What I'm looking at is the proportions of his head...it just doesn't look right, to me it looks stretched out...
It may be nothing but I don't recall Vader's head
being that mis-shapened, even with him moving around....

Keep in mind that PAL has more vertical resolution, which would make the frame appear stretched on your computer.

Very true. I compared caps I made with PowerDVD to caps I made from VirtualDubMod and there is a clear difference. PowerDVD seems to want to rescale and recolor the image before it spits it out. What I always do when making caps is load the VOB file from the DVD into VirtualDubMod, select "copy source frame to clipboard", and then paste into Photoshop and save to the desired format - either 100% quality JPEG or PNG.

Idea: Personalized preservation possible with September 2006 OT DVD's

Well at least you got off to a good start. I'm sure this thread has both inspired others to pick up where you left off, and given them some good ideas of how to go about it.

Also check out this thread for comparisons of similar fonts and the names of a few that are more accurate.

I'd really like for the XØ to listen to some files encoded with thsi method, I can encode some samples for you or send you the guide and all necessary software via PM.

Hard to say no to that. PM me.

So, this is how the DVDs are going to look...

Because the whole shot was recomposited. The starfield, the planets, and the ships are all separate elements. Whoever recomposited the shot left the matte lines the same as the LD release, didn't overdo the blue flare like the 2004 DVDs, and used the same starfield as the 2004 DVDs - which we now know is the original starfield from '77. Seeing as they either digitally created the opening crawl or used the same one as the Empire of Dreams documentary, the starfield used on the crawl/pan down/opening shot is the original and not the one from the pre-SE home video releases.

2006 OT DVD: Poll: So What are You Going to Do?
Time
I voted for not buying them until the reviews are in. Not that I really want to buy them, but I guess I'm undecided based on what's going to happen with the Saga Box Set. I'd much rather sink my money into that than this rushed, low budget release.

I also edited the title to differentiate between the two similar threads. With the new software I'll be able to merge threads like these....
