What a weekend of football! Pittsburgh upsets the Colts, the Broncos "upset" the Patriots, Steve Smith running all over the Bears D, Shaun Alexander getting knocked silly. All 4 of these games were awesome. I think the biggest suprise of all was how Denver and Pittsburgh were able to knock Brady and Manning off their games and keep them frustrated all day.

We also had some of the worst officiating I've ever seen. That Polamalu pick that got overturned was crap. The pass interference call on the Patriots should have gone against Ashley Lelie if anything. And apparently in Chicago the referee doesn't pay any attention to the play clock. (And for the record, there's no way you could tell whether Champ Bailey fumbled that ball through the end zone.)

People say that the Patriots beat themselves and let Denver win. I say Denver just got under their skin and kept the pressure on. Sure the Denver offense was average at best, but they put the game away in the fourth and didn't let Brady work his magic. On the other hand, Pittsburgh did everything they could to let the Colts beat them at the end. Even the refs were on Indy's side, but the Steelers came out on top anyway.

My predictions for Sunday:

Broncos 28, Steelers 20

Seahawks 34, Panthers 31

No matter how much nobody wants to hear it, this is Denver's year.

On Christianity
Time
You do you realize that most of the articles on that page are pretty funny when viewed from a Christian standpoint?

Let me get this out of the way first: I am a non-denominational Christian. Which means that I do not adhere to any certain denomination of Christianity such as Catholicism or Protestantism, Baptist or Evangelical. The Bible is my guide first and foremost, and I am by no means a perfect example so don't expect me to be.

My personal arguments against a Christian god:

1) If the Christian god is truly omnipotent, it would mean he would know everything--past, present, and future--therefore; when he made us, he had already known that things would go to hell (no pun intended). If god is benevolent, he would not have made us just to see his creation suffer. This includes the fact that he created a world that is naturally destructive and violent (e.g. earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, hurricanes). Therefore, god is not moral, contrary to the Bible, so evil and suffering contradict existence of god.
Let's start at the beginning. If the Christian God is real, that means that He did in fact create a perfect world in the beginning. A world free of sin and suffering and death. But he gave us the ability to choose to follow Him or rebel and live against Him. He also gave angels like Lucifer the same freedom. His and man's choice to sin and reject God resulted in the world we live in today. Is this the way things will be forever? Hell no. This is merely a stepping stone in the abyss of eternity.

2) If God gave us free will, he would not have placed upon us the condition that we must worship him and no other god.

Well according to the Christian God, no other gods exist. So really, you've been given the free will to choose between God and eternal life or eternal death. This isn't like choosing between obeying your parents or rebelling and living your own life. This is really about choosing between good and evil.

In fact, this gives perfect justification for going to war in the name of the "right" god. In the course of history, when you realize how many wars were fought in the name of god, there is a question of why God would want millions to die for him if he wanted people to do good and right in his name.

Who says all wars were faught with God's blessing? Again, it's really all about man's choice to do the right thing or do the wrong thing. Besides, believing in something strongly enough to go to war over it is what free will is all about. That has nothing to do with whether God exists or not. That just means that people are excersizing the gift they have been given. The choice they make is a completely different matter.

T.O. isn't to blame for this mess, Reid is. Yeah T.O. acted like an ***hole but, that alone can't excuse the embarassing losses this season. The Eagles have been totally unprepared for just about every game. Reid has never known what to do in the last two minutes of a half. He failed to replace key players during the off season. He never changes his play book dispite the fact that everyone in the league has figured it out. He forgets that it is legal to run the ball in football. He should have ordered McNabb to get the surgery much earlier in the season so that the he would have been healthy at post season time, and so the Eagles would have had healthy QB for the rest of the season. He stubborn, arrogant, won't ever admit he's wrong and refuses to change. It is obvous to me the Eagles will never win a championship under him and McNabb. This was supposed to be THE year for the Eagles instead, we're going to have a lossing season and won't make the playoffs. There is NO excuse for this bullsh__. I can't even find the words to discribe just how angry, frustrated, sick and tired of this sh__ I am. IMHO, some one must be made to walk the plank for travesty of a season. My pick: Andy Reid.

