Here’s one I’m thinking most may have already seen but it’s worth a repost 😛

This one probably not so widespread but a good continuation of many memes getting around at the time of TFA (skip to 0:40 if you’re not interested in the lead up):

One point of view people may be missing about the Rancor pit scene…Luke was visibile to Jabba and many of his associates and underlings most of the time in the pit, even when at the gated entrance. He probably didn’t want to use the force unless absolutely necessary otherwise it would give his “hand” away to Jabba who would then take precautions against these witnessed abilities and likely foil Luke’s plan.

Pretty much the only time he is properly out of sight is when he’s under the rock overhang (rear gated entrance still closed at this point) and you might say he used the force then to smash the Rancor’s hand with the rock as I don’t think a normal person doing the same would even cause the Rancor to flinch, let alone rear back and roar in utter pain.

He does use the force earlier to choke the initial two palace guards but no one else is nearby to witness this to understand how they died.

I’m not JMOW

Yeah I’m not Jedi master obi wan

How do you know who JMOW is?

Sock confirmed? It seems very unlikely a new member would instantly understand what JMOW is referencing. It could be explained away if they were a long time lurker but most people usually say this in their intro first post when they join, whereas JMSW just jumps into standard replies straight off the bat…

Well done indeed. Having seen it many times, I thought I’d caught most of the deeper symbolisms. However, one that seems to have gone right over my head is when Chirrut yells to Jyn “The strongest starts have hearts of Kyber”. It hadn’t occurred to me that he was speaking about her as well as to her. I like the idea that he’s attempting to enlighten her with the knowledge of her own inner strength.

I don’t doubt the symbolism and positive message / encouragement he was trying to impart to Jyn with saying that but he actually says “stars” not “starts”.

Ranking the Star Wars films

I really enjoyed R1 apart from a couple of minor issues after my first viewing at the cinemas and just watched it again for a second time the other night at home on the TV while trying to manually modulate the volume to a low but audible level so as not to wake my daughter up in the next room. Despite the less than ideal viewing and listening conditions I found myself enjoying R1 even more than I did the first time and look forward to viewing it again once I get a HD projector and proper Hi-Fi audio system.

I think the main characters could have been fleshed out a bit more but I still think it’s a great movie anyway, one that actually adds a lot more detail and depth to the OT SW universe (without being in your face) with a little more grounding and stylised realism. It’s great for a change that there are no Jedi around to conveniently save the day. I also didn’t mind that it broke away a bit from the usual SW format / formula with no crawl, using location cards, etc. It is afterall a “SW Story” rather than a SW movie so to speak, instead showing a story from a different perspective rather than the usual episodic saga movie.

There, fixed it for you 😛

I also agree that “saved in the editing” is not entirely accurate as every film goes through an editing process though in this case it feels that the films success relied entirely on it.

Star Wars: The Lucas Film Edit (aka 'How Star Wars was saved in the edit' video)
Time

Hey All,

Just finished watching this rather interesting and well done video on how Star Wars (aka ANH 😉 ) was basically only successful due to editing and the crack team of editors (Richard Chew, Marcia Lucas and Paul Hirsh) that essentially saved Star Wars from likely being a mediocre film to maybe even a complete flop instead.

https://youtu.be/GFMyMxMYDNk

It also shows again that even for the first film that started it all, George had a massive amount of talented help and support in bringing his vision to life which without it, SW wouldn’t have been the success it was. It sickens me even more now knowing this, the attitude that George takes as if he is solely responsible for it all and feels he can just go back years later and keep changing things time and again while actively denying and trying to erase the theatricals that got him to where he is.

Anyway, was mostly just wanting to share the video and see what people had to say about it, not necessarily hate on GL all over again 😉

Cheers for the mention Hal. Didn’t think I contributed apart from giving a bit of hopefully constructive feedback and my perspective on a few matters. The people to take all the credit are of course yourself and those brilliant editors and FX people at the top of your list of mentions that put some solid time and effort into this project.

So a big THANK YOU to you all again:

-Hal9000 (project lead and final editor) - did I get that right? 😛

-NeverarGreat (Visual and audio effects)

-Sir Ridley (Visual and audio effects)

-Jackpumpkinhead (Visual effects)

-Sherman (Cover artwork)

-MalàStrana (English and French subtitles)

I can’t wait to watch v2 (hopefully before TLJ but don’t stress man 😉 ). Just actually finished watching R1 for the second time (first time since the cinemas) and so very much in SW mood at the moment. I already liked the movie but really enjoyed it the second time round and think it’s a great addition to the SW universe despite a couple of minor issues (pretty much the oversimplified convenient lever pulling plot devices at the end).

