What do you HATE about the EU?

I hate Revan more than I hate The Phantom Menace and Attack of the clones. This third generation of SW fans that put him on par to Luke/Vader/Palpatine is quite possibly the most irritating thing to me of all.

Actually, I like Revan. His character arc about going from a hero to villain then back is interesting. However, I agree too many KotOR fans put his extremely powerful (sometimes god-like) to the point that he overpowers the movie Jedi/Sith. I think that's bull.

Rewriting Prequels for TCW
Time

For this, I have a timeline that hopefully works with TCW:

44 BBY – Anakin’s born to Shmi, whose husband died a short while ago.

32 BBY  Qui-Gon frees Anakin and his mom from slavery. Anakin's 12.

31 BBY  Dooku encounters Sidious.

30 BBY  Invasion of Naboo.

29 BBY  Sifo-Dyas is killed after he and Dooku form the Clone Army. Anakin's taken into the Jedi Order by 15 and trained by Obi-Wan. Clone Wars officially start as the Trade Federation gains more allies.

28 BBY  Palpatine is made Chancellor. Cease fire is made.

26 BBY  Dooku forms the Separatists and brings in the Trade Federation.

23 BBY  Episode 1.

23-20 BBY  TCW

20 BBY  Episode 2.

19 BBY  Episode 3.

With that timeline set up, here's a rough synopsis for each installment:

EPISODE 1

As the fragile peace between the Republic and the Separatists crumbles, Dooku tries to assassinate Padme. Anakin takes her to Tatooine for safety (with his mother) while Obi-Wan goes to investigate the Clone Army that the Kaminoans have grown for the Republic. Their adventures would lead to Geonosis, where the war begins anew.

EPISODE 2

Dooku manipulates clones into attacking the Jedi and the Republic. Anakin and Obi-Wan manage to defeat the rogue clones (with help from a Viceroy Bail Organa of Alderaan), but Anakin's secret marriage with Padme is revealed. Padme, not wanting Anakin to sacrifice his future as a Jedi, divorces him. Unbeknownst to anyone, Padme's a few weeks pregnant.

EPISODE 3

Almost a year passed since Padme divorced Anakin. Anakin's relation with the Jedi is strained, and Palpatine uses that to turn Anakin to the Dark Side and hunt down the Jedi. Obi-Wan finds a pregnant Padme, and helps her escape Palpatine's wrath. After Obi-Wan faces Anakin (now Darth Vader) on Mustafar, Padme gives birth to Luke and Leia, who are split up. Obi-Wan takes Luke to Tatooine and Leia to Alderaan.

More details will be added, but for now, what do you think? Is it alright? Does anything need to be added, or removed? Please, let me know. Thanks.

PT Re-Write: Jedi outfits
Time

For your PT rewrite, what will your Jedi look like? Well, there are many ways of doing it, besides going with the actual PT look.

  • "Go with the Jedi outfits from the Clone Wars cartoons (both 2003 and 2008) as they show Jedi not always wearing brown robes. For the 2008 specifically, the Jedi outfits are more practical and make them look more like samurai (at least, to me.)
  • "Have the Jedi look more like armored medieval knights (similar to King Arthur and his knights from Excalibur)
  • "Use something similar to Tales of the Jedi comics. They have interesting designs, ranging from cloaks to tabards and so on.

Personally, I’d go with a mixture of these, and even add on some PT robes. What are your thoughts? What would you do? Just curious and thanks.

What did you think the Clone Wars were before you saw Episode II?

Here's my timeline (keep in mind that the ANH screenplay describes Luke as 18 years old):

- 35 BBY or earlier: Clone Wars begin

- 35 BBY: Battle of Honoghr

- 30 BBY: Nejaa Halcyon dies

- 20-25 BBY: Bpfasshi incident

- 18 BBY: birth of the Empire, extermination of the Jedi, and birth of Leia and Luke

Now that I think about it, you can have the Clone Wars end as early as 25 or 26 BBY. That way, the long period between its start and end can fit all of the events, including the Bpfasshi incident. With Nejaa Halcyon, he still dies then with his kid about 10 or 11 years old. By the time the Empire's rises (19 BBY), Halcyon's kid is 17. You can say Halcyon's kid married young (say 18 or 19) and had Corran Horn almost a year later (probably close to 17 or 16 BBY).

