Loving the dynamic range!
Loving the dynamic range!
It depends on where you’re looking, 4k isn’t going to be the magic number in terms of fidelity, that’s a misconception that’s often made, there’s bound to be a bottleneck somewhere.
At this point I’m unwilling to shame any restoration efforts, it takes a ton of work. I can say for sure I don’t like the 2011 blu-ray, the Disney+ colors are not a bad effort but still wrong and ultimately not worth the fidelity for the original cut which is what I grew up with and what I want.
Despecialized and 4k77 are currently both in these in between states, I’m hopeful for the future of both and was quite happy to begin with when I saw the Silver Screen Edition, now it’s all clean up. I will say it will take more than a 3.0 or 2.0 to reach Legacy heights but that all has to do with time and resources, the color efforts have come incredibly far and at worst I can handle some dirt, all the work so far into making most of those issues become minor should be commended.
Seeing teal artifacts in the whites.
Alright let me rephrase studio interference from meddling to pressure and see if we agree, in the same way that the studio put JJ under pressure in the first place with TFA to produce a script in 9 months after dropping Arndt (paraphrasing), JJ and co. were put under a similar level of pressure after Trevorrow was dropped along with his treatment, it’s a time crunch but also a creative decision. Not so much in the stereotypical way of taking some JJ master cut and unknown corporate hands chopping it to bits, but to your point JJ himself played ball in the mucking. Still it doesn’t take total conjecture to say looking at Disney’s track record you’ll find a fairly consistent hands-on approach. You can feel last minute changes in the movie just by watching it which I don’t find as consistent with JJ despite other films he’s made with arguably poor execution. Someone could possibly do a deep dive and piece together what happened behind the scenes and see where the ratio of blame lands, but probably nothing comprehensive for a few years, everyone involved keeping their cards close to the vest.
Id enjoy seeing an R rated Star Wars. Itd be a pain with all the blood simulation but i think id be pretty cool. As a kid i always liked the blood in ANH and wondered why they did away with it in the other movies. Corridor crew did some small quick vids but they were more on the ridiculous side. I later understood that the wounds were being cauterized but still. I miss the bombastic squids used in the 80’s like in Robocop haha
You know, I actually had an idea for an R-rated Star Wars, complete with sex and nudity. It’d be doable with some actors’ other works and deepfaking.
However, we have to be honest, the SW community is extremely immature and conservative about sexual material, so it would be negatively received (in public) and get a lot of spiteful attempts to stop it.
Too bad, there’s enough source material out there to make it work…maybe I should take another crack at it.
You realize that pornography and liberal sexuality is not the same thing as maturity, right? And that you’re basically taking the same stance as an adolescent?
Really happy someone else said this.
Broom Kid I remember reading your initial impression on the movie where you too felt that the final product had been mucked with to a degree that was uncharacteristic for just JJ, I’m not holding it against you but what made you change your mind?
Very slight but the blues might be taking over there, again very minor and all other changes are improvements, keep up the amazing work Dre!
I doubt nobody interfered, the end result feels very chopped and meddled with, some invisible hands were putting on the pressure, we’ll just never know to what extent.
The green may actually be more correct to source but I find the update better in virtually every way.
Which is clarified by an omniscient narrator who has been there the whole movie.
Or, about halfway through the movie, after apologizing for being late.
Since it has been said before Star Wars is R2’s story the voice we hear is later revealed to be his after a rebel inserts an “English chip” that allows the droid to finally speak outside of beeps and whistles!
If Darth Vader shouldn’t be space jesus I don’t think the emperor should have been space Voldemort who keeps coming back. I was fine enough with a Skywalker Sith lord with his wannabe ex Jedi anarchists, to me that would have been a fine evolution, we killed the big bad but there are still problems!
Course as everyone already said execution is everything, if I had the choice between an underdeveloped Palpatine or underdeveloped First Order I’d lose the order.
Most likely scenario.
Truthfully, I think the two of you have already put more thought into it than Rian Johnson ever did.
Can we be less mean?
