The Merits of the Prequel Trilogy and the "Saga"
Time
Why waste life on Gomer. The guy's been sucking on Lucas' chins for a loooooong time and just wants to come here and stir shit up. Just forget the PT exists and you'll be fine. It is what it is, George Lucas' poorly written Fx tests. He even had Anakin fighting Greedo in Phantom menace in a deleted scene. that's the kind of thought process that went into the making of this trilogy. The man has changed and doesn't take this shit seriously anymore. so why should I take those films seriously. *shrugs*

*throws PT films in garbage*

The PT is garbage. And i don't say this because I just want to put it down and praise the OT. The OT has its garbage too but when we're talking about the PT with George Lucas writing and directing all 3 and carelessly screwing up continuity and focusing more on pretty fx than the story, it's a nooooooooooooooooo brainer. Does it have its moments? Hell yeah, I love duel of the fates, wish it was part of a better film... but well the bad outweighed the good in this case. What kind of a trilogy has to lessen one of the main character's role in the sequels because he's so annoyingly crappy. We used to have standards for star wars that put it above crap like that with characters stepping in shit and being farted on, but of course for whatever reason Lucas re-wrote those standards I guess or now with Kurtz gone he could put in all the farting and shit that he always wanted... who knows. whatever

I can't believe I wasted money on these phantom menace and attack of the clones dvds. I'll gladly give them away for free.

The OT is looked at through the Rosiest of Rose-Tinted glasses.

They’re great flicks and I love ‘em to death… but people forget shit like Carrie Fisher going in and out of British accents during the same scene. If that stuff happened in the PT you wouldn’t hear the end of it.

Nevertheless, Hamill and Fisher are akin to Brando and Streep apparently.

rose tinted, of course that's why there are people on this very forum doing whatever they can to create their own versions of the special editions that clean, and fix up all the star wars films and add new stuff while maintaining the orignal film's integrity... well the OT anyway. The PT needs the most work to remove the crap and make things better, but it's extremely difficult to do with what resources are available, basically george's bad writing, and yoda looking fucked up.

This is such a great site, and when you start getting TFn PT/SE gushers posting on a site that wants to get the O-OT in as best quality as possible, then that is where i stop.

And a warning for anyone, Gomer's two favorite lines:

"This is the best the O-OT has ever looked on home video."

"We should be thanking George Lucas for giving an inch and releasing the O-OT, he didn't have to do that."

Have fun!

Yes I can't believe he/she came here for whatever reason and signed up now, convieniently when the new dvds are out. Hide your kids folks, with go-mer whether it's jedi.net, tfn, or whatever, it's the same damn thing sucking on lucas all day. This guy's been doing this for years on other boards. Waiting for Episode VII during the lean years (1984-1998)

My first experience with Star Wars was seeing "The Empire Strikes Back" in the movie theater in 1980. I remember being very excited when I found out my parents were taking me to see the movie, my curiosity for the Star Wars universe being piqued from playing with another kid's Star Wars action figures. I remember really liking the movie, the scenes that stuck with me was the battle with the AT-ATs, Luke encountering Vader in the Dagobah Cave, Han getting frozen and of course, "Luke, I am your father". I really liked the movie then, but I was very bummed out at the end because the "good guys" lost. Of course I was pleased when all of those loose ends were nicely tied by the time "Return of the Jedi" came out. Being a little older by then, I noticed the "Episode VI" in the opening crawl thinking "Wow! Were there 3 other Star Wars movies that came out before the original Star Wars? The next year (1984), I watched the original Star Wars for the first time when it was aired on network TV. I made sure to pay very close attention to the opening crawl for the words "Episode IV". I asked around and no one knew what the hell I was talking about when I said that Star Wars is actually part four in the series. Everyone basically called me an idiot, lol. It wasn't until about 3 years later when someone made me VHS copies of the original trilogy on one 6-hour tape that i was finally vindicated and had physical proof about the whole IV, V, VI thing.

So, I just made the assumption that Episode IV (it's secondary title being "A New Hope"), was actually the first movie that was made and that the series of Star Wars movies would be made in a non-linear fashion. Noticing that the release dates of the 3 movies (1977, 1980, 1983), I was slightly disappointed when Episode VII didn't come in 1986, 1989, 1992, etc.

