Soldier Shoots Dog With Smoke Round
Time
You have to have a certain mental state in order to be a marine or a soldier. Most of us "normal" people would never be able to handle their day to day life. It's not just what they're exposed to in Iraq and the constant death they experience, but also about the way they live and how they're treated by their superiors. Hell, I was in the Air Force for 4 years and I couldn't understand half the stuff those guys did. The marines I hung around with would beat each other up just for fun, all of them laughing as they did so. That's just the way they are, and no amount of funding is going to change them. The fact is, the training they have to go through in order to do the things they have to do is unique and only certain types of individuals can get through it.

Not that I'm defending in any way what happened in these instances, but no amount of psychotherapy or revocation of internet privileges is going to stop them. The only thing that will is harsher disciplinary action handed out to the offenders, and making sure all soldiers know about it. I seriously doubt that the people who shot these videos are the ones who uploaded them to the internet. What most likely happened in both cases was the video was emailed to some friends, someone took offense, and as a result made it public. I can't count the number of times I received pictures and video emailed from friends serving in Iraq or Afghanistan or forwarded from someone else.

Brett Favre Rides into the Sunset

There was a rumor that he might sign with Green Bay this season. On NFL Network, they were saying that Favre definitely didn't retire because Moss signed with the Pats again, but the timing of Favre's announcement may have had something to do with the Moss signing on Monday.

Favre is one of the greatest of all time. Outside of John Elway, I don't know that I ever enjoyed watching another quarterback play as much as Favre. His competitiveness and improvisation on the field were second to none.

None of those programs can rip DVDs. You might be able to work with VOB files in Final Cut, but that really doesn't help when trying to work with an encrypted DVD. You'd want to use something like Mac the Ripper to get your files off the disc. Once you have the files, any of those programs should do what you want editing-wise. Final Cut Studio uses DVD Studio Pro to author to DVD. iMovie will export to iDVD, but I personally have had awful experiences with its MPEG2 encoding. Though I may have just been a victim of the default settings.

Hands down, the best thing out there for PCs is Adobe Premiere. Only problem is it's about $800. I've never used the other programs you mention, but I would go with Pinnacle Studio Plus simply based on its features. If you're interested in doing a lot of editing in the future, especially if your plans include working with a lot of footage, I would seriously look into saving up for Premiere or even one of the Creative Suite bundles with Photoshop and After Effects.

I personally have used Premiere, Final Cut Pro, Avid, and a few others like iMovie and really old versions of Pinnacle Studio from 1999/2000. My favorite would have to be Final Cut Pro, followed by Avid, and then Premiere.

LOST

Well I wouldn't say this last episode was my favorite, but still had some cool twists in it. Other people I've talked to said they saw the whole Aaron thing coming, but I didn't. And was it just me, or was Miles insinuating that Ben was the one with special powers who could conjure up anything he wanted?

As far as the space/time thing goes, next week's episode should be pretty interesting.

It's a pretty significant difference from what I've seen. But MeBe would know for sure.

As far as an anamorphic release goes, there's no way I'm watching a 4:3 letterboxed version on my HDTV, so what do you think? For as much as we've dogged the GOUT for it's non-anamorphic presentation and how many times we've discussed the anamorphic vs. letterbox issue, it's would almost be hypocritical to only do a 4:3 letterbox release.

Video Games - a general discussion thread

You'll have to excuse my ignorance when it comes to Playstations, since I've never owned any iteration (1, 2, or 3) and hardly ever played them. I was under the impression that your FF game was a PS2 game and you were trying to save it to a PS2 memory card. I take it that's not the case? It may still be a problem with the system, but since you know that PS2 cards work just fine with it, it's hard to say. If you haven't already done so, it may help to do some google research to find out if anyone else has ever had problems with PS1 cards in their PS2 and if you have to use the PS1 cards to save your games.

The old switcheroo - I've done this on a couple of occasions with different products. Say you buy something online or receive something as a gift that didn't come with a receipt and it ends up being defective. Go to Wal-mart or some other store that carries the item (make sure they issue refunds on returns and not store credit). Buy a brand new one and then the next day return your non-functioning one with the receipt. You get your money back and they do whatever it is they do with defective merchandise. If there's a restocking fee involved, you should decide before you buy whether it's worth it or not (and of course there's that whole thing about whether you can even afford to make another purchase). This is usually better than trying to return your defective item without a receipt because most stores usually want to give you store credit if you don't have your receipt, and may not take it back at all if you're missing accessories or the original packaging.

Is there any way your roommate can get that PS2 repaired? If not, just fill the first slot with EZ-putty and never use it again. In fact, I don't think I'd trust either slot in that machine ever again to save my data - especially with a FF game. If the exact same thing happened with two different memory cards, either the guy you bought them from is knowingly selling you defective cards, or more likely the card reader interface on the playstation is defective and it's damaging your cards. Are you sure they don't sell PS2 memory cards in the stores anymore? You could buy one and do the old switcheroo...

How much longer will the format war last?
Time
Now that there is officially a single HD optical format, instead of concentrating on a format war, we can concentrate on the competition between companies vying for your purchase of their Blu-ray/DVD player. Even if you're afraid that Blu-ray is an unfinished format and those 2.0 players still don't seem good enough, and even if you hate Sony with a passion, just wait for another brand and model to come along that does everything you want it to. It it's pretty commonplace for brands to incorporate their own technology into a player or other piece of equipment. Hell, A/V receiver and pre-amp makers come up with new stuff every year to try and one-up the competition. In this coming year with more and more people purchasing HDTVs, and now that the format war has been decided, I don't have any doubt that the competition will drive up the quality of players and eventually drive down the price.
