The HS isn’t even a film.

IMDb considers it a film. Rotten Tomatoes considers it a film. Wikipedia considers it a film.

It’s a film.

Wrong. Wikipedia considers it a “musical television film”. IMDB considers it a “TV movie”. Rotten Tomatoes doens’t use the words “film” nor “movie”, but “television”.

Hollywood Report considers it a “show”. House Next Door considers it a “nightmare vision” (which is probably the best word to describe it).

MalàStrana is definitely right, you are trolling.

Neither the OT nor the EU were butchered to conform to the Holiday Special or include “holidayisms”, so your argument is invalid.

That’s not in the OT.

  • Death of Chief Bast aboard the Death Star needs to be reconsidered, as he appeared in SWHS a year later.

That’s not in the OT.

  • Kashyyyk, as shown in SWHS (and drawn by Ralph McQuarrie), eventually appeared in ROTS.

That’s not in the OT.

  • According to “The Visual Dictionary of Star Wars, Episode III”, Itchy appeared in ROTS.

That’s not in the OT.

  • Lumpa appeared in several EU literature, and Waroo is a canonical character since Aftermath: Empire’s End.

That’s not in the OT.

That’s not in the OT.

So it seems that both OT and EU include several mentions to SWHS

None of that was in the OT.

Dear ray_afraid, DuracellEnergized wrote “Neither the OT nor the EU”.
“nor the EU”.
I repeat : “nor the EU”.
“nor the EU”.
“nor the EU”.

So I gave some examples of EU that include “holidayisms” (his word).
BTW, death of Chief Bast aboard the Death Star IS in the OT. Boba Fett IS in the OT. According to John Doom, Kashyyyk IS mentioned in the OT.

JEDIT: and Frink is right: HS is not even a film.

So it seems that both OT and EU include several mentions to SWHS, and pose some problems that required a revision or a later explanation, such as Chief Bast’s death or Itchy in a catamaran…

Anyone else totally disregard Leia being Luke's sister?

Sorry, didn’t know the rule where to have an emotionally satisfying story, you must know every characters’ parents. Thanks for the heads up, will not make this mistake again.

Of course! Think about “The Young and the Restless”: we know every details about parents, children, lovers, sisters, brothers, hidden cousins, colleagues, neighbors and dogs.
THAT is what I call an emotionally satisfying story. And there is more than 20 000 episodes! So much better than this tiny weak story about a “Force” whom I don’t even know the last name…

My thoughts on various changes
Time

Between 1983 and 2004, the apparition of Shaw has not bothered anyone, everyone understood he obviously was Anakin and NOBODY never said, before 2004: "Hey, it’s not logical."
I was 9 in 1983, and I didn’t have to ask to my father “Hey, who is this ghost next to Obi Wan ?”. He was the ghost of Anakin, and it was obvious because I already saw Shaw’s face 5 minutes before, when Anakin died in Luke’s hands.

I do not understand how replacing Shaw with Christensen in 2004 could make more sense of something that made perfect sense without this change …

Info Wanted: All versions of Original Trilogy?
Time

In addition to ger-el’s message, there are may other versions of the unaltered movies (16mm preservation by Puggo Grande, LaserDisc preservations, VHS preservations…), which have a true historical interest and are very enjoyable, but are less “comfortable” to watch if you just want to have a theatrical-like experience.

IMHO, if you just want to enjoy the unaltered movies with good image and sound, the best choices are :

  • ANH: Harmy’s Despecialized Edition 2.7 (more “Blu-Ray like” with sharp and clean image) or Team Negative 1 35mm scan 1.6 (more “theatrical experience” with grain)
  • ESB: Harmy’s DE 2.0 (more “Blu-Ray like” with sharp and clean image) or Team Negative 1 Dreamastered v2 (more “theatrical experience” with grain)
  • ROTJ: Harmy’s DE 2.5 (it is the only choice, because the Grindhouse version is not yet cleaned/regraded)

You can find all versions on MySpleen, Usenet or some public torrents.

But here’s the problem: generally neither you should think that, since you don’t like something, everyone should agree 100% with you and that you should dismiss the others’ opinions like they are fooling themselves.

I don’t want to get into a debate about it being objectively bad vs. subjectively bad (which has been done in this thread many times already), I’ll just leave things there.

So your opinion is objective, mine is subjective…

You are allmighty Frink.

To be fair, I barely play video games anymore, so when I call AOTC and ROTS video game movies I’m mainly referring to the cutscene-quality plastic-ish look they have…mainly due to how much they are filmed either entirely in a computer or on soundstages with nothing more than platforms and greenscreens.

Rogue 1 looks much more real.

I agree (except for Lea and Tarkin)!

But I prefer the story of AOTC and ROTS (with politics, romance, treasons, even if it is badly told) than R1 where there is basically no story at all.
