I missed that one, sorry. The truth is we're not really using AviSynth for much at the moment, other than to assemble and create our TC Print. Our video is running through other programs like Adobe Premiere for color correction, Combustion for cleanup, and Black Magic for the SC/DC merging.

I usually don't watch anything on TV besides sports. But over the summer I got sucked into this show and watched seasons 1 and 2 on DVD. So now I guess I'll be watching this show every week.

That first episode was really weird. First the village, then the zoo/aquarium place. I know this episode is just designed for you to go "what the hell is going on?!" and I have to say they succeeded in doing just that.

The best place to find out about DVD media is NoMoreCoasters.com

It isn't necessarily the brand that designates the quality, but the manufacturer of the discs. Most media brands don't actually make their own discs, and some actually use multiple manufacturers.

It is the media ID that is important, as it reveals the disc manufacturer. Unfortunately, this is not written on packaging or anywhere else. Companies want consumers to be oblivious to this sort of behind-the-scenes information. To learn the media ID code, a blank disc must be put into a computer DVD burner drive and the ID read by a special utility. Some burning software reads the code by default (DVD Decrypter, for example, in ISO write mode). There are also a handful of freeware or trialware tools available: DVD Identifier (free), DVDInfo (free), DVDInfoPro (trial)
For Macintosh OS X: DVD Media Inspector (free)

Now that you're paranoid about what brands you buy, the brands you should be able to trust are Taiyo Yuden, Sony, Verbatim, TDK, and to a lesser extent Ritek/RiData. I've used Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, and Ritek discs with my BenQ DW1640 drive and have probably only had about 3 coasters over the last two years.

My guess is that unless the HD makes weird noises when you turn it on, it's just the case/firewire interface that's the problem. I'm almost positive that if you installed it directly into the motherboard it would work just fine. You might also try just going to "add new hardware" and see if it can locate the drive. I have this weird glitch on my system (WinXP Pro) where it will not recognize my 4th HD when it first boots up. When I initiate the "add new hardware" wizard, somehow it magically pops up on My Computer before the wizard actually starts searching for hardware. Anyway, let us know what happens.

I've been asked a few times in the past to write a guide using After Effects, though I've always had to brush it aside because I'm working on other projects. Perhaps one of these days it will become a reality, though as you may know by now, nothing I do is ever quick or easy.

I have posted my thoughts on the process in that thread. The technique Rune posted is very similar to what we are already doing in combining the Special Collection, which is a very detailed laserdisc (and dare I say more detailed than the GOUT DVD), with the Definitive Collection. While the DC video is very clean, the colors themselves are not the most accurate compared to the original film. So what we're doing is actually going a step further to color correct the DC colors to look more like what some of us saw in theaters.

We are hoping to get some screenshots and video clips of this process up soon.

Welcome to the forums Rune! It looks like you've done some outstanding work.

This is very similar to work we are doing on the X0 Project. Though we are using different software, the concept is pretty much the same. This is probably the best method of taking a source with better detail and combining it with one with "better" color. The major drawback to this method, of course, is that no two sources are the same as far as cropping and warping go. Compensating for those two factors are indeed the toughest to overcome.

But it's amazing what kind of results you can get, isn't it?

True, the soundtrack is a huge part of the whole saga. But the acting in the OT is far superior and there aren't any lines that make you turn your head in disgust.

I don't hate the PT, though I thought all three were dissapointing films - especially ROTS. I feel that each has its moments amidst its many flaws, but overall I thought they were decent films and I own all of them.

I think Lucas is a horrible director in his old age. Or maybe it has something to do with there not being anyone to question his decision-making. But the acting in all three films was subpar at best and there are countless lines that are just awful. The action carries these films, not the characters, and an outstanding soundtrack makes up for a lot of things that might otherwise be too distracting to tolerate.

Laserdisc never appealed to the general public because it stayed expensive and it wasn't a convenient way to watch movies with the bulky discs and so many side changes. Next-gen DVD formats appeal to anyone who owns an HDTV and wants something that matches the quality of their TV programming. Prices for both Blu-ray and HD-DVD players and media are bound to drop gradually over the course of the next few years, just like any new technology has in the last ten years. Eventually, players will get to the point where they're inexpensive enough for people to replace their existing DVD player, especially since they're backward compatible and you won't have to upgrade your entire library of DVDs. Until then, videophiles will determine the outcome of the next-gen media war.

Lol, I don't think any slasher movie is supposed to be analyzed in that great a detail. You could come up with just as many questions with any Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, or Hellraiser film if you really wanted to. Scary movies like those are almost cheesy on purpose.

Only in the sense that DVD once was primarily for videophiles when it first came out and players cost hundreds of dollars. If the evolution of DVD is anything to go on, five years from now Blu-ray players (or HDDVD, in the unlikely event it wins out) will most likely cost less than $200 and there will be more Blu-ray media for sale in stores than DVDs.

Risky? Hardly. First of all, the only new format it can be released on is Blu-Ray because both Lucas and Fox have pledged their support of that format. Second, something as mega-popular as Star Wars could only HELP a format like Blu-ray become more popular. People aren't going to buy one machine over the other because they like a certain player better than the other. They're going to buy whicever one has more attractive media or simply more titles in general.

Now, if they release the box set ONLY on Blu-ray and not DVD, that would seriously impact the amount of sales and most likely wouldn't be worth it. Not to metion the fact that single-disc releases on Blu-ray hover around $30. A box set would probably be close to $150. From a marketing standpoint, it would be wise for them to release it on both Blu-ray and DVD to maximize sales while at the same time helping the success of Blu-ray and catering to videophiles.

If there isn't an official release, people will author their own using the HD broadcasts as soon as recordable next-gen DVD media becomes practical.

Regardless of whether it's reliable or not, my only point was that anyone who posts something like this needs to cite where they get their information if they want to be taken seriously.

As far as Wikipedia is concerned, just because something is on there and hasn't been edited doesn't mean it's true. That article may be nothing more than the accepted opinion of those who frequent the Star Wars pages of Wikipedia. Hardly something to be taken as gospel...

Yes, an explanation to go along with your screenshots would help.

At first glance, I believe both of your first two screenshots are cadence changes in the DC LDs, and there is actually one frame missing from the DC LD one frame before those shots compared to other video releases. I assume those specific frames are missing from the GOUT?
