When/Why did you become an OT purist?

Nice thread to jump into for my first post :-)

I saw SW77 three times in the theater as a 7 year old and remember long lines, audience reactions to various scenes - laughter, cheers. I ran out of the theater energized like I had downed 3 red bulls.  That world fueled my childhood as it did so many people's.

The special editions came along and I was excited. Something was happening with Star Wars after all those years of quiet. I saw ANH SE on opening day and remember people cheered after the inserted CGI Jabba scene, but it looked fake to me and I wasn't happy. The scene with the jawa swinging around and the cgi dewback scene also looked so fake it was terrible.

GL's hostility towards the movies of my youth and the final thing that pushed me to sign up for this site is the horrible blu-ray release with the colors all wrong and the sounds changed. That is not what we saw! I want to see and be able to show my children the original unaltered trilogy, properly restored/preserved.

Gooble gobble.

Welcome!

Man. I remember the "One Last Time" thing now.

Also, Wook, the Luke scream in ESB is the same as the Emperor scream from ROTJ. And the Vader shuttle scene is just the same scene as his arrival on the Second Death Star in ROTJ.

I also find it interesting how everyone was cool with the SEs until they started to replace the OT. I find that very telling. If only Lucas had done us right, this wouldn't ever have been an issue.

That's what I thought about the scream. I know Vader exiting his shuttle is an alternate take from ROTJ. (You can just glimpse Moff I can't spell whatever his name is waiting to greet him.) I thought the shot of the shuttle on Cloud City was new though?

Oh, sorry. I misunderstood; Yeah, it was.

Take the Father Skywalker Pledge (Troll Banned, Pledge Rescinded)
Time

Aw, and so ends the Saga.

It's okay. He's contributed far more to the forums than he could possibly have imagined. I'm sure we will now occasionally refer to Hayden Christensen as "sexy long haired Hayden Christensen with the handsome good looks and muscles before he got the black cyborg samurai/knight suit with the James Earl Jones voice."

RIP 2012

He was also behind The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles and I respect him for that.

If you were offered the chance to work on six Star Wars releases and a revolutionary television show would you turn it down even if you might find it difficult to control your boss' wacky ideas?

I have also heard, but haven't confirmed, that he was a proponent for the release of the OOT and would try to get Lucas to release it.

Hearing that changed my views on him (which were negative due to his work on the prequels and special editions), but, again, I don't have any sources but hearsay.

Who is Ignoring You, and Who are You Ignoring? (was: Who is Ignoring You? (was: Hello all, I'm back!))

It seems to have calmed down a bit now that fewer people are engaging him.

I honestly could discuss Star Wars all day long, but I've come to realize that no matter how many facts and quotes and sources I throw out there, they're all just going to be ignored or misunderstood or just pain not read.

I can deal with someone who knows nothing about Star Wars, that's fine, but I can't deal with someone who refuses to learn in the face of overwhelming evidence.

I don't know.  I just hate to see movies like "The Godfather" and "Star Wars" and "Alien" be thought of as "blurry" and "jittery".  Just like people don't appreciate paintings anymore, people won't appreciate these movies anymore.  Maybe it's inevitable but it doesn't mean i have to like it

Perhaps by the mainstream, but people will still appreciate them, just like there are people who appreciate a nice Monet or Da Vinci, and people who appreciate Egyptian art, or ancient cave paintings, just like people still appreciate black and white or silent films today.

It's not all that bad, man. Just keep liking what you like!

Something SilverWook said about Father Skywalker made me think for a moment that he might be Warb.  But then I did a bit of research and was relieved to find it wasn't so.

With his latest threat about the AT-AT, I am a hair's breadth away from rescinding and renouncing all my previous comments about FS not being a troll because come the fuck on.

Getting up too early sucks because then you're tired before midnight and it makes you feel old or responsible.

Ah, now you know what having kids is like without actually having them.

Ah, good. I can avoid having them now that I've had the experience.

If this is what it's like, then forget it.

If there's considered no difference between paintings and photos, why go to an art gallery at all?

It doesn't have to be like that; you go to see paintings at one art gallery for a different reason than you go to a collection of photographic art in a different gallery.

You can take a picture of something and paint a picture of the same thing and they can both be beautiful artistic expressions in their own different ways.

Just because painting no longer holds the monopoly on transmitting visual information to someone doesn't mean it's gone forever; the same goes for black and white photography, and real film, and 2D pixel art video games. It'll happen to digital photography and film and 3D animation one day as well, probably. We'll have holograms and stuff, things we can actually "touch" and manipulate and interact with all in realtime; who knows.

But people will still be making silent, black and white movies on real film, and getting out the oil paints and canvas to paint a pictue, because artistic expression isn't unbreakably bound to technological advancement, our favourite mediums never really go completely away, they just fall out of the mainstream - people have been painting since the dawn of humanity, and they'll continue to do so until the end.

I actually grew up with the Special Editions, and only the Special Editions.

I saw the original Star Was at least once growing up sometime in the mid/late 90's. The once thing I remember from it was that first entrance of Darth Vader.

Sometime after that, my brother and I got the standard screen SE Trilogy boxed set for Christmas or a birthday... anyway, that's what we grew up with. We watched them all the time. I remember telling my older cousin who I thought was really cool that I owned the Special Editions (at the time I had no real grasp that there were differences, even though there was the little documentary on the VHS before the movie that told about them) and he thought it was awesome and I felt super cool.

The first time I really grasped that there were changes was when I was at a friend's house and we were watching Return of the Jedi, and at the end, the wrong song came on! And where were Coruscant and Tatooine and Cloud City?! What was going on! I remember remarking about it, but still not fully understanding what was going on.

I didn't think about it at all for years after that. I just watched my SE. To me, it was all there was. I had no idea there were different versions of films or anything, especially not Star Wars. Eventually I became aware of grumblings about the changes and whatnot, but didn't really pay it any mind. Han Shot First and all that. I never paid attention.

Eventually Tobar got to talking to me about the whole situation, and I was resistant at first. I mean, I had Star Wars, what was wrong with it? I just didn't really understand, and I wouldn't for awhile still. Tobar introduced me to this site, and I started coming around now and then. Lurking. Disappearing for awhile. Coming back. Eventually he got me into the fan edit scene with Ady's ANH:R and it was awesome! So much stuff was fixed that I never noticed, and that got me thinking; I checked out his Theatrical ESB release when it dropped, thinking it would be more like a novelty or a teaser for ESB:R, and there was just something about it that I liked... curious...

Eventually I checked out Harmy's original DEED and then it all clicked. The movie was so much better like that, with all the Special Edition stuff stripped out. I dunno what it was, but it flowed better now, it was like a faucet you've always had that was slow and then one day you accidentally drop something on it and it jars something loose and it runs like Niagara; it was like a different movie, and one that was so much better. IT was focused on story, not on flashy CGI distractions, distractions I had never noticed were distracting me until they weren't there. My eyes were opened.

I was hooked then.

After that, I started to learn more about the history of the changes; the hypocrisy of Lucas and his stance on film alteration, the replacement of the OT with the SE, the travesty that the changes were, the willful destruction and suppression of not only cinematic history, but cultural history as well. That was when I became a purist, and I haven't looked back since!