Starkiller with total respect and sincerity I think you should reconsider how you think about yourself and making comparisons to other people, what you said earlier about viewing your friend as a best friend because he isn’t doing better than you sounds very negative. Apart from that I feel like I’m not getting the full context of the situation between your other “chad” friend, (which might be because you wouldn’t want to get into the details publicly and that’s fine) but you might want to mentally meet somewhere in the middle, maybe they went too far and bullied you, and maybe a comment made struck a nerve that made you feel a combination of jealous and insecure that runs deeper than the actual argument itself. At least you do have someone to talk to about these things who knows more about you personally that can be helpful, I just wouldn’t want you locked into this belief that you are fated to be “forever alone”.
Oh boy time for my Doctor Who opinion! The ratio of good to bad episodes for me is majority bad by a wide margin, unless you are a child I don’t think for any reasons outside of previous nostalgia or cultural connection is the show worth it. 2 good episodes out of every 50 is a waste of time.
So I haven’t seen Cowboy Bebop (yet!) or Solo, I love radical edits like Pulp Empire, would I be better off going in cold on this? Or would it be better to catch up and watch one or both in your opinion?
Definitely feels like an older franchise, if the cheesy title didn’t already give it away, I don’t think it would have survived the way it has if it was up against the blockbusters of today.
There is a benefit to structure in that it orients the storytelling and allows your fantastic world to still be understood, of course not every character or moment requires its ancient mythological analogue to count as a story, the movies aren’t just about strict adherence to formula, but those reference points are extremely reliable and both the OT and PT utilized them to form their arcs. The ST is more than just a collection of scenes, there are themes, but it feels more disjointed between films and (for me at least) it’s much harder to pin down the overall arc of the trilogy, harder still a unifying arc to the saga.
You could also say Star Wars is about good vs evil and leave it at that for a one-size-fits-all answer, I feel like that’s a little reductive, even to say it’s about doing the right thing still leaves the actual moral underneath, what is the right thing to do?
Get ready for all the new botched colors on the horizon as we see more “remastered for HDR” restorations in the future. Per your request you should message DrDre on resources, I couldn’t name the thread but I have seen discussion of sharing LUTs around the forum from other members before.
How would you define the third thing the ST is doing? That’s where it feels loose to me, whereas the OT has its roots deep in that of retelling myth and the PT in tragedy.
I think the definition of the Star Wars saga depends on which trilogies you include.
If you only include the OT, it’s the story of Luke Skywalker. We watch as he goes though the hero’s journey, in the style of classic mythology.
If you add the prequels, it becomes the story of Anakin Skywalker. We watch as he rises, falls, and rises again, in the style of a classic tragedy.
If you add the sequels, it becomes the story of the Skywalker family. We watch as they go through their lives, ending with someone who isn’t part of the family taking their name.
One of these things is not like the others…
Yeah, the definition gets a lot looser once George stops being the showrunner. The first six movies were under one single vision, but now it’s basically a free for all.
I don’t think so, if we’re all being honest it became the story of the Skywalker family when the PT was added. Just because George retroactively said it was the story of Anakin doesn’t make it true, obviously the OT isn’t Anakin’s story and TPM barely is either.
No that’s ridiculous to say it was never the story of the Skywalker family before the PT, Luke goes with Ben as a mentor because he knew his father, he wants to live up to his father, not just be a Jedi because he’s all invested in the creed or even aware of them. What about Darth Vader being the father in the second movie? how early did George’s mind have to be set to qualify exactly?
Besides the reason I said one is not like the others and what I believe StarkillerAG was implying has more to do with the progression from retelling classic mythology to classic tragedy where by the third it’s not so anchored in intention (which also isn’t to say the individual movies are without theme).

I guess the question then is how will he talk about it? In light of criticisms leveled against TFA he seemed to concede a little and acknowledged the ways it was a copy of ANH, though I don’t see him doing the same for TROS being so messy, it’s not as direct of a point. Maybe one day he’ll say he regrets not going in with a stronger plan for the trilogy from the beginning, or admit the whole dagger quest was lazy overall, maybe he’ll talk about the Kylo footage that never made it to the theatrical version, but there won’t be a tell-all book about it anytime soon.
It feels like the use of props like the wayfinder and the dagger made a real shorthand to trim down TROS to the barest essentials, it’s almost like they threw their hands up on the organic resolution and just went with what was simple to follow, with whatever was left on the cutting room floor still leading to the same place but less shallow on the details behind those individual pieces.
