That's most likely your problem right there tellan. I'm using Huffyuv in Premiere Pro without problems. My settings for the Huffyuv codec are Predict Median (YUY2), Predict Gradient (RGB), field threshold 240 lines, and I have "Always suggest RGB format" checked and "Enable full-size output buffer" checked.

If you change your settings, you might have to recapture in order to make your AVI's work in Premiere.

Too blue eh? You may be right about that, I've been staring at this video so long that I've kinda gotten used to it.

One thing that blew me away about the DVD's was how black things were compared to the LD's. I've tried this round to emulate that by darkening just the shadows. To my eye, it looks pretty good. But this may be why it looks too contrasted to you.

I don't think I can really provide frame numbers for you, as I'm not really capturing from the beginning of the film, and the Faces LD's are not CAV so I wouldn't be able to use the LD's frame numbers as a reference since CLV doesn't have any. Perhaps a description would help? For instance, the closeup of Leia (#13 there) is the third frame of that shot.

It's true that the stars suffer a lot from the large amount of filters I'm using. I'm hoping that with my new equipment I won't have to use half of them. I've already experimented a little with editing in new starfields, so that's probably what I would do in a worst-case scenario.

At any rate, I'd really like to see some of your screencaps.

Putting this new script aside for a moment, here are my latest results, which should mark the end for my current hardware setup as my new stuff will be coming in this coming week:

(more screenshots on the web site)

I think these are my best results so far. As you can see, these shots are not oversaturated and there is a bit more detail since my raw capture was not as dark.

I started with a more neutral capture setting in VirtualVCR, then captured all three ANH LD's and TooTed them together. Then in AVIsynth I cropped the video down to size, and used Laserschwert's second de-ghost method:

v1=AviSource("e:\zion.avi").ConvertToYUY2.GuavaComb(mode="NTSC").SeparateFields.SelectEvery(10,0,1,2,3,4,5,6,9).Weave.AssumeFPS(23.976)

v2=v1.crop(4,0,0,0).AddBorders(0,0,4,0, color=$FFFFFF).blur(.5)

v3 = overlay(v1,v2, opacity=0.2, mode="Darken") # remove only bright halos

return v3

Then in VDubMod I IVTC'd, resized to 2x and ran the MSU smart sharpen and denoise filters, then resized back to 720x274. From there, color corrected each shot individually with Adobe Premiere. Then resized to anamorphic back in AVIsynth.

I know there's a lot of dot crawl in these caps. I was switching between GuavaComb and DeDot and I think I had them both disabled when I did my final save.

So what do you guys think? When my new LD player and capture card get here, I'll be doing another capture like this, only I shouldn't have to do any deghosting or noise filtering.

Thanks guys. I'm still having a problem though. I made a folder in my plugins directory for MaskTools and I'm calling it in my script like this:

LoadPlugin("D:\Program Files\AviSynth 2.5\plugins\MaskTools\MaskTools.dll")

When I load the script, it's saying "there is no function named yv12lutxy." Is there something else I need, like a newer version of AVIsynth?

Hey Karyudo! Nice to see you've made your way over here. The TooT filter is working out great, now that I've gotten three copies of the Faces trilogy. I hope you'll stick around. I'd love to see what results you're getting lately. I'm thinking of doing the same thing and goint in and painting out the specs frame by frame. Now if I could only find a place to download Combustion 3....

Daniel, sorry I haven't gotten back to you yet. I'm sending you a PM now.

This is just my opinion, but I think it would be very beneficial to make some adjustments to the brightness and contrast levels. As you probably already know, the levels are different for the first 10 mins or so of ANH than they are for the rest. What I've been doing this week is working with the first 10 mins. and color correcting each shot individually. Playing around in Adobe Premiere, I've been able to take that bland, semi-washed out LD capture and make the blacks look black and the whites look white, all in all removing that awefull yellowish tone as well. I would encourage you to do something like this as well. That gray starfield is just painful to look at.

Help Wanted: missing 3P0 line wav required
Time
I think you're confusing people, MeBeJedi. There is no PCM track on the ANH DVD, only 448k 5.1 DD and a 192 2.0 DD. Niether one is going to give you an uncompressed PCM track.
so if I use my original capture Wav file as a sound stream on my dvd, that could sound better than the converted AC3 file?

The captured PCM audio off the LD will probably give you better sound quality. I would recommend getting the center channel dialogue off the DVD's 5.1 track and mixing that in. That should give you the best sound quality, even if you decide to compress it down to DD or DTS audio later.

Edit: Do you still need the isolated center dialoge from the 5.1 track? If so, I'll put it up for you to download.

Ash, I've noticed that PowerDVD doesn't do a great job of capturing the correct levels. All of the screenshots I have provided were taken from virtualdub and cropped in either photoshop or paint shop pro. Is there a way you can open up a DVD in virtualdub, or at least open up the necessary vob file and grab screenshots? If so, I would recommend redoing all of your shots that way.

EDIT: looks like we're on the same page jimmy.

Speaking of my screenshots, it doesn't look like they're showing up. Did you take them down or something Ash?

Dark Empire Collection - OT LD to DVD set (* unfinished project *)

Is there any kind of prep work(cleaning) I should do to the LDs before capturing?

Clean them off like you would a CD or DVD. Get some cleaner spray or even windex and wipe them off with a lint-free cloth (I use a t-shirt). This will help to make sure that your player reads the disc as best it can. This probably won't reduce the amount of rots spots though.

Info: eBay sellers - a rant

Yeah, it really sucks what happened to tombstone. I also recall the day mame.dk was forced to shut down. I loved that place.

It's gives me a bad taste in my mouth to think that someone like the MPAA would go after a web site for something, but turn their heads the other way when something worse is happeneing on Ebay. I realize that one day I'm going to see someone else selling my DVD's there, and that's going to piss me off even more.

skeg64,

Great post. If you read the first post of this thread you will note that I'm using Sonic Scenarist as my authoring program. I am aware of the differences between anamorphic and letterbox subtitles and how to create them.

At this time, I'm still contemplating whether or not to burn the alien subs directly to the video. If I decide to burn them in, I also need to decide whether or not I want them on the video, or on the black bar below it. I really don't know what how I want to do this, so everyone please feel free to give me your opinion on the matter.

Spider, in order to capture the audio, I'm recording the digital out straight into my sound card into PCM format. From there, I can create both a PCM track and a DD 2.0 track for my DVD's. I'm not going to bother trying to capture the CC subtitles. Zottig has agreed to help me create an English subtitle track for my DVD's. The best way to do this may be to just get an existing subtitle file and convert it to .sst so I can author it with Scenarist.

Let me know what you find out MeBeJedi. Subtitles are one thing I haven't researched much so far.
