Good capture card?
Time
My answer to your question would pretty much be what I posted in that second paragraph. The PDI Deluxe is the best capture card I've ever used. Aside from that and the Black Magic boards (which are more expensive than the PDI I believe), you're going to see a lot of similarly priced capture cards in the $30-$50 range that will give about the same results. I don't know of any USB devices that are similar. You might try out one of the bargain basement PCI cards just to see what kind of a result you can get. In theory, a card that doesn't have a TV tuner or any other bells a whistles that interfere with the capturing process would do the best job.

MF.com was created by darthpsychotic, a guy who's had his own share of runins with TFN. This thread on MF.com about prequel spoiler history is a pretty good description of what's happened between sites like MF, TFN, Episode-X.com, Aldera.net, starwars.com forums, TBone's site, and other spinoff boards.

Ghosting problem
Time
I too have a CLD-D704 and have had similar problems. I asked a laserdisc repair expert about it and he said that this is an unknown problem that happens with certain players while playing CLV discs. There is no way to fix this problem unfortunately. The problem doesn't occur with CAV discs though.

My only suggestion would be to try capturing with a regular composite cable instead of s-video and see if that helps any. Using a composite cable allows you to utilize your capture device's comb filter instead of the much older one found in the LD player, which usually results in a better capture and less dot crawl.

Why the hell do you even care what we do, DanielB? That's like asking a classic car buff why he spends every minute of his free time fixing up an old wreck when he could just go out and buy a fixed-up car. It's a hobby! It's something we enjoy doing. It's the reason any fan editor does anything on this site. We do it because we enjoy it. Damned if we have to sit here and discuss the legitimacy of why we do what we do with people like you.

Info: Auto-correction from SE colours to GOUT colours (lots of information)
Time
As I said, these were PRELIMINARY shots I made before I had access to the X0 capture of the SC. Of course our SC capture looks much better. And cleanup of the SC is a major part of our work right now as well, so don't read too much into how "dirty" the SC looks here. What I wanted you to notice in these shots was the increased level of detail, the recovery of stars, recovery of overblown whites, and the elimination of ghosting - all flaws apparent throughout the DC and GOUT versions.

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with next Rune.

For reference, here are some preliminary shots I did about four months ago. No warping or color correction here, just a straight crop and merge of the X0 DC chroma and DarkJedi SC luma (merged image is on bottom):

As you can see, the alignment is off. But this technique has the potential for some outstanding results if done properly.

LOST
Time
I usually don't watch anything on TV besides sports. But over the summer I got sucked into this show and watched seasons 1 and 2 on DVD. So now I guess I'll be watching this show every week.

That first episode was really weird. First the village, then the zoo/aquarium place. I know this episode is just designed for you to go "what the hell is going on?!" and I have to say they succeeded in doing just that.

"I'm a repo man!"

The Best DVD-R's
Time
The best place to find out about DVD media is NoMoreCoasters.com

It isn't necessarily the brand that designates the quality, but the manufacturer of the discs. Most media brands don't actually make their own discs, and some actually use multiple manufacturers.
From NoMoreCoasters.com:
It is the media ID that is important, as it reveals the disc manufacturer. Unfortunately, this is not written on packaging or anywhere else. Companies want consumers to be oblivious to this sort of behind-the-scenes information. To learn the media ID code, a blank disc must be put into a computer DVD burner drive and the ID read by a special utility. Some burning software reads the code by default (DVD Decrypter, for example, in ISO write mode). There are also a handful of freeware or trialware tools available: DVD Identifier (free), DVDInfo (free), DVDInfoPro (trial)
For Macintosh OS X: DVD Media Inspector (free)

Now that you're paranoid about what brands you buy, the brands you should be able to trust are Taiyo Yuden, Sony, Verbatim, TDK, and to a lesser extent Ritek/RiData. I've used Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, and Ritek discs with my BenQ DW1640 drive and have probably only had about 3 coasters over the last two years.

External HD
Time
My guess is that unless the HD makes weird noises when you turn it on, it's just the case/firewire interface that's the problem. I'm almost positive that if you installed it directly into the motherboard it would work just fine. You might also try just going to "add new hardware" and see if it can locate the drive. I have this weird glitch on my system (WinXP Pro) where it will not recognize my 4th HD when it first boots up. When I initiate the "add new hardware" wizard, somehow it magically pops up on My Computer before the wizard actually starts searching for hardware. Anyway, let us know what happens.

I have posted my thoughts on the process in that thread. The technique Rune posted is very similar to what we are already doing in combining the Special Collection, which is a very detailed laserdisc (and dare I say more detailed than the GOUT DVD), with the Definitive Collection. While the DC video is very clean, the colors themselves are not the most accurate compared to the original film. So what we're doing is actually going a step further to color correct the DC colors to look more like what some of us saw in theaters.

We are hoping to get some screenshots and video clips of this process up soon.
