Dr. M's Reinventing The Wheel Edition (PAL to NTSC+) (Released)
Time
I guess I should answer your initial question and say I watch my DVDs on my computer, which has no overscan obviously. You are correct though, watching these on a regular 4:3 television, one would not be able to see the side borders. The Dr. Gonzo set has borders on the sides like this, and I do find it a little annoying watching it. So I guess what I'm saying is the way I watch movies, overscan isn't an issue and I would opt for the larger picture image of a full 720 pixel width.

On the flip side, all people who watch movies on a television are subject to overscan. Personally, if I had to choose between lost information on the sides and a larger picture, I'd still choose a larger picture.

In some cases they take 32-40 lines off the left and a few from the right, sometimes none from the left and a few from the right. I even found a scene where the right side has more image (by like 20 lines) than ANY NTSC edition. (Though where they got the extra image area from is beyond me.)

One reason for this is the fact that different capture cards have different clipping areas. Owning a few different models myself, I found that each card clipped the sides in different places. I was able to hack the settings of one card and remove all clipping, but this isn't something you can do with 99% of them.

I'm not sure on this, but clipping may be different between different LD versions as well -- i.e. the PAL LDs Moth3r used may be different than the US Definitives Dr. Gonzo used.

I realized this a while back when doing my own capturing and trying to figure out the correct aspect ratio. What I decided in the end was that no one is really going to care or notice if it's off a little bit as long as their screen is filled horizontally. What people will notice and possibly get annoyed at is the presence of black bars on the sides -- even moreso if they're not the same size. So I guess if you're going to keep the borders, at least make sure the image is centered.

If you took the Official DVDs as gospel and used them as the reference for the correct aspect ratio, what would the image size of the corresponding Moth3r clip be? What's stopping you from upsizing that to 720xX, since you were planning on resizing it anyway?

I think Detroit will suprise a lot of people this year. I see them making the playoffs while either the Pack or Vikes get snubbed. The Lions made a lot of good moves this offseason, including signing my man Kenoy Kennedy from the Broncos.

I'm a Bronco fan born and raised. I can't wait to see how good our D will be this year. They'll be underrated because of what happened last year against Indy and the handful of unproven players starting this year like Gerard Warren, Courtney Brown, and Nick Fergussen.

I think the other teams that might suprise people this year will be the Arizona Cardinals and the Bengals. Both have a lot of talent and it may be the year for both teams to make legitamate playoff campaigns.

Lol, hi Ousley. It's Grimby.

My advice to you, JediKev, if you're reading this: take note what the others are saying about you and adjust yourself accordingly. You really do have the ability to be a valued member of this community if you want to be.

Yes it is, and of course we're going to hang on to the original capture files after we're done.

Sorry for the confusion. What I mean is that we're not concentrating on the audio, or the menus or the special features or the subtitles right now. We're concentrating on cleaning up the video first and foremost. Everything else will come later.

Capturing with an HD card won't make it look any better. There are still only 277 (usable) lines of resolution from the LD, no matter what resolution you choose to capture at.

Upscaling would be a possibility, but it's unlikely that it will look any better on an HD screen. We'll see though. I managed to upscale and make that turd of a ROTS xvid look decent, maybe we can do the same thing with the X0.

Things have been pretty slow-going the past few weeks. Things have come up on our end that had temporarily pushed the project off our priority list. The biggest setback for me was when my secondary HD crapped out and I lost all my X0 files. I had to send another HD to MeBe to get the files back, so I'll have them again soon.

In the mean time, we've been going frame by painstaking frame through the capture and documenting what needs to be done (help us out and contribute to the "fixes and glitches" thread if you've got any info to share). We've also been tinkering off and on with cleaning up the video and should have some sample stuff to show in the near future.

The "when will this be out" question gets asked a lot, so I think I'll throw up some sort of FAQ on the web site. The answer right now is we don't know. It will be ready when it's ready. But we're 4 guys with full-time jobs, so it's not like we have hours and hours to work on this thing every day.

Star War, Episode III - Backstroke Of The West (part-finished release?)

Sitting here drinking my blue milk and commenting to myself on the gheyness of the concept of "proper forum etiquette," I remember that as a mod I shouldn't post about such things. (oops)

I did some research a while back on this "Engrish" ROTS bootleg. All I could really find was that it was an Asian bootleg and it may have never found its way online. I did, however, try searching for downloadable Chinese subtitles that I could translate back into English. I didn't put much effort in though and something else came up, so all I got was a set of Japanese subs that I have yet to play around with. Anyone else have any experience with subs and/or know where to find this bootleg? At the very least, this would be a great addition to a future ROTS DVD edit.

What do you use to master your DVD's?
Time
I use Sonic Scenarist. It was the first "real" authoring program I messed with and I've been able to do pretty much anything I want with it. Of course there's a bit of a learning curve, but once you get the hang of it and understand the structure of a DVD, it's easy to use. I've heard great things about other authoring programs out there, like DVD Lab Pro and Maestro, but I've never tried them myself.

***The "official" Screenshots feedback thread ***

I wouldn't pin it down on temporal filters just yet. I have had similar results to these straight from a raw capture. The only explanation I had was the settings used on my capture program, though the specifics elude me at the moment. I have a few raw capture files on my HD, all done the same day, that have this same ghosting effect.

It's hard to say what the real cause of this is. There's only one person who knows for sure...