I find R1 actually adds a lot of extra detail and depth to the established OT lore without being in your face while also being a little more grounded in realism rather that the force automatically solving everything. I’m not sure why it gets such a hard time around here, I find it to be a great movie and really buy into the characters and the struggle.

Anyway, getting a bit of topic there…thanks again Hal and everyone else for all your hard work and I look forward to checking out the finished edit.

I said a while ago that the Blu_ray/ DVD versions won’t be available until mid next year at the earliest

Don’t take this the wrong way Ady but I was just wondering if you’ve got all your ESB:R work on seperate hard drive/s from your ROTJ:R and ANH:R HD work? And backed up to boot?

It’s just that from memory, your editing work has chewed through a number of computers and hard drives (with the current donation drive to help fund the new editing PC) and for your sake and everyone one else anxiously waiting for the Bluray release of ESB:R (which includes myself), I’d hate for the crunching your current projects will do to kill their associated hard drives and lose all your ESB:R work (if it happened to coexist on said drives) before it can be released to the world in its higher quality formats that it deserves to be seen in 😃

I’d assume you have this sort of thing well in hand considering the personal time, effort and cost you’ve invested in these edits. It was just a small, niggling concern that entered my head upon being reminded that the ESB:R BD won’t release till mid next year.

I really like the idea of having Vader say, “Your mother once thought as you do.” This change makes sense, and not coming from a PT standpoint either. It’ll help his character be more dynamic; Vader would originally bring up Obi-Wan too often (“Obi-Wan has taught you well”, “Obi-Wan this”, “Obi-Wan that”), so for the audience to see that he actually remembers someone else in his past life makes him even more compelling. Hopefully it can be done 😃

I agree in a sense but I think it may have a diminishing quality on his character at the time as seeing him for the evil machine and right hand of the Emperor he is at the time. To hear him reference Luke’s mother and his ex lover (wife?) starts to humanise and make him relatable again (to an extent) to early on where originally this doesn’t happen until he decides to save Luke from the Emperor and the events that follow after.

Though in saying that, you do hear him call Luke “son” in the same scene as the “thought as you do” line so using “mother” could work but it also just seems an odd reference when discussing matters of the force, it does make more sense still to reference Obiwan who was his mentor in the ways of the force and would be able to detect the same feelings but obviously gave up on them long ago.

To reference Luke’s mother in regards to this actually creates questions about her that can’t be answered in the OT but can be in the PT which you then involuntary start to think about anyway as the only source of extra info on her apart from Leia’s comments about her beauty and being sad.

By the way, just had a quick look through the ROTJ script and I could only find 3 times where Vader references Obi-wan 😉 Maybe you’re memory is including times in the other movies where he mentioned Obi-wan.

http://www.imsdb.com/scripts/Star-Wars-Return-of-the-Jedi.html

“Obi-Wan once thought as you do.”

“Obi-Wan has taught you well.”

“Obi-Wan was wise to hide her from me. Now his failure is complete.”

It’s easy to explain how Leia remembers Padme, without any outside material. It’s because she has the Force. Plain and simple.

And yet leia said that she died when she was very young and NOT that she died when she was born ( which is how anyone would have talked if their parent had died in childbirth) . And that is because Leia’s mother WAS still alive during the first few years of her life when Jedi was written. Silly excuses cannot hide the fact that George forgot his own films and screwed up when doing the prequels.

Very young, newborn, whatever. Same thing in this case.

If Leia’s mother died giving birth, she wouldn’t tell Luke, a close friend in an intimate conversation, that she died when she was very young, she’d tell him she died giving birth and wouldn’t have memories of her at all.

Exactly.

And with that, I’m stopping here as I can see another thread derailing OT vs PT argument about to take off again…

There is a clear difference between “newborn” and “very young” no matter how much you try to ignore and brush it aside. The very evidence that Leia was not a newborn is in the damn movie…

Princess Leia Organa: Luke, what’s wrong?

Luke Skywalker: Leia, do you remember your mother? Your real mother?

Princess Leia Organa: Just a little bit. She died when I was very young.

Luke Skywalker: What do you remember?

Princess Leia Organa: Just images, really. Feelings.

Luke Skywalker: Tell me.

Princess Leia Organa: She was very beautiful. Kind, but sad. Why are you asking me all this?

Now, you tell me how she remembers all that if she was newborn, fresh from the womb and only had seconds with her mother before she died?

Clearly if you focus on the OT and ignore the stupid retconning happening in the PT, you would easily deduce from what Leia says that she was at least 2-3 years old when her mother died, 1-2 years at the youngest.

