@Alexrd That was me. I only asked because I hadn't seen that shot in that high of quality before and was curious of your source.

Apparently I need to feast my eyes on the blu shot :P

@Valeyard this is a VERY quick and dirty comparison of the Sebulba scene (gimp lanczos3 upscale of GPVOD vs your lossless upscale of the extras dvd)

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/139232

I figure if a rough scaling can put them that close, your scaling script will probably work wonders.

 Is that Warrick Davis?

I had a look at your videos mverta on your restoration work. The film looks wonderful from your examples. I feel that Lucasfilm/20th Century/Disney will never release the original film, and if they do I'm sure it won't have all the skill and care your making of it. Have you thought that maybe the National Film Registry Library might like to have a copy of your finished restoration? I know that George Lucas offered them a copy of the A New Hope Special Edition which they refused.

They'll only take it in its original format, so 35mm prints only.

I don't understand why anyone other than an overly-obsessive collector would buy the steelbooks. I would imagine most people who want to own the films on blu ray have already purchased the current incarnations by now. The new artwork isn't even very appealing (at least not in my opinion), and if you only want the original trilogy regardless of whether it's the special edition then you already have had the ability to buy the OT on blu ray separate from the PT. 64% of the very few reviews of the OT steelbooks are 1 star on Amazon which is good. Hopefully they'll get the message with this release.

Well, I mean they're not out yet, so you can't really review them yet.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

Step 1: Acquire Ded 2.5 DVD5 versions from website of choice (if you don't know how to torrent, download something like qbittorrent, then download the torrent file). We're not going to tell you the exact site to get it from because that is considered piracy. They are, however, extremely easy to find if you Google them.

Step 2: Use imgburn to burn the files (or ISO) to these discs: http://www.amazon.com/Verbatim-Branded-Recordable-25-Disc-95033/dp/B0003QIXBY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1439409517&sr=8-1&keywords=Verbatim+4.7+GB+up+to+16x+Branded+Recordable+Disc+DVD%2BR+25-Disc+Spindle+95033

Step 3: Insert DVD into player and enjoy!

Hello and welcome! You're in the right place. Nice username.

I've heard of some people pirating these, but I really don't want to steal something that has had so much time and love put into it. So...what do I do?

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying. You mean you want to watch the Despecialized but you don't wanna "pirate" it?

I'm pretty sure he means just getting these in the most legal way possible. Harmy's recommendation is to purchase the Blu Rays (and maybe the official DVDs, but I'm not sure). That way you own the bulk of the sources that he used that are available. After that, you can torrent these. If you Google well enough, you can find the torrents very easily.

Harmy's is actually a 35mm Death Star with GOUT x-wings, I believe. Which would explain the difference in quality compared to Mike's work.

GOUT X-Wings, yes, but as even the sources documentary indicates, he uses Puggo's 16mm as a source for lowering the noticeable aliasing effects on the wings.  A good 35mm scan would probably lend this scene a world of good, as Mike's work no doubt indicates.

Even if Harmy doesn't, it's remarkable how much detail is in those shots in Ded. Besides, if he did get more 35mm sources there are shots that need it far more than any of the Battle of Yavin scenes.

We have lost. We are on the fringes now. We lost not because we were unwilling, but because Lucasfilm/Disney had better weapons.

Nothing matters anymore.

Please Stop. This doesn't alter the fact that the originals are still unavailable.

I think his point is that you're being unnecessarily dreary and pessimistic about the future of Star Wars. Even if an official version of the OOT is never released, the fan preservations will cover us in that area. We've never seen a history of C&D letters in this community and I see no reason why they would start now. Disney has been in charge for 3 years and nothing has really changed, and isn't likely to. Will we get an official OOT release? Maybe. Maybe not. There is no evidence one way or the other. At the very least, if they are released, you won't be let down since your expectations are low as they are.

It's gonna happen - there are just some things moving in the background that I can't really talk about (or affect for that matter) that I'm waiting for so as not to do redundant work.

Awesome! So Harmy's working on the official OOT !!

Sadly, no.

Harmy is working on the official 4K Special Edition OT!!

He's working on a new 8k master of Attack of the Clones using modern up-scaling processes!

It's possible, however unlikely, that they could be planning something to coincide with Ep7's eventual release on blu-ray in the Spring. I'm not holding my breath, though.

I think what's more likely is that the TFA box art will mimic these. Why elese would they release single discs? No one really wants to own just one Star Wars film.

imperialscum said:

This time they will put LD scans on a Blu-Ray instead of DVD!

At this point, I would buy that just to show demand for the OOT. And hey, it might look DVD quality at that resolution!

Honestly though, I don't give a shit about what they happen to release at this point. I am content with the state of current fan preservations, namely Team -1's work.

It's worth noting that the covers for ANH and Empire echo those of the 1995 Faces/THX/OneLastTime release.

They used the Emperor instead of Yoda for RotJ. They probably thought Yoda was a better fit for AotC because his lightsaber fight with Dooku is generally considered to be the standout scene of that movie.

I don't think that was intentional. Just sort of happened.

I do like the new Complete Saga artwork much better than the stupid Luke/Anakin one. When most people think of Star Wars they think of Vader, and that evokes this better. It's only really worth it for people who don't own the Complete Saga already, though.

I think Jedi is pretty important to preserve considering how butchered the film was with all the special editions. It was my favourite of the three as a child but now I think I like them all just the same.

I share this opinion, I do not like Jedi any less than New Hope or Empire. In some ways it is my favorite, in others it is not. I always feel like watching all 3 together and feel weird if I only watch one at a time.

I think it would be weirder for me to watch all 3 together. Sounds like a mess ;)

But only half as much of a mess as this.

 Holy shit.

Modern SE Revisionism

The original ILM coffee table book covered the early days up to about 1987.

There was a second book in the late 90s covering the digital era. Perhaps that's what you saw?

This is a modern book, I believe for their 35th anniversary. It went up to at least Iron Man and maybe even The Avengers. The SE trilogy was one of the first full-length sections in the book.

Modern SE Revisionism
Time

I was recently at a museum gift shop and found a book chronicling ILM's work. It basically glossed over everything pre-Jurassic Park in a few pages. There was one still from Star Wars- the Falcon sitting in the Death Star hangar- which may have been the SE. Then there was no more Star Wars mentions until the SE trilogy in 97, which included the '04 Jabba and detention cell set extension.