Those "lean years" built up a lot of anticipation in me for the next Star Wars movie. I scoured newspapers, magazines, bought countless comic books to satisfy my appetite for any information on upcoming Star Wars movies. I sat bored watching those horrible Ewoks live-action made for TV movies. I recall a Mad Magazine feature called "The Star Wars Log" giving some humorous speculation about future episodes in the 12-part "Star Wars Saga -- Part I" (to be completed in 2014, lol):

STAR WARS LOG from Mad Magazine circa 1981 (reprinted in 1988)

With each passing year, and with no new Star Wars in sight, I yearned more and more. I even remember dreaming about watching Episode VII in the movie theater then waking up in a cold sweat, disappointed that it wasn't real. If you must know, in my dream version of ep. 7, the Rebel Alliance destroys the last holdout in the Empire--20th century planet Earth (yeah, I know it contradicts "A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away..." but most dreams basically have the logic of a David Lynch film). I was actually one of the pilots in a Rebel squadron and I heartily destroyed my home planet. At the end of this ep. 7, Han and Luke infiltrate a prison colony to obtain information on a new threat and they get captured and it ends in a cliffhanger. The freaky part is that a couple of years later, I dreamed up Episode VIII (and I remember the subtitle: "Where Free Men Have Lived and Died!") where Han and Luke break out of said prison colony.

So you see, I really liked Star Wars (to the point where I was having a series of recurring dreams about future episodes!!)

Imagine how it was like for me when I found out through my college's computer terminal (connected to the then-young Internet) in 1994 when I found out that Episodes I, II and III were in the works. I even went to see "Star Wars: The Special Edition" on opening night (I hated the changes, so I refused to see the other two SEs, but I incorrectly assumed that these were just "special" and that the OOT would still be considered "official" ). When I downloaded the first bootleg trailer for "The Phantom Menace", I was elated. Finally, after 16 long, excruciating years, we were getting a new, official, Star Wars adventure.

When May 1999 rolled around, I read the first reviews that were coming out. Most of them were mixed, but I just assumed that it might be rust on George Lucas' part and that the new movie was still Star Wars. If it was halfway as good as the original trilogy, I would be satisfied.

I've only watched "The Phantom Menace" once in the theater. I. Could. Not. Believe. That. I. Waited. Sixteen. F*cken. Years. For. This. Piece. Of. SH*T.

There was no stage of fanboy denialism on my part. I knew what I saw was a big turkey rolling right before my eyes. What we were witnessing was George Lucas suffering from severe artistic and creative senility.

Anyway, just like Comic Book Guy, I vented my hatred for TPM on the internet and I was subsequently flamed to death by fanboy apologists. I remember their talking points very well:

"There was no way that the new Star Wars movie could live up to everyone's expectations"
"Give it a chance. The first movie was not supposed to be as good, it introduced the context of the story, etc."
"The lightsaber duel is the best of the entire series!!!"
"The pod race was absolutely awesome"
"There were many subtle nuances that were more sophisticated than the original trilogy."
"The movie is actually good if you can ignore what Jar Jar is doing."
"The Phantom Menace is the highest grossing movie in the franchise. Can millions of fans be wrong?"

Ugh. I got the impression that the fanboy apologists were actually paid hacks planted by Lucasfilm on the internet. Maybe they were paid, but I think in retrospect, it was just a simple case of denial on their part. I even resorted to not-so-subtle trolling to get my point across:

My response to fanboys complaining about the delayed Phantom Menace DVD release
Phantom Menace is better than Lord of the Rings movie
Did Han Solo really shoot Greedo first in ANH?
My "review" of the 2004 DVD set

"The easiest way to destroy a cause is by becoming it's most excessive advocate" -- Nietzsche (quoted from memory).

As for "Attack of the Clones", I hated it even more than TPM, but I actually liked "Revenge of the Sith".

So... how was it like for you guys when you waited for a new Star Wars movie during '84-'98?

