Nice. The color in the oficer is too saturated.

have to call you on this one. as you can see from this earlier shot the colour of the uniform now matches. for some reason they made the uniform light blue for that extra SE shot.

all of the SE additions as they escape bespin will be removed. It will be returned to how it was pre-SE. As was mentioned the music score was butchered and we don't need to see another platform shot. Damn Lucas and his sudden obsession with landing platforms. lol. vader sounds much more menacing with the way he says "bring my shuttle". We don't need to see the shuttle on the landing platform. Why does GL suddenly think so amny things need so much explanation? The "bring my shuttle" line explains how he got from bespin to the Executor so do we need to see the shuttle waiting for him or his journey to the executor? No.

i actually haven't done much to the Emperor since the trailer. I've been trying out different techniques to try and match the ROTJ elements with the movement of the 2004 version. its a bloody hard task but one thing i have accomplished t being able to have the side shot of the Emperor when he says " He could destroy us" which as darth editous pointed out is missing from the 2004 version. I have eve managed to have the lips sync perfectly. The trailer will have a tweaked version of the Emperor hologram but t won't be the final version because there is just too much work left to do on it. As for having glowing eyes then that is a definite no . the same goes for changing the angle of the background and adding smoke or other things. this scene rally doesn't need anything else added to it. The holograms in the PT are going to be downgraded and visually match the OT, maybe even lower tech because after all the Pt shouldn't be so much more hi-tech than the OT when its set in the past. And the " its a much more prosperous time" excuse is just lame. Our world has been in much more prosperous times but our technology is more advanced now than it ever was. cockpits, displays and even some ships will have a complete OT overhaul in the PT

I'm actually struggling to find the pics for tonights previews. I've shown so much already i'm trying to keep a few surprises for the movies release, so don't expect some huge revelation shots this time.

I'm fine with the scale it's the sticky out bit that's infront of Ben that seems to throw it for me and it's not visable in the comparison shots (and it's just one niggle in a greatly improved scene) I couldn't illustrate my point without posting an image so sorry if this comes as a spoiler of sorts, the scene is worth donating to get a preview just to see Yoda's amazingly enhanced facial movements in all their glory.

if you look closely at the comparison pics you can see the "sticky out bit" through Obi-Wan's robes. To place Obi-Wan behind the mound that Yoda sits on to improve the scale i had to keep that bit in because it is noticeably attached to the mound as he fades into view.

not sure what you mean vaderios

Even i agree with you that your version has more tones than GOUT as the comparisson pics i see from 005, but it start to feel like stage/set again. The blue color in SE,yes its awfull, but in gives a more natural look. Im not sayin to go back to SE just add a bit cyan/blue to show that is some alive there to make contrast with the Xwing grey color and show that is night. Its all about elements and how they popup.

-Angel

i'm starting to think you ahve an obsession with the colour blue. ;)

it doesn't need the blue tint to make it look like its at night. the surroundings are illuminated by the x-wing which has a strong white light.  go outside at night and illuminate sections with a powerful white light and you will see that there is no blue tint because the light, unless it has a daylight bulb, doesn't reproduce daylight colours. now the background becomes more illuminated when Obi-Wan appears and there is a hint of blue reflection from Obi-Wan's ghost.

Don't forget i am working with a colour calibrated monitor whereas most consumer monitors have standard settings or usually 3 user settings: cool, warm & normal. warm and normal strip subtle blue tints and cool gives everything a blue tint. my intention all along was to return the colouring of the HD transfers back to what Star wars originally looked like before the disastrous colouring done in 2004.  i really hate this modern colouring done for movies and photographs. either everything looks very cool with a ot of blue tones or warm with brown tones. It seems that film-makers have forgotten what natural colours are. the Ot were made before this fad and they have now been returned to the old school colouring and the PT will be getting the same treatment.

Is it just me, or does the background behind Ben look grainy in ady's edit compared to the GOUT and DVD screencaps?  I'm just going by your comparison shots, 005, so I'm not sure if that's just image compression issues, the quality of the clip ady sent out, etc.

you will see more grain in my version because i am working off the Hd sources. the GOUT & 2004 DVD's have a lower resolution and a lot of the grain was lost due to this and also compression. the colour correction has also enhanced the grain slightly but i can live with this if t means losing the blue tint. also when resizing it to the DVD resolution it seems that my version is retaining more detail than the 2004 DVD

I couldn't help but notice that the background to the bonus scene was a little monochrome will this be adjusted in the final version?