Well, there are some things from the Bantam Spectra books that give hints at when it was:

  • In the Thrawn Trilogy, it mentions some Bpfasshi Jedi went rogue during the Clone Wars and were hunted by Yoda about 30-35 years before the book (20-25 BBY). Also, it says the Battle of Honoghr from the Clone Wars dates back to 35 BBY.
  • In Darksaber of the Callista trilogy, it states that the former Jedi Callista knew Obi-Wan as she refers to him as General Kenobi.
  • In I, Jedi, we're told by Hal Horn's recording that his father, the Jedi Nejaa Halcyon, fought in the Clone Wars and died shortly after, when Hal was ten. This could put the Clone Wars sometime close to 30 BBY as Hal's son, the famous X-Wing pilot and later Jedi Knight Corran Horn, was born around the same time as Luke.

Rewriting Prequels for TCW
Time

I've been rewatching Star Wars: The Clone Wars recently and I noticed that it works better as a stand-alone instead of bridging the gap between episode 2 and 3. Here's why.

There are some in-show references that don't necessarily match the PT movies. First, it references in the later seasons that the Battle of Naboo (from TPM) was where the first battle of the Clone Wars took place. Second, when Anakin faces Dooku in Revenge of the Sith, he says his "powers have doubled" since the last time they met (meaning from the climax of Episode 2). But Anakin and Dooku are shown to duel many times in the show.

Also, TCW gives the feel of the OT in a PT setting (to me), much like how Filoni and the producers stated. Because of this, I've wondered if the Prequels were rewritten for TCW.

What do you think? Could it be done? If so, how would it be done? Who would be the main lead (Anakin or Obi-Wan)? Thanks.

NOTES for "Episode 1: Rise of a Jedi" (My brother's idea)
Time

This is a prequel rewrite my older brother came up over a year ago. He gave a basic idea for episode 1 but we never got a chance to work on it. I'd like to see what you think. Here's some notes I wrote for my brother:

PLOT:

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...

For over a thousand generations, the Galactic Republic was the center body of government in the galaxy that brought order and peace. However, the recent breakthrough of cloning has become the center of the Republic's issues as many politicians debate over the rights of clones.

Meanwhile, the Jedi Knights, the Republic's peace keepers, continue their servitude to the galaxy. On the planet of [insert planet name here], the Jedi train their young students in the ways of the Force to become servants of the Republic. Amongst these student is one who is exceptionally strong in the Force...

Beginning:

Anakin is a good Jedi, but lacks motivation. He becomes an assistant to Obi-Wan, who's Bail Organa's advisor. As they go to Alderaan, Obi-Wan sees Anakin's Force Potential, but doesn't think highly of him because of Anakin's lack of motivation, despite he's a good pilot,

Genetic engineering and cloning has spread throughout the galaxy, there are those who want clones to have rights while others don't, Bail (who is pro-clone rights) is on a Senate committee that deals with scientific-legal stuff.

Middle:

Obi-Wan see Anakin flying and using the use Force to fly, so Obi-Wan tries to motivate Anakin, but that doesn't work.

After that, Anakin is taken to a tour of a cloning facility as a publicity move by Bail to highlight the suffering of the clones, and sees how horrible clones are treated. Anakin sees Bail giving a press conference about clones being mistreated and is inspired to learn about politics, so Anakin talks with Obi-Wan about politics after listening to Bail's speech. Obi-Wan structures politics as a way of helping people via republicanism/democracy (government officials are meant to help people).

Incorporate business that have been funding the cloning have lost their jobs due to the lack of popularity from Bail's press conference, so they try to get an assassin (who happens to be Maul).

End:

Bail survives with assassination attempts. The first time, Maul attacks, but Anakin and Obi-Wan drive him away. As he leaves, Maul loses his communicator, which Bail uses that to realize that the corporate leaders were behind it, so he tries to get them arrested which leads to a blaster fight. Meanwhile, Anakin and Obi-Wan fight Maul, and they both take out Maul together.

Anakin realizes he wants to help people, realizes politics is a strong force in the galaxy, sees the pain of beings in the galaxy, sees politics as a way to help people, and Obi-Wan takes him as his apprentice. In the news, Chancellor Palpatine announces he has passed a pro-clone rights bill. However, this ensues the Clone Wars as the people anti-clone rights form their own army of clones.