This was one of the most jarring transitions in the theatrical version as well, since Rey doesn’t answer in this scene. The new shot actually provides more of a buffer between scenes, which is why I put it there.

The other option of having it fall out of Hyperspace between Rey saying “Help me with this, quick!” and “What’s going on?” breaks the scene up even more.

I agree that there could be a louder breaking sound just as it exits hyperspace.

Ah k, didn’t realise that’s how it is in the movie as well (obviously two viewings is not enough to remember such details 😛 ). It is an odd cut, I wonder if it’s a theatrical edit and she did actually originally reply.

I just rewatched your version 3 and didn’t find it as jarring this time through. Though it really seems as if their lines simply should have originally been flipped, with Finn saying “what’s going on!?” as the steam starts venting and then Rey saying “help me with this!”

I’ve just updated the first post with some more planned changes

Nice list of changes! 😄

“Maybe remove most of the end celebration (all planet celebrations are going anyway). Have a small portion of the Ewok celebration which then leads to the funeral pyre scene. This is where the Force Ghsots will appear and the film will end with Luke being alone (which in turn foreshadows TFA).”

Do you plan to still show Luke reuniting with the rest of the group during the briefer Ewok celebration? If not, I think it would be quite sad not to see them all together again at the end, much like it was sad realising we’d never see them all together again in the ST with Han dieing in TFA.

It’s an interesting change to reorder those events and it will quite drastically change how you feel at the end of the OT. Originally you felt sad during the funeral pyre and then the end celebration lifts your spirits back up and finishes on a high note at the conclusion of the OT. With your version you will instead get the high note but during a much shorter celebration and then end on a sad scene, leading to a much darker conclusion in comparison. Personally it feels like the wrong way to go when looking at how it leaves you feeling at the end of the OT saga.

Seems just about perfect to me.

I think the “falcon breaking down” noise could be a little louder as they drop out of hyperspace, I barely heard it as the ship moves away from the camera. I definitely like the idea though.

I also found the sudden cut after Finn asks whats wrong with it to be a bit jarring, dont know whether its worth allowing Rey to answer first and then cut to the falcon dropping from Hyperspace with the break down noise playing as it actually drops out, being the cause of it dropping from hyperspace?

I strongly second the choice of Kerr’s “Dark Force Rising” fan edit for episode 3 along with the Anti-Cheese edits for episodes 1 & 2. They don’t drastically change the movies, only cutting out most of the “cheesy” crap and also redub the alien voices to something more believable in an alien language with subtitles. I feel at the least they are a good starting point to then look at more rigorous edits if not satisfied with these (Kerr’s edit though is full on and my definitive Ep3 edit).

If you wants copies of those (including anti cheese for Ep3 if you want) just shoot me a PM.

But this is a problem with the PT, not the OT.
The PT dropped the ball on what was already established.
And it still makes more sense for him to appear as a perfect form of the good man he died as rather than the horrible, rotten kid he used to be.

Spot on.

Regarding the argument that the “Shaw ghost never existed”, well…the Hayden ghost never existed in that specific form either. He clearly has both arms intact when one should be missing (and yes, both hands are visible in the wide shot). So if the Hayden ghost is okay from that standpoint, then so is the Shaw ghost. Therefore, the “Shaw ghost never existed” argument is no longer valid.

So since we’ve now established this, we can look towards other factors. The Hayden ghost symbolizes regression back to an unstable man who had already begun his descent to the dark side (had murdered an entire village, including women & children). The Shaw ghost, on the other hand, symbolizes growth and shows that Anakin has learned from his past mistakes to truly become a good person in the end. That, and he is the same person (albeit with healed injuries) that Luke just saw behind the mask. So the Shaw ghost makes far more sense, even with the prequels. The only thing the Hayden ghost has going is familiarity with those who like the prequels or saw them first. It was a way to connect the trilogies that doesn’t actually make much sense when you really think about it.

+1 We’ll said.

Well, for a better image:

I’m glad you posted that comparison image actually as it just demonstrated for me another reason to keep the eyebrows and that is that they actually help make his face far more expressive.

Looking at left image I can actually recall and see the emotion he is displaying as he is telling Luke that he was right (that there was still good in him). Looking at the right image I couldn’t tell you what is going on from just this image as it’s a lot harder to read up front. I can tell that both images aren’t an extract frame comparison but I think the heavily contrasted eyebrows really help to convey Vader’s emotions in this scene where you can only really see his upper face, his mouth being obscured by the breathing apparatus.
