This is all I wanted. I'm happy, no need for another OOT release EVER for me!

Getting rid of the bars and watching something in the correct aspect ratio are two different things. Most widescreen TVs have several modes for stretching 4:3 material to fill up the screen, but most of them use some method of leaving the middle of the screen unstretched while stretching out the sides. If you can't tell the difference while you're in the "fish eye" mode, then more power to you. But at least realize that the only way to view a letterbox source in the correct aspect ratio is to watch it in normal "postage stamp" mode as pictured above, or to use zoom. All modes aside from the normal mode, be it "full", "zoom", or what have you, stretch the picture.

OK, what you're saying doesn't make any sense. You say you have a widescreen TV and you are not zooming in. That would mean that these LETTERBOX DVDs are sitting in the middle of your TV like this with bars on all sides:

(credit goes to zombie for posting this on TFN)

If you aren't using zoom, this is what your screen looks like.

So, a simple question....
Time
The term OUT comes from the Lucas marketing machine. It stands for Original Unaltered Trilogy, which is their definition of what these 2006 DVDs are.

Since the OUTs are not the true theatrical editions which Lucasfilm is advertising them to be, we have officially begun calling them the GOUT, which stands for George's Original Unaltered Trilogy. In essence, it refers to the 2006 DVD editions of the 1993 laserdisc versions. Check out the last couple pages of the X0 Project thread for how this came about.

To answer your question eros, nobody has posted any high quality screenshots from the R1 release yet, so it's hard to make a determination. I did not buy the DVDs, so I can't even give you my own opinion.

Are you saying you love watching letterbox movies in normal mode, i.e. with bars on all four sides of the picture? The top and bottom bars are present on these movies whether they're presented in anamorphic or not.

Rubbish. There is no valid reason to suspect the retail DVD isn't authentic.
Watch the crawl again. Notice how the stars wobble and the words don't. I would say that's more than a valid reason to suspect the GOUT has a recreated crawl.

Several projects keep the uncompressed PCM audio from the LDs, which is better than the Dolby Digital used on the GOUT DVDs.

Have you got proof, or is this another assumption like your previous one about the crawl "almost certainly" being CG...

What proof do you need that uncompressed audio is better than 192Kbps compressed audio? It's a fact.

Screenshots are up on the Screenshot Comparison Page

After looking at R2D2's screencaps, it would appear that the GOUT has slightly better detail than even Moth3r's PAL transfer. However, there is no doubt in my mind that this PAL release is sourced from the NTSC master. Just look at the way Moth3r's and Citizen's shots are framed compared to all the NTSC versions. The PAL GOUT is the same as all the NTSC versions. There is also no doubt in my mind that the opening shot was recomposited.

If I missed the desired frame, please post it here, I can fix that. If you need other screenshots from ANH, post it here, too.

I see a couple that appear to be the incorrect frame: Shot 10, and Shot 15. Both look like they're about 1 frame off.

If anyone has an NTSC version I would love to get screenshots of that one up as well.

R2D2, thank you very much for the screenshots. Both you and boris have done a great service getting these up so quickly for everyone to see. I will return the favor by uploading these to my comparison site as soon as possible. That is of course if RapidShare will allow me to download all of those files. At present, it says I have exceeded my allowed limit and must wait 6 minutes to download the second file.

By the way Zion, there's no such thing as an "uncompressed" JPEG... even a quality 100 JPEG saves colour at 1/4 resolution as it does brightness (the same as TV).
I used that terminology on the site, didn't I? I'll have to revise it.
