Things you DISLIKE about the Original Trilogy ( but not the Ewoks, Leia and Luke being siblings, Death Star 2 etc.)
Time

The only thing I really dislike that I can think of right now is in Jedi, and it’s not even what most people have issues with. (I’m fine with ewoks) I really wish Luke were more angry with Ben when they’re having their talk on Dagobah. He’s like, “you told me Darth Vader murdered my father” but he doesn’t sound very angry, the whole scene is too monotone, the only scene in the originals that reminds me of the prequels. I wish he’d act in a way more akin to how he is on the Falcon at the end of Empire. (when he’s crying, "why didn’t you tell me?)

What does everyone think of the "last Beatles song", Now and Then?
Time

I’ve only listened to it once, but I had a mostly positive first listen. I’m a huge Beatle fan, but wasn’t alive for original releases, so it’s cool to be able to say I was here for a new Beatle release.

(If you think this is a redundant thread because there are already Beatle threads, I can take it down; I just thought this deserved its own discussion)

<strong>Return Of The Jedi</strong> - a general <strong>Random Thoughts</strong> thread
Time

I just thought of something. When Luke and friends are on the skiff, and he tells Han, “there’s nothing to see, I used to live here, you know” doesn’t Han know what Tatooine looks like? He’s hung out there before, in the first movie.
I’ve rationalized this to say that sure, he’s been to Mos Eisley, but hot the “middle-of-nowhere” parts like the endless sand dunes where Luke’s home was. (I don’t want there to be an issue with this line exchange because I love it)

At what point did Tatooine robes become Jedi uniforms?
Time

The original trilogy seems to indicate that Ben was only wearing those robes because it was what you wear in the desert; Uncle Owen was too.
I know this has been widely debated if this is dumb or not (I think it is).
Sure, Anakin’s ghost is seen in robes at the end of Jedi but he did live on Tatooine, so that wouldn’t have to mean it’s the jedi outfit.

Does anyone know at what point George decided that the robes would be the Jedi uniforms? I believe there’s some early concept art for Episode I showing the Jedi wearing something resembling what Luke wears in Jedi, but correct me if I’m wrong.

“Set your lightsabers to ‘baseball bat’.”

I know you’re just making a joke here, but that would be really cool if you could put a lightsaber on different settings like a phaser; which would explain why it has different levels of power in different scenes. I love this concept probably more than I should.

Does C-3PO have feelings?

I love the idea that being around humans gave Threepio specifically and other droids theories, as it’s totally plausible they would be built like that in order to work more efficiently.
Now the real answer probably is the none of this was really thought about, but since I am a large science fiction fan, I wanted to come up with a true sci-fi explanation.

ROTJ: Connecting Act I with the rest of the movie
Time

Channel72 said:

By the time of ROTJ, it’s been like 3 years since Boba Fett delivered Han. (At least if we ignore supplementary material like Shadows of the Empire.) So the fact that Boba Fett is still hanging around at Jabba’s palace by the time of ROTJ would seem to indicate some kind of permanent employment with Jabba. There’s also that ridiculous scene in the Special Edition of A New Hope where we see Boba Fett as part of Jabba’s entourage. So we can infer from all this that Boba Fett fights Luke on the skiff in ROTJ because his duties include general security or protection for Jabba.

I recall that George Lucas stated somewhere that, when writing ROTJ, Boba Fett was considered basically just a random goon and nothing more. Strangely, the script for ROTJ acts like many events in ESB never happened. For example, Boba Fett doesn’t recognize Lando, and doesn’t seem to have any relationship with Vader anymore.

It’s weird because in the late 1979/early 1980 promotional material for ESB, Boba Fett was always advertised as working for Darth Vader. He was never associated with Jabba the Hutt. And in the 1978 Holiday Special (Boba Fett’s first appearance), Fett is associated with Vader, not Jabba.

But the A New Hope Special Edition scene from 1997 implies Boba Fett worked for Jabba in some capacity well before Vader hired him in ESB. And of course, ESB itself implies Boba Fett works for BOTH Vader and Jabba (and the “No disintegration!” line implies a prior relationship between Fett and Vader). But the earliest 1978/1979 promotional material emphasizes Boba Fett’s connection with Vader. Yet by the time ROTJ came out, Fett’s connection with Vader was essentially forgotten by the script.

Basically, Fett was originally marketed as Darth Vader’s minion, from 1978 thru 1980 when Empire Strikes Back was released. But then in ROTJ, Boba Fett works for Jabba in some semi-permanent capacity, and his relationship with Vader is never acknowledged.

Very interesting stuff there, I did not think about the special edition scene adding Boba Fett to Star Wars, which means that George Lucas wants him to be employed specifically by Jabba. I hate that, and don’t consider it canon, but still interesting to note.

I’ve always taken the “No disintegrations” line just to imply that Boba Fett is notorious for disintegrating his bounties, not any previous relation with Vader, even though the Holiday Special shows one of course. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think anyone actually refers to him as Boba Fett in Empire? Han goes, “Boba Fett, where!?” in Jedi(which then means he knows him, and has a history with him…) but Darth Vader I know says, “He’s all yours, bounty hunter” instead of his name.

I still find it hard to believe there’s 3 years between Empire and Jedi, did it really take that long to rescue Han? But the idea that his relationship with Jabba was strengthened between films is a plausible theory. Another being he just hasn’t been paid yet, and Jabba is making him protect him if he wants to get his payment.