The stump that Obi-wan is behind is a bit odd too (he is a ghost it might work if he is infront of it and we can see through it, perhaps? Or maybe it could be adjusted to look a little less cut around).

Ben Stump

Yoda is amazing but in long shots the Obi-Wan element seems to missing some frames (is this temporary?).

Otherwise great, great work nice to see Ben not floating in a void for the first time.

the background looks fine to me. it shouldn't be filled with colour due to the lighting. It has always looked that way. in fact there are more colour tones in my version than even the gout which many shots the background is plain blue.

Obi-Wan has to be placed behind the stump because of both scale and a few close up shots of Obi-wan and yoda, otherwise the scale is thrown out and he returns to tiny Ben or to keep the scale Obi-Wan would be missing his head for these shots.

Not sure what you mean by missing frames though because there are no missing frames

this scene is complete and i'm happy with it there is only so much i can do with the sources i have available and i just had to get rid of "tiny Ben"

Yeah, it sounds like your drive is FAT32 - in order to change it, you need to reformat your hard drive, which means erasing everything.

no you don't have to do that. you can use a program like partition magic to change the formatting from FAT32 to NTFS without losing anything. All it does is change the file system so all your files aren't changed.

When Cloud City is revealed, there is a pod car flying away from it towards us.  We then cut to the SE shot following a pod car flying through the city, almost giving a continuity problem as it feels as if they should be the same vehicle.  Fortunately the shot is a temp, and the city looks very good in the shot.

Keep going Ady.  Awesome work.

I suggested earlier to just reverse the course of the cloud car so its heading away from us and towards the city, so that the next shot of the fly through is a sort of continuation of the previous shot.  Even if it isn't the same cloud car, visually it would flow better.

the main problem with having the cloud car flying towards the city is the we have 3 consecutive shots of a ship flying away from the camera. First Luke's X-wing which wipes to the shot of cloud city then straight into the fly-though scene with the cloud car. the middle shot really needs to be different or the repetitiveness is glaring. In the clip i did put that it was a temp shot and i always miss the original wipe shot with the cloud car (don't get me started on that refinery again. ;) lol). i have a few ideas about what to do with the shot but just need to do a few tests first.

For the record I have made my donation, and I have done so for the benefit of this project. And I am excited to enjoy some of the fruits of that by watching the new clip (which I have not recieved a link to yet).

So in saying that, I'm not speaking about myself, but I have a question.

To be blunt, when will those of us who are not donating get a chance to see the clip? And also, how far do you intend to go with this "donate to watch" sceme?

I don't mean to be rude, I'm just bieng curious.

I will say that I have my own issues with "how far is too far" when dealing with these kinds of projects, my own included. I of course have only good will towards yours.

well here is what i originally wrote

adywan said:

so i had an idea as a little incentive for anyone that was thinking of donating: anyone that donates between now and 14th may will get to view the completed trailer a week before its release date along with a brand new clip that will not be seen until the edit is released.

as you can see i stated that anyone thinking of donating and didn't intend this to be taken as anything like "donate to watch".  all i intended it to be was a little thank you and i did this with ANH:R but no one saw it that way last time. i'm not doing the edits for anything other than my love of doing these. But this one is costing me a fortune and i just would never be able to get this done without help because i am unemployed. all the donations go directly to the purchase of materials needed. i spend most of my day, every day working on this project and without help i would be working on this one until 2011 probably while i can get enough money to get the materials needed. everyone that donated knows that this doesn't mean that they will be sent a copy of the final movie and that has always been made clear because the final release will always be free. the problem is now that it has been made to look like people have been paying to see a clip when that was never the case and this could now get this project shut down when all it was intended for was a thank you

now the main reason i started giving people a chance to see a clip or trailer earlier if they donated was down to what hapened with the X0 project. many people donated towards that project and it just disappeared. i didn't want people to worry that if they donate then the project would just never happen in the end.

now i don't know why you haven't received the link to the clip because i have sent it to everyone who donated to the email address they donated through since i announced this.