ORGANIZATIONS:

Jedi:

Sees the interconnectedness of the Force and seeks to make the universe better by helping people. More of a religious order; no council; take teenagers in after they're done with their regular school to train them as Jedi, and the Jedi order has different positions for different kinds of Jedi (healer, diplomats, etc).

Sith:

Sees the Force and the galaxy like the Jedi, but believe the galaxy is in chaos and seeks to bring order by ruling the galaxy. They are only a secret small group (two people, since they follow the Rule of two) with their leader, who hides in the shadows. They work as infiltrators, trying to destroy the Republic from within, so they can rule.

Galactic Republic:

A galaxy-wide governmental body that is slowly becoming corrupted, and is led by Chancellor Palpatine.

CHARACTERS

Anakin:

Anakin isn't space Jesus; has step-family on Tattooine and an only child; in Jedi school as a young adult with no motivation, yet assigned by the Jedi School to do an internation in politics as special assistant to Obi-Wan who is advisor/negotiator to Bail Organa of Alderaan; becomes friends with Obi-Wan; likes to fly and is a good pilot,

Obi-Wan:

Sees Anakin is highly in the Force but ignores him because of his lack of motivation; explains to Anakin the Republic's democratic system; tries to get Anakin motivated; at the end he develops a respect and friendship for Anakin, and wants to train him.

Bail:

The Senator of Alderaan, who seeks to help promote the rights of clones; he tries to do this by revealing the treatment of clones done by the corporations; however, his life is in danger due to his interference, so he has Obi-Wan and Anakin to protect him.

Palpatine:

The head of the Republic; who is torn between those pro-clone rights and anti-clone rights. He simply waits for the Senate to decide on the matter and in the end, passes a bill that promotes pro-clone rights.

Maul:

A Sith Assassin who is behind the assassination attempts on Bail Organa's life. He's hired by the clone corporations to kill Bail, but it constantly thwarted by Anakin and Obi-Wan.

The Clone Wars:

Genetic engineering and cloning has spread throughout the galaxy; there are those who want clones to have rights while others don't; Bail is for clone rights, while there's an anti-cloning group

What do you guys think? Is it any good? Anything that needs work? Please let me know. Thanks.

What Went Wrong/What Can Be Avoided Thread
Time

Well, one thing does come to mind and surprisingly, no one seems to bring this up: the opening of Episode III (aka the battle over Coruscant).

Think about it. This gives the perfect set up for the fall of the Jedi and the rise of the Empire: The chancellor was captured, the Separatists invaded the the capital of the Galactic Republic and the Republic's fleet was probably put into disarray after that battle. Instead of looking at any repercussions of this, what we got was the rest of Episode III.

What I would do is keep the opening (barring some small exceptions like Dooku's death), but show the aftermath. Here, the public is paranoid about another attack and distrusts the Jedi for not foreseeing the invasion in the first place. The Republic wants to bring the full fury of the Republic's military on the Separatists, but the Jedi advise caution, creating a barrier of mistrust between the two. Anakin is caught in the middle as he sympathizes with the Republic and wants to end the war.

Palpatine would use the situation to strengthen his grip on the galaxy and have Anakin slowly turn to the Dark Side. The Jedi, seeing past Palpatine's plans, would try to stop him. They fail, of course, and the Jedi are hunted down. The movie would end with the duel between Obi-Wan and Anakin, now christened Darth Vader (not as fancy as the one we got, but still epic).

Shame on you, WS! Don't you think that kind of thing could push him over to the Dark Side? I'll find my own wife (once I'm old enough), and not take someone else's.

Anakin's wife
Time

How are you guys going to do Anakin's wife? I know a few have completely written out Padme, but I think she has potential to be a good character. In the actual PT, she desires peace for all and does what she can to help (somewhat).

In my rewrite PT, what I plan to do is for Padme trying to keep the peace between the Separatists and the Republic despite the growing tensions after the First Clone War. However, Padme distrusts the Jedi because she believes they caused Dooku to rebel and form the Separatists.

Because of this, her relationship with Anakin and Obi-Wan has a rocky start. Over time, she warms up to the two Jedi and soon marries Anakin. However, when she fears about Anakin falling to the Dark Side as her husband gets closer to Palpatine, she confides in Obi-Wan with her children. Ironically this leads Anakin to suspect of Obi-Wan and Padme betraying him, and Anakin ultimately falls to the Dark Side. After the rise of the Empire, Padme goes into hiding and she disguises herself as a servant of Bail Organa.