I know your pain!!!! Your words are so true for me because that's exactly how it was when I got started with star wars discussion on the internet back in 1999, the year the phantom would soon be released. I did read a few reviews, but back then who cares what some snobby critics think, right? Well after seeing the movie, there was a big change in star wars (yes the PT), probably one we never really have seen the end of yet, and the atmosphere of uncertainty in the star wars message board universe permeated the entire fanbase. It's true people were saying "well it's the first, and the first is never the best. Lucas was rusty." I didn't know what to really think either about this new trilogy and this midichlorian stuff. Turns out as I predicted it was all half assed ideas lucas just put in for no reason, but as fans of course we came up with a million ways of defending Lucas' genius at the time. "Yoda looks that way because he's in a morphing stage" or whatever crap someone was saying back then...

Well during the wait, I was just going to school, and when I got home I watched some star wars for the fun of it, and discussed stuff online at a great messageboard I no longer visit because you know sometimes a message board has this one pompous bully who spends all his time just insulting everyone who's not seeing things their way... I can't stand that shit. But yeah I learned a lot about star wars during the wait for TPM.

When the pt movies came out and I opened topics about jar jar sucking or midichlorians being pointless, it was FLAME CITY. I just got sick of discussing the PT with jackasses back then. And it's probably true. Someone wrote a huge dissertation on the greatness of Jar Jar when I wrote a topic about jar jar not being needed in episode 2. That guy had to be a studio plant.

What seems to have happened is, I'm usually idle in the chan though I do check it out now and then to see if I'm still connected or if anyone's discussing something. Speaking of displays...

One of the things that bugged me about the continuity between the PT and OT was that the PT's fighter ships, even Anakin's junk pile podracer of course have better displays with all sorts of lcd screens with information on them than any ship in the Ot including the millenium falcon. Of course it's just another sign of how GL didn't really care about continuity details like that. So I think it'd be cool to replace every single display screen in every ship with some updated version. Maybe instead of triangles flying around a grid, they can be actual ships flying around a 3d millenium falcon diagram?

stuff like that...

Mark Hamill's thoughts on the Original trilogy
Time
I hope this hasn't been posted before. Judging by the amount of views I figured it wasn't... It's an interview some news station does with Mark hamill regarding the original trilogy, George's tinkering, and possibility of a sequel trilogy or something like that. He's so cool in this; 100% agree about boba fett... though after the prequels, I'm not too bothered to see that annoying kid get eaten. There's no mention of the original trilogy being on dvd though, he just talks about the tinkering and basically says george has OCD. I'm surprised by how good he still looks. He could play an older, wiser maybe bearded Luke tomorrow if he wanted to... too bad he... well he says what he says. But who knows... maybe he'll need the money.

hmm... I'm really stumped. other than a possible scene from terminator 2 or 3 where we see an explosion in the desert, I can't think of any other film in which I've seen something like that. Well besides RotJ ...and of course that's out.

The best I can figure for finding an explosion in a desert is to maybe give those mad max and Mummy movies a rent... sahara, scorpion king... a few of the ones I can think of that might have that in them.

9/11 - The Movie

The CEO of a major corporation would have been tossed out on his ass for ignoring warning signs about a malicious attack. Voters were stuck with him another 3.5 years and then were dumb enough to put him back in.

If there were a credible conspiracy story to tell, Oliver Stone would be telling THAT story.

But back to the topic at hand, this isn't the first 9/11 movie. Technically it isn't even the second. The best 9/11 movie is 9/11. The documentary shot by two German filmmakers who were doing a bit on one of the firefighters of NYC that day caught the real spirit of the day.

I haven't seen United 93, but it seems far more respectful of 9/11 than this cheesy cash-in. This looks like something that should go on the shelf beside Michael Bay's Pearl Harbor.

Applauds. -_- sorry for your loss and Well said.

I was in school in the bronx that day and well I just don't feel the need to watch a dramatized version of what I witnessed on the news during class and then later at home, the horror of it, live... maybe others want to see something like this. that's their right, but personally it's not something I think is necessary and does seem more like a cash-in attempt than anything else.

i don't need to see this

Expecting too much of George Lucas?
Time
Whoever this lucas is isn't the same guy who discussed Story > Sfx on the RotJ supplementals. I think at it's core one problem with the prequels was that we were given great epic, amazing trailers, completely misrepresenting the final film (except rots. by then we knew better.) God, just look at how beautifully done those were compared to the mediocre products that came after those trailers. If only the care put in to crafting those mini masterpieces was put into the editing and shaping the story in the films properly without a lot of unnecessary jarjar or whatever, i just know, they'd have been a decent set of films even if they weren't all perfect.

