How much does it cost Lucasfilm to make a DVD?

I was wondering if any of you know how much it costs Lucasfilm to produce each of their DVDs of their '04 special editions? I heard that they make a huge profit on each DVD that they sell. I bet Lucas outsources most, if not, all of the manufacturing of his merchandising and the things he sells only cost him pennies on the dollar of profit he makes off the stuff.

Sorry if this is in the wrong thread. I'm not sure if this should go here or in the General SW thread. I have come here often and decided to join because I don’t believe a question like this has ever been asked.

Of course everything is outsourced. No studio has their own disc pressing factory or t-shirt print shop on site. Like any other studio, Lucasfilm (or perhaps 20th Century Fox) pays some other company to print the discs, package, and deliver them to stores. You could have left Lucasfilm out of your question entirely and asked, "How much does it cost to make a DVD? I heard that studios make a huge profit on each DVD they sell." And it's true that they do, because it costs maybe a couple bucks at most to press a disc, print the artwork, and package it in a case. It doesn't cost Lucasfilm any more or less than any other studio to make DVDs.

Of course, producing a DVD requires a certain amount of pre-mastering and design before it can be sent off for printing. You have to pay someone (like Lowry Digital) to transfer and clean up your prints, someone else to master the audio and video, someone else (like Van Ling) to create the DVD menus, and someone else to compile all the materials and author and encode the disc. Who knows how many hundreds of thousands of dollars they paid for all that, but the pre-mastering work on the 2004 DVDs was outstanding. Unfortunately it was a handful of "deliberate creative decisions" that were the problem. But of course sales of the DVDs in 2004 set records and millions were sold around the world.

Now think about the most recent release of the GOUT. Basically all they did was take the LD master tapes and combine them with some super-cheesy menus that were probably whipped up by some bargain-basement design studio in a day or two, and presto: a super-cheap authored DVD master to combine with the existing SE DVDS.

But now that that's already been done and they have masters ready to go, every time they re-release the DVDs, all they're paying is the cost to manufacture the discs and packaging. Are they making a huge profit off of them? Based on how much it costs to produce them, of course they are.

And guess what? Even though they've been re-released every year for the last three years, people are still buying them.

Video Games - a general discussion thread

I had no idea what to expect when I bought Prime 2. I just knew that I loved Prime and even if it was a rehash of the same game I would love it. I think it's great so far, and the addition of the Light/Dark parallel worlds is great. It's a lot harder too. I find myself dying way more often than the first one. I just spent a good couple of hours trying to beat the slug/moth thing and probably an hour on the boss before that.

Most of the later ones have riffs that reference many things besides just pop culture. Mike was known for throwing Shakespeare references in all the time. There were countless LOTR references (now I know who the hell Frodo is ), as well as other stuff not everyone would get. You could watch the same episode multiple times and get something new out of it each time.

Every time I talk about the show with my brother, he always asks me if I have a certain episode that we remember seeing on TV way back in the day. I really don't remember the movie that well, but there is one part where an old man and an old lady are sitting in their living room and all of a sudden the house blows up. I think it's servo who says, "Ah! Forgot about those cookies!" When we first saw it on TV, we were laughing for a good 5 minutes. Now that I have every episode on DVD, I can't seem to find that one. Anybody recall which one this is?

I like Mike better I think, but mostly because by then they had the format down pat and Mike was the head writer for a lot of Joel's episodes anyway. Not to take anything away from Joel - the guy created the show and some of my favorite episodes are his. The last three seasons of the show are much better than the rest though I think.

I'll have to look over my list when I get home from work, but ones that immediately come to mind are "Mitchell", "Prince of Space", "Santa Clause Conquers the Martians", "The Incredibly Strange People Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies", and the one with the wannabe James Bond guy (can't remember the title right now). Also, the first 10 minutes of "Teenagers From Outer Space" is gold.

I definitely see the distinct lines on the X0 capture. Note: there are two different wide shots - the first one is right after R2 comes out and the second is a few seconds later after the applause and the 3-shot of Han, Luke, and Leia. The first one, which most of your screens above are from, is a bit clearer and you can see the lines quite distinctly. The second shot, which your PAL GOUT and EditDroid screens are from, is not as clear and the lines are harder to make out. The X0 raw capture does look clearer than your GOUT shots. The final X0 will obviously look even better.

I had to take Vista off my computer. Nero wouldn't install even after I downloaded the Vista-certified update. Besides that, ASPI drivers didn't seem to want to install, and half the freeware video programs I use either wouldn't work or plugins for them wouldn't work. Of course all this came after I posted earlier about not having any problems....