What are your thoughts? Is it alright? Is there anything wrong with it? What are your own ideas? Please let me know. Thanks.

Obi-Wan = OB-1?
Time

Hey guys, I've heard about this idea of Obi-Wan in the OT being a clone (OB-1) of the original Obi-Wan Kenobi (or just Ben, depending on the case). I've sometimes heard that the original Obi-Wan of the Prequels is killed by Anakin while the OT Obi-Wan (the clone) escaped with Luke.

Does anyone know where this comes from and does anyone think this can actually work when writing a prequel rewrite? Just curious.

A Modern Re-Intepretation of Star Wars
Time

Well, then just have Vader kill Anakin instead. If the Vader in the OT wasn't Anakin, imagine what would have happened in episode 6.

First, there's Obi-Wan and Luke's talk on Dagobah. Obi-Wan could go on to mention Vader's past and warn Luke of his anger towards Vader. Luke would have a conflict between his Jedi teachings and wanting to bring justice to Vader.

Then, there's the final duel. Luke would probably forgive Vader of his crimes and Vader could kill Palpatine. Either Vader dies, he survives and goes into exile, or he survives and helps Luke rebuild the Jedi. That or either Luke kills both Vader and Palpatine.

A Modern Re-Intepretation of Star Wars
Time

Well, almost everyone will say "get rid of Jar Jar." But besides that, here's one thing I would do different: clone Anakin Skywalker and name that clone Darth Vader.

What this would do is place Obi-Wan as the main character as he trains Darth Vader. Anakin would already by a Jedi at this point. There would be a slightly tension between Anakin and Vader as the two progress through the Clone Wars. At the end, Anakin kills his clone and becomes the Darth Vader we all know.

Speaking of which, the Clone Wars would start to change differently as Vader was the only cloned Jedi to survive the cloning process. The Separatists would attempt to make their own cloned Force-sensitives. This would shift the Clone Wars more to Zahn's version as described in the Thrawn Trilogy, the Separatists soon being called the Clone Masters.

That's all I have right. I'm actually working on a story for this idea, but I have no idea if it might turn out to actually be good. Do you think it might work?

The Dying Torch: A Retelling of the Prequel Trilogy.
Time

Hey guys. I'm currently working on prequel rewrite. I titled the trilogy "The Dying Torch" to describe the fall of the Republic. I hope it's alright but I also hope you can give any criticism for me to fix any problems with my story. With that said, let me begin with a basic idea for Episode 1: Spark of War.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...

It is a time of peace for the galaxy. The flames of the First Clone War have died and the Galactic Republic has finally recovered after years of peace with the Seperatists.

However, the peace is fragile. The Separatists, led by the former Jedi Dooku, continue to bring more worlds into its fold. In response, garrisons of soldiers are left on different worlds as the Republic continues its peace talks.

Meanwhile, the Republic's Jedi guardians begin to recruit more to recover their losses from the war...

Basic Idea: After Qui-Gon brings an eighteen-year-old Anakin to the Jedi, Anakin and Obi-Wan go to protect Senator Padme of Naboo during a peace summit with the Separatists on Alderaan. It turns out to be a trap as the chancellor’s assassinated by Maul (who’s allied himself with a Separatists ambassador) and the Separatists take over the planet.

Trapped, our group of heroes evades the Separatists to contact Coruscant. Viceroy Bail Organa and Qui-Gon lead a fleet of ships to free Alderaan, thus rescuing the trio. However, Qui-Gon’s killed by Maul during the battle and the Separatist ambassador is killed by Asajj Ventress, Dooku’s personal assassin.

As Padme comforts a mournful Anakin, Obi-Wan informs the Jedi Council of Darth Maul. The Council, startled by the Sith’s return, begin to start their investigation. Meanwhile, Vice-Chancellor Palpatine is made Chancellor and declares war on the Separatists for their actions. The Second Clone War has begun.

Details for Act 1 be will next...

