And other droids for that matter. I was just thinking about this watching other sci-fi stuff like the Logan’s run show for example, with the android character REM, who is shown to have some form of feeling despite being robotic. (Much like how Spock acts, though it makes sense for him, being half human)
Then I was thinking about how in Star Wars, Threepio worries and frets a lot. Fear is an emotion, something one has to have feelings to, well, feel. I know people will argue Star Wars is more fantasy than true science fiction, but I’ve always argued that point. Thoughts?
Rubber Soul is fantastic. I’m partial to Michelle on that one, and I agree In My Life is top notch Beatles. What’s everyone else’s favorite album? Considering the album as a whole, I’d say Sgt. Pepper. (Also because it contains my favorite song, A Day in the Life)
I agree with pretty much everything Caston said; I’d pick the sequels too. I don’t “like” any of these; but my favorite movie after the originals is the Force Awakens(It’s much lower though), and I like that way more than I like any of the sequels. The middle episode is the low point for both trilogies, and it’s an insanely low point.
The prequels are more damaging overall also, for the reasons mentioned above(the stupid changes made in 2004 to better “fit” the originals with them) and just the fact they were supposed to be the important backstory. Episodes 7,8 and 9 can very easily be ignored. But like it or not, Empire has Episode V in its opening and VI in Jedi. (Depends which version you watch for SW, even prior to the special editions)
Also, I really hate how George Lucas tried to reframe the saga as “The Tragedy of Darth Vader” when the originals were clearly written for Luke to be the main character. This isn’t a big thing for which trilogy I prefer, merely a reason I hate the prequels and what they did to the series.
Both trilogies ruin a lot of characters, so I’m not sure which is the biggest offender. My head tells me the new ones, but because the prequels take place before the originals, I’m inclined to say those.
Has anyone heard those rumours of Disney being so bankrupt now they’re considering selling back? HIGHLY doubt that would happen but I’ve seen some articles on it.
I forgot to add “with George’s blessing.”
If he’s still okay with how everything looks 26 years later then that’s probably how the cgi shots will look forever. I doubt he wants to bother with it anymore.
Ah, okay, sorry about that. Not sure, since he seems to be constantly changing his mind. Would he have kept cutting one second out of the Greedo scene if nobody said anything? That’s another question, because he really doesn’t seem to care much about what the fans think(If at all).
I know that has nothing to do with your question on effects, but it seems a relevant point to bring up. It is weird though why he said the 70s/80s effects “bothered” him for so many years, but the 1997 cgi dinosaurs don’t? Of course this is the same man who through Jar Jar Binks, Dexter Jetsker and General Grievance looked good.
On the Jabba matter: I like the mold of the '04 version better, but the colors look better in the '97 one. They’re both dumb and shouldn’t be in the movie. It’s really hard for me to imagine that as the same character we see in Jedi.
I also remember wondering if the special edition would be considered the official version going forward but seeing that first TPM teaser on Entertainment Tonight in November of ‘98 pretty definitively answered that question for me.
Do you think LFL/Disney would ever commission ILM to do a complete re-do of the SE? Re-rendering the ‘97 cg shots at late 2000’s / early 2010’s quality would not only be cost-effective but also wouldn’t exceed the resolution of the ST and the cg wouldn’t go from ‘99 to ‘05 quality only to revert to ‘97 quality for modern viewers watching the saga in official order for the first time.
Before you say “but what about ‘04 Jabba?”, well, I still think the ‘97 version looked better.
I highly doubt that would ever happen. Kathleen Kennedy’s often misunderstood quote of, “I wouldn’t touch those, they´re his” (or something to that effect) means LFL under Disney wouldn’t make any new changes to the movies. It does NOT mean they would never release the originals. That isn’t changing the movies, that’s giving another cut which has existed for over 40 years.
Whether it’s a great movie or not; I don’t think I’d say it’s great but I do believe it’s a great sequel. This may sound like a dumb thing to say, but I’ll explain what I mean.
I feel it’s exactly what would have happened to Sheriff Brody after the experience he had in Jaws. I love the scene where he yells for everyone to get out of the water, and various other “false alarm” moments because of the trauma he’s experiencing. My favorite part is when he tells the board meeting he knows what a shark looks like and he doesn’t intend “to go through that hell again!”
There’s not even a payoff for the Mr. Potter character. When I saw it, I was like “WTF movie, aren’t you even gonna give me the pleasure to see the “evil” Mr. Potter get punishment?”
I know this is a really old comment, but I just had to reply. You’ve got to watch the SNL “lost ending” of Wonderful Life from the 80s where everybody goes to give Potter what’s coming to him. It’s hilarious.
I love the movie, I watch it every year, so I was sad to read your hate for it. But even though I love it, I felt this way about Potter too, especially when I was younger.
It’s really spooky to read Lucas’ threat on the 1995 VHS set that it would be the last release of the original versions; and that chilling Jim Cummings-narrated “One.Last.Time.” commercial.
Nobody with a brain would have thought he actually intended on that.
Jaws 2 is a great sequel.
No plans to actually watch the movie today, but I’m rocking my classic Jedi poster shirt, and maybe I’ll put the soundtrack on later.
(Happy birthday Frank Oz too!)
I watch classic shows weekly for the regular TV season. I watch some different shows during the “off-season” if you will (shows I might not want to spend a whole season watching, or just things I can’t fit in the schedule).
So like, 25 I guess?
(I’ll watch some shows during the day throughout the whole year though.)
Yeah, that’s one of the things that really sickens me to think about that they used the classics as just a test that they could do certain things with implementing computer effects onto film. Then left them that way for (now) over 25 years.
