DVD rip looks crappy when imported into After Effects
Time

Well the problem you're having doesn't have anything to do with file size. I can import a 1080p lossless avi without any problems in After Effects and the file size of that is a few hundred GB. Does the VOB/Mpeg2 file you are importing have the AC3 audio track intact? If so then that will cause you problems. You need to demux the Vob file into the separate streams and just import the video (sometimes you will need to remux it to an mpeg2 video only file first because after effects can be a bit picky with m2v files).

From the look of your screengrab it looks like the header of the Mpeg2 file could be screwed up so demuxing then remuxing would rewrite the header. I take it you are working with an NTSC source right? Have you removed the 2:3 pulldown on the video before converting it to a MOV? Plus i wouldn't recommend using a DV codec for your project, especially if you are going to be doing multiple renders (colour correction etc). You will lose quality and it isn't the best codec to start off with. Try using a lossless codec like lagarith (unfortunately not available for mac by the looks of it) or huffYUV (although premier does have a few issues with that codec). Your best bet would be to google a lossless codec for the mac, but be warned, you will need a lot of hard drive space ( about 100gb for each render of a DVD source). But this way you won't lose any quality on each generation of the encode. Plus, if you are doing colour correction, then a lossless codec is a must. The last thing you want is to introduce extra video noise or artefacts caused by a lossy codec like DV

Unfortunately you are using a mac and i have no knowledge on what programs you can use to do all of this

Was that that Millennium Falcon model you bought being used there? The shot looks fantastic!

No, It's a CG Falcon. Some shots just cannot be done with a physical model. The Fine Molds falcon will be used for static shots, and will be used more for ROTJ:R

After a lot of pestering i've given in and will let you see the full res version. It is far from finished yet so don't judge it too harshly.

That's not going to be the reveal of Cloud City, right? We'll see a farther shot of the whole thing first?

No, there is the shot of the city in the distance before it still, although it will be a different shot than the original. I had to lose the great sun glare shot from the distant one for continuity so i placed a nice glare replacement shot in this one instead

Theres one thing i could never understand what they were thinking in the SE, which can be clearly be seen thanks to these comparisons. In the SE the ships seem to fly over the city at the end instead of down towards it like it did pre-SE. Just look how high above the city the ships are in the SE shot. Then adding the new cockpit shot that follows shows the ship in a lower position which matches the GOUT. Total cock-up on the part of ILM there

Hi there,

Don't really want to trawl through 651 pages, so sorry if it's already been mentioned, but will it be possible to show and/or hear the snowspeeder(s?) being destroyed by the probe droid, as originally written? This will then make Han's 'It isn't friendly' line make sense and explain why Rieekan sends two other speeders to cover the area.

Inserting anything like that wouldn't work with the way the scene is edited. You need to hear the probe droids message otherwise 3P0's line about "...It could be an Imperial code" wouldn't make sense. There just isn't the space to add anything i'm afraid.

Anyway, here's a little teaser of something i'm working on right now :)

Verbatim is the best way to go.

I've found Verbatim writable optical media to be reliably crap. The dyes are too dark for most players.

I've never heard of that problem. The dyes are as dark as the Taiyo Yuden DVD-R's that are said to be the most compatible media on the market and i've never found a player that refuses to play discs i have burned using either one of those media. I've never had any problem with compatibility ever with a correctly burned Verbatim or TY. The only times i've ever heard anyone saying that the verbatim discs won't play is either when they have burned a DL on too high a speed, which you should never do or the ones that are manufactured in India, and that is a problem with the quality of the dye and not the darkness. PLus some people don't bother to update the firmware on their DVD-RW drives so when a new version of the dye comes out the burner craps out with the discs

well, I don't have a dual disc burner, i was relying on my friend to do it. we downloaded the files via the torrent on demonoid. he said everytime he tried burning them to disc, he got errors while burning (on a pc)

for the heck of it, i took the files and tried burning them to a regular disc on my mac at work. i "opened" the rar file and got the corrected TS files. then i dragged both the original TS file and the corrected on into toast to burn the dvd.

Well you should have got an .ISO file when downloading. You say that you tried burning the files when in fact you should have just burned the .ISO. When you say you opened the "rar" i take it you meant the "ISO". Never unpack and iso file using winrar or other unzipping program. This caused problems with the disc when someone uploaded the unpacked folders to Demonoid and used winrar to unpack them. It caused me a huge nightmare trying to fix their mistake, especially with people contacting me saying i'd created a crap DVD that didn't work. If the one you got off demonoid is the unpacked version with the Audio_TS & Video_ts folders then just scrap that and head over to fanedit.info to download the correct ISO file from rapidshare . You can download both the single and dual layer versions from there

If you don't have a dual layer burner (yes that thing must be an antique) then just get DVDShrink and open the ISO file in that. Make sure all the subtitle and audio tracks are selected before shrinking the image to fit onto a single layer DVD. Now select the "create iso" as your output format in DVDshrink then burn the iso using IMGburn. Then try playing the burned dvd in your pc. If everything is fine on your pc but you are having the audio stuttering problem then i guess you have the NTSC and one of only a small handful of DVD players that doesn't like the AC3 audio track and it won't matter if someone burns you a copy because you will have the same problems.