This thought just popped into my head and maybe it's off topic but I just have the urge to say it. What I think the PT's meant for the ot is an overall dissapointment factor for the whole saga. Years back during the days of episode 2 some over on a board I visited were discussing how star wars would be viewed when all the movies were finished, and the saga was completed. Well here we are... and I don't think it looks good. I've read some lump the Ot with the PT in quality, writing off the entire thing as kiddie crap and as a serious fan of the OT that's a kick in the nuts for me to see that because of he lack of quality lucas has decided, to intentionally or not, deliver has had a negative impact on star wars' entire public perception. That's just unforgivable in my eyes. He just doesn't care. I used to believe lucas was the most passionate about his universe, his characters, his story, but it's all seemingly a big business deal more than anything else. I'm seriously going to die of a broken heart after wasting all that time and money on his mediocre movies.

Expecting too much... I was 12 when episode 1 came out. I hated jar jar, but gave the rest a free pass. "he was just rusty," I told myself. it's reasonable. He hadn't directed in a loooooong time. "the next would be much better." Compared to the crap of the first, it was, but that's not putting it on any high ground. here it became more clear to me as I got older that to lucas nothing in star wars was sacred. It was all a joke now. From cameo roles for Samuel Jackson, to N'sync, jar jar, to making yoda and all the jedi completely retarded, he just didn't care about doing something timeless and great. I really can't believe some I've known in the past at other boards have dedicated years to defending those movies. I forget their name, but wow trust me there are people who do this and seem to have as much respect for the originals as lucas himself, while viewing jar jar as a great addition. for the sake of catharsis if nothing else, I'll say what a day it was on TFn when it was announced jar jar was practically not even in the last film of a saga he started in as one of the main characters. The thread started to point out how lucas finally recognized his mistake or whatever it was, was full of "Jar jar was meant to not be in the last film." and it just knocked me out to read how delusional some "fans" choose to be. I... I died of a broken heart that day.

Have to disagree with you here. i watched the TPM duel the other day for the first time in forever & i couldn't stand it. I've taken Olympic style fencing lessons for several years and recently started taking Kendo (japanese "samurai style" fencing) and Iaido (the art of drawing the sword and killing the antagonist, from an unassuming position - i.e. sitting on the floor eating a bowl of rice & someone attacks you). The TPM fight just made me cringe! Ewan McGreggor jumps off the ground EVERY time he blocks* a blow!!! You would NEVER do that! you'd get killed in a heartbeat! In fact, in kendo you never even allow your feet to cross (much less, leave the ground)! You keep you right foot forward & your left foot back in a very agressive stance. you move in an awkward(at first) way similar to how a child would run with a "stick pony" when playing cowboy. & you lift your feet just enough to be able to move them, effectively "gliding" across the ground. This is so that, when you run into your opponent, if you don't succeed at killing them, they can't knock you over when you run into each other. Having one foot forward & one back is a very stable/powerful position. if your feet are close together, or worse yet, in the air!!, you're a dead man. This doesn't even bring up the point of the ridiculous twirling baton lightsabers of the prequels! The OOT fights were at least reasonably believable as they were based on ACTUAL swordfighting techniques (& honetly, the ANH duel is probably most realistic). I'm a huge fan of swordfighting and can go a long way in forgiving the over-the-top fights from hollywood when they at least try to mimic something that you might actually do, but the prequels are just laughable. They remind me too much of the sword twirling you see at karate tournaments (not to knock karate, it has lots of cool aspects, but the majority of people you see using swords in a karate demo or tournament have no idea how to actually fight with one) Sorry for the rant, i've been chewing on that for a few days now...

