You mean send out a mass email right? I wouldn't be opposed to it, but I'm not going to give out the long list of email addresses I have of people asking about my project. Since most people emailing me are only concerned about how much it would cost them to get a set, what I could do is send out an email letting everyone know of the current state of things, a link to Laserman's site, and an invitation to make a PayPal donation to the X0 project. I've thought about even putting a PayPal link up on my site about it.

Well, one thing's for sure - a lot of you are putting my raw captures to shame. Those Elite players are amazing.

You're absolutely right, the bottom one looks the best of the three, even though it's MPEG2. Hauppage cards have always been some of the best available, I just never looked at them because they only do MPEG captures. The middle one looks the closest to mine, and that makes sense since my cards are the newer generation of the BT8*8's.

That's a very good example of the three most common variety PC capture devices. You would be better off starting a new thread about this though as it doesn't have much to do with my project.

Good capture cards - recommendations?
Time
MSI TV @nywhere Master - This worked fine but the picture quality wasn't really good enough (it's only a cheapish card) even through S-video.
Leadtek Winfast PVR 2000 - This works well and has only a slight reduction in picture quality but won't accept an NTSC signal! Doh!

I have both the MSI TV @nywhere Master and the Leadtek Winfast TV 2000 Expert. For NTSC, I found the MSI card to have a slight edge in video quality, but it was pretty close.

These might seem like "cheapish" cards compared to the All-In-Wonders, but it's because they're a stripped down version that does nothing but pass a video signal. $30-$50 is all you should expect to pay, and you would be hard pressed to find a better device that captures to AVI. The other options out there, while more expensive and perhaps better at what they do, capture only in MPEG.

My apologies to the members of this forum.

Thanks for your support Jay. I'll do my best to help this place out and keep it a fun atmosphere that we can all enjoy.

Let this mark the end of the "dark times" and move on to "golden age" of OT preservation. I see nothing but great things ahead of us. I hope everyone is ready.

And let me be the first to say I'd be happy to contribute financially to this place. I honestly would have nowhere near the amount of support for my project that I do if not for this site.

In my version, one will watch the story. You'll be sucked in and you'll stay there. You won't be distracted from it by basic technical errors and out-of-place visuals. That's it. This forum is a celebration not of a "version", but of the original experience. My restoration recaptures that experience, certainly as I see it, and probably as most people see it. But this isn't for anyone but me, and so far I can tell you I'm quite happy. When I watch the restored portions I've done, I quickly forget where and what I've fixed... I'm just no longer seeing things that are obviously incorrect. It's a smooth landscape again, and I'm watching the characters, and feeling the emotions.

Mike, that is EXACTLY the same way I feel, as I'm sure the rest of us do. Preservation should be about recapturing the experience, not about what was on a reel of film back in '77. Thanks for reminding me why I do this.

Yeah, it's the same motion menu I had up before, where the logo fades away with video clips playing inside the letters just like the Official DVD's. I just made a better Star Wars logo in Photoshop and applied it to my existing After Effects project. After trying out a few EPS files that were floating around and not really being happy with any of them, I decided to make my own logo using a screengrab from the ESB opening shot as a reference. I used a font called "Star Jedi Rounded" and tweaked the letters for correct spacing, width and height. It's not perfect, but it's good enough for me.

I'd post the whole clip, but unfortunately my website has exceeded it's bandwidth for the month (yeah, I know, ALREADY!). I have the countless fanboy sites all across the net linking to my image archive and leaching all of my ROTS images to thank for that. But that's another story...

A message to Jay in regards to DanielB

What all this really comes down to is a question of forum etiquette. It's obvious that this board is unmoderated for the most part and this simply isn't working anymore. There is no need for the trash this board has recently treaded, and there's really no reason why it needs to continue. If I were Jay I'd appoint a moderator to keep the peace. If you need a volunteer, sign me up.

For what it's worth Laserman, I have probably gotten around 50-100 emails regarding my DVD project since I began making regular updates back in October. In the past few weeks, I've gotten a lot of emails from people who can't wait to see the results of the X0 project. I just want you to know that there ARE poeple out there who care and want to see this project completed. I understand if it isn't in your heart anymore to work on this. I just hope that that doesn't keep the project closed for those of us who wish to continue where you left off.

Sorry I haven't been around lately, the holidays tend to do that for a lot of us as someone posted above. I'm not gone, and I don't plan on going anywhere anytime soon. My project will continue to it's completion, regardless of what the naysayers say. I would encourage everyone else who has doubts and is thinking of leaving to seriously re-consider. We have worked hard to make this a place where we can objectively discuss each other's projects and learn from each other. Sure, it has hit a bit of a lul the past couple of months, but that doesn't mean we should just give up on it.

DanielB, you know why things have taken a turn for the worse around here. You've taken on the role of forum troll and have successfully launched almost every thread you've touched into a downward spiral. How do you not see this? How can you sit there refuse to take the blame for these "dark times" of late? Seriously man, I know you've got an opinion, but don't go turning people's project threads into damn flame fest.

Again Laserman, thanks for all you've done in the persuit of OT preservation. You've done more than any of us here have, and probably ever will. I can only hope that you allow the rest of us to continue where you left off.

Looks like a lost cause Moth3r. Thanks for the link. Apparently there's nothing I can do to fix my machine but buy a new one. I think I'll pass on that, though I'll probably end up selling this thing back on Ebay once I finish my project. Speaking of which, at this point I'm giving up on capturing my own raw footage. In it's place, I will be getting the raw capture files from Laserman's X0 project. I'm sure these will be much better caps than what I've been able to work with so far. As soon as I get these X0 files I'll be able to crank out these dvd's. Stay tuned.