As for the colour of TIE fighters, I must say it is painfully obvious that the blue colour is the bluescreen leaking, in the GOUT you can clearly see the colour flickering all over the place with plain grey underneath. But that's not to say a blue colour is necessarily bad. I think the slightly blue tint of light in nearly all space shots is heavily part of the expression of the film. And so colour corrections like the one vaderious posted doesn't sit too well with me. You are removing what appears to be a conscious effort to tint the shot.

LexX said:

There are blue and white TIEs: http://www.theforce.net/swtc/exhibit/tie.html

Having actually seen the TIEs that were used in the film i can confirm that LexX is correct. In ESB the TIEs used were a light blue/ grey colour. But they oversaturated the blues when compositing for most shots, but left them a grey colouring for a lot of others. The Executor model is also grey/white but that was recoloured to blue for ESB too. If you check out the Executor shot of Vaders shuttle approaching it they added for the SE you can see its correct colouring. Another SE cock-up where they forgot to recolour it to match the existing shots, which i don't have to worry about since that scene is gone now anyway.

The TIEs are closer to their actual model colour in ROTJ, but because the TIE's used for ANH were white and grey i will be keeping the continuity of this colouring for the rest of the saga, but the bombers and interceptors will have the slight blue tinting to match the original models

I would also like to bring to attention fixing Vader's line "Apology accepted, Captain Needa." so it sounds like Vader.

ThiefCobbler4ever said:

I should've been more specific. I meant to say that Vader's voice needs to sound like James Earl Jones for the "Apology accepted, Captain Needa." line. The line as we've all heard it sounds like an Ian McDirmid sound-alike (to me, anyway).

I don't see a problem with that line at all. It sounds perfectly like JEJ to me

DarkJedi3P0 said:

Ive got an idea that was already confirmed but i feel it should be considered, unless you disagree that is :)

anyways, what if there was the option of keeping in Temuera Morrison's 2004 Voice in the ESB:R, but restoring Jason Wingreen if there were to be say a ESB:R Purist Version.

To be honest I prefer Wingreen, but Morrison's Voiceover did sort of tie the two trilogies together a little better. and also will there be a possibility of a Purist ESB:R? :)

There will be no "purist" version of ESB:R. Changing Bobas voice is something that never should have been done and Morrison's Boba voice will never appear in any of my edits. It doesn't need to be changed to tie in with the PT as all will be revealed when i get to the PT:R edits. The PT should be changed to fit in with the OT and not the other way around

Hey, Ming. Welcome to the boards :)

I haven't had chance to read through all the new stuff yet but i'll answer a few that i've seen so far...

Jetrell Fo said:

The only issue I as a newb could see in the trailer was that it might be nice to get a better coloring/shading on the Falcon on the Bespin Landing pad when they enter the city with Lando. It looks a bit out of focus and no where near as clear as it does while it's taking off in a hurry.

It should be slightly out of focus in that shot because the focus is on the foreground characters and not on the ship. The main sections of the ship are the same they were in the original so the focusing is exactly the same

vaderios said:

Coming back around still even ady posted previous shots that indicating the falcon arrives at sunset still like the idea of sunrise :)

It's definitely going to be sunrise in my version.

Looks very cool... although I've always liked the fact Cloud City looked a dot in the distance. It's reminiscent of the Death Star in the distance as the Millenium Falcon approaches in A New Hope... "he's heading for that small moon!"... it's this small object in the distance that you only get a sense of the massive scale and detail of once you get up close... and boy does Cloud City do that!

That was a nice 'Bespin' shot vaderios, but I must agree with Vincent's comment here. The original 'sunlit' reveal of the small, distant 'Cloud City' was always one of my favourite establishing 'beauty' shots in the movie, I have to say.

I just wonder if and how Adywan will tweak it in any way....

And I agree with the way doubleofive recently described how he always saw the Falcon's arrival as being at 'sunset'....with the events of Leia pacing in the apartment coming during the next day, and everything else taking place up until the Falcon blasted off in the evening.... Interesting that Adywan saw the 'Falcon' as arriving at a 'sunrise', and all the following events taking place on the same day up until the evening....

It will all still look glorious I'm sure.

doubleofive said:

As others have said, there's something about the original shot, with the sun breaking through the clouds to reveal the city in the distance... I wouldn't want to lose it.

Unfortunately that reveal shot is going. The sun is behind the city whereas in every other shot the sun is facing the city (as has been discussed before) and you can see from the new close-up city matte as the falcon approaches the sun will be facing the city. So this shot has to go as it stands now. Even though i have always loved that shot myself it just doesn't work within the edit now but i will be replacing it with a new reveal shot which will still have the city in the distance

Oldfan said:

Myself, I like the idea of the Falcon arriving at sunset. I think that because that has always been how it was, it will feel very strange for me to adapt to sunrise instead. It is not only a change in the visuals in this case, but a change to the actual timing of events.