If those directors had actually watched Jurassic Park they’d have heard Ian Malcolm say,
“Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.”
I guess they didn’t pay attention to that part.
My favorite pro-Prequel argument is “But the Prequels have even more practical effect shots than the OT!” I mean, who cares about the concept of percentages?
This is the absolute DUMBEST argument I’ve ever seen about the Prequel Trilogy. Because nobody stops to think that’s just because there are more effects in those movies in general. Like saying Revenge of the Sith has more model sets than Citizen Kane; like c’mon.
(I haven’t seen Most Wanted)
Big Muppet fan, hoping to reignite this thread.
-The Muppet Movie
-The Muppet Christmas Carol
-The Muppets Take Manhattan
-The Great Muppet Caper
-The Muppets (2011)
-Muppet Treasure Island
-Muppets from Space
Follow That Bird, the Sesame Street movie from the 80s would rank pretty high it we included that.
I’d have to go with release order now that I’ve finally gotten around to seeing Crystal Skull. I was thinking it couldn’t possibly be as bad as I’ve heard…
I love Temple of Doom; I really don’t understand how anyone could not. It’s one of the most fun movies I’ve ever seen. Actually(and I’m not thinking too hard into this) it may be the most just unadulterated FUN movie I can think of. (Meaning the story isn’t why you love it, though the story’s fine, it’s that the movie’s just so damn fun to watch; not a turn-your-brain off movie, but you don’t have to think too hard to just sit back and enjoy)
(So I don’t have to list them but I will)
4.Crystal Skull
The sides of 1995 VHS packaging for the movie we now know as ANH has a logo that says “Star Wars” and says “A New Hope” in small letters while ESB and ROTJ say “Star Wars” in small letters and have logos that say “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi”. Otherwise, ANH was marketed as just “Star Wars” until the 2000 VHS release.
Yes, I know, I’ve got those tapes actually. What I meant about the 2000 tapes was it was the first release to present “A New Hope” as being just as much the title of that movie as “The Empire Strikes Back” or “Return of the Jedi” on the case.
Interestingly enough, even though the logos all look the same, even in the 2004 DVD commercial, the announcer names the movies as “Star Wars: A New Hope”, “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi”
Now I wasn’t alive at this time, but from talking to people who were, it’s my understanding that even though the “A New Hope” title was on the movie since 1981, no one actually called it that until the late 90s at THE VERY EARLIEST. Seems like it was more when maybe the 2000 VHS came out.
Ah, Star Wars day. The day the non-Star Wars people join in on the discussion. And that makes me think of arguments that can arise with so-called “Star Wars fans” (TFN type people)
What’s the craziest argument you’ve gotten into with someone about prequels, special editions or something of that sort(with someone who has a different perception of what SW is).
I’d like to make this just real-life face-to-face arguments, so no internet/forum arguments please.
Did George plan on brining Palpatine back in any of his many Sequel Trilogy ideas?
I believe the original plan was to not see the Emperor in full until Episode IX anyway, but when it was decided to just make a trilogy, he was moved to Jedi. Not sure if there were any plans to bring him back post-Jedi.
A Criterion release would be a good idea for a few reasons; one of them being that then the movies don’t have to be marketed as episodes 4, 5 and 6… they can have retro-looking covers with the classic logos on them. I know Disney has kind of done away with the episode obsession but I still doubt they’d put the classic logos on the cases.
This is really interesting stuff. It’s weird to think that Darth Vader wasn’t supposed to be the father yet, when there’s so many cool clues in the first movie that work well with it.
Strange how Leigh Brackett gets partial scriptwriting credit if her draft seems this much unlike the final film. I know they wanted to do it to honor her after her passing, but it seems like Kasdan really polished it up so much that, like you said, it seems unrecognizable.
Now, some of the wampa stuff was filmed; did that survive Kasdan’s rewrite?
I’ve always loved this part too, so I’m glad to see a whole post devoted to it! All a part of that “lived-in” feel that the galaxy has in the classics. And nothing like this in the newer movies at all (or any newer movies, Star Wars or not).
Almost anything from the 80s
I agree with this!
I really will listen to just about ANYTHING from the 60s, 70s and 80s, with maybe the exception of some really hard rock. Here’s a few of my most favorite songs(at the moment)
It’s Still Rock and Roll To Me- Billy Joel
Invisible Touch- Genesis
Dreams- Fleetwood Mac
Stand Back- Stevie Nicks
You Might Think- The Cars
Jesse’s Girl- Rick Springfield
Is She Really Going Out With Him?- Joe Jackson
Self Control- Laura Branigan
Into the Groove- Madonna
99 Red Balloons- Nena
Call Me- Blondie
The Reflex- Duran Duran
Don’t Stop Me Now- Queen
Born to Run- Bruce Springsteen
Part Time Lover- Stevie Wonder
Back on the Chain Gang- Pretenders
Who Can It Be Now?- Men at Work
Straight Up- Paula Abdul
Bette Davis Eyes- Kim Carnes
Changes- David Bowie
Eternal Flame- Bangles
Take It Easy- Eagles
Both Sides Now- Judy Collins
You’re So Vain- Carly Simon
Mr. Roboto- Styx
And I better stop now. There’s more, but I wanted to limit it to 25.(I tried to pick one per artist of a bunch of artists I thought of that I love, so it´s possible the song from one artist might not be my absolute favorite by them, because it’s hard) (Also note there’s no Beatles; it was so hard narrowing down, I AM a huge Beatle fan)