*in my experience, you very rarely "block" in a swordfight. you either dodge altogether, which leaves your oppenent open for the brief moment they've extended to strike you, which gives you the chance to kill them. Or, you parry, which is not to block, but deflect the attck in such a way as to make an opening from which you can immediately attack. This attack is called the riposte (pronounced ruh-post or ree-post depending on who you talk to). Of course, this is mostly from my olympic style fencing experience, of which i practiced foil and epee, but really focused on sabre. I've only been taking kendo for the past 4 months or so & we're still working mainly on footwork and swinging the sword correctly. It's a very slow learning curve, like any sword art, and we probably won't begin thinking about the defense side of things for months to come.

Wow deja vu. about 5 years ago someone said pretty much the same thing to me about how unrealistic the fighting in the pt is compared to the Ot. I agreed to some extent as far as the bouncing weightless cgi doubles are concerned but the realistic enough fencing thing I think is pretty moot when we're talking about star wars with jedi flying all over the place. Vader throws his saber at luke in rotj; I doubt a swordsman who doesn't have force powers would do that in real life. It's of course supposed to be cool and spectacular rather than perfectly accurate. But The fighting in AotC is the worst of them all I have to say. You can just tell absolutely none of the jedi have had any real martial arts training with a weapon whatsover. And I don't know the first thing about fencing so I'm have no idea what to look for as far as wrong footing and such is concerned, It's just the beauty in the well coreographed and intense lightsaber duel I admire that really shows how the jedi fought in their prime. Reality's the last thing on my mind while watching star wars.

How the prequels should’ve played out:
Time
Interesting. The jedi farmer robes is definitely something I now notice Lucas overlooked. I'd change that for the real pt too.

My PT would go like so:

E1}} Prettymuch have it be about the life of a jedi, introduce us to the order, how people are chosen, how they train, etc. In the end I'd keep from TPM, The Duel of the Fates ( which to this day I think is the greatest lightsaber fight on film. No CGI bull shit doubles or artsy glow stick dancing. ESB's the most dramatic, but for pure spectacle this is the king.) None of this crap about balance or midichlorians. Anakin's a teen from coruscant or naboo, whatever, and a reject from the council like we saw in TPM who quigon sees great potential in and believes his destiny is to defeat the sith, so he urges obiwan to train him. the end. Either that or Obi-wan discovers this young scruffy lookin hotshot pilot who's rejected and who has great great potential and Obi-wan offers to train him against the counsil's wishes. The plot would concern a coming war between factions within the republic and the protection of a senator rather than queen who Anakin falls in love with. It'd be a great story.

E2}}Clone Wars Parts 1 and 2. This replaces Attack of the clones, since it is more fun like the originals, has better quality acting, more badass jedi, Anaking being the best star pilot ever, and has a story with grievous actually being a threat instead of a dumb joke of a character. I'd have preferred these be made in live action instead of whatever lucas came up with.

E3}}And Lastly Parts of RotS... the good parts. I thought Ian's performance was brilliant. So all that should be kept except the silly faces. Get rid of Hayden and put in someone who can act. Oh and I'd never have had Anakin be younger than padme. What the hell was the point of that? They'd be around the same age. I'd have anakin build his red saber instead of that not so subtle brother vs brother thing Lucas decided to do and have Obi-wan take anakin's saber for apparently no good reason except that he has it in ANH. Just have Padme return to her apartment to find a lightsaber with a note attached saying "give this to my son when he's old enough." or something like that. the eyes turning yellow is great though. I like that.

Here's the mess. How does padme die in a non-crappy PT? well it won't be because George Lucas lost the will to keep her alive or some other dumb excuse.

My idea is she'd have the twins, then instruct yoda and KING organa to protect them, while she confronts the chancellor to discuss returning to democracy, not knowing he's a sith lord now. And the Emperor kills her before Vader's eyes. Oh and the reason anakin becomes a sith isn't just to protect his wife from some bad dream. His own lust for power and glory will be his undoing as he starts to like the taste of the dark side that he felt in the clone wars cartoon and embraces it fully once his old friend Palpatine offers him a chance to become great, and it's this chance to protect his family, have unlimited power to stop the endless war that drives him finally across the rift between the dark and the light.

Thanks for editing the scenes together as one. It's nice to see again after playing the game. These are probably the best scenes from any videogame currently on earth.
