McCallum Wishes OOT Were on Blu-Ray

http://collider.com/rick-mccallum-red-tails-star-wars-tv-series-interview/138426/

Steve Weintraub: Episode I recently came out on Blu-ray, and you guys are getting ready to do a 3D re-release. Obviously I’m a fan of you guys, I’m a fan of Star Wars and I know that George likes to tinker and change. Is the 3D re-release any different than what just came out on Blu-ray or is it the same movie just in 3D?

McCallum: It’s the same movie in 3D.

SW: Do you think we’ll ever get the original trilogy and the prequels without any changes on Blu-ray, or is it never gonna happen?

McCallum: I would have to answer that officially it’s never gonna happen, but you never know with George. It’s one of the constant things that—let’s put it this way, it changes always. You never know.

SW: Yeah I mean personally, as I’ve said many times on the site I have no problems with George changing the films, I just think it would be great if he would release the originals and that way everyone could have it, but that’s just me.

McCallum: I know, but I understand that completely. It’s just a question I can’t answer. Obviously I have my own personal feelings, I hope that he does it, but I don’t have major arguments with him about it. I think that’s a decision he has to come to on his own as time comes by.

I wish that I could just wish my feelings away...but I can't.  Wishful wishing can only lead to wishes wished for in futile wishfulness, which is not what I wish to wish for.

Isn't this old news? I'm sure he's said something like this before.

Either way, it makes no difference; he's a spineless wuss who won't stand up for what's right.

My Heather Langenkamp avatar has decided to go on an extended vacation and may not be back for sometime. Not to worry, though, for she will be back - eventually.

No one except a small band of teenagers and clueless fanboys would say they wouldn't prefer the originals exist. McCallum probably always felt this way. But at the end of the day--what can he do, right? Threaten to quit if Lucas doesn't release a version of the films they are millionaires off? He gets a lot of crap but there is only so much he can do, and I'm pretty sure he's gone on record saying he has brought it up before.

Or perhaps he likes his job, and wants to keep it?

Perhaps I was too harsh. Still, the guy could probably stand to get out of the Smithers role and be more assertive in his dealings with Lucas.

The relationship between Rick and George reminds me of that between Jesse and Walt on the tv show Breaking Bad.

If you were to ask, "George, why? Why Rick?" George would respond, "Because he does what I say. Because I can trust him."

I have nothing against Rick. Seems like a good guy but at the end of the day he has to serve the dark lord. If nobody has changed George's mind thus far about the UOT, I doubt it will happen anytime soon.

Just look at the back of the 1995 VHS release. It mentions something about that being the final home video release of the original versions of Star Wars. George has viewed the UOT as imperfect and incongruent with his vision of SW for quite a long time (as most directors view their works incomplete or having flaws). I don't think much will change.

Never say never, but I'd caution people from becoming too optimistic about seeing a proper UOT release.

I was in at the Gary Kurtz talk at Elstree Studios last month and after sharing some likes/dislikes of the SE, he also said that George should release the OOT on blu ray.

Kind of funny that George pretty much had tried to not give Gary any credit or Marcia either and they have pretty much been erased from "official GL Star Wars history"  except for the mentions in the Rinzler books.

Or Gary appearing in that fluff documentary that was on the 2004 bonus disc.

Is he even in the archival commentary tracks on the blu ray?  I don't own it so i cannot comment.

I don't know if George would like to be called bitch a lot.

Since they're like poetry, what with the rhyming and all, I find that I only need to watch three out of the six films.

1990ocu, I would accept nothing less than what you listed. I won't even touch the prequels unless the theatrical cuts are included. Yes, that means all three versions of AOTC.

McCallum is smart enough to know there's $$$$ to be made with the UOT. That's all he cares about, after all.

"If he released them, that way everyone could have it." Never thought about it like that before... that's brilliant. ;) Seriously though, it doesn't get more clear than this, McCallum says exactly how it is compared to the excuses we hear from Lucas from time to time. He says that officially it's never going to happen, if only Lucas could be as sincere.
