Bill Hunt's (Digital Bits) Review of GOUT
Time
I agree 100% with his review, especially the part about who should and should not pick these up. I thought that was spot on. BUT, my problem with him, is that in 2004 he went ga-ga over the "Original Trilogy" release and thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. He had no balls. Instead he gushed about how great they were and how lucky we were to have them at all. Now, 2 years down the road, he jumps on his pedestal and starts ranting. Thanks Bill! Nice timing!

POLL: So Who Bought Them & Who Didn't? (the 2006 GOUT DVD release)
Time
I only bought "Star Wars". I was planning on buying all three, but I wanted to check out the quality first. I'm glad I did, because I was less than impressed with the picture quality. I'm glad that other people are enjoying them, but honestly, I can't see much difference between these and LD/rips. If there is a difference, it's negligible at best, and not worth the 30-some-odd dollars it'd take to get the other two. That being said, I'll probably be picking up ESB and ROTJ.

The X-Files - Worth Watching?
Time
The X-files is probably my favorite show ever. Like Jay said, when it shines, it is entirely compelling (at least to me). However, the show really jumped the shark starting with season 7, and got steadily worse. Season 6 really was the height of mythology, and the episode(s) "Two Fathers/One Son" really is some of the best tv I've ever seen.

I don't own seasons 7-9 and pretend they don't exist

First Impressions of the OOT ...
Time
I watched Star Wars last night, and I have to say I wasn't overly impressed, and I bought it with low expectations. Sure it was grainy (and super-grainy) at times, but what really bothered me was the aliasing. Maybe it's my setup (50" WS DLP, Samsung "upconverting" DVD player via HDMI) but any time there was a line, even a curved one mind you, it became a jaggy. Seriously, it looked like Charles Schultz drew on top of the filmstock.

Lowest Priced OOT DVD Search.
Time
I think they RARELY promote their prices on new dvds before the day of their release. I've almost never seen them print a price ahead of time, and the "pre-order" price on the website rarely matches the in-store price that Tuesday. Why? Because they don't want people to know their price (or their competition to know their price). They plain and simply want to get people into the store. By using the "low price" nonsense, they can gain customer interest while also not committing to a price, which may or may not be better than their competition's.

Transformers Trailer
Time
Can somebody fill me in on some info from the show? I remember in the movie, that Prime 'dies'. But then I remember a few seasons down the road he reappears. He gets salvaged from a space ship (?) and there's a virus or something, but ultimately Prime becomes the leader again. So what was the general plotline around these events?

What did the Prequel Trilogy need?
Time
For me, the only thing the PT needed is for it's creator to actually care, and it's obvious he didn't. If it were me, my goal would be to make the best films possible. And that includes asking others for help and letting someone more talented than I make sure that they are done right. By George doing everything himself, it became clear that he didn't give a shit if they were good or not. And that's where the laundry list of problems arise. I have so many problems with the PT that's probably too long to list, but I'll do a few..

1) Obviously better writing, and directing. I would say acting, but the writing and directing (or lack there of) was so ridiculously terrible that I couldn't even begin to guage the acting.

2) Less CGI everything. Sets, characters, ships, ect. Episodes 2 & 3 looked like video games.

3) Episode 3 should have been Episode 2.

4) This is really one of my biggest complaints. Not enough humans. I'm not talking about too many CGI creatures, I'm saying to many creatures period. The OT had a more humanist feel to it, because we could relate to the people on the screen, whether it was an imperial officer reporting to Vader, and Hoth rebel getting mowed down by an AT-AT, or one of the heroes. It also gave charm to the scenes when there was an actual creature on screen. I'm for galactic diversity, but the PT was TOO diverse to the point that I couldn't relate to what was going on, much less that human actors can act better than cgi creatures. And let's forget about continuity, because it went out the window a long time ago.

OK, the DVDs are coming...so how bad are they going to look?

I have a dvd plaer that "upconverts" to a 50" DLP. While it may vary depending on the quality of the dvd player, from my own experience I think "upconversion" is a double-edged sword. It makes good transfers look better, but unfortunately makes bad ones look even worse.

Watched ROTS on HBO, UGGGH!

A lot of people still say Phantom Menace is the worst, and I see their perspective, but I disagree. The whole PT is bad, but the films suffer from the law of diminishing returns. At least with TPM, you had 16 years of anticipation without it coming in the wake of anything horrible (e.g., my guard was up for AOTC based on TPM, and when I saw ROTS I had no hope whatsoever) - you also had the most physical prequel in TPM, the most real sets and locations, and it was actually shot on film, which gives it a better look. Also, at least in TPM you actually had a Jedi-duo that was cool and worked well together - Neeson and McGregor (even though they didn't have enough to do and Neeson's character screwed continuity) - Yes, TPM had far too much childish crap, but I guess I forgive it more than the others because I wasn't yet wounded by previous prequels, everyone on opening night was positive and filled with hope before the film began unlike with the later movies and it was truly exciting to see some new Star Wars on the big screen...until it was over and my mouth was agape with shock and uncertainty.

Mike

I 100% agree with this whole statement. I'm glad to see others who think TPM is the best (or least worst) of the prequels. ROTS didn't work for me much at all, although I agree that the scene with Padme & Anakin in the apartment with no dialogue was absolutely excellent. In fact when I heard that Spielberg had helped film a scene, I automatically thought it was that one, just because it was a stark contrast to the rest of GL's clumsy directing. I just wish the other 6 hours and 58 minutes of the PT could be as good as that scene.

Anyway, while I don't care for ROTS, I consider AOTC far shittier for a multitude of reasons. Yeah yeah, the dialogue is terrible, the romance was forced, too many fake cgi creatures and enviroments, confusing plot, ect. But what really bothers me is that nothing important happens. It's 2 hours and 20 minutes of explaining why there's a clone army (which really needed no more that a minimal introduction), all while none of the characters develope whatsoever.

1) Obi-Wan doesn't change. In TPM, he goes from a sidekick who's green-behind-the-ears to a Sith-killer and mentor. In AOTC, he's still the same at the end as he was at the beginning and he treats the events that unfolded like they were a Wednesday afternoon at the quarry.

2) Yoda doesn't change. He goes from clueless to...still clueless. He knows something's up, just not what exactly it is. By the way we are at war now.

3) Mace doesn't change. Unfortunately, his dialogue in both TPM and AOTC is so stunted that we never really know who he is or what he's about.

4) Anakin doesn't change. I know...BUT HE KILLED TUSCAN RAIDERS!!!!1 However, if you to delete this scene and the reference afterwords, there is absolutely nothing in his dialogue or behavior to believe he changes at any time between the opening crawl and the credits. BTW this is sorta important since we now have ONE MOVIE for him to go from Jedi to Sith. Ugh.

5) Padme...hmm. I guess she and Anakin all in love and that is their character arc. However it is so forced that it becomes almost unlcear if they are actually developing as characters or not (just like Anakin's turn to the darkside).

Oh well, I'm done for now.

Sets
Time
I'm 100% in favor of real sets. And real FLOORS! Also, and I'm sure plenty of people will disagree, but I see physical sets being more necessary when filming digitally. The digital camera picks up so much detail and light, that a bluescreen backround doesn't blend well at all with the actors (most of the time). An example of this is virtually all of EP 2. It just looks fake and terrible, especially the scene in the ground floor of the Jedi Temple. That, to me, is the worst effects shot in the entire saga.