Check this out, if Adywan ever needed some new shots of Yoda for TESB:R he should ask this guy for use of his Yoda puppet, superb work !! Mind you, this guy is probably in the US and Ady's here in the UK, oh well !!

http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=61797&page=8

My brain just exploded out of my eyesockets.  That is about the most amazing reproduction of a prop I have ever seen!

That said, I don't know where additional Yoda footage is needed in ESB.  It might be interesting as a 'Force ghost' in some radical ROTJ edit.  But that is a topic for somewhere else.

I think this prop would be quite excellent as far as replacement shots of Yoda in the eventual PREQUEL:REVISITED series.

yeh, that Yoda puppet is amazing

Definitely not out of line, everyone can agree it's not a contest.  I'd just feel most comfortable making a donation I can afford somewhat relative to the total $ Ady needs (if he wants to give out that info)

Along the same lines, is there any donation that would be considered too small, Ady, or is anything and everything helpful? Also, is there any way of donating that minimizes a Paypal cut taken out, and maximizes the funds given to you?

Take care,
Sojourn

anything and everything is helpful. paypal is the easiest even though paypals cut is a pain in the ass because i can keep all the funds in one place and also because a lot of the materials i'm using i can get cheaper on ebay so paypal is ideal.

Besides, you could still have the siren bit... <:)

That is a good idea ;)

If Ady likes this idea, I'm currently playing Jedi Outcast and there is a nice Klaxon noise as the Doomgiver falls apart.

no, i don't like the idea of adding a siren. the scene doesn't need it. he gave the announcement, which would have been heard city wide, so the need for a siren to signal the evacuation seems pointless.

sgdelta1771 said:

I decided to create my own concept which mixes the two versions:

Note that I based it on the original GOUT one.  In this variant, most of the original lighting parameters are kept and the new building Leia is in is now smaller and somewhat more colour-matched, making the entire scene look as if it's higher from the surface of the city and giving back that sense of perspective while keeping some new 2004 SE elements.

very nice mock-up. the main problem i have with that shot is the previous fly-through scene which would mean having to do a lot of work to match the colouring of the buildings.

havoline said:

I have a question, and this is going back to fixing errors originally made and not fixed by ILM and George Lucas, but half of the blaster battler towards when Leia, Chewbacca, the droids, and Lando get back on the MF there are things that I hope can be fixed.   When they are shooting the blasters if you look carefully you shells be expelled from the weapons like if they were real pistols.   I hope that will be fixed.  This not fixed in A New Hope Revisted, but perhaps no one saw it before. You can see it when Leia is shooting the stormtroopers when she is with Luke.

And Adywan the images that you posted are fantastic (why ILM didnt do it scares me alot).  There is no reason to nit pick anything in my opinion.   Cant wait for further updates and the trailer.

yeh, this was discussed when i was doing ANH:R. the shell casings are virtually invisible and have never bothered me so i decided not to do anything about them.

well things are slowing down with the edit at the moment. I'm concentrating on the trailer and building the new sets and models but funds have now totally dried up and i still have only half the materials needed to make all this stuff. i still haven't been able to get the finemolds falcon and then there's the styrene, fibre glass and resin amongst other stuff needed. i get some bloody stupid ideas and building all these things i think could well be one of them. But at the end of the day it will be something that enhances ESB:R

so i had an idea as a little incentive for anyone that was thinking of donating: anyone that donates between now and 14th may will get to view the completed trailer a week before its release date along with a brand new clip that will not be seen until the edit is released.

If this is well into the evacuation of Cloud City, yeah maybe we would see a LOT more ships (I understand this is a still frame, so again it could be out of context) evacuating the city, but more to the point - shouldn't the building lights be off due to the city being shut down?

Maybe we could see buildings in the process of shutting down and add a faint siren (or multiple far-off sirens to emphasize different sectors of the city being warned simultaneously) to the background noise...

there are a lot more ships but its hard to see them on the still frame at low res. also they aren't shutting the city down but are making a hasty evacuation. i think that turning out the lights as they leave would be the last thing on their mind;)

I don't know what's up with the red tone I know the point is to show sunset but has anyone gotten the impression that they over do it? a good rule of design is to about "flattening" the image with the same color all over the place, some little contrast, some different color here or there to balance things out, but there are some Bespin shots that are just overly reddish.....as a side note.

its actually only a problem with the 2004 DVds because the original '97 SE doesn't suffer with the " one colour" syndrome as bad

Very good ady!