Wow, I guess when things are going good -- like three straight appearances in the NFC Championship game and one Superbowl -- things are great. But when they're not, everything is completely thrown out the window. Just remember that T.O. is the cancer of the Eagles that has divided the locker room and created mistrust between players and between coaches. McNabb is the only reason why the Eagles were competetive in the beginning of the season. Had he not been around, you guys would have been in last place a long time ago. When things go wrong with a team like the Eagles this year, or the 2002 Raiders after they lost the Superbowl, people are very eager to point fingers at the head coach. True, he has a responsibility to keep the team in check and get it done on Sunday. But come on, T.O. has killed this Eagles team ever since his comments after the Superbowl, just like he killed the 49ers the last couple of years he was there.

That was an amazing game Dayv! I was obviously rooting for Dallas as well. Hard to believe it ended on a missed field goal by the Chiefs. I turned it off and switched to NFL Prime Time after the last Dallas touchdown. I switched back during a commercial and damn was I suprised to see them lining up for the field goal. Great game.

And damn, the Broncos made the Ravens look like a decent football team. Well, sort of. Boller just made himself look like a 3rd-stringer. That team needs a new QB among other things. And speaking of QB's, another mistake-free game for Plummer. Man, it's good to see Denver holding a two game lead over KC and SD again.

Warbler, seriously man, firing Andy Reid won't help the Eagles. Who are they going to hire? Mariuchi? Billick? Dom Capers?? The only thing holding them to a last-place finish this season is TO and costly injuries to the rest of their key players.

Of course, if we're talking bad movies, the list wouldn't be complete without Plan 9 from Outer Space.

Yes, I have seen Santa Claus Conquers the Martians (the MST3K version). It's a terrible film.

I have seen Plan 9 and I must say it's not as bad as "Manos: the Hands of Fate", and is absolutely an Orson Welles masterpiece if compared with the two worse movies ever made: "Monster a-go-go", and "Os Trapalhoes nas Guerra dos Planetas" aka "Brazillian Star Wars". These two are literally unwatchable.

MST3K made so many horrible movies not only watchable but immensely entertaining. My flavor of the week is "Space Mutany" which features an Admiral who looks like Santa Clause and a ship that looks like a huge boiler room.

Here is something Laserman wrote about a while back. Hope it helps.

Laserman wrote:
I actually first learned that the X0 did not have a recombined composite output when I looked at the X0 service manual whilst (bizarrely) at Nintendo in Japan all those years ago. I now wish I had stolen their copy (and their X0)
As for other evidence, it is probably mentioned in their marketing, we will have to take a look at the pioneer brochures, I remember Ivar posted this a while back too, and I know he had the service manual at one point.

Except the HLD-X9 and the HLD-X0, the composite signal is not Y/C separated and recombined in these two players. After the field buffer, the signal data path is divided into two, one is Y/C separated one is not. The HLD-X9 even has a 3D motion adaptive Y/C separation filter with three different selectable algorithms, for its Y/C data path.

wow. gimme a minute to respond here.

[edit]

I admire the enthusiasm on this guys, I really do. There are merits on both sides of the argument. But I think people are forgetting what we wrote in the first post:
First and foremost, the project aims to be an archive preservation of the Original Star Wars Trilogy laserdiscs in the best quality possible. We are culling video from a number of different sets. These include, but are not limited to, the US Definitive Collection set, the US "Faces" set, and their Japanese equivalents.

Every single frame will be looked at and corrected. Fixes will be limited to dirt and film damage removal, color correction, and stabilization. Wherever possible we will be using the actual celluloid film for reference.

Glitches including matte lines, saber colors, and frame jumps will not be fixed in the initial version. A possible second version could include fixes to matte lines and garbage mattes, but keep the rest of the "glitches" intact.

We will always be keeping the raw transfer, with starless starfields, LD pressing errors, garbage mattes, everything. (Think of this as the DarkJedi of X0 releases. )
For the absolute purist, this may be their lovechild. It will be how the LDs would look if you were fortunate enough to own an X0 player.

We will also be doing a straight cleanup to remove cue dots, laserdisc sparklies, restore the starfields (remembering we aren't putting any stars back that are not on the laserdisc, just bringing them out), remove the garbage mattes, remove any "film problems" i.e. splices, scratches etc. as per our previous newsletter, and adjust the color to match the theatrical releases as close as possible.

This would form our "base print" for any future projects. These would include things like saber fixes, fixing dodgy effects, etc.

Garbage mattes are really a color correction issue when you think about it. If the colors were set properly, you wouldn't see them at all. At least in the initial archive version, they are certainly of interest from a 'wow, look how they did that in 1977' point of view.

But they won't be in the version that we will be sitting down to enjoy watching in our homes.
