Good game. Bledsoe showed that he can still rifle the ball and run when he needs to. A few of his passes were underthrown though - short passes at that.

Hasselbeck looked decent except for that interception which was a poor decision on the run. He had two guys open right in front of him. Here's hoping he has a GREAT season though! (he's my starting QB on my fantasy team)

Sorry for the lack of updates lately. Things have slowed down, but we're definitely still hard at work.

Coming this week:

- The first of a few new articles on the web site
- The second issue of the newsletter
- A new screenshot or two (time permitting)

As of late I'm working on a new backend for the web site: A way to make the site more interactive and allow for quicker and more frequent updates. (Did someone say wiki?)

Don't know much about Brad May other than he was on the Canucks last season. Could be a decent addition along with Turgeon after Forsberg's departure (sniff).

Aw man, that's no fun. I thought they would at least have a shootout if there was no winner after OT. They'll have to reevaluate that after this season I think. At least shootouts in the regular season will be cool to watch.

There are no black borders (beyond the few lines in Moth3r's original). You have the full 360 lines of picture that all other anamorphic transfers will have.

You're right. It does look pretty darn good.

Going back to what I said before though (and this is more of an FYI thing), your video resolution doesn't have to be 360 lines. Most of the other anamorphic transfers have more than that. The official DVD, for example, has a 720x365 viewable area. To keep the same aspect ratio you have in your screenshots, you could easily resize your video to 720x368 instead of 704x360. This would not only result in a little bit less quality loss from Moth3r's 432-line original, but would completely eliminate the side borders altogether. Just a thought...

I've been an Avs fan since they moved from Quebec. It's hard to see some of the great players like Forsberg and Kariya leave, but I'm actually more excited to see that they've managed to restructure the players' salaries and make the league more competetive.

I'm also excited about the new rules. Seeing shootouts again is going to be awesome -- especially in the playoffs! Can you imagine the Stanley Cup Finals next June coming down to a shootout in game 7?

More than anything, I'll just be happy to see some damn pro hockey games again. My two main sports are football and hockey, and I've been going crazy ever since February without hockey around.

I guess I should answer your initial question and say I watch my DVDs on my computer, which has no overscan obviously. You are correct though, watching these on a regular 4:3 television, one would not be able to see the side borders. The Dr. Gonzo set has borders on the sides like this, and I do find it a little annoying watching it. So I guess what I'm saying is the way I watch movies, overscan isn't an issue and I would opt for the larger picture image of a full 720 pixel width.

On the flip side, all people who watch movies on a television are subject to overscan. Personally, if I had to choose between lost information on the sides and a larger picture, I'd still choose a larger picture.

Sorry if that didn't make any sense. Take your initial border example from the first post. If the bottom cap has been resized to the correct aspect ratio, what's stopping you from resizing that to 720 by whatever and eliminating the side bars altogether? The height doesn't have to be 360.

What I decided in the end was that no one is really going to care or notice if it's off a little bit as long as their screen is filled horizontally. What people will notice and possibly get annoyed at is the presence of black bars on the sides -- even moreso if they're not the same size. So I guess if you're going to keep the borders, at least make sure the image is centered.

If you took the Official DVDs as gospel and used them as the reference for the correct aspect ratio, what would the image size of the corresponding Moth3r clip be? What's stopping you from upsizing that to 720xX, since you were planning on resizing it anyway?

You may find that the guides posted on doom9.org and videohelp.com to be invaluable training tools like some of us have. The forums on both sites hold a wealth of information as well.

Thanks for the excellent review Rik. Hopefully we can get a few more people like Dayv to post their own assessments of each transfer. The more opinions we can get the better. Anyone feeling motivated?
