
