The only thing that bugs me a bit its the third image (when leia is running to falcon)

The light comes from different direction than the previous shot so the falcon should follow the light direction.. Also id like to see some more blue as the sunset comes to explain the blue sublight on the platform.

vaderios said:

Here is what i was talking about.

Im not saying that ady's pic is bad. still i like a wip pic that he has post when the stormies are firing (previous shot of this scene^ that has a part of blue sky)

So i think is an enhance version of the Original matte and its not create any continuity problems with the colors when luke is on the antenna. ( when luke is in the antenna it supposed the sun should be in the same level or below him. see one of my previous mockups)

That is my 2 euros ;)

-Angel

don't forget the shot you mention was only a WIP when i posted the image. the sky was also a temp one. most of the skies from my original posted screenshots of bespin have now been completely changed to improve continuity. even the shot where they are running around the corner on the balcony has a completely new sky. there is no blue sky in the shot of the stormtroopers that comes before the platform shot of leia running to the falcon. the skies now match.

RoccondilRinon said:

Do my eagle eyes spot some fleeing ships in the distance in shot #3?

yes, you are correct

Bingowings said:

As always a dramatic improvement.

Removing the roof cage makes all the sense in the world but (switching on rod for your back mode) these buildings still look rather fake:

Bespin Towers

They might be improved a little by borrowing some detail inspiration from modern Arabic buildings:

the main problem with doing anything to the background buildings is matching the previous shot. its would be very difficult for me to add anything to the buildings because of the movement, so i'm probably going to leave them as they are

there's another that i just can't fix either and that's a flipped shot of chewie and R2 as they run away from the stormtroopers on bespin. oh well. :)

What's the issue with flipping the shot back?

flipping the shot would mess with the direction in which they are running

ImperialFighter said:

Adywan, just wanted to re-suggest these specific points above, that may have got missed in a lengthy post I made a while back.  I still think they are worth considering if you did miss them.  Not a biggie at the end of the day, just a few thoughts on it still.

The removal of the top of the structure was mentioned by a few at the time, and is a welcome improvement for the sake of continuity with the interior ceiling shots.  Great to see you did this tweak.

no, i didn't miss it. its just that the whole matte shot is a nightmare to try and explain any sort of continuity with the building as seen from the outside.

one thing i did notice about the SE replacement mate si that, just below Leias window, there is a doorway. now given the scale of leia then that must be one tiny door. if your overweight you'd never fit through it. plus in the previous shot you see a lift going up the building. its so small it must either be for one person or midgets. i may still decide to completely redo the matte but i think the only way around it is to build a physical model of the upper part of the building so i can zoom in close enough and retain the detail and keep Leia as the main focus. And with having so much to build already i may not be able to do it.

Jedi Dark Knight said:

I like your night sky Vaderios. Hasn't anyone noticed something?: the blast is interrumpted as if smudged (sp?) by a finger, it's the same in the original shots, but the enhacement makes it look as if someone swiped the finger over the laser, look at it.

doubleofive said:

You may be right 005, it is shaped as an R2 Unit, but you don't see it, maybe a mistake in compositing?

05 is correct the bolt is behind R2 and you can clearly see R2 heading for the falcon in that scene so i can't see why you think it is a mistake in compositing.

Quick question for you ady... Leia's apartment: judging by the first pic, you've decided against changing the look of the exterior building in order to jive with the interior layout?  Or have you altered the interior?  Or... is this another one of those things that has never really bothered you?

BTW... where'd you get the buidings used in the Cloud City background in the landing platform shots?  They look terrific.

i tried a few variations, making the window smaller, adding and apartment next to leias, amongst others others but nothing really worked out. the focus was always taken off leia so i just went for removing the upper part of the apartment roof to fix at least one continuity problem. i guess its one continuity error i'll just have to live with. there's another that i just can't fix either and that's a flipped shot of chewie and R2 as they run away from the stormtroopers on bespin. oh well. :)