Side characters
Time

How are you going to have side characters appear in your versions of the Prequels? Now, these are character who have a significant impact in all three installments, not just small cameos. For me, I'm going to do this:

Bail Organa

He's the Viceroy of Alderaan, who's trying to help rebuild the Republic after the First Clone War. To do that, he and Senator Padme of Naboo begin peace talks with the Separatists. During the Second Clone War, he joins the military and slowly builds the Rebellion as the Republic turns into the Empire.

C3-P0

He's a droid built by Anakin, like in the Prequels. However, Anakin hasn't completed him and 3P0's given to Padme, who uses him later on.

R2-D2

Just like his Prequel counterpart, he serves under Padme and works with C3-P0 to assist Padme. However, they will be more in the background than they were in the Prequels so the main characters aren't aware of them while allow the two droids to the observers as they were in the OT.

Owen and Beru Lars

Here, the two are a married couple who, with Anakin, leave Tatooine. They start off as traders, but with the Second Clone War, Owen and Beru return to start their farm on Tatooine (but not before failing to convince Anakin to join them).

Owen's related to Anakin, as in the Prequels, but it's also hinted that Owen and Obi-Wan are brothers. If I plan to go more into that, I'll say that Obi-Wan and Owen did come from Stewjon (as stated in Prequel EU) before Obi-Wan was sent to the Jedi and Owen went for Tatooine with his father.

2003 Clone Wars vs 2008 The Clone Wars
Time

Alright, so which Clone Wars cartoon do you like? There's the micro-series by Genndy Tartakovsky that ran from 2003 to 2005, and then there's the cartoon series by Dave Filoni and George Lucas that originally ran from 2008 to 2013.

Let's talk about the CW. Despite 3-minute run time for each episode, or "Chapter" as they were called, I think they portrayed a lot of character, atmosphere, and excitement while giving the Star Wars feel to the cartoon. Also, this story flows much better as it shows the progression of Anakin Skywalker down the Clone Wars. Plus, the animation and action was freaking amazing as were the villains.

TCW, on the other hand, does have some good things about it. It almost gives the feel of the Original Trilogy with the adventures taking place in the Clone Wars. Like the micro-series, Anakin and Obi-Wan's friendship is believable and even Ahsoka, Anakin's Padawan, has some good moments (especially whenever she's with her friend Lux). Also, it gives a chance to show other Jedi and while I was bewildered at Maul's sudden appearance, I enjoyed his character and motivation in the show.

However, there are also some things that don't live up to my expectations, aside from retcons prior to Disney's creation of "Star Wars: Legends." For instance, some of the villains are lackluster when compared to the micro-series. General Grievous is practically the Cobra Commander, because I always see him running away and/or getting his butt handed to him. Also, I felt the stories in TCW were all over the place and didn't tell that much of a consistent story (at least not until the later seasons). In the micro-series CW, I always thought the villains were a threat as they were ruthless and calculating. Not so much in TCW.

But that's just me. What do you guys think? Please let me know. Thanks!

Beyond that, I haven't read much Star Wars fanfiction. I read some Star Wars/Stargate SG-1 crossovers years ago by an author whose name I can't recall, and they were okay for what they were, but the two universes just don't mesh well together (in hindsight, that is).

Actually, I think you can mesh Star Wars and SG-1 together. You just have to make sure how you do it without having one franchise overshadow the other (which can be said for any crossover, really).

As for the author of those crossovers, I think you mean Dark Jedi Princess (who wrote the "Powerlust" series) or was it DarthMarrs (who wrote "Of Gods Light and Dark" and its sequel The Heavens Fall: A Jedi On Earth). Do either of them sound familiar?

Well, I got these fics to look at (barring some of my own horrible fics I wrote).

One's Star Wars: Awakening by Dave Gremillion. This is a rewrite of Episode 1, which surprisingly matches with the pre-99 EU and has one thing that most prequel rewrites don't usually have which I can't say because of spoilers.

Another's Project JS by P99. This is also a prequel rewrite, but there's an interesting twist to it: Obi-Wan's a clone of a Jedi Master. I think that's all I need to say. Not really a spoiler because they establish it in the first chapter.

Finally, there's Balance by Xander867, a fanfiction of The Clone Wars cartoon. Here, Ahsoka teams up with a Pureblooded Sith named Adas and they try to deal with the Clone Wars. This is an edited version Xander867's earlier fic Secrets Inside of Me, which is just as interesting, but I feel Balance is better written, the story flows better, and the characterization is more believable.