ROTJ: Connecting Act I with the rest of the movie
Time

I was just watching Return of the Jedi again this weekend actually, and I was thinking about Boba Fett; mainly, like why does he stay at the palace? Jabba presumably paid him for delivering Han, so why does he stay? Just for the party? Fine, sure, but then when Luke and co. fight back on the skiff he flies down to help Jabba. Why?
Maybe he’s there because of this idea that he was originally gonna play a larger role.
(I was gonna make this "Why Does Boba Fett Stay? thing into a separate thread, but I saw this and it fit in)

Does C-3PO have feelings?
Time

LexX said:

3PO in SW is a lot different than in the sequels. Much more sci-fi/robotic and more monotone. Later he became more approachable and human.

That’s an interesting point. Much of his emotion seems to come from past experiences, which would work for a droid. Like “I’ve forgotten how much I hate space travel” would come from having known it hasn’t been pleasant in the past.
However, hanging around humans so much would likely result in him potentially becoming more human, if that’s the way he was programmed. He still keeps a bit of a robotic nature though (In Empire he says Luke is clever “for a human being, that is”) and he really mainly cares about himself(see the whole third act of Empire, when he’s complaining about being on backwards as Han is being frozen alive)

And other droids for that matter. I was just thinking about this watching other sci-fi stuff like the Logan’s run show for example, with the android character REM, who is shown to have some form of feeling despite being robotic. (Much like how Spock acts, though it makes sense for him, being half human)
Then I was thinking about how in Star Wars, Threepio worries and frets a lot. Fear is an emotion, something one has to have feelings to, well, feel. I know people will argue Star Wars is more fantasy than true science fiction, but I’ve always argued that point. Thoughts?

Prequels or Sequels; Which do you prefer - and why?
Time

I agree with pretty much everything Caston said; I’d pick the sequels too. I don’t “like” any of these; but my favorite movie after the originals is the Force Awakens(It’s much lower though), and I like that way more than I like any of the sequels. The middle episode is the low point for both trilogies, and it’s an insanely low point.

The prequels are more damaging overall also, for the reasons mentioned above(the stupid changes made in 2004 to better “fit” the originals with them) and just the fact they were supposed to be the important backstory. Episodes 7,8 and 9 can very easily be ignored. But like it or not, Empire has Episode V in its opening and VI in Jedi. (Depends which version you watch for SW, even prior to the special editions)

Also, I really hate how George Lucas tried to reframe the saga as “The Tragedy of Darth Vader” when the originals were clearly written for Luke to be the main character. This isn’t a big thing for which trilogy I prefer, merely a reason I hate the prequels and what they did to the series.

Both trilogies ruin a lot of characters, so I’m not sure which is the biggest offender. My head tells me the new ones, but because the prequels take place before the originals, I’m inclined to say those.

25 Years of the Special Edition

I forgot to add “with George’s blessing.”

If he’s still okay with how everything looks 26 years later then that’s probably how the cgi shots will look forever. I doubt he wants to bother with it anymore.

Ah, okay, sorry about that. Not sure, since he seems to be constantly changing his mind. Would he have kept cutting one second out of the Greedo scene if nobody said anything? That’s another question, because he really doesn’t seem to care much about what the fans think(If at all).

I know that has nothing to do with your question on effects, but it seems a relevant point to bring up. It is weird though why he said the 70s/80s effects “bothered” him for so many years, but the 1997 cgi dinosaurs don’t? Of course this is the same man who through Jar Jar Binks, Dexter Jetsker and General Grievance looked good.

On the Jabba matter: I like the mold of the '04 version better, but the colors look better in the '97 one. They’re both dumb and shouldn’t be in the movie. It’s really hard for me to imagine that as the same character we see in Jedi.

25 Years of the Special Edition

I also remember wondering if the special edition would be considered the official version going forward but seeing that first TPM teaser on Entertainment Tonight in November of ‘98 pretty definitively answered that question for me.

Do you think LFL/Disney would ever commission ILM to do a complete re-do of the SE? Re-rendering the ‘97 cg shots at late 2000’s / early 2010’s quality would not only be cost-effective but also wouldn’t exceed the resolution of the ST and the cg wouldn’t go from ‘99 to ‘05 quality only to revert to ‘97 quality for modern viewers watching the saga in official order for the first time.

Before you say “but what about ‘04 Jabba?”, well, I still think the ‘97 version looked better.

I highly doubt that would ever happen. Kathleen Kennedy’s often misunderstood quote of, “I wouldn’t touch those, they´re his” (or something to that effect) means LFL under Disney wouldn’t make any new changes to the movies. It does NOT mean they would never release the originals. That isn’t changing the movies, that’s giving another cut which has existed for over 40 years.

Whether it’s a great movie or not; I don’t think I’d say it’s great but I do believe it’s a great sequel. This may sound like a dumb thing to say, but I’ll explain what I mean.

I feel it’s exactly what would have happened to Sheriff Brody after the experience he had in Jaws. I love the scene where he yells for everyone to get out of the water, and various other “false alarm” moments because of the trauma he’s experiencing. My favorite part is when he tells the board meeting he knows what a shark looks like and he doesn’t intend “to go through that hell again!”

There’s not even a payoff for the Mr. Potter character. When I saw it, I was like “WTF movie, aren’t you even gonna give me the pleasure to see the “evil” Mr. Potter get punishment?”

I know this is a really old comment, but I just had to reply. You’ve got to watch the SNL “lost ending” of Wonderful Life from the 80s where everybody goes to give Potter what’s coming to him. It’s hilarious.
I love the movie, I watch it every year, so I was sad to read your hate for it. But even though I love it, I felt this way about Potter too, especially when I was younger.