I'm pretty sure that it was always meant to be sunrise when they arrived. Just take a look at the GOUT. When they leave the platform and walk down the stairs the windows clearly shows it is daytime. It almost looks like there was a section edited out between those 2 shots. Talking of which i found a very interesting photo the other day. When they are going for the dinner when they turn the corner there was originally another shot in between which would explain the continuity problem with their positions. They originally turned and walked across an uncovered walkway.

Bingowings said:

I have the strongest possible suspicion that the elevator will not only remain but will corrected in the shots it's missing at great effort and with great effect.

The window will be seen in all shots that it was missing in the SE

Here's the complete file name I got:

Star.Wars.Episode.IV.A.New.Hope-Revisited.2008.DVDRip.mkv

It had all the changes Adywan mentioned. As I said, it played fine in QuickTime after getting Perian. But the latest attempts at watching the movie plays in a dubbed version.

try using vlc mediaplayer to or media player classic play mkv's. it sounds like it may have multiple audio tracks and quicktime has switched default tracks

Interesting though because i didn't realise that there was a mkv version available. Did your version have the flipper or the hand severed in the cantina?

THE STAR WARS SAGA - 1080P AVCHD DVD-9 for PS3 & Blu-Ray players - Episodes 1, 4 & 5 available now

Have a look if your Verbatim states the country of manufacture. If they state India then they are pretty useless and they cannot be guaranteed as being reliable like the proper verbatim ones that are manufactured in Singapore. Burn the disc at the lowest speed, which is usually 2.4x. Anything higher can result in a bad burn. It doesn't matter that you could burn at a higher speed with one disc because, if they are originating from India, the rest of the batch could be screwed.

Could you burn the image on a different computer using IMgburn?

Hope you get it sorted.

How can you trust only one computer to keep your most precious datas... ?! I can't understand.

I originally had them on my computer's hard drive and an external. The last week of last semester, my computer's logic board took a dive, and I had to get it fixed by Apple who, in their infinite wisdom, decided to wipe my hard drive completely. So there goes one copy.

For some stupid reason, I never copied the mixes back over from my external to my computer's HDD. This came back to bite me in the ass yesterday when said external decided to just stop working. I also lost all the files to my nearly-completed Star Wars edit when this happened.

And Moth3r, if you could RapidShare the 77 mono/stereo mixes and the '93 mixes and PM me the links, that would be fantastic!

ah, it's an external drive. You may be in luck then. Is it a 3.5" external? If so then take the drive out of the external housing and pop it into either another computer or into a new external drive housing. Many times when an external drive dies it is actually the controller board in the housing that goes and the drive is fine. Even if it's a 2.5" one you can try it in a new housing (or if its a SATA drive this can be tried in a PC too)

Every external drive that died on me, and other people i know, it was the controller board in the housing that was at fault and the drive was fine, or just needed a drive scan to fix any problems.

Those are great, too. The helmet looks a bit off in the upper-right one, but to use the upper portion of the upper left one, or all of the bottom one (though that would take extraordinarily difficult cutting) could also look great.

Sorry if I'm off topic... Anybody has the red one (down) in high res... I need it (among others) for a booklet for my edit. Thanks.

Just right click on the image and select "view image" and it will show it as a 1233px × 1725px hi-res pic

Xbox 360 or PS3 - Which is better? - Advice......
Time

HotRod said:

Well, after browsing countless websites and looking round endless stores, it seems that the PS3 is the way to go.

Now all that's left is to update my TV...

...so

LCD or Plasma....which is better?? ;)

Good to hear you're going for the PS3 :) I have all 3 consoles and i refuse to pay the subscription fee for X-box live just to play online. And Sony aren't thinking of charging the PS3 owners for online access. It's just a rumour probably started by X-box fanboys. But i do play on all 3 equally and i am not a PS3 fanboy.

Now onto the TV's. Well I would never recommend a plasma to anyone. a decent LCD blows a plasma away. Most people see the TV's in a shop and funnily enough the one that usually looks the best is the one they are trying to promote. They never have the TV's set up correctly so plasmas look slightly better. but i have seen on so many plasmas what i can only describe as a dot effect on certain colours. It almost looks like the picture is a gif image. Some may not even notice this because they are used to their plasma, but its there. Watching HD looks better on a properly set up and good quality LCD too. I hate all the crap about plasma has better blacks. Well do you have prefect blacks when watching a movie at the cinema? no. But even the newer LCD's have solved that problem without causing crushed blacks. But...

Have you thought about the new LED TV's? Perfect black levels and the picture looks amazing. I saw the new LG 42" one at my local store and everything seemed so real it blew the picture on all the other sets away, including my 42" LG LCD. Fast moving objects didn't lose their sharpness in HD at all. And the TV is so ultra slim, LCD & plasmas just can't compete with this. I played about with the picture, turning off all the image enhancement stuff that is usually on by default and the picture became even better.

I would seriously think about getting one of these. It's going to make your PS3 image look so great :)
