My theory is that it's a straight telecine from the original film. When it was done, who knows. I believe the EOD crawl is original as well. I remember zombie had some info on that way back when. I can't remember what I found when I compared the two, but the GOUT crawl lines up exactly with the '77 telecine - stars, wobble and all.

Edit: I don't really remember what Boris did to back up his theory, but I do remember that most of us were convinced it was a generated crawl - myself included. But I did my own research and lined up the GOUT crawl with my copy of the old crappy '77 telecine DVD. When I squished the GOUT to match the aspect ratio of the old VHS transfer, they wobbled exactly the same, and specks of dust and scratches in the film were in the same place.

The Future™ Thread
Time
Anyone ever happened upon those old newsgroup posts from 1983 with people talking about ROTJ? That was a pretty good read. People trying to get together and go to the theater that had the 70mm print, people discussing how they loved it or hated it, and so on. Not much different than message boards today, except nobody posted anything like "OMG ROFLMAO LOLERZ liek GL rapped my childhood!!!1"

Kind of makes you wonder, what will people 50 years from now think of today's internet slang? What will their slang be like? Or maybe it'll be like Back to the Future: "You mean you have to use your hands? That's like a baby's toy!"

Mark this down kids, I say if anyone finds this thread 50 years from now and reads this, if you can track me down I will give you $100 plus inflation.

I'm serious.

As others have said, the countless other sources including location photos point to the fact that these scenes were shot in daylight. Comparing other shots between the JSC and the DC/GOUT, there is a definite color difference as far as hue and saturation are concerned. But these two scenes clearly have more differences than that. I'm 99.9% convinced that GL had this done deliberately for the THX LD release.

These aren't the only differences between the two versions either. There are other changes to the film in the '93 version I may point out another time.

Btw does X0 have Episode IV in the beginning?

Yes, we have toyed with doing an EditDroid type thing where you can choose which crawl to watch, but we haven't decided anything yet. If nothing else, we will use the "A New Hope" version from the LDs.

BTW, I don't care what anyone else says, but the crawl on the GOUT is the original crawl, not a recreation.

I would have to go back and look at the 97SE, but there are clear differences between the '86 Japanese Special Collection LD and the '93 THX LDs - both of which are obviously different from the 2004 DVDs as well.

The most obvious changes are in the beginning of the film. The canyon scene with R2 and the Jawas was altered in '93 to make it appear later at night. Also, the wide shots of Luke and 3PO outside the homestead were altered to better match the closeups.

I thought it was great. Not only did they do a good job switching between the stories, but the thing with the monster was awesome.

The writers seem to love changing things up all the time, not that it should surprise anyone at this point. I thought Locke leaving was pretty weird, but I was pretty sure something else was gonna happen with the two lovebirds who were buried alive. I guess they're really dead.

You can see the effects of the DVNR in the ring as well as the trooper's "mouth".

The JSC is very dirty, but in fact it has a lot more detail than the Definitive Collection, Faces, and even the GOUT DVD, which is why we're using it. It is also the source closest to the original film colors, which were altered in '93, again in '97, and yet again in 2004. I guess we didn't explain it very well, but these screens are after shots of the LD transfer, sans color correction. These are shots that Laserman worked on with the Black Magic workstation, which combined elements from multiple laserdisc sources as well as the GOUT DVD I believe. The cleanup and preparation of the LD captures is a lengthy process which we will explain in the next article.

That being said, I wager ROTJ getting done before the new forums.
I wager the new forum software will be out before our t-shirts will... (And the shirts will be ready by C4.)

As far as the email I posted, it's a mockup from two actual emails I received from Lucasfilm. But not for the X0 Project - apparently I had unauthorized images posted on my personal site's Image Archive (which LFL would never elaborate on and nothing was ever done).

If this IS true, I am also officially done with caring about anything Star Wars. HUGE disappointment. It's comments like this that make me want to finish the Project as soon as possible. Thanks to everyone for their continued support.

Any updates on Laserman's health? God bless you guys, I wish the X0 team well....
If we don't hear from him for three weeks, its probably a good thing because it means he's getting the proper treatment and rest. The guy does above and beyond what others might do in his condition.

OK joke over. Sorry it stayed up so long. I guess you could say we stuck it out a little longer than normal to symbolize our legendary commitment to what we do and our usual seemingly-glacial pace.

We're not quitting and the project is not canceled.

Besides, if you were able to get quality shots like this from a laserdisc, I don't think you'd quit either:

The main site will be updated with new content and a few new surprises as soon as I can get to it.

It is after much thought and with heavy hearts that the X0 Project Team has decided to call it quits. After three years of work and nothing to show for it, we've decided to move on. The X0 Project was a great idea in the beginning, and over the last few years we've seen and done a lot of awesome things - things nobody has ever done in a fan edit or preservation project. But while our intentions were great, our work of late hasn't been.

Unfortunately our fire has gone out of the universe, and we're giving up. Thanks to everyone for their support. No thanks to those of you who mocked us from the beginning. I guess you win.

Adieu.
