Star Wars Trilogy SE bluray color regrade (a WIP)
Time

Looking slightly more pink/magenta than before (not a bad thing), really feeling that vibrant technicolor it’s got a rich punch to it. And wow, a version of 4k77 that finally looks right to me. Could just be jpeg compression but I do see some artifacts in the star field, goes away lower the black point, obviously without killing any of that sweet, preserved detail.

Maybe worth switching over to some other shots at this point? Was helpful at first using the same reference for a while but the slightness between the options can be a little maddening.

The brightness looks a quarter step too high in some places to me, but we all have different displays. I think this has been overall great progress, but I wonder where the rabbit hole ends.

my take:

ESB intro - Franz Waxman redux [short/misc.]
Time

This is just something fun, with no other special edits made after initial alignment, here is the opening to The Empire Strikes Back set to the score from the 1950’s Billy Wilder classic Sunset Boulevard.

(I would recommend at least watching the opening if you haven’t already seen the movie before viewing this mashup.)

I don’t have anything more to build on top of this, there is no extended version, but I thought it would be different and could open up some discussion. Maybe others have tried their own soundtrack replacements, what score would really change or suit other scenes in fun and interesting ways?

(READ DESCRIPTION) Nightmare Fuel Non-Horror Movie Scenes
Time

Stop motion animation always holds a special place in my heart for its inherent creep factor, in particular creatures composited against live action. There’s just something about the jerky movements that add a strange, unsettling layer to whatever the effect is, and usually it was some deformed monster to start.

I will always remember the 1986 Eddie Murphy movie The Golden Child for this reason. Not otherwise the most memorable or respected movie, listed as a “fantasy comedy film”. I won’t go deep into the plot details, a lot about some magic knife and the most 80s approach to Tibetan mysticism you could ever hope for. Oh, also the main villain worships the devil and transforms into a giant literal demon with wings that chases down Eddie Murphy and a little boy.

You just don’t know how to brace for that as a kid, definite nightmare fuel.

And that’s not even as crazy as whatever is going on with the final boss from a movie like Howard the Duck
(also released in '86)!
